When performing anyinspection ormaintenance work
on your vehicle, alwaystakecare toprevent serious
accidental injurytoyourself ordamage tothe vehicle.
The following aregeneral precautions whichshould be
closely observed.
WARNING:
. Park thevehicle onalevel surface, applythe
parking brakesecurely andblock thewheels
to prevent thevehicle frommoving. Move
the shift lever tothe ªPº(Park) position
(Continuously Variable Transmission model)
or the shift lever tothe ªNº(Neutral) position
(Manual Transmission model).
. Besure theignition switchisin the ªOFFº or
ªLOCKº position whenperforming anyparts
replacement orrepairs.
. Do not work under thehood while the
engine ishot. Always turnoffthe engine
and wait until itcools down.
. Ifyou must workwiththeengine running,
keep yourhands, clothing, hairandtools
away frommoving fans,belts andanyother
moving parts.
. Itis advisable tosecure orremove anyloose
clothing andanyjewelry, suchasrings,
watches, etc.before working onyour vehi-
cle.
. Ifyou must runtheengine inan enclosed
space suchasagarage, besure there is
proper ventilation forexhaust gasesto
escape.
. Never getunder thevehicle whileitis
supported byajack. .
Keep smoking materials, flameandsparks
away fromfuelandthebattery.
. Never connect ordisconnect eitherthe
battery orany transistorized component
connector whiletheignition switchisin the
ªONº position.
. Ongasoline enginemodels withtheMulti-
port Fuel Injection (MFI)system, thefuel
filter andfuel lines should beserviced bya
NISSAN dealerbecause thefuel lines are
under highpressure evenwhen theengine is
turned off.
. Your vehicle isequipped withanautomatic
engine cooling fan.Itmay come onatany
time without warning, evenifthe ignition
switch isin the ªOFFº position andthe
engine isnot running. To avoid injury, always
disconnect thenegative batterycablebefore
working nearthefan.
. Always weareyeprotection wheneveryou
work onyour vehicle.
. Never leavetheengine ortransmission
related component harnessconnector dis-
connected whiletheignition switchisin the
ªONº position.
. Avoid directcontact withused engine oiland
coolant. Improperly disposedengineoil,
engine coolant, and/orothervehicle fluids
can hurt theenvironment. Alwaysconform to
local regulations fordisposal ofvehicle
fluids.

as radiator sealer.Additives mayclog the
cooling systemandcause damage tothe
engine, transmission and/orcooling system.
. When adding orreplacing coolant,besure
to use only Genuine NISSANEngineCoolant
or equivalent inits quality withtheproper

. Prolonged andrepeated contactwithused
engine oilmay cause skincancer.
. Avoid directskincontact withused oil.If
contacted, washthoroughly withsoap or hand
cleaner andplenty ofwater assoon as
possible.
. Store usedengine oilinmarked containers
out ofthe reach ofchildren.
V ehicle set-up

1. Place alarge drainpanunder thedrain plug.
2. Remove thedrain plugwithawrench.
3. Remove theoilfiller capand completely drainthe
oil.
If the oilfilter isto be changed, removeand
replace itat this time.
CAUTION:
Waste oilmust bedisposed ofproperly. Check
your local regulations.
4. Remove theplastic coverovertheoilfilter location
by removing thesmall plastic clipsasillustrated.
(For QR25DE engine)
5. Loosen theoilfilter withanoilfilter wrench.
6. Remove theoilfilter byturning itby hand.
7. Wipe theengine oilfilter mounting surfacewitha
clean cloth.
Be sure toremove anyoldgasket remaining onthe
mounting surface. 8.
Apply newengine oiltothe gasket ofthe new oil
filter.
9. Screw inthe oilfilter untilaslight resistance isfelt
and then tighten anadditional 2/3ofaturn to
secure thefilter.
Oil filter tightening torque:
15 to20 N´m
(1.5 to2.0 kg-m, 11to15 ft-lb)
10. Clean andreinstall thedrain plugandnew washer.
Securely tightenthedrain plugwithawrench. Do
not use excessive force.
Drain plugtightening torque:
29 to39 N´m
(3.0 to4.0 kg-m, 22to29 ft-lb)
11. Refill therecommended engineoiland quantity .
(See ªRecommended Fluids/lubricants andcapa-
citiesº (P.9-2) .)
When fillingtheengine oil,donot remove
the dipstick.
12. Securely installtheoilfiller cap.
13. Start theengine.
14. Check thedrain plugforany sign ofleakage.
15. Dispose ofthe used oilinthe proper manner.
Check yourlocal regulations.
16. Check theengine oillevel according tothe proper
procedure. (SeeªChecking engineoillevelº (P.8-
