PRECAUTIONS
6. Perform a self-diagnosis check of all control units using CONSULT-III.
Precaution for On Board Diagnosis (OBD) System of A/T and EngineINFOID:0000000005397211
The ECM has an on board diagnostic system. It will light up the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) to warn the
driver of a malfunction causing emission deterioration.
CAUTION:
• Be sure to turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect battery negative cable from battery negative
terminal before any repair or inspection work. The open/short circuit of related switches, sensors,
solenoid valves, etc. will cause the MIL to light up.
• Be sure to connect and lock the connectors secure ly after work. A loose (unlocked) connector will
cause the MIL to light up due to an open circuit. (Be sure the connectors are free from water, grease,
dirt, bent terminals, etc.)
• Be sure to route and secure th e harnesses properly after work. Interference of the harness with a
bracket, etc. may cause the MIL to light up due to a short circuit.
• Be sure to erase the unnecessary malfunction informa tion (repairs completed) from the TCM and
ECM before returning the vehicle to the customer.
PrecautionINFOID:0000000005397212
•Before connecting or disconn ecting the TCM harness connec-
tor, turn ignition switch OF F and disconnect the battery cable
from the negative terminal. Failure to do so may damage the
TCM. Because battery voltage is applied to TCM even if igni-
tion switch is turned off.
• When connecting or disconnect ing pin connectors into or
from TCM, take care not to damage pin terminals (bend or
break).
Make sure that there are not any bends or breaks on TCM pin
terminal, when connecting pin connectors.
• Before replacing TCM, perform TCM input/output signal
inspection and make sure whether TCM functions properly or
not. (See page AT-75, "
TCM Terminal and Reference Value".)
• After performing each TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS, perform “DTC
(Diagnostic Trouble Code) Confirmation Procedure”.
The DTC should not be displ ayed in the “DTC Confirmation
Procedure” if the repair is completed.
• Before proceeding with disassembly, thoroughly clean the outside of the transaxle. It is important to prevent the internal parts from
becoming contaminated by dirt or other foreign matter.
• Disassembly should be done in a clean work area.
• Use lint-free cloth or towels for wiping parts clean. Common shop rags can leave fibers that could in terfere with the operation of the A/T.
• Place disassembled parts in order for easier and proper assembly.
• All parts should be carefully cleaned with a general purpose, non-flammable solvent before inspection or reassembly.

The OD OFF indicator lamp is located on the combination meter.
1. If the ignition switch stays ON after repair work, be su re to turn ignition switch OFF once. Wait at least 10
seconds and then turn it ON (engine stopped) again.
2. Perform “TCM SELF-DIAGNOSTIC PR OCEDURE (No Tools)”. Refer to AT-82, "
Diagnosis Procedure
without CONSULT-III". (The engine warm-up step can be skipped when performing the diagnosis only to
erase the DTC.)
3. Perform “OBD-II SELF-DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE (No tools)”. Refer to EC-84, "
Diagnosis Description"
(HR16DE), EC-542, "Emission-related Diagnostic Information" (MR18DE).
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)INFOID:0000000005397234
DESCRIPTION
The MIL is located on the instrument panel.
1. The MIL will light up when the ignition switch is turned ON with-
out the engine running. This is a bulb check.
• If the MIL does not light up, refer to DI-21, "
Schematic", EC-
440, "Wiring Diagram" (HR16DE), EC-1033, "Wiring Diagram"
(MR18DE).
2. When the engine is start ed, the MIL should go off.
• If the MIL remains on, the on board diagnostic system has detected an engine system malfunction.

TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS
Check for time difference between actual shift timing and the CONSULT-III display. If the difference is
noticeable, mechanical parts (except solenoids, sens ors, etc.) may be malfunctioning. Check mechanical
parts using applicable diagnostic procedures.
2. Shift schedule (which implies gear position) display ed on CONSULT-III and that indicated in Service Man-
ual may differ slightly. This occurs because of the following reasons:
- Actual shift schedule has more or less tolerance or allowance,
- Shift schedule indicated in Service Manual refers to the point where shifts start, and
- Gear position displayed on CONSULT-III indicates the point where shifts are completed.
3. Shift solenoid valve “A” or “B” is displayed on CONSUL T-III at the start of shifting. Gear position is dis-
played upon completion of shifting (which is computed by TCM).

NOTE:
Noise resulting from variations in field strength, such as fading noise and multi-path noise, or external noise
from trains and other sources. It is not a malfunction.
• Fading noise: This noise occurs because of variations in the field strength in a narrow range due to moun-
tains or buildings blocking the signal.
• Multi-path noise: This noise results from the waves sent directly from the broadcast station arriving at the antenna at a different time from the waves t hat reflect off of mountains or buildings.
Noise InspectionINFOID:0000000005395318
The vehicle itself can be a source of noise if noise prevention parts or electrical equipment is malfunctioning.
Check if noise is caused and/or changed by engine speed, ignition switch turned to each position, and opera-
tion of each piece of electrical equipment, and determine the cause.
NOTE:
The source of the noise can be found easily by listening to the noise while removing the fuses of electrical
components, one by one.
