:ARN,NGzDo not over-rely on the 4-wheel drive ve-
hicles. Even 4-wheel drive vehicles have limits to the system and ability to main-tain control and traction. Reckless driving may lead to accidents. Always drive care-
fully, taking account of the road condi-
tions.
z Improperly operating this vehicle on or
off-paved roads can cause an accident or rollover in which you and your passengers
could be seriously injured or killed.

Climbing/descending sharpgrades
Your vehicle may not provide sufficient hill
climbing ability and regenerative brake on
steep slope. Avoid driving on steep slopes even though the vehicle is a 4-wheel drive vehicle.
Inspection and maintenance
following rough road
operation
After operating the vehicle in rough road
conditions, be sure to perform the following inspection and maintenance procedures:
z Check that the vehicle has not been dam-
aged by rocks, gravel, etc.
z Carefully wash the vehicle with water.
Drive the vehicle slowly while lightly
depressing the brake pedal in order to dry out the brakes. If the brakes still do
not function properly, we recommend you to have the brakes checked as soon
as possible.
z Remove the insects, dried grass, etc.
clogging the radiator core.
z Check the inside of the vehicle. If water
entry is found, dry the carpet etc.
z Inspect the headlamps. If the headlamp
bulb is flooded with water, we recom-
mend you to have it drained.
Cautions on handling of 4-
wheel drive vehicles
Tyres and wheels
Since the driving torque can be applied to the 4 wheels, the driving performance of the ve-
hicle when operating in 4-wheel drive is
greatly affected by the condition of the tyres.

Pay close attention to the tyres.
z Install only the specified tyres on all
wheels. Refer to “Tyres and wheels” on page 12-08.
z Be sure all 4 tyres and wheels are the
same size and type.
When it is necessary to replace any of
the tyres or wheels, replace all 4 tyres.
z All tyres should be rotated before the
wear difference between the front and
rear tyres is recognizable.
Good vehicle performance cannot be expec- ted if there is a difference in wear between
tyres. Refer to “Tyre rotation” on page 11-11.
z Check the tyre inflation pressure regular-
ly.
CAUT,ONz Always use tyres of the same size, same
type, and same brand, and which have no wear differences. Using tyres of different
size, type, brands or degree of wear, will in-
crease the differential oil temperature, result- ing in possible damage to the driving sys-
tem. Further, the drive train will be subjected
to excessive loading possibly leading to oil leakage, component seizure, or other seriousfaults.

CAUT,ONzDo not tow 4-wheel drive vehicles with the
front or rear wheels on the ground (Type A
or Type B) as illustrated. This could result in damage to the drivetrain, or unstable towing.
If you tow 4-wheel drive vehicles, use Type C or Type D equipment.
Jacking up a 4-wheel drive ve-
hicle
:ARN,NGz Do not turn on the Plug-in Hybrid EV
System or turn a jacked-up wheel whenthe vehicle is jacked up. The tyre in con-
tact with the ground may turn and the ve- hicle may come off the jack, possibly lead-
ing to an accident. Besides, do not touch
the high-voltage area.EV switch
To drive the vehicle without starting the en-
gine as much as possible, the EV priority
mode can be used.
This mode helps to drive the vehicle at a place needed for concern of noises and ex-
haust gas emissions, such as residential areas etc.
To switch to the EV priority mode, press the EV switch with operation mode of the powerswitch in ON.
If the EV switch is pressed, you can drive the
vehicle by using only the EV drive mode as much as possible, even if the accelerator ped-al is roughly depressed.
To cancel the EV priority mode, press the EV
switch again.
When the operation mode of the power
switch is put in OFF, the EV priority mode
will be cancelled. When switching to the EV priority mode, on
the information screen in the multi informa- tion display, a screen showing the EV priority
mode is displayed. The EV priority mode in-
dication on the upper left of the screen also indicates the engine operating state. When the engine is not running, it is displayed in
blue, and when the engine is running, it is
displayed in gray.

Battery save mode
To save the remaining power in the drive bat-tery while driving, the battery save mode can be used. This mode helps preserve the electri-cal power in the drive battery for later use,
such as in a residential area, or to use at your
destination. The battery save mode can also be used to reduce electric power consumptionfrom the drive battery during high-speed
driving.
When the battery save mode is activated, the
engine will start in order to preserve the re-
maining power of the drive battery and the vehicle will operate in the series hybrid mode or the parallel hybrid mode depending on theremaining power in the drive battery.
To cancel the battery save mode, press the SAVE/CHARGE mode switch twice.
When the operation mode of the power
switch is put in OFF, the battery save mode will be cancelled.

