5. Place the ignition switch in the “ON” \fosition tounlock the steering wheel.
\bhe vehicle may be moved to the desired location.
Re\flace the removed shift lock release cover after the
o\feration.
For model with Intelligent Key system: If the battery is
discharged com\fletely, the steering wheel cannot be
unlocked. Do not move the vehicle with the steering
wheel locked.
If the selector lever cannot be moved out of the “P”
(Park) \fosition, have a RENAUL\b dealer check the
CV\b system as soon as \fossible.
WARNING:
If the selector lever cannot be moved from the
“P” (Park) position while the engine is running
and the brake pedal is depressed, the stop lights
may not work. Malfunctioning stop lights could
cause an accident injuring yourself and others.
High fluid tem\ferature \frotection mode
\bhis transmission has a high fluid tem\ferature \frotec-
tion mode. If the fluid tem\ferature becomes too high
(for exam\fle, when climbing stee\f grades in high
tem\ferature with heavy loads, such as when towing a
trailer) , engine \fower and, under some conditions,
vehicle s\feed will be decreased automatically to
reduce the chance of transmission damage. Vehicle
s\feed can be controlled with the accelerator \fedal,
but engine and vehicle s\feed may be limited.
Fail-safe
When the fail-safe o\feration occurs, the CV\b will not
be shifted to the selected driving \fosition.
If the vehicle is driven under extreme conditions,
such as excessive wheel spinning and subse-
quent hard braking, the fail-safe system may be
activated. This will occur even if all electrical
circuits are functioning properly. In this case,
place the ignition switch in the “OFF”position
and wait for 10 seconds. Then turn the ignition
switch back to the “ON”position. The vehicle
should return to its normal operating condition.
If it does not return to its normal operating
condition, have a RENAULT dealer check the
transmission and repair it if necessary.
WARNING:
When the fail-safe operation occurs, vehicle
speed may be gradually reduced. The reduced
speed may be lower than other traffic, which
could increase the chance of a collision. Be
especially careful when driving. If necessary, pull
to the side of the road at a safe place and allow
the transmission to return to normal operation,
or have it repaired if necessary.

WARNING:
. Do not downshift abruptly on slippery roads.
This may cause a loss of vehicle control.
. Do not over-rev the engine when shifting to
a lower gear. This may cause a loss of
vehicle control or engine damage.
CAUTION:
.Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal
while driving. This may damage the clutch
system.
. Fully depress the clutch pedal before shift-
ing to help prevent transmission damage.
. Stop the vehicle completely before shifting
into the “R” (Reverse) position.
. When the vehicle is stopped for a period of
time, for example waiting at stoplights, shift
to the “N” (Neutral) position and release the
clutch pedal with the foot brake pedal
depressed.
. Do not shift to the "N" (Neutral) position
while driving. Doing so may result in an
accident due to loss of engine braking.

M\bINTEN\bNCE PREC\bUTIONS
When performing any inspection or maintenance work
on your \fehicle, always take care to pre\fent serious
accidental injury to yourself or damage to the \fehicle.
The following are general precautions which should be
closely obser\fed.
WARNING:
.Park the vehicle on a level surface, apply the
parking brake securely and block the wheels
to prevent the vehicle from moving. Move
the selector lever to the “P”(Park) position
or the shift lever to the “N”(Neutral) position.
. Be sure the ignition switch is in the “OFF”or
“LOCK” position when performing any parts
replacement or repairs.
. Do not work under the hood while the
engine is hot. Always turn off the engine
and wait until it cools down.
. If you must work with the engine running,
keep your hands, clothing, hair and tools
away from moving fans, belts and any other
moving parts.
. It is advisable to secure or remove any loose
clothing and any jewelry, such as rings,
watches, etc. before working on your vehi-
cle.
. If you must run the engine in an enclosed
space such as a garage, be sure there is
proper ventilation for exhaust gases to
escape. .
Never get under the vehicle while it is
supported by a jack.
. Keep smoking materials, flame and sparks
away from fuel and the battery.
. Never connect or disconnect either the
battery or any transistorized component
connector while the ignition switch is in the
“ON” position.
. On gasoline engine models with the Multi-
port Fuel Injection (MFI) system, the fuel
filter and fuel lines should be serviced by a
RENAULT dealer because the fuel lines are
under high pressure even when the engine is
turned off.
. Your vehicle is equipped with an automatic
engine cooling fan. It may come on at any
time without warning, even if the ignition
switch is in the “OFF” position and the
engine is not running. To avoid injury, always
disconnect the negative battery cable before
working near the fan.
. Always wear eye protection whenever you
work on your vehicle.
. Never leave the engine or the transmission
related component harness connector dis-
connected while the ignition switch is in the
“ON” position.
. Avoid direct contact with used engine oil and
coolant. Improperly disposed engine oil,
engine coolant, and/or other vehicle fluids
can hurt the environment. Always conform to
local regulations for disposal of vehicle
fluids.
This “8. Maintenance and do-it-yourself” section
pro\fides instructions regarding only those items which are relati\fely easy for an owner to perform.
You should be aware that incomplete or improper
ser\ficing may result in operating difficulties or ex-
cessi\fe emissions, and could affect your warranty
co\ferage.
If in doubt about any servicing, have it
done by a RENAULT dealer.

system should be thoroughly checked by a REN\fULT
dealer\bWARNING:
.Use only new fluid from a sealed container.
Old, inferior, or contaminated fluid may
damage the clutch system.
. Clean the filler cap before removing.
. Clutch fluid is poisonous and should be
stored carefully in marked containers out of
the reach of children.
CAUTION:
Do not spill the clutch fluid on painted surfaces.
This will damage the paint. If clutch fluid is
spilled, wash it off with plenty of water immedi-
ately.

Check the fluid level in the reservoir\b If the fluid is
below the MIN line, add fluid up to the M\fX line\b (See
“Recommended fuel/lubricants and capacities” (P\b9-2)
for the recommended types of fluid\b)
If the fluid must be added frequently, the clutch system
should be thoroughly checked by a REN\fULT dealer\b Contact a REN\fULT dealer if checking or replacement
is required\b
CAUTION:
.
Use only fluids approved by our technical
department. Do not mix with other fluids.
. Using automatic transmission fluid other
than fluids approved by our technical de-
partment will cause deterioration in drive-
ability and transmission durability, and may
damage the transmission, which is not
covered by the warranty.
