Your vehicle has been
designed primarily for
use on pavement. But its unique 4 -wheel
drive system allows
you to occasionally travel on unpaved roads, to campgrounds, picnic
sites, and similar
locations. Not only does this ensure better handling on dry, paved roads but al
so permits better trac-
tion when driving on slippery, wet or snow- covered roads and when moving out of mud.But it is not suitable for heavy off road use or towing in rough conditions. It is particularly im
portant to note that 4-
wheel drive may not gi
ve sufficient hill
climbing ability and e
ngine braking on steep
slopes. You should try to avoid driving onsteep slopes. Also, you must exercise caution when driving on sand and mud and when driving through water because sufficie
nt traction may not be
available in certain circumstances. Please avoid driving the vehicle through areas where the tires may get stuck in deep sand or mud.
When the ECO mode switch is ON
NOTE
 If the drive mode is switched in any mode after the drive mode is switched in “AWCECO”, the drive mode will not be changed even if the ECO mode switch is switched OFF.
4-wheel drive operation
WA R N I N G Do not over-rely on th
e 4-wheel drive vehi-
cles. Even 4-wheel drive vehicles have lim- its to the system and ability to maintaincontrol and traction. Reckless driving may lead to accidents. Al
ways drive carefully,
taking account of the road conditions. Improperly operating
this vehicle on or
off-pavement can cause an accident orrollover in which you
and your passengers
could be seriously injured or killed.• Follow all instructions and guidelines inthe owner’s manual.• Keep your speed low and do not drivefaster than conditions.
NOTE
 Driving on rough roads can be hard on a vehicle. Before you le
ave the pavement, be
sure all scheduled ma
intenance and service
has been done, and that you have inspected your vehicle. Pay spec
ial attention to the
condition of the ti
res, and check the tire pres-
sures.  Mitsubishi Motors is not responsible to the operator for any damage or injury caused or liability incurred by improper and negligent operation of a vehicl
e. All techniques of
vehicle operation depend on the skill and experience of the opera
tor and other partici-
pating parties. Any de
viation from the rec-
ommended operating instru
ctions above is at
their own risk.  Note that the stopping distance required of the 4-wheel drive vehicle differs very little from that of the front-wheel drive vehicle. When driving on a snow-covered road or a slippery, muddy surface, make sure that you keep a sufficient dist
ance between your vehi-
cle and the one ahead of you.  The driving posture s
hould be more upright;
adjust the seat to a good position for easy steering and pedal operati
on. Be sure to wear
the seat belt.  After driving on rough roads, check each part of the vehicle
and wash it thoroughly
with water. Refer to the “Inspection and maintenance followi
ng rough road opera-
tion” section and “Vehicle care and Mainte-nance” sections.

When turning a sharp corner in “4WD LOCK” (Electronically
controlled 4WD) or
“LOCK” (S-AWC) position at low speed, a slight difference in
steering may be experi-
enced similar to feeling as if the brakes wereapplied. This is calle
d tight corner braking
and results from each of the four tires being at a different distance from the corner. The phe-nomenon is typical of 4-
wheel drive vehicles.
If this occurs, either straighten out the steer- ing wheel or change to another mode. Set the drive mode-selector to “4WD AUTO”, “4WD LOCK” (Electronically con-trolled 4WD) or “SNOW” (S-AWC) in accor- dance with the road conditions, and then gradually depress the accelerator pedal for asmooth start.
Set the drive mode-selector to “4WD LOCK” (Electronically contro
lled 4WD) or “LOCK”
(S-AWC) and then gradually depress the accelerator pedal for a
smooth start. Keep the
pressure on the accelera
tor pedal as constant
as possible, and drive at low speed.
CAUTION Setting the drive mode-selector to “4WD LOCK” (Electronically
controlled 4WD) or
“LOCK” (S-AWC) position to drive on drypaved road will increa
se fuel consumption,
with possible noise generation.
Turning sharp corners On snowy or icy roads
NOTE
 The use of snow tires is recommended.  Maintain a safe distan
ce between vehicles,
avoid sudden braking, and use engine brak- ing (downshifting).CAUTION Avoid sudden braking,
sudden acceleration
and sharp turning. Skidding occurs and con-trol of the vehicl
e could be lost.
Driving on sandy or muddy roads
CAUTION Do not force the vehicle or drive recklessly on sandy surfaces. In comparison with nor- mal road surfaces, th
e engine and other
drive-system components are put underexcessive strain when driving on such a sur- face. This could lead to accidents.
 If any of the following conditions occur while the vehicle is
being driven, immedi-
ately park your vehicle
in a safe place and
follow these procedures:• If the engine coolan
t temperature display
flashes on the information screen in the multi-information di
splay or the engine
power drops suddenly. Refer to “Engine overheating” on page 8-4.• If the “ ” warning display and “SLOW DOWN” or the “ ” warning display and “SERVICE REQUIRED” appear on the information screen in the multi-informationdisplay. Refer to “Warning disp
lay” on page 5-66,
5-74.WA R N I N G When attempting to rock your vehicle out of a stuck position, be sure that the areaaround the vehicle is
clear of people and
physical objects. The rocking motion may cause the vehicle to suddenly launch for- ward/backward, caus
ing injury or dam-
age to nearby people or objects.CAUTION

