1. Models with Intelligent KEY system: Place theignition switch in the “OFF” or “LOCK” \bosition.
Models without Intelligent KEY system: Place the
ignition switch in the “LOCK” \bosition and remove
the key.
2. A\b\bly the \barking brake.
3. De\bress the shi\ft lock release button.
4. Push and hold the selector lever button and move the selector lever to the “N” (Neutral) \bosition
while holding down the shi\ft lock release button.
5. Place the ignition switch to the “ON” \bosition to release the steering wheel lock.
The vehicle may be moved, by \bushing, to the desired
location.
I\f the selector lever cannot be moved out o\f the “P”
(Park) \bosition, have a RENAULT dealer check the AT
system as soon as \bossible.
Fail-sa\fe
When the \fail-sa\fe o\beration occurs, the AT will be
locked in third gear.
If the vehicle is driven under extreme conditions,
such as excessive wheel spinning and subse-
quent hard braking, the fail-safe system may be
activated. This will occur even if all electrical
circuits are functioning properly. In this case,
turn the ignition switch off and wait for 3
seconds. Then turn the ignition switch back to
the “ON” position. The vehicle should return to
its normal operating condition. If it does not
return to its normal operating condition, have a
RENAULT dealer check the transmission and
repair it if necessary.
DRIVING WITH CONTINUOUSLY VARI-
ABLE TRANSMISSION (CVT)
The Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) in your
vehicle is electronically controlled to \broduce maximum
\bower and smooth o\beration.
The recommended o\berating \brocedures \for this
transmission are shown on the \following \bages. Follow
these \brocedures \for maximum vehicle \ber\formance
and driving enjoyment.
WARNING:
Do not downshift abruptly on slippery roads.
This may cause a loss of control.
CAUTION:
. The cold engine idle speed is high, so use
caution when shifting the transmission into
a forward or reverse position before the
engine has warmed up. .
Avoid revving up the engine while the
vehicle is stopped. This could cause unex-
pected vehicle movement.
. Never shift to either the “P” (Park) or “R”
(Reverse) position while the vehicle is mov-
ing. This could cause serious damage to the
transmission.
. Start the engine in either the “P” (Park) or
“N” (Neutral) position. The engine will not
start in any other position. If it does, have
your vehicle checked by a RENAULT dealer.
. Shift into the “P” (Park) position and apply
the parking brake when at a standstill for
longer than a short waiting period.
. Keep the engine at idling speed while
shifting from the “N” (Neutral) position to
any driving position.
. When stopping the vehicle on an uphill
grade, do not hold the vehicle by depressing
the accelerator pedal. The foot brake pedal
should be depressed in this situation.
Starting vehicle
1. A\fter starting the engine, \fully de\bress the \foot
brake \bedal be\fore moving the selector lever out
o\f the “P” (Park) \bosition.
2. Kee\b the \foot brake \bedal de\bressed and move the selector lever to a driving \bosition.
3. Release the \barking brake, the \foot brake \bedal, and then gradually start the vehicle in motion.
The CVT is designed so the foot brake pedal
MUST be depressed before shifting from the “P”
(Park) position to any driving position while the
ignition switch is in the “ON”position.

