CYLINDER HEAD

e. Turn all cylinder head bolts 90 degrees clockwise. (Angle tight-
ening)
CAUTION:
Check the tightening angle by using angle wrench (SST).
Avoid judgment by visual inspection without tool.
Check tightening angle indicated on angle wrench (SST) indi-
cator plate.
f. Turn all cylinder head bolts 90 degrees clockwise again. (Angle
tightening)
4. After installing cylinder head, measure distance between front
end faces of cylinder block and cylinder head (left and right
banks).
If the measured value is out of the standard, re-install cylinder
head.
5. Install in the reverse order of removal after this step.

9. Tighten main bearing cap bolts in numerical order as shown in
the figure as follows:
a. Apply new engine oil to threads and seat surfaces of main bear-
ing cap bolts.
b. Tighten main bearing cap bolts in several different steps.
c. Turn all main bearing cap bolts 90 degrees clockwise. (Angle
tightening)
CAUTION:
Use angle wrench [SST: KV10112100] to check tightening
angle. Do not make judgment by visual inspection.
After installing main bearing cap bolts, make sure that crank-
shaft can be rotated smoothly by hand.
Check crankshaft end play. Refer to EM-245, "CRANKSHAFT
END PLAY" .
10. Inspect outer diameter of connecting rod bolts. Refer to EM-253, "
CONNECTING ROD BOLT OUTER
DIAMETER" .
11. Install piston to connecting rod as follows:
a. Using snap ring pliers, install new snap ring to the groove of piston rear side.
Insert it fully into groove to install.
b. Install piston to connecting rod.
Using industrial use drier or similar tool, heat piston until piston pin can be pushed in by hand without
excess force [approx. 60 to 70°C (140 to 158°F)]. From the front to the rear, insert piston pin into piston
and connecting rod.
Assemble so that the front mark on the piston head and the
cylinder number on connecting rod are positioned as shown in
the figure.
c. Install new snap ring to the groove of the piston front side.
Insert it fully into groove to install.
After installing, make sure that connecting rod moves
smoothly.
12. Using piston ring expander (commercial service tool), install pis-
ton rings.
CAUTION:
When installing piston rings, be careful not to damage
piston.
Be careful not to damage piston rings by expending them
excessively. : 35.3 N·m (3.6 kg-m, 26 ft-lb)

Match the stamped cylinder number marks on connecting rod
with those on connecting rod bearing cap to install.
Be sure that front mark on connecting rod bearing cap is fac-
ing front of engine.
16. Tighten connecting rod nuts (VQ23DE) or connecting rod bolts (VQ35DE) as follows:
a. Apply engine oil to the threads and seats of connecting rod nuts or bolts.
b. Tighten connecting rod nuts or bolts.
c. Then tighten all connecting rod nuts or bolts 90 degrees clock-
wise. (Angle tightening)
CAUTION:
Use angle wrench [SST: KV10112100] to check tightening
angle. Do not make judgment by visual inspection.
After tightening connecting rod nuts or bolts, make sure that
crankshaft rotates smoothly.
17. Install rear oil seal retainer to cylinder block.
Apply new engine oil to both oil seal lip and dust seal lip.
Apply a continuous bead of liquid gasket with tube presser
[SST: WS39930000] to rear oil seal retainer as shown in the
figure.
Use Genuine Liquid Gasket or equivalent.
CAUTION:
Replace with a new part.
NOTE:
Regard both rear oil seal and retainer as an assembly.
18. Install pilot converter.
With drift [outer diameter: approx. 33 mm (1.30 in)], press-fit
as far as it will go.

6. Remove inspection hole cover.
Remove cover by pushing it, then by turning clip clockwise 90
degrees and by matching both cover hole and clip shape.
7. Disconnect harness connector and quick connector.
Disconnect quick connector as follows:
Hold the sides of quick connector, push in tabs and pull out
fuel feed tube.
If quick connector sticks to tube of fuel level sensor unit, push
and pull quick connector several times until it starts to move.
Then disconnect quick connector by pulling.

INSTALLATION
Note the following, and install in the reverse order of removal.
Fuel Level Sensor Unit, Fuel Filter and Fuel Pump Assembly
1. Install seal packing to fuel tank without any twist.
2. Align “B” with “A” as shown in the figure. Install fuel level sensor
unit, fuel filter and fuel pump assembly to fuel tank.
CAUTION:
Do not bend float arm during installing.
3. Tighten lock ring with lock ring wrench (commercial service tool).
CAUTION:
Install lock ring horizontally.
Quick Connector
Connect quick connector of fuel feed hose as follows:
1. Check the connection for damage or any foreign materials.
2. Align the connector with the tube, then insert the connector straight into the tube until a click sound is
heard.
3. After connecting, make sure that the connection is secure by following method.
Visually confirm that the two tabs are connected to the connector.
Pull the tube and the connector to make sure they are
securely connected.
Inspection Hole Cover
1. Install inspection hole cover with front mark (arrow) facing front of vehicle.
2. Lock clips by turning counter-clockwise.
INSPECTION AFTER INSTALLATION
Use the following procedure to check for fuel leaks.
1. Turn ignition switch “ON” (with engine stopped), then check connections for leaks by applying fuel pres-
sure to fuel piping.
2. Start engine and rev it up and make sure there are no fuel leaks at the fuel system connections.

SQUEAK AND RATTLE TROUBLE DIAGNOSESPFP:00000

CUSTOMER INTERVIEW
Interview the customer if possible, to determine the conditions that exist when the noise occurs. Use the Diag-
nostic Worksheet during the interview to document the facts and conditions when the noise occurs and any
customer's comments; refer to GW-9, "
Diagnostic Worksheet" . This information is necessary to duplicate the
conditions that exist when the noise occurs.
The customer may not be able to provide a detailed description or the location of the noise. Attempt to
obtain all the facts and conditions that exist when the noise occurs (or does not occur).
If there is more than one noise in the vehicle, be sure to diagnose and repair the noise that the customer
is concerned about. This can be accomplished by test driving the vehicle with the customer.
After identifying the type of noise, isolate the noise in terms of its characteristics. The noise characteristics
are provided so the customer, service adviser and technician are all speaking the same language when
defining the noise.
Squeak —(Like tennis shoes on a clean floor)
Squeak characteristics include the light contact/fast movement/brought on by road conditions/hard sur-
faces=higher pitch noise/softer surfaces=lower pitch noises/edge to surface=chirping
Creak—(Like walking on an old wooden floor)
Creak characteristics include firm contact/slow movement/twisting with a rotational movement/pitch
dependent on materials/often brought on by activity.
Rattle—(Like shaking a baby rattle)
Rattle characteristics include the fast repeated contact/vibration or similar movement/loose parts/missing
clip or fastener/incorrect clearance.
Knock —(Like a knock on a door)
Knock characteristics include hollow sounding/sometimes repeating/often brought on by driver action.
Tick—(Like a clock second hand)
Tick characteristics include gentle contacting of light materials/loose components/can be caused by driver
action or road conditions.
Thump—(Heavy, muffled knock noise)
Thump characteristics include softer knock/dead sound often brought on by activity.
Buzz—(Like a bumble bee)
Buzz characteristics include high frequency rattle/firm contact.
Often the degree of acceptable noise level will vary depending upon the person. A noise that you may
judge as acceptable may be very irritating to the customer.
Weather conditions, especially humidity and temperature, may have a great effect on noise level.
