Operating abnormality Any operating abnormality is indica- ted by flashing of the Snow warninglight on the instrument panel. In this situation the gearbox operates in downgrade mode (locked in 3rd
gear). You may feel a substantialknock when changing from Pto R
and from Nto R(this will not cause
any damage to the gearbox). Do not exceed 100 km/h, keeping within the limit of local speed restric-tions.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer as soon as possible. MANUAL GEARBOX Reverse
To
change to reverse gear, lift the
ring under the gear lever knob and push the gear lever to the left then tothe front. Reverse gear can only be engaged when the vehicle is stationary withthe engine idling. HANDBRAKE Applying When parking, pull the handbrake to immobilise your vehicle. W
arning: when parking on a slope,
direct your wheels towards the pave- ment and apply the handbrake.
Releasing Pull the handle and press the button to release the handbrake. Lighting of this warning lightindicates that the handbrakeis still applied has not been
released correctly.

ABS ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM
The ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBFD) increases thestability and manoeuvrability of yourvehicle, particularly on poor or slip-pery road surfaces. Note: when changing wheels (tyres
and rims), make sure that these are approved. The anti-lock braking system comes into operation automatically whenthere is a risk of wheel lock.

The ASR system optimises drive to prevent the wheels skidding, byacting on the brakes of the drivewheels and on the engine. It alsoallows the directional stability of thevehicle to be improved on accelera-tion.
Operation of the ASR systemWhen this system is opera- ting, this light flashes.
TRACTION CONTROL (ASR) This system is linked with and com-
plements the ABS. Disarming the ASR system In exceptional conditions (starting the vehicle when stuck in mud, on
snow, on unstable ground ... ), it may
prove useful to disarm the ASR sys-tem to allow the wheels to skid andregain grip. ☞
Press switch Ain the centre of
the instrument panel.
The indicator light on the switch and the warning light
come on: the ASR systemwill no longer act on theoperation of the engine orthe brakes. It will come into operation again: ☞
automatically above 30 km/h,
☞ manually when the switch is pressed again.
Operating check When a malfunction of thesystem occurs, the warninglight on the instrument panelcomes on.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer to havethe system checked.
YOUR BOXER IN DETAIL 133
Normal operation of the ABS may make itself felt by slight vibrationsof the brake pedal. In emergency braking, press very firmly without releasingthe pressure.
The operation of the sys- tem is ensured to theextent to which therecommendations of themanufacturer regarding
the wheels (tyres and wheel rims),the braking components, the elec-tronic components and the assem-bly and repair procedures withinthe PEUGEOT network are obser-ved. After an impact, have the system
checked by a PEUGEOT dealer.
Illumination of this warning light indicates a malfunctionof the electronic brake forcedistribution, which cancause a loss of control of
the vehicle when braking.
Stop immediately.

Removing the wheel ☞Place a chock under the wheel diagonally opposite to the one tobe changed.
☞ Remove the trim, using thewheelbrace 4, pulling at the valve
passage hole.
☞ Loosen the wheel bolts using thewheelbrace 4.
☞ Place the jack 1in contact with
one of the four locating points E
on the sub-frame, (the one whichis closest to the wheel to bechanged).
☞ Extend the jack 1using the rat-
chet spanner 2until its base is in
contact with the ground. Ensurethat the centre line of the base ofthe jack is straight above thelocating point E. ☞
Raise the vehicle.
☞ Unscrew the bolts and removethe wheel.
Fitting a wheel ☞ Position the wheel.
☞ Tighten the bolts by hand.
☞ Partly tighten the bolts using the wheelbrace 4.
☞ Fold the jack 1and remove it.
☞ Fully tighten the bolts using thewheelbrace 4.
☞ Replace the wheel trim, startingby placing the wheel trim notchopposite the valve, and press iton using the palm of the hand.
☞ Put the tools and the wheel backin the boot. For your safety, always change the wheel: - on level, stable, non-slip- pery ground,
- with the handbrake on and the ignition switched off,
- with first or reverse gear enga- ged (position Pfor the automatic
gearbox),
- with the vehicle chocked. Never go underneath a vehicle that is supported only by a jack(use a ramp) After changing the wheel: - have the tightening of the bolts and the tyre pressure checkedby a PEUGEOT dealer as soonas possible,
- have the punctured tyre repai- red and refit it to the vehicle assoon as possible.

TOWING A TRAILER,
CARAVAN, BOAT ETC.
Only use original PEUGEOT tow bars that have been tested andapproved from the design stage ofyour vehicle. The tow bar must be fitted by a
PEUGEOT dealer. Y our vehicle is basically designed
for transporting people and luggage but it may also be used for towing a
trailer. Driving with a trailer subjects the towing vehicle to more significantstress and its driver must be particu-larly careful. Air density decreases with altitude, thus reducing engine performance.Above 1000 metres, the maximumtowing load must be reduced by 10%and so on for every 1000 metres ofaltitude. Driving advice Distribution of loads:
Distribute the
load in the trailer so that the heaviest items are as close as possible to theaxle and the nose weight approachesthe maximum permitted without excee-ding it. Cooling: towing a trailer on a slope
increases the temperature of the coolant. As the fan is electrically controlled, its cooling capacity is not dependenton the engine speed.
On the contrary, use a high gear to lower the engine speed, and reduceyour speed. The maximum towing load on a long slope depends on the gradient andthe outside temperature. In all cases, pay attention to the coolant temperature. If the warning light comes on, stop
the vehicle and switch off the engineas soon as possible. T
yres: check the tyre pressures of
the towing vehicle and of the trailer, observing the recommended pres-sures. Braking: towing increases the braking
distance.Lights: check the electrical signalling
on the trailer.Side wind: take into acount the
increased sensitivity to side wind.