Your vehicle may not provide sufficient hill climbing ability and engine braking on steep slope. Avoid driving on steep slopes even though the vehicle is an 4-wheel drive vehi-cle.
N00537800085
If the electrical circuits become wet, furtheroperation of the vehi
cle will be impossible;
therefore, avoid drivi
ng through water unless
absolutely necessary. If driving through wateris unavoidable, use the following procedure:
Check the depth of the water and the terrain before attempting to drive through it. Driveslowly to avoid creating excessive water splashing.
N00530700085
After operating the vehicle in rough road con- ditions, be sure to perform the followinginspection and maintenance procedures:
 Check that the vehicle has not been dam- aged by rocks, gravel, etc. Carefully wash the
vehicle with water.
Drive the vehicle sl
owly while lightly
depressing the brake pedal in order to dryout the brakes. If the brakes still do not function properly, contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil-ity of your choice as soon as possible to have the brakes checked.  Remove the insects, dr
ied grass, etc. clog-
ging the radiator core.  After driving through water, check the engine, transaxle and
differential oil. If
the oil or grease is milky or cloudy because of water cont
amination, it must
be replaced with new oil.  Check the inside of the vehicle. If water entry is found, dry the carpet etc. Inspect the headlights. If water is in the headlight housing, have it drained at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility of your choice.
NOTE
 Avoid sudden braking,
sudden acceleration
and sharp turning; such operations couldresult in the vehicle becoming stuck.  If the vehicle become
s stuck in sandy or
muddy roads, it can often be moved with arocking motion. Move the selector lever alternately between the “D” (DRIVE) and “R” (REVERSE) positi
ons while pressing
lightly on the ac
celerator pedal.
 Driving on rough road can cause rust on the vehicle; wash the vehi
cle thoroughly as soon
as possible after such use.
Climbing/descending sharp grades Driving through water
CAUTION Never drive through water that is deep enough to cover wheel hubs, axles or exhaust pipe. Do not change th
e selector lever posi-
tion while driving through water. Frequent driving through water can adversely affect the life
span of the vehicle;
consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facili
ty of your choice and
take the necessary measures to prepare, inspect, and repair the vehicle. After driving through water, apply the brakes to be sure they are
functioning properly. If
the brakes are wet a
nd not functioning prop-
erly, dry them out by driving slowly whilelightly depressing the brake pedal. Inspect each part of the vehicle carefully.

