All seats are equipped with a seat belt which uses one combined lap-and-shoulder belt with an emergency locking retractor. This system is designed to provide both com- fort and safety. It perm
its full extension and
automatic retraction of the belts during nor- mal vehicle operation.
A sensing device
inside the belt retractor is designed to lock the retractor in the event of a sudden change inthe vehicle’s motion.
1. Occupants should always
sit back in their
seats with their backs against the uprightseatback. To reduce
the risk of serious
injury or death during deployment of the airbag, adjust the driver’s seat as far backas possible while maintaining a position that still enables you to fully apply the pedals, easily control the steering wheel,and safely operate the vehicle. The front passenger seat should also be moved as far back as possible. Refer to “Supple- mental Restraint System (SRS) - airbag” on page 4-34. Also refer to “To adjust theseat forward or backward” on page 4-5.
2. Before using the center seat belt for sec- ond row, make sure that the detachable anchor is securely
latched and the seat
belt is not twisted. For details, refer topage 4-21.

When turning a sharp corner in “4WD LOCK” (Electronically
controlled 4WD) or
“LOCK” (S-AWC) position at low speed, a
slight difference in
steering may be experi-
enced similar to feeling as if the brakes wereapplied. This is called tight corner braking and results from each of the four tires being at a different distance from the corner. The phe-nomenon is typical of 4-wheel drive vehicles. If this occurs, either straighten out the steer- ing wheel or change to another mode. Set the drive mode-selector to “4WD AUTO”, “4WD LOCK” (Electronically con- trolled 4WD) or “SNOW” (S-AWC) in accor- dance with the road conditions, and thengradually depress the ac
celerator pedal for a
smooth start.

The treadwear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of
the tire when tested
under controlled conditions on a specified government test course
. For example, a tire
graded 150 would wear one and one-half (11/2) times as well on the government course
as a tire graded 100.
The relative performance
of tires depends upon the actual conditions of their use, however, and may depart signifi-cantly from the norm due to variations in driving habits, service
practices and differ-
ences in road characteristics and climate. The traction grades, from highest to lowest, are AA, A, B and C. Those grades represent the tire’s ability to stop on wet pavement as measured under contro
lled conditions on
specified government te
st surfaces of asphalt
and concrete. A tire
marked C may have poor
traction performance.
The temperature grades are A (the highest), B and C, representing the ti
re’s resistance to the
generation of heat and it
s ability to dissipate
heat when tested un
der controlled conditions
on a specified indoor
laboratory test wheel.
Sustained high temperature can cause the material of the tire to
degenerate and reduce
tire life, and excessive temperature can leadto sudden tire failure. The grade C corre- sponds to a level of performance which all passenger car tires must
meet under the Fed-
eral Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 109. Grades B and A represent higher levels ofperformance on the laboratory test wheel than the minimum required by law.

vehicle. The wrong tire pressure will causeproblems in three major areas:  Safety Too little pressure increases flexing in the tire and can cause tire failure. Too muchpressure can cause a tire to lose its ability to cushion shock. Objects on the road and potholes could then ca
use tire damage that
may result in tire failure.
 Economy The wrong tire pressure can cause unevenwear patterns in the tire tread. These abnormal wear patterns will reduce the tread life, and the tire will have to bereplaced sooner. Too little pressure also makes it harder for the tire to roll, and this uses up more fuel. Ride comfort and vehicle stability The superior riding ex
perience built into
your vehicle partly depends on the correct tire pressure. Too mu
ch pressure gives an
uncomfortable and ja
rring ride. Too little
pressure feels as if your vehicle is slow to respond. Unequal tire pressures can make steeringyour vehicle uneven
and unpredictable.
The tire pressure for your vehicle under nor- mal driving conditions is
listed on the placard
attached to the driver’s door sill.(Refer to “Tire and loading information plac- ard” on page 11-3.) The recommended inflation pressures undernormal driving conditions should be used for the tires listed below.
