AUTOMATIC AUTOADAPTIVE GEARBOX Moving Off
To move off, move the selector lever to position
N or P. Press the brake to exit
position P. Stopped or parked Always leave the lever in position Pwhen you get out of your vehicle.
If not, a buzzer will sound when you open the driver's door. Positions of the selector lever These positions are displayed on the instrument panel. P. Park: use with the handbrake.
R. Reverse: this must only be engaged when the vehicle is stationary, engine at idle.
N. Neutral: if N is engaged by mistake while the car is moving, allow the engine
to return to idle before engaging a new forward gear.
D. Drive: in this position, the four gears change automatically. The gear changepoints vary depending on the programme selected.
3. Automatic changing of the first three gears only. Select this position when you notice frequent changes between third and fourth gear (town driving or on winding roads).
2. Automatic changing of the first two gears only. This position is particularly suitable for mountain roads, when going uphill (to make the best use of the engine's power) or downhill (engine braking).

Normal operation of the ABS may make itself felt by slight vibrationsof the brake pedal. In emergency braking, press very firmly without releasingthe pressure. ANTI-LOCK BRAKING
SYSTEM (ABS) AND THEELECTRONIC BRAKE FORCEDISTRIBUTION (EBFD)
The ABS, in conjunction with the electronic brake force distribution, increases the stability and manoe-vrability of your vehicle, particularlyon poor or slippery road surfaces. Note:
when changing wheels (tyres
and rims), make sure that these are approved. The anti-lock braking system comes into operation automatically whenthere is a risk of wheel lock.
When this warning lightcomes on, accompanied bya buzzer and the message"ABS fault" , it indicates
that there is a malfunction of theABS, which can cause a loss ofcontrol of the vehicle when braking.
HANDBRAKE Locking Pull the handbrake to immobilise your vehicle.
Warning:
when parking on a slope,
direct your wheels towards the pavement and pull the handbrake. Unlocking Pull on the handle and press the button to release the handbrake.
Illumination of this warninglight and of the STOPwarning
light, accompanied by an audi-ble signal (while the vehicle is
being driven) and the message "hand-
brake on" on the multi-function display,
indicates that the handbrake is still onor has not been properly released.
EMERGENCY BRAKING
ASSISTANCE SYSTEM
In an emergency, this system enables the optimum braking pres-
sure to be reached more quickly, thus reducing the stopping distance. It is triggered by the speed at which
the brake pedal is activated. The
effect of this is a reduction in theresistance of the pedal and an
increase in braking efficiency. In the event of emergency braking, depending on the force of the decel-eration, the hazard warning lights are
switched on automatically. They are
switched off automatically on accel-eration.
When this warning lightcomes on, connected to the
STOP and ABS warning
lights, accompanied by a
buzzer and the message "Braking
fault" , it indicates that there is a mal-
function of the electronic brake forcedistribution, which can cause a loss ofcontrol of the vehicle when braking.
Stop immediately. In both cases, consult a Peugeot
dealer.

CHECKS Battery
At the start of winter, have your bat-
tery checked by a PEUGEOT dea-
ler. Air filter and passenger compartment filter Have the filter elements replaced
regularly.
If you drive in dusty
conditions, change them twice asoften. Brake pads Brake pad wear depends on the style of driving, in particular forvehicles which are used in town, over short distances. It may be necessary to check the thickness of the pads, even betweenservices. Handbrake Where the handbrake travel is too great or there is a reduction in theperformance of the system, thehandbrake should be adjusted, evenbetween services. Have the system checked by a
PEUGEOT dealer. Manual gearbox This does not need an oil change. Check the level, according to themanufacturer's servicing schedule. Automatic gearbox This does not need an oil change. Have the level checked by a
PEUGEOT dealer, according to themanufacturer's servicing schedule. Oil filter
Change the filter regularly, in accor- dance with the servicing schedule.Only use products recommended by
PEUGEOT.
To ensure best performance fromcomponents as important as thepower steering and the brakingsystem, PEUGEOT selects andoffers quite specific products.

Without lifting (four wheels on the ground)
You must always use a tow bar. From the front or the rear Attach the tow bar to the towing eye. By lifting (two wheels only on the ground) It is preferable to lift the vehicle by the wheels. Special features of the automatic gearboxes When towing with all four wheels on the ground, the following rules mustbe adhered to:
- gear lever in position
N,
- tow the vehicle at a speed less than 30 mph (50 km/h) over a dis- tance of not more than 30 miles(50 km),
- do not add oil to the gearbox. BOOT LUGGAGE CARRIER*
A boot luggage carrier is available
from your PEUGEOT dealer. This equipment is not compatible
with the fitting of a rear spoiler. When it is used, take care not to conceal the third brake light. Follow the manufacturer's recom- mendations.
* Available as an accessory.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION115
TOWING A TRAILER,
CARAVAN, BOAT etc.
Only use original PEUGEOT tow bars that have been tested andapproved from the design stage of
your vehicle. The tow bar must be
fitted by a PEUGEOT dealer.
Your vehicle is primarily designed for transporting people and luggagebut it may also be used for towing a
trailer. Driving with a trailer subjects the towing vehicle to more significantstress and its driver must beparticularly careful. Air density decreases with altitude, thus reducing engine performance.Above 1000 metres, the maximumtowing load must be reduced by 10% and so on for every 1000 metres of altitude.Driving advice Distribution of loads :
Distribute
the load in the trailer so that the heaviest items are as close as pos-sible to the axle and the nose weightapproaches the maximum permittedwithout exceeding it. Cooling :
Towing a trailer on a slope increases the temperature of the coolant. As the fan is electrically controlled, its cooling capacity is not dependenton the engine speed.
On the contrary, use a high gear to lower the engine speed and reduceyour speed. The maximum towing load on a long slope depends on the gradient andthe outside temperature. In all cases, pay attention to the coolant temperature. If the warning light comes on, stop
the vehicle and switch off the engineas soon as possible. Tyres : Check the tyre pressures of the tow-
ing vehicle and of the trailer, observ-ing the recommended pressures. Braking :
Towing increases the braking distance. Lights : Check the electrical signalling on the
trailer. Side wind :
Take into acount the increased sensitivity to side wind.