Cautions on the handling of 4-wheel drive vehicles 5-88 Features and controls
5
N00530801214
Since the driving torque can be applied to the four wheels, the driving performance of the vehicle when operating in 4-wheel drive is greatly affected by the condition of the tires. Pay close attention to the tires. Install only the specified tires on all wheels. Refer to “Tires and wheels” onpage 11-7.  Be sure all four tires and wheels are the same size and type. When it is necessary to replace any of the tires or wheels, replace all four.  All tires should be ro
tated before the wear
difference between the front and rear tires is recognizable.
Good vehicle performance cannot be expected if there is a difference in wearbetween tires. Refer to “Tire rotation” on page 9-20.  Check the tire inflation pressure regularly.Cautions on the handling of 4-wheel drive vehicles Tires and wheels
CAUTION Always use tires of th
e same size, type, and
brand that have no wear differences. Usingtires of different size, type, brands or degreeof wear, will increase the differential oil tem- perature and result in
possible damage to the
driving system. Further, the drive train willbe subject to excessi
ve loading, possibly
leading to oil leakage,
component seizure, or
other serious failures.
To w i n g
CAUTION Do not tow 4-wheel drive vehicles with the front or rear wheels on the ground (Type Aor Type B) as illustrate
d. This could result in
damage to the drivetrain, or unstable towing. If you tow 4-wheel drive vehicles, use Type C or Type D equipment. Even in “4WD ECO” (Electronically con- trolled 4WD) or “AWC ECO” (S-AWC)drive mode, the vehicle cannot be towed with the front or the rear wheels on the ground.
Jacking up a 4-wheel drive vehicle
WA R N I N G Do not crank the engine while jacking up the vehicle. The tire on the ground may turn and the vehicle may roll off the jack.

Overuse of the brake can cause weakening, resulting in poor brake response and prema- ture wear of the brake pads. When driving down a long or steep hill, use engine braking by downshifting.
N00517600364
Your vehicle is equipped with power brakesfor more braking force with less brake pedal effort.Your brakes are designed to operate at full capacity, even if the power assist is not being used.If the power assist is not being used, the effort needed to press the br
ake pedal is greater.
If you should lose the power assist for some reason, the brakes will still work. If the power brake unit or either of the twobrake hydraulic systems stops working prop- erly, the rest of the brake system will still work, but the vehicle
will not slow down as
quickly. You will know this has happened if you find you need to press the brake down farther, orharder when slowing down or stopping, or if the brake warning light and the warning dis- play in the multi-information display comeon.
N00550700124
The disc brakes have an alarm that makes a metallic squeal when
the brake pads have
worn down enough to need service. If you hear this sound, have the brake pads replaced at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair fa
cility of your choice.
N00562601097
The hill start assist make
s it easy to start off
on a steep uphill slope by preventing the vehicle from moving back
wards. It keeps the
braking force for about 2 second when you move your foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal.
Service brake Brake pedal
WA R N I N G Do not leave any objects near the brake pedal or let a floor mat slide under it; doing so could prevent the full pedalstroke that would be necessary in an emergency. Make sure that the pedal can be operated freely at all times. Make surethe floor mat is securely held in place.CAUTION It is important not to drive the vehicle with your foot resting on the brake pedal when braking is not required. This practice can result in very high brake temperatures, pre-mature lining wear, a
nd possible damage to
the brakes.
Power brakes
WA R N I N G Never coast downhill
with the engine OFF.
Keep the engine running whenever your vehicle is in motion. If you turn off the engine while driving, the power brakebooster will stop wo
rking and your brakes
will not work as well.
 If the power assist is lost or if either brake hydraulic system stop
s working properly,
take your vehicle to
an authorized Mit-
subishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice immediately.
Brake pad wear alarm
WA R N I N G Driving with worn brake pads will make it harder to stop, and can cause an accident.

The brake assist system
is a device assisting
drivers who cannot depress the brake pedal firmly such as in em
ergency stop situations
and provides greater braking force. If the brake pedal is depressed suddenly, the brakes will be applied
with more force than
usual.
CAUTION Do not overly rely on th
e hill start assist to
prevent backwards movement of the vehicle.Under certain circumstances, even when hillstart assist is activated, the vehicle may move backwards if the brake pedal is not suf- ficiently depressed, if
the vehicle is heavily
loaded, or if the road is very steep or slip- pery. The hill start assist
is not designed to keep
the vehicle stopped in
place on uphill slopes
for more than 2 seconds. When facing uphill, do not rely on using the hill start assist to ma
intain a stopped position
as an alternative to depressing the brake pedal. Doing so could cause an accident. Do not turn the igniti
on switch to the “OFF”,
“LOCK” or “ACC” pos
ition while the hill
start assist is operating. The hill start assist could stop operating, wh
ich could result in
an accident.
To operate

NOTE
 The hill start assist is activated when all of the following conditions are met. • The engine is running. (The hill start assist
will not be activated
while the engine is st
arting or immediately
after the engine is started.) • The selector lever is
in any position other
than “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL). • The vehicle is comple
tely stationary, with
the brake pedal depressed. • The parking brake is released.  The hill start assist will not operate if the accelerator pedal is
depressed before the
brake pedal is released.  The hill start assist also operates when reversing on an uphill slope.

