During thefirst 1,600 km(1,000 miles),follow these
recommendations toobtain maximum engineperfor-
mance andensure thefuture reliability andeconomy of
your newvehicle. Failuretofollow theserecommenda-
tions mayresult inshortened enginelifeand reduced
engine performance.
. Donot drive ataconstant speed,eitherfastor
slow ,for long periods oftime.
. Do not runtheengine over4,000 rpm(for
gasoline enginemodels) .
. Donot accelerate atfull throttle inany gear.
. Donot start quickly .
. Donot brake hardasmuch aspossible.
. Donot tow atrailer foratleast thefirst 800 km
(500 miles) (forAustralia, NewZealand, South
Africa andEurope) .

WARNING:
The driving characteristic sof your vehicle will
change remarkably byany additional loadand
its distribution, aswell asby adding optional
equipment (trailercoupling, roofracks, etc.).
Y our driving styleandspeed mustbeadjusted
according tothe circumstances. Especiallywhen
carrying heavyloads, yourspeed mustbe
reduced adequately.
. Make surethearea around thevehicle isclear.
. Visually inspecttiresfortheir appearance and
condition. Measureandcheck thetire pressure for
proper inflation.
. Check thatallwindows andlights areclean.
. Adjust theseat andhead restraint positions.
. Adjust theinside andoutside rearview mirror
positions.
. Fasten yourseatbeltandaskallpassengers todo
the same.
. Check thatalldoors areclosed.
. Check theoperation ofthe warning lightswhen
the ignition switchisplaced inthe ªONº position.
. Maintenance itemsinthe ª8.Maintenance anddo-

WARNING:
. Never leavechildren oradults whowould
normally requirethesupport ofothers alone
in your vehicle. Petsshould notbeleft alone
either. Theycould unknowingly activate
switches orcontrols andinadvertently be-
come involved inaserious accident and
injure themselves. Onhot, sunny days,
temperatures inaclosed vehicle could
quickly become highenough tocause se-
vere orpossibly fatalillness topeople or
animals.
. Properly secureallluggage tohelp prevent it
from sliding orshifting. Donot place lug-
gage higher thantheseatbacks. Inasudden
stop orcollision, unsecured luggagecould
cause personal injury.
NO TE:
During thefirst fewmonths afterpurchasing a
new vehicle, ifyou smell strong odorsofVolatile
Organic Compounds (VOCs)insidethevehicle,
ventilate thepassenger compartment thor-
oughly. Openallthe windows beforeentering
or while inthe vehicle. Inaddition, whenthe
temperature inthe passenger compartment
rises, orwhen thevehicle isparked indirect
sunlight foraperiod oftime, turnoffthe air
recirculation modeofthe airconditioner and/or
open thewindows toallow sufficient freshair
into thepassenger compartment.

Perform thefollowing procedures toreset theTPMS.
1. Park thevehicle inasafe andlevel place.
2. Apply theparking brakeandplace theshift lever in
the ªPº (Park) position.
3. Adjust thetire pressure onallfour tires tothe
recommended COLDtirepressure shownonthe
tire placard. Useatire pressure gaugetocheck
the tirepressure.

The Vehicle Dynamic Control(VDC)/Electronic Stabi-
lity Program (ESP)system usesvarious sensors to
monitor driverinputs andvehicle motion. Undercertain
driving conditions, theVDC/ESP systemhelpsto
perform thefollowing functions.
. Controls brakepressure toreduce wheelslipon
one slipping drivewheel sopower istransferred to
a non slipping drivewheel onthe same axle.
. Controls brakepressure andengine outputto
reduce drivewheel slipbased onvehicle speed
(traction controlfunction) .
. Controls brakepressure atindividual wheelsand
engine outputtohelp thedriver maintain controlof
the vehicle inthe following conditions:
Ð understeer (vehicletendstonot follow the
steered pathdespite increased steeringinput)
Ð oversteer (vehicletendstospin duetocertain
road ordriving conditions) .
The VDC/ESP systemcanhelp thedriver tomaintain
control ofthe vehicle, butitcannot prevent lossof
vehicle control inall driving situations. When
theVDC/ESP systemoperates, theVDC/ESP
warning light
in the meter flashes sonote the
following:
. The road maybeslippery orthe system may
determine someaction isrequired tohelp the
vehicle onthe steered path.
. You may feelapulsation inthe brake pedal and
hear anoise orvibration fromunder thehood. This
is normal andindicates thattheVDC/ESP system
is working properly.
. Adjust yourspeed anddriving tothe road
conditions.
If a malfunction occursinthe system, theVDC/ESP
warning light
illuminates inthe meter. TheVDC/
ESP system automatically turnsoff.
The VDC/ESP OFFswitch isused toturn offthe VDC/
ESP system. TheVDC/ESP offindicator light
illuminates toindicate theVDC/ESP systemisoff.
When theVDC/ESP OFFswitch isused toturn offthe
system, theVDC/ESP systemstilloperates toprevent
one drive wheel fromslipping bytransferring powerto
a non slipping drivewheel. TheVDC/ESP warninglight
flashes ifthis occurs. Allother VDC/ESP
functions areoffand theVDC/ESP warninglight
will not flash. TheVDC/ESP systemisauto-
matically resettoon when theignition switchisplaced
in the ªOFFº position thenback tothe ªONº position.

lightº (P.2-19) .
The computer hasabuilt-in diagnostic featurethat
tests thesystem eachtimeyoustart theengine and
move thevehicle forward orinreverse ataslow speed.
When theself-test occurs, youmay hear aªclunkº noise
and/or feelapulsation inthe brake pedal. Thisis
normal andisnot anindication ofamalfunction.
