Starting the engine

This model is equipped with an electronically controlled fuel injection system. This is a sys-tem that automatically controls fuel injection. There is usually no need to depress the accel- erator pedal when starting the engine.The starter should not be run for more than 15 seconds at a time. To prevent battery drai
n, wait a few seconds
between attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened.
2. Insert the ignition key. 3. Press and hold the brake pedal down withyour right foot. 4. Make sure the selector
lever is in the “P”
(PARK) position.5. Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” posi- tion and make certain that all warning lights are functioning properly beforestarting the engine. 6. Turn the ignition switch to the “START” position without pre
ssing the accelerator
pedal. Release the
ignition switch when
the engine starts.
After several attempts
, you may experience
that the engine still does not start. 1. Make sure that all electric devices, such as lights, air conditi
oning blower and rear
window defogger, are turned off.
2. While depressing the brake pedal, press the accelerator peda
l halfway and hold it
there, then crank the engine. Release the accelerator pedal, immediately after the engine starts.3. If the engine still wi
ll not start, the engine
could be flooded with too much gasoline. While depressing the brake pedal, pushthe accelerator pedal all the way down and hold it there, then crank the engine for 5 to 6 seconds. Return the ignition switch to the “OFF” or “LOCK” position and release the accelerator pedal. Wait a fewseconds, and then crank the engine again for 5 to 6 seconds while depressing the brake pedal, but do
not push the accelera-
tor pedal. Release the ignition key if the engine starts. If the e
ngine fails to start,
repeat these procedures
. If the engine still
will not start, contact your local Mitsubi- shi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice for assistance.

left in gear and held

The CVT will automatically and continuouslychange its gear ratio depending on road anddriving conditions. This helps achieve smooth driving and excellent fuel efficiency. If your vehicle is equipped with the spor- tronic steering wheel paddle shifter, you can manually shift up and shift down the trans-mission. Refer to “Sports mode” on page 5-76. The transmission prevents unnecessary upshifts even when the accelerator pedal is released and ensures smooth driving. According to the conditions, the transmission will automatically shift to a lower gear ratioto achieve stronger engine braking. This may help reduce your need
to use the service
brake.

CAUTION To avoid transaxle overheating, never try to keep your vehicle stationary on a hill by using the accelerator
pedal. Always apply

When turning a sharp corner in “4WD LOCK” (Electronically
controlled 4WD) or
“LOCK” (S-AWC) position at low speed, a slight difference in
steering may be experi-
enced similar to feeling as if the brakes wereapplied. This is calle
d tight corner braking
and results from each of the four tires being at a different distance from the corner. The phe-nomenon is typical of 4-
wheel drive vehicles.
If this occurs, either straighten out the steer- ing wheel or change to another mode. Set the drive mode-selector to “4WD AUTO”, “4WD LOCK” (Electronically con-trolled 4WD) or “SNOW” (S-AWC) in accor- dance with the road conditions, and then gradually depress the accelerator pedal for asmooth start.

Driving on sandy or muddy roads
CAUTION Do not force the vehicle or drive recklessly on sandy surfaces. In comparison with nor- mal road surfaces, th

drive-system components are put underexcessive strain when driving on such a sur- face. This could lead to accidents.

The anti-lock braking system helps prevent the wheels from locking up when braking.This helps maintain vehicle drivability and steering wheel handling.  When using the anti-lock brakes (sudden braking), steering is slightly different from normal driving conditions. Use the steering wheel carefully. Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Even if your vehi- cle is equipped with
the anti-lock braking
system, leave a greater braking distance when: • Driving on gravel or snow-coveredroads. • Driving on uneven road surfaces.
 Operation of anti-lock braking system is not restricted situations where brakes areapplied suddenly. This system may also prevent the wheels from locking when you drive over manholes, steel roadworkplates, road markings
, or any uneven road
surface.  When the anti-lock braking system is in use, you may feel the brake pedal vibrat- ing and hear a unique sound. It may also feel as if the pedal
resists being pressed.
In this situation, si
mply hold the brake
pedal down firmly. Do not pump thebrake, which will result in reduced braking performance.
CAUTION The brake assist system is not a device designed to exercise
braking force greater
than its capacity. Make sure to always keep asufficient distance be
tween vehicl
es in front
of you without relying too much on the brake assist system.NOTE
 Once the brake assist system is operational, it maintains great braking force even if the brake pedal is lightly released. To stop its operation, completely removeyour foot from the brake pedal.  The brake assist system may become opera- tional when the brake pedal is fully depressed even if it
has not been depressed
suddenly.  When the brake assist system is in use while driving, you may feel as if the depressedbrake pedal is soft, the pedal moves in small motions in conjunction with the operation noise, or the vehicle body and the steeringwheel vibrate. This occurs when the brake assist system is ope
rating normally and does
not indicate faulty
operation. Continue to
depress the brake pedal.  You may hear an operation noise when the brake pedal is suddenl
y or fully depressed
while stationary. This does not indicate a malfunction and the brake assist system is operating normally.
 When the anti-lock brake system warning light or only active st

an audible warning
when your vehicle begins to leave that travel lane. When operating, the “LDW” indicator on the multi-information display will be changed to indicator (green). The LDW will not operate, however, and the “LDW” indicator will be appear
ed if any of following
conditions have occurred:  The vehicle speed is less than 38 mph (60 km/h). The turn signal lever is being operated or has been operated in
the past 7 seconds.