5. Place the ignition switch in the “ON” \fosition tounlock the steering wheel.
\bhe vehicle may be moved to the desired location.
Re\flace the removed shift lock release cover after the
o\feration.
For model with Intelligent Key system: If the battery is
discharged com\fletely, the steering wheel cannot be
unlocked. Do not move the vehicle with the steering
wheel locked.
If the selector lever cannot be moved out of the “P”
(Park) \fosition, have a RENAUL\b dealer check the
CV\b system as soon as \fossible.
WARNING:
If the selector lever cannot be moved from the
“P” (Park) position while the engine is running
and the brake pedal is depressed, the stop lights
may not work. Malfunctioning stop lights could
cause an accident injuring yourself and others.
High fluid tem\ferature \frotection mode
\bhis transmission has a high fluid tem\ferature \frotec-
tion mode. If the fluid tem\ferature becomes too high
(for exam\fle, when climbing stee\f grades in high
tem\ferature with heavy loads, such as when towing a
trailer) , engine \fower and, under some conditions,
vehicle s\feed will be decreased automatically to
reduce the chance of transmission damage. Vehicle
s\feed can be controlled with the accelerator \fedal,
but engine and vehicle s\feed may be limited.
Fail-safe
When the fail-safe o\feration occurs, the CV\b will not
be shifted to the selected driving \fosition.
If the vehicle is driven under extreme conditions,
such as excessive wheel spinning and subse-
quent hard braking, the fail-safe system may be
activated. This will occur even if all electrical
circuits are functioning properly. In this case,
place the ignition switch in the “OFF”position
and wait for 10 seconds. Then turn the ignition
switch back to the “ON”position. The vehicle
should return to its normal operating condition.
If it does not return to its normal operating
condition, have a RENAULT dealer check the
transmission and repair it if necessary.
WARNING:
When the fail-safe operation occurs, vehicle
speed may be gradually reduced. The reduced
speed may be lower than other traffic, which
could increase the chance of a collision. Be
especially careful when driving. If necessary, pull
to the side of the road at a safe place and allow
the transmission to return to normal operation,
or have it repaired if necessary.
DRIVING WI\bH MANUAL \bRANSMISSION
(M\b)
WARNING:
. Do not downshift abruptly on slippery roads.
This may cause a loss of vehicle control.
. Do not over-rev the engine when shifting to
a lower gear. This may cause a loss of
vehicle control or engine damage.
CAUTION:
.Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal
while driving. This may damage the clutch
system.
. Fully depress the clutch pedal before shift-
ing to help prevent transmission damage.
. Stop the vehicle completely before shifting
into the “R” (Reverse) position.
. When the vehicle is stopped for a period of
time, for example waiting at stoplights, shift
to the “N” (Neutral) position and release the
clutch pedal with the foot brake pedal
depressed.
. Do not shift to the "N" (Neutral) position
while driving. Doing so may result in an
accident due to loss of engine braking.

(approximately 2km/h or more) , depress the

Use this system while waiting at stoplight, etc. When
the vehicle is stoppe\b for long perio\bs of time, turn off
the engine.
When the engine hoo\b is opene\b with I\bling Stop
System on, the engine will be in the normal stoppe\b
state with the buzzer soun\bing. In this case, restart the
engine with the ignition switch.
When the \briver’s \boor is opene\b with I\bling Stop
System on, I\bling Stop System continues to be
activate\b although the buzzer soun\bs an\b the I\bling
Stop System in\bicator light blinks.
OPERATING IDLING STOP SYSTEM
NOTE:
. The engine stops automatically when the
brake pedal is depressed with the selector
lever in the "D" (Drive) position.
. When the brake pedal is released, the
engine restarts automatically.
. When the Idling Stop System is activated,
the Idling Stop System indicator light illu-
minates in the meter. .
The buzzer sounds and the indicator light
appears in the meter, indicating the condi-
tion of the Idling Stop System. For more
details, see “Stop/Start System indicator
light (if equipped for Europe)/Idling Stop
System indicator light (if equipped for Thai-
land)” (P.2-18) or “Idling Stop System remin-
der buzzer (if equipped for Thailand)” (P.2-
19) .
. The accumulated time of Idling Stop System
and the current saved fuel consumption by
Idling Stop System can be checked using the
drive computer, see “Accumulated time and
current saved fuel consumption (ml (mili-
liter)) by Idling Stop System (if equipped for
Thailand)” (P.2-27) .

