position whiledriving. Thesteering wheelmay
lock andcause thedriver tolose control ofthe
vehicle, resulting inserious vehicledamage or
personal injury.
CAUTION:
. Do not leave thevehicle forextended
periods oftime when theignition switchis
in the ªONº position andtheengine isnot
running. Thiscandischarge thebattery.
. Use electrical accessories withtheengine
running toavoid discharging thevehicle
battery. Ifyou must useaccessories while
the engine isnot running, donot use them
for extended periodsoftime anddonot use
multiple electrical accessories atthe same
time.

If the ignition switchisplaced inthe ªOFFº orªACCº
position forany reason whiletheshift lever isin any
positions otherthantheªPº (Park) position, theignition
switch cannot beplaced inthe ªLOCKº position.
If the ignition switchcannot beplaced inthe ªLOCKº
position, performthefollowing steps:
1. Apply theparking brake.
2. Place theignition switchinthe ªONº position
while depressing thefoot brake pedal.
3. Move theshift lever tothe ªPº (Park) position.

This transmission hasahigh fluidtemperature protec-
tion mode. Ifthe fluid temperature becomestoohigh
(for example, whenclimbing steepgrades inhigh
temperature withheavy loads),engine powerand,
under someconditions, vehiclespeedwillbede-
creased automatically toreduce thechance of
transmission damage.Vehicle speed canbecontrolled with
theaccelerator pedal,butengine andvehicle
speed maybelimited.

When thefail-safe operation occurs,theCVT willnot
be shifted tothe selected drivingposition.
If the vehicle isdriven underextreme conditions,
such asexcessive wheelspinning andsubse-
quent hardbraking, thefail-safe systemmaybe
activated. Thiswilloccur evenifall electrical
circuits arefunctioning properly.Inthis case,
turn theignition switchoffand wait for10
seconds. Thenplace theignition switchbackin
the ªONº position. Thevehicle shouldreturnto
its normal operating condition. Ifitdoes not
return toits normal operating condition, havea
NISSAN dealercheckthetransmission and
repair itifnecessary.
WARNING:
When thefail-safe operation occurs,vehicle
speed maybegradually reduced.Thereduced
speed maybelower thanother traffic,which
could increase thechance ofacollision. Be