If the battery save mode is activated, the fol-
lowing image is displayed on the information screen in the multi-information display.NOTEz The engine may stop when the vehicle stops
or is running.
z Even if the battery save mode is selected, the
engine may not start depending on the con- dition of the remaining drive battery capaci- ty or the Plug-in Hybrid EV system control.
z In the following conditions, the battery save
mode cannot be used even if the battery save mode is selected, a buzzer will sound andNOTEthe message will appear in the multi-infor-
mation display.

stopped the Plug-in Hybrid EV System.
Refer to “Parking” on page 7-06
z Only use the battery charge mode in a
well ventilated space.
The engine will start when the vehicle is in
the battery charge mode, and this can
cause carbon monoxide to build up caus- ing carbon monoxide poisoning. Be sure
to use at the well-ventilated place.
z Do not use the battery charge mode near
flammable objects such as dried grass or
paper etc. There is a possibility of starting
a fire due to the high exhaust pipe temper-
ature.CAUT,ONz While the battery charge mode is activated,
do not cover the front of the vehicle withanything including a car cover. Doing so
could cause the engine to overheat.NOTEz Even if the battery charge mode is selected,
the engine may not start depending on the condition of the remaining drive battery ca-
pacity or the Plug-in Hybrid EV system con- trol.
z In the following conditions, the battery
charge mode cannot be used even if the bat- tery charge mode is selected, a buzzer willNOTEsound and the message will appear in the
multi-information display.

NOTEzWhen using the battery charge mode with a
vehicle that has stopped in the heath a long
time, it may not charge.
z The charging time close to full charge of the
drive battery becomes longer depending on the condition of the drive battery, a driving
condition or a environment.
z The engine may stop near full charge.
z If you use the battery charge mode, in order
to generate electricity using gasoline, the fuel consumption will suffer.
We recommend you to consider the environ- ment.
z When the engine is started while parking,
there is a risk of receiving a penalty due to idling stop ordinances.
You should use the battery charge mode that conforms to the relevant municipality.
Also, if the engine is started, ensure there is
sufficient fuel in the fuel tank so that the en-
gine does not run out of fuel.
z When the EV switch or the SPORT mode
switch is pressed while driving in the battery
charge mode, the mode changes to the selec-
ted mode.
Refer to “EV switch” on page 7-25 or
“SPORT mode switch” on page 7-30.
If the SAVE/CHARGE mode switch is pressed twice, the mode is returned to thebattery charge mode.SPORT mode switch
The SPORT mode switch is used when doing powerful sporty driving on mountain roads
and uphill slopes.
Quick acceleration in response to the opera- tion of the accelerator pedal and quick decel-
eration by strong regenerative braking force are possible.
The SPORT mode can be used when the SPORT mode switch is pressed while the
READY indicator light is on.
To cancel, press the switch again or turn off the power mode.
If the SPORT mode is activated, the follow-
ing display appears on the information screen
in the multi-information display.
:ARN,NGz If a large regenerative braking force is ap-
plied, the stop lamps will be automatically illuminated.NOTEz Selecting the SPORT mode makes the en-
gine easier to start. Also, since the response
to the operation of the accelerator pedal be- comes better, there may be a shock whenstepping on the accelerator pedal.
z When SPORT mode is selected, the regener-
ative braking force automatically switches to B5. After switching, you can change to your favorite regenerative braking force with the
Regenerative braking level selector. W “Re- generative braking level selector (paddle
type)” P. 7-18
z When you select the SPORT mode in situa-
tions such as the following, a large regenera- tive braking force may not work.

NOTEzIf you select the cruise control or the Adap-
tive Cruise Control System (ACC), the re- generative braking level will be D while driving in the SPORT mode.
The regenerative brake force becomes B5
when the SPORT mode is returned by can- celling the cruise control or the Adaptive
Cruise Control System (ACC).
z When the remaining amount of fuel is small,
the SPORT mode cannot be used even if the
SPORT mode switch is pressed.
If you want to use the SPORT mode, refuel the vehicle.
z While the following message is displayed in
the multi-information display, the SPORT mode cannot be used even if the SPORT mode switch is pressed and a buzzer will
sound.

AVAS OFF indicator comes on and goes out
after a few seconds.:ARN,NGz Even if the Acoustic Vehicle Alerting Sys-
tem (AVAS) sounds, pay special attention
to pedestrians.
Pedestrians may not notice the oncoming vehicle, which may cause an accident re-
sulting in serious personal injury or death.CAUT,ONz Always confirm the indication lamp goes off
before driving.
If the indication lamp blinks, the operation
mode is put in OFF, and the operation mode is put in ON once again. It is normal if the
indication lamp goes off. If the indication
lamp blinks again, have the vehicle inspec-
ted at a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized
Service Point as soon as possible.AVAS OFF switch
If the operation mode is put in ON, the AVAS
is automatically turned on.
The AVAS should be turned on while normal
driving.
When driving on the freeway etc., it is possi- ble to turn off the AVAS by pressing the
AVAS OFF switch.
When pressing the AVAS OFF switch, the au-
dible alarm does not sound and the AVAS OFF indicator illuminates.