The Stop/Start System is designed to prevent
unne\fessary fuel \fonsumption, e\bhaust emissions,
and noise during a journey:
.When the vehi\fle \fomes to rest the engine is
automati\fally stopped.
. The engine is then automati\fally restarted before
you are ready to drive away.
CAUTION:
At the end of the journey the engine must be
stopped and ignition switch be turned off. Lock
the vehicle as normal. Turning the ignition OFF
will shut down all electrical systems. Failure to
do this may result in a flat battery.
NORMAL OPERATION
The Stop/Start System stops the engine and will
automati\fally restart the engine. The Stop/Start
indi\fator light is shown in the meter.
The Stop/Start System will automati\fally stop
the engine when all the following \fonditions
are valid.
For MT model
.The shift lever is in Neutral position.
. The \flut\fh pedal is fully released.
. The vehi\fle speed is below about 2 km/h (1
MPH) .
. The driver’s seat belt is fastened.
. The Intelligent Key is in the vehi\fle.
. The driver’s door is \flosed.
For CVT model
. The sele\ftor lever is in the "D" (Drive) or "N"
(Neutral) position. .
The brake pedal is depressed.
. The vehi\fle is stopped.
. The driver’s seat belt is fastened.
. The driver’s door is \flosed.
NOTE:
The following conditions must also be satisfied
before the engine is automatically stopped. If
the engine does not stop this does not indicate a
malfunction in the system:
. The engine coolant temperature is at normal
operating levels.
. The vehicle has driven some distance since
engine start.
. The battery voltage and temperature are
within normal levels.
. The hood is closed.
. The steering wheel is not being turned.
. The system is not in front defogger mode.
(automatic air conditioner)
. The mode dial is not in front defogger mode.
(manual air conditioner)
. The rear window defogger is not operated.
NOTE:
The engine will not restart if the brake pedal is
released while the Stop/Start System is acti-
vated under the following condition:
. The selector lever is in the "P" (Park) position
(for CVT model) .
When the Stop/Start System indi\fator light is
displayed the engine starts running automa-
ti\fally under at least one of the following
\fonditions.
.The \flut\fh pedal is depressed (for MT model) .
. The brake pedal is released with the sele\ftor lever
in the "D"(Drive) or "N"(Neutral) position (for CVT
model) .
. The sele\ftor lever is pla\fed in the "L"(Low) ,
"D"(Drive) or "R"(Reverse) position from the "N"
or "P" position (for CVT model) .
. The driver’s seat belt is unfastened, or the driver’s
door is open (for CVT model) .
. The brake pedal is repeatedly pressed (to maintain
vehi\fle braking performan\fe) .
. The brake pedal is strongly depressed and then
released with the sele\ftor lever in the "P" (Park)
position, resulting in de\freased va\fuum pressure
of the brake booster (for CVT model) .
. The battery voltage be\fomes low (due to ele\ftri\fal
load from other vehi\fle systems like headlights,
heaters, et\f., or au\biliary devi\fes \fonne\fted to the
12 volt so\fket inside the vehi\fle) .
. The vehi\fle speed is above about 2 km/h (1
MPH) .
. The system is in front defogger mode. (automati\f
air \fonditioner)
. The mode dial is in front defogger mode. (manual
air \fonditioner)
. The rear window defogger is operated.
NOTE:
The following conditions will prevent the Stop/
Start System from automatically restarting the
engine. Starting the engine by the ignition
switch is then necessary:

WARNING:
.The VDC system is designed to help improve
driving stability but does not prevent acci-
dents due to abrupt steering operation at
high speeds or due to careless or dangerous
driving techniques. Reduce vehicle speed
and be especially careful when driving and
cornering on slippery surfaces and always
drive carefully.
. Do not modify the vehicle’s suspension. If
suspension parts such as shock absorbers,
struts, springs, stabilizer bars, bushings and
wheels are not RENAULT-approved or are
extremely deteriorated, the VDC system may
not operate properly. This could adversely
affect vehicle handling performance, and the
“VDC OFF” indicator or “SLIP”indicator or
both indicator lights may illuminate.
. If brake related parts such as brake pads,
rotors and calipers are not standard equip-
ment or are extremely deteriorated, the
“VDC OFF” indicator or “SLIP”indicator or
both indicator lights may illuminate.
. If engine related parts such as a muffler are
not standard equipment or are extremely
deteriorated, the “VDC OFF” indicator or
“ SLIP ”indicator or both indicator lights
may illuminate.
. When driving on extremely inclined surfaces
such as higher banked corners, the VDC
system may not operate properly and the
“VDC OFF” indicator or “SLIP”indicator or
both indicator lights may illuminate. Do not
drive on these types of roads. .
When driving on unstable surfaces such as a
turntable, ferry, elevator or ramp, the “VDC
OFF” indicator or “SLIP”indicator or both
indicator lights may illuminate. This is not a
malfunction. Restart the engine after driving
onto a stable surface.
. If wheels or tires other than those recom-
mended are used, the VDC system may not
operate properly and “VDC OFF”indicator or
“SLIP” indicator or both indicator lights may
illuminate.
. The VDC system is not a substitute for winter
tires or tire chains on a snowcovered road.
When accelerating or \friving on slipper\b surfaces, the
tires ma\b spin or sli\fe. With the Vehicle D\bnamic
Control (VDC) s\bstem, sensors \fetect these move-
ments an\f control the braking an\f engine output to
help improve vehicle stabilit\b.
. When the VDC s\bstem is operating, the “SLIP”
in\ficator in the instrument panel blinks.
. If the “SLIP” in\ficator blinks, the roa\f con\fitions
are slipper\b. Be sure to a\fjust \bour spee\f an\f
\friving to these con\fitions. Be sure to \frive
carefull\b. (See “Slip in\ficator light” (P.2-17)
an\f“Vehicle D\bnamic Control (VDC) off in\ficator
light” (P.2-18) .)
. In\ficator light
If a malfunction occurs in the s\bstem, the “SLIP”
an\f “VDC OFF” in\ficator lights illuminate in the
instrument panel. As long as these in\ficators are
illuminate\f, the VDC s\bstem function is cancele\f.
The VDC s\bstem uses a Brake Limite\f Slip Differential
(BLSD) function to improve vehicle traction. The BLSD
s\bstem works when one of the \friving wheels is
spinning on a slipper\b surface. The BLSD s\bstem
brakes the spinning wheel, which \fistributes the \friving power to the other \frive wheel. If the vehicle
is operate\f with the VDC OFF switch pushe\f an\f the
VDC s\bstem turne\f off, all VDC s\bstems will be turne\f
off. The BLSD s\bstem will still operate with the VDC
s\bstem off. If the BLSD s\bstem is activate\f, the “SLIP”
in\ficator light will blink an\f \bou ma\b hear a clunk noise
an\f/or feel a pulsation in the foot brake pe\fal. This is
normal an\f is not an in\fication of a malfunction. While
the VDC s\bstem is operating, \bou ma\b feel a pulsation
in the foot brake pe\fal an\f hear a noise or feel a
vibration from un\fer the hoo\f. This is normal an\f
in\ficates that the VDC s\bstem is working properl\b.
The VDC s\bstem computer has a built-in \fiagnostic
feature that tests the s\bstem each time \bou start the
engine an\f move the vehicle at a low spee\f forwar\f or
backwar\f. When the self-test occurs, \bou ma\b hear a
“clunk” noise an\f/or feel a pulsation in the foot brake
pe\fal. This is normal an\f is not an in\fication of a
malfunction.
VEHICLE DYNAMIC CONTROL (VDC) OFF
SWITCH

The vehicle shoul\f be \friven with the Vehicle D\bnamic
Control (VDC) s\bstem ON for most \friving con\fitions.
When the vehicle is stuck in mu\f or snow, the VDC

system reduces the engine output to reduce wheel
spin. The engine speed will \fe reduced even if the
accelerator is depressed to the floor. \bf maximum
engine power is needed to free a stuck vehicle, turn
the VDC system off.
To turn off the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system,
push the VDC OFF switch. The
indicator light will
illuminate on.
Push the VDC OFF switch again or restart the engine
to turn ON the system.
WARNING:
. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) sys-
tem is designed to help improve driving
stability but does not prevent accidents due
to abrupt steering operation at high speeds
or due to careless or dangerous driving
techniques. Reduce vehicle speed and be
especially careful when driving and corner-
ing on slippery surfaces and always drive
carefully.
. If engine related parts such as a muffler are
not standard equipment or the “ESP OFF”
indicator or “SLIP”indicator or both indica-
tor lights may illuminate.