Anti-lock braking system
Features and controls 5-91
5
N00517900240
The anti-lock braking system helps prevent the wheels from locking up when braking. This helps maintain vehicle drivability and steering wheel handling.  When using the anti-lock brakes (sudden braking), steering is slightly different from normal driving conditions. Use the steering wheel carefully. Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Even if your vehi- cle is equipped with
the anti-lock braking
system, leave a greater braking distance when: • Driving on gravel or snow-coveredroads. • Driving on uneven road surfaces.
 Operation of anti-lock braking system is not restricted situations where brakes areapplied suddenly. This system may also prevent the wheels from locking when you drive over manholes, steel roadworkplates, road markings
, or any uneven road
surface.  When the anti-lock braking system is in use, you may feel the brake pedal vibrat- ing and hear a unique sound. It may also feel as if the pedal
resists being pressed.
In this situation, si
mply hold the brake
pedal down firmly. Do not pump thebrake, which will result in reduced braking performance.
CAUTION The brake assist system is not a device designed to exercise
braking force greater
than its capacity. Make sure to always keep asufficient distance be
tween vehicl
es in front
of you without relying too much on the brake assist system.NOTE
 Once the brake assist system is operational, it maintains great braking force even if the brake pedal is lightly released. To stop its operation, completely removeyour foot from the brake pedal.  The brake assist system may become opera- tional when the brake pedal is fully depressed even if it
has not been depressed
suddenly.  When the brake assist system is in use while driving, you may feel as if the depressedbrake pedal is soft, the pedal moves in small motions in conjunction with the operation noise, or the vehicle body and the steeringwheel vibrate. This occurs when the brake assist system is ope
rating normally and does
not indicate faulty
operation. Continue to
depress the brake pedal.  You may hear an operation noise when the brake pedal is suddenl
y or fully depressed
while stationary. This does not indicate a malfunction and the brake assist system is operating normally.
 When the anti-lock brake system warning light or only active st
ability control warning
light illuminate, the brake assist system innot functioning.
Anti-lock braking system Driving hints
NOTE
CAUTION The anti-lock braking system cannot prevent accidents. It is your
responsibility to take
safety precautions a
nd to drive carefully.
To prevent failure of the anti-lock braking system, be sure all 4 wheels and tires are the same size and the same type.NOTE
 A whining sound is emitted from the engine compartment when driving immediately after starting the engine. These are the nor-mal sounds the anti-lock braking system makes when performing a self-check. It does not indicate
a malfunction.

possible. It may become harder to turn thesteering wheel.
Active stability control (ASC)
CAUTION Do not over-rely on the ASC. Even the ASC cannot prevent the natural laws of physics from acting on the vehicle. This system, like any other system, has
limits and cannot help
you to maintain traction and control of the vehicle in all circumstances. Reckless driv- ing can lead to accident
s. It is the driver’s
responsibillty to drive carefully, This means taking into account the traffic, road and envi- ronmental conditions. Be sure to use the same specified type and size of tire on all four
wheels. Otherwise, the
ASC may not work properly. Do not install any aftermarket limited slip differential (LSD) on your vehicle. The ASC may stop functioning properly.NOTE
 An operation noise may be emitted from the engine compartment in the following situa-tions. The sound is associated with checkingthe operations of the ASC. At this time, you may feel a shock from the brake pedal if you depress it. These do not
indicate a malfunc-
tion. • When the ignition switch is set to the “ON” position. • When the vehicle is driven for a while after the engine is turned on.
 When the ASC is acti
vated, you may feel a
vibration in the vehicl
