ignition switch position will change to “ACC”.
NOTE:
.When the ignition switch is pushed to the
“ACC” or“ON” position or the engine is
started by the above procedures, the Intel-
ligent Key battery discharge indicator ap-
pears (on the Vehicle information display) or
the Intelligent Key system warning light may
blink in yellow (on the meter) even if the
Intelligent Key is inside the vehicle. This is
not a malfunction. To stop the warning light
from blinking, touch the ignition switch with
the Intelligent Key again.
. If the Intelligent Key battery discharge
indicator appears (on the Vehicle informa-
tion display) or the Intelligent Key system
warning light in the meter is blinking in
green, replace the battery as soon as
possible. (See “Battery”(P.8-23) .)GA\fOLI\bE E\bGI\bE
1. Apply the parking brake.
2. Depress the foot brake pedal.
3.Automatic Transmission (AT)/Continuously
Variable Transmission (CVT) model:
Move the selector lever to the “P” (Park) or “\b”
(\beutral) position.
The starter is designed to operate only when
the selector lever is in the proper position.
Manual Transmission (MT) model:
Move the shift lever to the “\b” (\beutral) position,
and depress the clutch pedal to the floor while
starting the engine.
The starter is designed to not operate unless
the clutch pedal is depressed.
4. Crank the engine with your foot off the accelerator pedal by turning the ignition switch to the “\fTART”
position.
5. Immediately release the ignition switch when the engine starts. If the engine starts, but fails to run,
repeat the above procedures.
If the engine is very hard to start in extremely cold
or hot weather, depress the accelerator pedal and
hold it to help start the engine.
CAUTION:
.Do not operate the starter for more than 15
seconds at a time. If the engine does not
start, turn the ignition switch off and wait 10
seconds before cranking the engine again.
Otherwise, the starter could be damaged.
. If it becomes necessary to start the engine
with a booster battery and jumper cables, the instructions and cautions contained in
the “6. In case of emergency” section should
be carefully followed.
6. Allow the engine to idle for at least 30 seconds after starting the engine to warm-up. Drive at
moderate speeds for a short distance first,
especially in cold weather.
CAUTION:
Do not leave the vehicle unattended while the
engine is warming up.

5-12Starting and driving
.When stopping the vehicle on an uphill
grade, do not hold the vehicle by depressing
the accelerator pedal. The foot brake pedal
should be depressed in this situation.
Starting vehicle
1. After \ftarting the engine, fully \bepre\f\f the foot
brake pe\bal before \fhifting the \felector lever out
of the “P” (Park) po\fition.
2. Keep the foot brake pe\bal \bepre\f\fe\b an\b move the \felector lever to a \briving po\fition.
3. Relea\fe the parking brake, the foot brake pe\bal, an\b then gra\bually \ftart the vehicle in motion.
The AT is designed so the foot brake pedal
MUST be depressed before shifting from the “P”
(Park) position to any driving position while the
ignition switch is in the “ON”position.
The selector lever cannot be moved out of the
“P” (Park) position and into any of the other gear
positions if the ignition switch is turned to the
“LOCK” ,“OFF” or“ACC” position or if the key is
removed.
CAUTION:
. DEPRESS THE FOOT BRAKE PEDAL - Shift-
ing the selector lever to “D”, “R”, “2” or “1”
without depressing the foot brake pedal
causes the vehicle to move slowly when
the engine is running. Make sure the foot
brake pedal is depressed fully and the
vehicle is stopped before shifting the selec-
tor lever.
. MAKE SURE OF THE SELECTOR LEVER
POSITION - Make sure the selector lever is
in the desired position. “D”, “2” and “1” are
used to move forward and “R” to back up. .
WARM UP THE ENGINE - Due to the higher
idle speeds when the engine is cold, extra
caution must be exercised when shifting the
selector lever into the driving position
immediately after starting the engine.

WARNING:
. Apply the parking brake if the selector lever
is in any position while the engine is not
running. Failure to do so could cause the
vehicle to move unexpectedly or roll away
and result in serious personal injury or
property damage.
. If the selector lever cannot be moved from
the P (Park) position while the engine is
running and the foot brake pedal is de-
pressed, the stop lights may not work.
Malfunctioning stop lights could cause an
accident injuring yourself and others.
