ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM
(ABS) AND THE ELECTRONICBRAKE FORCE DISTRIBUTION(EBFD)
The ABS, in conjunction with the electronic brake force distribution, increases the stability andmanoevrability of your vehicle onbraking, in particular on poor or slip-pery road surfaces. Note: when changing wheels (tyres
and rims), make sure that these are approved. The anti-lock braking system comes into operation automatically whenthere is a risk of wheel lock.
When this warning lightcomes on, accompanied bya buzzer and the message"ABS fault" , it indicates
that there is a malfunction of
the ABS, which can cause a loss ofcontrol of the vehicle when braking.
When this warning lightcomes on, connected to the
STOPand ABS warning
lights, accompanied by abuzzer and the message
'Braking fault' , it indicates that there
is a malfunction of the electronicbrake force distribution, which cancause a loss of control of the vehiclewhen braking.
Normal operation of the ABS may make itself felt by slight vibrationsof the brake pedal. In emergency braking, press very firmly without releasingthe pressure.
EMERGENCY BRAKING
ASSISTANCE SYSTEM
In an emergency, this system enables the optimum braking pres-
sure to be reached more quickly, thus reducing the stopping distance. It is triggered by the speed at which
the brake pedal is activated. The
effect of this is a reduction in theresistance of the pedal and an
increase in braking efficiency.
Stop immediately. In both cases, consult a PEUGEOT
dealer.

TRACTION CONTROL (ASR)
AND DYNAMIC STABILITY
CONTROL (ESP) These systems are linked and com-
plement the ABS.
The ASR system optimises drive to prevent the wheels skidding, by act-ing on the brakes of the drive wheelsand on the engine. It also allows thedirectional stability of the vehicle tobe improved on acceleration. If there is a variation between the tra- jectory followed by the vehicle and
that required by the driver, the ESPsystem automatically acts on theengine and the brake of one or morewheels, in order to put the vehicleback on course.Operating check
When a malfunction of thesystems occurs, the switchlight flashes and the warninglight comes on, accompa-nied by an audible signal
and the message "ESP/ASR not
functioning" on the multifunction
display.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer to have the system checked.

Disarming the ASR/ESP systems In exceptional conditions (starting a vehicle which is bogged down, stuck
in snow, on soft ground, ...), it may
be advisable to disarm the ASR and
ESP systems, so that the wheels canmove freely and regain grip.
Press the "ESP OFF" switch,
located on the central section of the fascia.
The switch lights up and thewarning light comes on: the
ASR and ESP systems aredisarmed.
These are triggered again: automatically if the ignition is
switched off,
 automatically above 30 mph (50 km/h),
 manually by pressing the switchagain.
Operation of the ASR and ESP systems
The warning light flashes if
the ASR or ESP is activated.
The ESP/ASR systems offer exceptional safety innormal driving, but thisshould not encourage thedriver to take extra risks
or drive at high speed. The correct functioning of these systems depends on observationof the manufacturer's recommen-dations regarding the wheels (tyresand rims), the braking components, the electronic components, and thePEUGEOT assembly and opera-tion procedures. After an impact, have the system
checked by a PEUGEOT dealer.

AIR BAGS The air bags have been designed to maximise the safety of the occupantsin the event of serious collisions. They work in conjunction with the
force-limiting seat belts. The elec-tronic detectors register and analyseany abrupt deceleration of the vehicle:if the triggering threshold is reached, the air bags inflate instantly and pro-tect the occupants of the vehicle. Immediately after the impact, the air bags deflate rapidly so that they donot hinder the visibility of the occu-pants nor their exit if necessary fromthe vehicle. The air bags are not deployed in the case of collisions which are not serious, for which the seat belt is suf-ficient to ensure maximum protec-
tion. The seriousness of a collisiondepends on the nature of the obstacleand the speed of the vehicle at themoment of the collision. Air bags only operate when the ignition is switched on. Note:the gas escaping from the air
bags can be a minor irritant. FRONT AIR BAGS These are folded in the centre of the steering wheel for the driver and in
the fascia for the front passenger.
They are deployed simultaneously, except in cases where the passengerair bag is disarmed. Front air bag fault
If this warning light comes on, accompanied by anaudible signal and the mes-sage "Air bag fault" on the
multifunction display, con-
tact a PEUGEOT dealer to have thesystem checked. Disarming the passenger air bag*
To ensure the safety of your child, it is essential to disarm the pas-senger air bag when you install arear-facing child seat on the frontpassenger seat. Otherwise, thechild would risk being killed orseriously injured if the air bagwere to inflate.
With the ignition switched off ,
insert the key into the passenger air bag disarming switch 1, turn it
to the "OFF"position, then
remove the key keeping the slotin this position.
The air bag warning light on theinstrument panel is lit throughout thedisarming process.

If the two "Air bag fault" and "Passenger air bag dis-armed" warning lights come
on permanently, do not
install a rearward facing child seat
and consult a PEUGEOT dealer. In the "OFF" position, the passenger
air bag will not be triggered in the event of an impact. As soon as the child seat is removed, turn the air bag slot to the"ON" position to re-activate the air
bag and thus ensure the safety ofyour passenger in the event of animpact. Disarming check This is confirmed by an indicator light, accompanied by an audible sig-nal and a message on the multifunc-
tion display.
With the ignition on (2ndnotch), illumination of thiswarning light accompaniedby an audible signal and the
message "Passenger air bag deacti-
vated" on the multi-function display,
indicates that the passenger air bag isdisarmed (switch in the "OFF" posi-
tion).SIDE AIR BAGS* AND CURTAIN AIR BAGS*
The side air bags are incorporated into the front seat backs on the doorside.
The curtain air bags are incorporatedinto the door pillars and the upper partof the passenger compartment. They are deployed independently of
each other, on whichever side the col-lision occurs. Operating check This is confirmed by an indicator light, accompanied by an audible signal anda message on the multifunction dis-
play.
If this indicator light comeson, accompanied by an audi-ble signal and the message"Air bag fault" on the multi-
function display, contact a
PEUGEOT dealer to have the systemchecked.