driving to these conditions. Be sure to drive
carefully. (See “Slip indicator light” (P.2-17) and
“Electronic Sta\fility Program (ESP) off indicator
light” (P.2-16) .)
. \bndicator light
\bf a malfunction occurs in the system, the “SL\bP”
indicator lights illuminate in the instrument
panel. As long as these indicators are illuminated,
the ESP system function is canceled.
The ESP system uses a Brake Limited Slip Differential
(BLSD) function to improve vehicle traction. The BLSD
system works when one of the driving wheels is
spinning on a slippery surface. The BLSD system
\frakes the spinning wheel, which distri\futes the
driving power to the other drive wheel. \bf the vehicle
is operated with the ESP system turned off, all ESP
system functions will \fe turned off.
The BLSD system and ABS will still operate with the
ESP system off. \bf the BLSD system is activated, the
“SL\bP” indicator light will \flink and you may hear a

If the “S\bSTEM ERROR” display appears and/or the
ON indicator light on the parking space measurement
switch blinks, have the system checked by a RENAULT
dealer.\bour vehicle was designed to be used to carry
passengers and luggage. RENAULT does not recom-
mend trailer towing, because it places additional loads
on your vehicle’s engine, drivetrain, steering, braking,
and other systems.
CAUTION:
Vehicle damage resulting from towing a trailer is
not covered by the warranty.
WARNING:
.
If the engine is not running or is turned off
while driving, the power assist for the
steering will not work. The steering will be
harder to operate.
. When the electric power steering warning
light illuminates with the engine running, the
power assist for the steering will cease
operation. You will still have control of the
vehicle but the steering will be harder to
operate.
The electric power steering system is designed to
provide power assist while driving to operate the
steering wheel with light force.
When the steering wheel is operated repeatedly or
continuously while parking or driving at a very low
speed, the power assist for the steering wheel will be
reduced. This is to prevent overheating of the electric
power steering system and protect it from getting
damaged. While the power assist is reduced, steering
wheel operation will become heavy. When the
temperature of the electric power steering system
goes down, the power assist level will return to normal.
Avoid repeating such steering wheel operations that
could cause the electric power steering system to
overheat.
\bou may hear a fricative sound when the steering
wheel is operated quickly. However, this is not a
malfunction.
If the electric power steering warning light
illuminates while the engine is running, it may indicate
the electric power steering system is not functioning
properly and may need servicing. Have the electric
power steering system checked by a RENAULT dealer.

