ELECTRONIC STABILITY
PROGRAMME (ESP)
The electronic stability programme (ESP) incorporates the following sys-tems:
- the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and the braking system (EBFD),- the emergency braking assistance system,- the traction control (ASR),- the dynamic stability control (DSC).
Traction control (ASR)
The ASR system optimises traction in order to avoid wheel slip by acting on the brakes of the driving wheels and on the engine. It also improves the di-rectional stability of the vehicle on ac-celeration.
Dynamic stability control (DSC)
If there is a difference between the path followed by the vehicle and that required by the driver, the DSC moni-tors each wheel and automatically acts on the brake of one or more wheels and on the engine to return the vehicle to the required path, within the limits of the laws of physics.
Operating modes
Anti-lock braking system (ABS) and braking system (EBFD)
Definitions
Anti-lock braking system (ABS) and braking system (EBFD)
This system improves the stability and manoeuvrability of your vehicle when braking and offers improved control, in particular on poor or slippery road sur-faces.
The ABS prevents wheel lock in the event of emergency braking.
The braking system provides integral management of the braking pressure wheel by wheel.
Emergency braking assistance system
In an emergency, this system ena-bles you to reach the optimum braking pressure more quickly and therefore reduce the stopping distance.
It is triggered in relation to the speed at which the brake pedal is pressed. This is felt by a reduction in the resist-ance of the pedal and an increase in the effectiveness of the braking.
When this warning light comes on, accompanied by a buzzer and a message, it indicates that there is a mal-function of the ABS, which can cause a loss of control of the vehi-cle when braking.
When this warning light comes on, connected to the STOP and ABS warn-ing lights, accompanied by a buzzer and a message, it indicates that there is a malfunction of the electronic brake force distribution, which can cause a loss of control of the vehicle when braking.
Stop immediately.
In both cases, consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Dynamic stability control (DSC)
Operation of the DSC
When changing wheels (tyres and rims), make sure that these are approved.
Normal operation of the ABS may make itself felt by slight vibrations of the brake pedal.
In emergency braking, press very firmly without releasing the pressure.
Operating fault
When a system malfunction occurs, the warning light comes on accompanied by an audible signal and a message on the multifunction display.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer to have the system checked.
The DSC offers improved safety during normal driving but should not encourage the driver to take extra risks (late braking) or drive at very high speeds.
Operation of the system is guaran-teed on condition that the manufactur-er’s instructions regarding the wheels (tyres and rims), the braking compo-nents, the electronic components and the PEUGEOT network assembly and maintenance/repair procedures are complied with.
Following an impact, have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer.

The indicator light comes on.
Deactivation
In exceptional conditions (starting the vehicle when it is stuck in mud, immo-bilised in snow, on unstable ground…), it may prove useful to deactivate the DSC.
 Press the "ESP OFF" switch, located on the centre console.
The switch light and the indicator light come on: the DSC no longer acts on the operation of the engine.

SEAT BELTS
Front seat belt height adjustment :
 To lower the attachment point, squeeze control 1 and slide it down-wards.
 To raise the attachment point, slide control 1 upwards.
Detection of fastening of the front seat belts
When the ignition is switched on, if a front passenger has not fastened his seat belt and if the vehicle speed is below 13 mph (20 km/h), you are warned by lighting of the seat belt warning light.
The warning light switches off when the seat belt(s) concerned is(are) fas-tened.
If the vehicle speed is above 13 mph (20 km/h), you are warned by flash-ing of the seat belt warning light, an audible signal and a message on the multifunction screen locating the unfastened seat belt(s).Front seat belts withpre-tensioner and force limiter
In the event of a serious impact, the pre-tensioning system instantly tightens the seat belts firmly against the bodies of the occupants.
The pre-tensioning seat belts are armed when the ignition is on.
The force limiter reduces the pressure of the seat belt on the body of the oc-cupant in the event of an accident.
Rear seat belts
The rear seats are each fitted with a three-point inertia reel seat belt.
These seat belts have a force limiter.
To fasten the seat belts
Pull the strap, then insert the end into the clasp.
Check that the seat belt is fastened correctly by pulling the strap.
To unfasten the seat belts
Press the button on the clasp.
Note: a bag or an animal placed on the front passenger seat may trigger the lighting of the warning light.
The audible signal ceases and the warning light switches off when the seat belt concerned is fastened.
After two minutes without any action on the seat belts, the flashing warning light remains on permanently and the audible signal ceases.
All of the warnings cease when a door is opened or when the engine is switched off.

