This transmission hasahigh fluidtemperature protec-
tion mode. Ifthe fluid temperature becomestoohigh
(for example, whenclimbing steepgrades inhigh
temperature withheavy loads),engine powerand,
under someconditions, vehiclespeedwillbede-
creased automatically toreduce thechance of
transmission damage.Vehicle speed canbecontrolled with
theaccelerator pedal,butengine andvehicle
speed maybelimited.
Fail-safe

When thefail-safe operation occurs,theCVT willnot
be shifted tothe selected drivingposition.
If the vehicle isdriven underextreme conditions,
such asexcessive wheelspinning andsubse-
quent hardbraking, thefail-safe systemmaybe
activated. Thiswilloccur evenifall electrical
circuits arefunctioning properly.Inthis case,
turn theignition switchoffand wait for10
seconds. Thenplace theignition switchbackin
the ªONº position. Thevehicle shouldreturnto
its normal operating condition. Ifitdoes not
return toits normal operating condition, havea
NISSAN dealercheckthetransmission and
repair itifnecessary.
WARNING:
When thefail-safe operation occurs,vehicle
speed maybegradually reduced.Thereduced
speed maybelower thanother traffic,which
could increase thechance ofacollision. Be
especially carefulwhendriving. Ifnecessary, pull
to the side ofthe road atasafe place andallow
the transmission toreturn tonormal operation,
or have itrepaired ifnecessary.

engine isturned offautomatically .

CAUTION:
At the end ofthe journey theengine mustbe
stopped andignition turnedoff.Lock thevehicle
as normal. Turning theignition switchOFFwill
shut down allelectrical systems.Failuretodo
this may result inaflat battery.

For model withStop/Start SystemorIdling Stop
System, usethespecial batterythatisenhanced
in regard tothe charge-discharge capacityand
life performance. Avoidusinganon-special

stuck vehicle. Inthese cases, theª4WD High
T emp. Stopvehicleº warning appears andthe
4WD mode changes tothe 2WD mode toprotect
the power trainparts. Ifyou stop driving withthe
engine idlinginasafe place andwait until the
ª4WD HighTemp. Stopvehicleº warning disap-
pears, the4WD returns tothe mode previously
selected.
. Brake distance inthe 4WD mode isthe same as
2WD.
CAUTION:
. Depending onthe driving condition, the4WD
mode mayautomatically changefrom2WD
to 4WD even when the2WD mode is
selected. Ifthis occurs whiledriving, the
4WD mode indicator lightwillnotilluminate.
. Donot start theengine withthe4WD mode

The Vehicle Dynamic Control(VDC)/Electronic Stabi-
lity Program (ESP)system usesvarious sensors to
monitor driverinputs andvehicle motion. Undercertain
driving conditions, theVDC/ESP systemhelpsto
perform thefollowing functions.
. Controls brakepressure toreduce wheelslipon
one slipping drivewheel sopower istransferred to
a non slipping drivewheel onthe same axle.
. Controls brakepressure andengine outputto
reduce drivewheel slipbased onvehicle speed
(traction controlfunction) .
. Controls brakepressure atindividual wheelsand
engine outputtohelp thedriver maintain controlof
the vehicle inthe following conditions:
Ð understeer (vehicletendstonot follow the
steered pathdespite increased steeringinput)
Ð oversteer (vehicletendstospin duetocertain
road ordriving conditions) .
The VDC/ESP systemcanhelp thedriver tomaintain
control ofthe vehicle, butitcannot prevent lossof
vehicle control inall driving situations. When
theVDC/ESP systemoperates, theVDC/ESP
warning light
in the meter flashes sonote the
following:
. The road maybeslippery orthe system may
determine someaction isrequired tohelp the
vehicle onthe steered path.
. You may feelapulsation inthe brake pedal and
hear anoise orvibration fromunder thehood. This
is normal andindicates thattheVDC/ESP system
is working properly.
. Adjust yourspeed anddriving tothe road
conditions.
If a malfunction occursinthe system, theVDC/ESP
warning light
illuminates inthe meter. TheVDC/
ESP system automatically turnsoff.
The VDC/ESP OFFswitch isused toturn offthe VDC/
ESP system. TheVDC/ESP offindicator light
illuminates toindicate theVDC/ESP systemisoff.
When theVDC/ESP OFFswitch isused toturn offthe
system, theVDC/ESP systemstilloperates toprevent
one drive wheel fromslipping bytransferring powerto
a non slipping drivewheel. TheVDC/ESP warninglight
flashes ifthis occurs. Allother VDC/ESP
functions areoffand theVDC/ESP warninglight
will not flash. TheVDC/ESP systemisauto-
matically resettoon when theignition switchisplaced
in the ªOFFº position thenback tothe ªONº position.

The computer hasabuilt-in diagnostic featurethat
tests thesystem eachtimeyoustart theengine and
move thevehicle forward orinreverse ataslow speed.
When theself-test occurs,youmay hear aªclunkº noise
and/or feelapulsation inthe brake pedal. Thisis
normal andisnot anindication ofamalfunction.

The vehicle shouldbedriven withtheVehicle Dynamic
Control (VDC)/Electronic StabilityProgram (ESP)
system ONformost driving conditions.
When thevehicle isstuck inmud orsnow ,the VDC/
ESP system reduces theengine outputtoreduce
wheel spin.Theengine speedwillbereduced evenif
the accelerator isdepressed tothe floor. Ifmaximum
engine powerisneeded tofree astuck vehicle, turn
the VDC/ESP systemoff.
T o turn offthe VDC/ESP system,pushtheVDC/ESP
OFF switch. TheVDC/ESP offindicator light
will
illuminate.
Push theVDC/ESP OFFswitch againorrestart the
engine toturn ONthesystem.

or OFF (disabled) throughtheVehicle Information

When theVehicle Dynamic Control(VDC)/Electronic
Stability Program (ESP)OFFswitch isused toturn off
the VDC/ESP system,theActive Trace Control isalso
turned
off.

When theActive Trace Control isoperated andthe
ªChassis Controlºmodeisselected inthe trip
computer, theActive Trace Control graphics are
shown inthe vehicle information display.(See ªTrip
computerº (P.2-34) .)
If the chassis controlwarning message appearsinthe
vehicle information display,it may indicate thatthe
Active Trace Control isnot functioning properly.Have
the system checked byaNISSAN dealerassoon as
possible. (SeeªVehicle information displaywarnings
and indicatorsº (P.2-28) .)
WARNING:
The Active Trace Control maynotbeeffective
depending onthe driving condition. Alwaysdrive
carefully andattentively.
When theActive Trace Control isoperating, youmay
feel apulsation inthe brake pedalandhear anoise.
This isnormal andindicates thattheActive Trace
Control isoperating properly.
Even ifthe Active Trace Control isset toOFF ,some
functions willremain ontoassist thedriver (for
example, avoidance scenes).

The Active Engine Brakefunction addssubtle decel-
eration bycontrolling CVTgearratio, depending onthe

The Active Engine Brakealsoadds subtle deceleration
with gear ratiocontrol according todriver's brake