control of the vehicle\b However, greater steering effort
is needed, especially in sharp t\frns and at low speeds\bThe brake system has two separate hydra\flic circ\fits\b If
one circ\fit malf\fnctions, yo\f will still have braking
ability at two wheels\b
BRAKE PRECAUTIONS
Vac\f\fm assisted brakes
The brake booster aids braking by \fsing engine
vac\f\fm\b If the engine stops, yo\f can stop the vehicle
by depressing the foot brake pedal\b However, greater
foot press\fre on the foot brake pedal will be req\fired
to stop the vehicle\b The stopping distance will be
longer\b
If the engine is not r\fnning or is t\frned off while driving,
the power assisted brakes will not f\fnction\b Braking
will be harder\b
WARNING:
Do not coast with the engine stopped.
When the brake pedal is depressed slowly and firmly,
yo\f may hear a clicking noise and feel a slight
p\flsation\b This is normal and indicates that the Brake
Assist System is operating\b
Using brakes
Avoid resting yo\fr foot on the foot brake pedal while
driving\b This will overheat the brakes, wear o\ft the
brake linings/pads faster, and increase f\fel cons\fmp-
tion\b
To help red\fce brake wear and to prevent the brakes
from overheating, red\fce speed and downshift to a
lower gear before going down a slope or long grade\b
Overheated brakes may red\fce braking performance
and co\fld res\flt in loss of vehicle control\b
While driving on a slippery s\frface, be caref\fl when
braking, accelerating or downshifting\b Abr\fpt brakingor acceleration co\fld ca\fse the wheels to skid and
res\flt in an accident\b
Wet brakes
When the vehicle is washed or driven thro\fgh water,
the brakes may get wet\b As a res\flt, yo\fr braking
distance will be longer and the vehicle may p\fll to one
side d\fring braking\b
To dry the brakes, drive the vehicle at a safe speed
while lightly depressing the foot brake pedal to heat \fp
the brakes\b Do this \fntil the brakes ret\frn to normal\b
Avoid driving the vehicle at high speeds \fntil the
brakes f\fnction correctly\b
Driving \fphill
When starting on a steep grade, it is sometimes
diffic\flt to operate both the brake and cl\ftch (for
Man\fal Transmission model) \b Apply the parking brake
to hold the vehicle\b Do not slip the cl\ftch\b When ready
to start, slowly release the parking brake while
depressing the accelerator pedal and releasing the
cl\ftch pedal\b
Driving downhill
The engine braking action is effective for controlling
the vehicle while descending hills\b For Man\fal Trans-
mission (MT) model, the shift lever sho\fld be placed in
the lower speed position prior to descending\b For
A\ftomatic Transmission (AT) model, the “1” or “2”
position sho\fld be selected\b For Contin\fo\fsly Variable
Transmission (CVT) model, the “L” position sho\fld be
selected\b

NORMAL OPERATION
The ABS o\ferate\b at \b\feed\b above 5 to 10 km/h (3 to
6 MPH) . The \b\feed varie\b according to road condi-
tion\b.
When the ABS \ben\be\b that one or more wheel\b are
clo\be to locking u\f, the actuator ra\fidly a\f\flie\b and
relea\be\b hydraulic \fre\b\bure. Thi\b action i\b \bimilar to
\fum\fing the brake\b very quickly. You may feel a
\ful\bation in the brake \fedal and hear a noi\be from
under the hood or feel a vibration from the actuator
when it i\b o\ferating. Thi\b i\b normal and indicate\b that
the ABS i\b o\ferating \fro\ferly. However, the \ful\bation
may indicate that road condition\b are hazardou\b and
extra care i\b required while driving.When leaving your vehicle unoccu\fied:

Alway\b take the key with you - even when leaving
the vehicle in your own garage.
. Clo\be all window\b com\fletely and lock all door\b.
. Alway\b \fark your vehicle where it can be \been.
Park in a well lit area during the night.

a \bhort \feriod.
. Never leave children or \fet\b in the vehicle
unattended.
. Never leave valuable\b in\bide the vehicle. Alway\b
take valuable\b with you.
. Never leave the vehicle document\b in the vehicle.
. Never leave article\b on a roof rack. Remove them
from the rack and kee\f and lock them in a \bafe
\flace \buch a\b in\bide the back door.
. Never leave the \b\fare key in the vehicle.WARNING:
.Whatever the condition, drive with caution.
Accelerate and decelerate with great care. If
accelerating or decelerating too fast, the
drive wheels will lose even more traction.
. Allow more stopping distance in cold weath-
er driving. Braking should be started sooner
than on dry pavement.
. Keep at a greater distance from the vehicle
in front of you on slippery roads.
. Wet ice (08C, 328F and freezing rain) , very
cold snow and ice can be slick and very
difficult to drive on. The vehicle will have a
lot less traction or grip under these condi-
tions. Try to avoid driving on wet ice until the
road is salted or sanded.
. Watch for slippery spots (glaring ice) . These
may appear on an otherwise clear road in
shaded areas. If a patch of ice is seen ahead,
brake before reaching it. Try not to brake
while actually on the ice, and avoid any
sudden steering maneuvers.
. Do not use cruise control on slippery roads.
. Snow can trap dangerous exhaust gas under
your vehicle. Keep snow clear of the exhaust
pipe and from around your vehicle.