Wherever you are seated in the vehicle, always fasten your seat belt, even for short jour-neys.
Do not invert the seat belt buckles as they will not fulfil their role fully.
The seat belts are fitted with an inertia reel permitting automatic adjustment of the length of the strap to your size. The seat belt is stored automatically when not in use.
Before and after use, ensure that the seat belt is rolled up correctly.
The lower part of the strap must be positioned as low as possible on the pelvis.
The upper part must be positioned in the hollow of the shoulder.
The inertia reels are fitted with an au-tomatic locking device which comes into operation in the event of a colli-sion or emergency braking. You can release the device by pulling rapidly on the strap and releasing it.
In order to be effective, a seat belt:
- must be tightened as close to the body as possible,- must restrain one person of adult size only,- must not bear any trace of cuts or fraying,- must be pulled in front of you with a smooth movement, checking that it does not twist,- must not be transformed or modified to avoid altering its performance.
In accordance with current safety reg-ulations, all repairs and checks must be carried out by a PEUGEOT dealer who guarantees that the work is car-ried out correctly.
Have your seat belts checked regularly by a PEUGEOT dealer and particularly if the straps show signs of damage.
Clean the seat belt straps with soapy water or a textile cleaning product, sold by PEUGEOT dealers.
After folding or moving a seat or rear bench seat, ensure that the seat belt is positioned and rolled up correctly.
Recommendations for children
Use a suitable child seat if the passen-ger is less than 12 years old or shorter than one metre fifty.
Never use the same seat belt to secure more than one person. Never allow a child to travel on your lap.
Depending on the nature and serious-ness of the impacts, the pre-tensioning device may be triggered before and in-dependently of the air bags.
In all cases, the air bag warning light comes on.
Following an impact, have the seat belts system checked, and if necessary replaced, by a PEUGEOT dealer.

AIR BAGS
The air bags are only operational when the ignition is on.
The air bags have been designed to maximise the safety of the occupants in the event of violent collisions. They supplement the action of the force-limiting seat belts. In this case, the electronic detectors record and ana-lyse the sharp deceleration of the ve-hicle: if the deployment threshold is reached, the air bags are deployed instantaneously and protect the occu-pants of the vehicle.
Immediately after the impact, the air bags deflate rapidly so that they do not hinder the visibility of the occupants or their possible exit from the vehicle.
The air bags will not be deployed in the case of minor impacts for which the seat belt is sufficient to provide maximum protection. The seriousness of the impact depends on the nature of the obstacle, the location of the im-pact and the speed of the vehicle at the time of the collision.
Front air bags
These are folded in the centre of the steering wheel for the driver and in the fascia for the front passenger. They are deployed simultaneously, except in cases where the passenger air bag is disarmed.
Front side air bags
The side air bags are incorporated into the front seat backs. They are deployed independently of each other depending on which side the collision occurs.
Steering column air bag*
The steering column air bag is incorpo-rated in the fascia below the steering column.
It protects the driver’s lower limbs.
It is deployed at the same time as the front air bags.
In the event of a malfunction
* According to country.
If this indicator light comes on, accom-panied by the audible signal and the message on the multi-function display, contact a PEUGEOT dealer to have the system checked.
The gas released by the de-ployed air bags may cause slight irritation.
Instrument panel indicator light.
Curtain air bags
The curtain air bags are incorporated into the door pillars and the upper part of the passenger compartment.
They are deployed independently of each other depending on which side the collision occurs and protect the oc-cupants in the front and in the rear.
