Starting the engine - Press the
button with the key
Read and observe and on page 102 first.
The key in the vehicle cannot be verified
If the key in the vehicle cannot be verified, then engine cannot be started by
pressing a button.
One of the following messages are shown in the information cluster display. Key not detected. Owner's manual!
Key not found.
NO KEY
This can be because of the following.
› The battery in the key is almost out of charge.
› The key is malfunctioning.
› There is interference in the signal between the system and the key (strong
electromagnetic field).
Try to start the engine by pressing the knob with the key » Fig. 113.
System fault
If the following message appears on the display of the instrument cluster,
there is a system malfunction.
Keyless access system faulty.
KEYLESS ACCESS SYSTEM FAULTY
Try to start the engine by pressing the knob with the key » Fig. 113.
CAUTION
The key can only be verified if it is in the vehicle. It is therefore not always nec-
essary to know where the key is.Note■ When attempting to start, the key bit must be pointed towards the button
» Fig. 113 .■
If engine fails to start after pressing the button with the key, seek specialist
help.

The START-STOPsystem (hereinafter referred to only as system) saves fuel
and reduces harmful emissions and CO 2 discharge.
If the system determine that the engine is not needed when the vehicle stops
(e.g. at the traffic lights), it turns off the engine and starts it again when mov-
ing off.
Operation

For the system-dependent automatic engine shut-down when stopping to op-
erate, the following conditions must be met.
For vehicles with manual transmission , the shift lever is in the neutral po-
sition and the clutch pedal is not depressed.
For vehicles with automatic transmission the brake pedal is to be de-
pressed.
The driver's door is closed. 

fire hazards may arise. For this reason, it is essential to comply with the
warning instructions stated below and with the generally applicable rules
of safety. The engine compartment of your car is a hazardous area.WARNINGInstructions before beginning work in the engine compartment■Turn off the engine and remove the ignition key.■
Firmly apply the handbrake.
■
For vehicles with manual transmission the lever into the neutral position.
■
On vehicles with automatic transmission, shift the selector lever into the
P position.
■
Allow the engine to cool.
■
Never open the bonnet if you can see steam or coolant flowing out of the
engine compartment – there is a risk of scalding. Wait until the steam or
coolant has stopped escaping.
WARNINGInformation for working in the engine room■Keep all people, especially children, away from the engine compartment.■
Never touch the radiator fan while the engine is still warm. The fan might
suddenly start running!
■
Do not touch any hot engine parts – there is a risk of burns.
WARNINGInformation for working in the engine compartment with the engine run-
ning■
Pay particular attention to moving engine parts, e.g. V-ribbed belt, gener-
ator, radiator fan - danger to life!
■
Never touch the electric wiring on the ignition system.
■
Avoid short circuits in the electrical system, particularly on the vehicle's
battery.
■
Always make sure that no jewellery, loose clothing or long hair can get
caught in rotating engine parts – there is a risk of death. Always remove
any jewellery, tie back long hair and wear tight fitting clothing before com-
pleting any work.
WARNINGInformation for working on the fuel system or the electrical system■Always disconnect the vehicle battery from the electrical system.■
Do not smoke.
■
Never work near open flames.
■
Always have a functioning fire extinguisher nearby.
WARNING■ Read the information and warning instructions on the fluid containers.■Keep the working fluids in sealed original containers and safe from peo-
ple who are not completely independent, e.g. children.■
Never spill operating fluids over the hot engine - risk of fire.
■
If you wish to work under the vehicle, you must secure the vehicle against
rolling away and support it with suitable axle stands: the car jack is not suf-
ficient for this – there is a risk of injury.
CAUTION
Always top up using the correct specification of fluids. This may result in major
operating problems and also vehicle damage!
For the sake of the environment
In view of the requirements for the environmentally friendly disposal of fluids and the special tools and knowledge required for such work, we recommend
that fluids be changed by a specialist garage.
Note
■ If there is anything you are not sure about concerning fluids, please consult a
specialist garage.■
Fluids with the proper specifications can be purchased from the ŠKODA Origi-
nal Accessories or from the ŠKODA Genuine Parts ranges.

Removing/installing the towing eye›
Manually screw the towing eye as far as it will go in the direction of the ar-

For tightening purposes, we recommend, for example, using the wheel
wrench, towing eye from another vehicle or a similar object that can be pushed through the eye.

Unscrew the towing eye against the direction of the arrow

WARNINGThe towing eye must always be screwed in fully and firmly tightened, oth-
erwise the towing eye can tear when towing in or tow-starting.

Vehicles with a tow hitch
Read and observe

The removable towing ball may be fitted and used for towing on vehicles with
a factory fitted tow hitch » page 127, Hitch .
Towing the vehicle using the towing device is a viable alternative solution to
using the towing eye.
CAUTIONThe detachable ball rod and/or the vehicle can be damaged if an unsuitable
tow bar is used.

CAUTION
■ The replacement battery must have the same specification as the original
battery.■
We recommend having faulty rechargeable batteries replaced by a ŠKODA
service partner.
■
Pay attention to the correct polarity when changing the battery.
For the sake of the environment
Dispose of the used battery in accordance with national legal provisions.

Open the battery in the direction of the arrow

Remove the discharged battery in the direction of arrow

Insert the new battery.

and press it down until it clicks audibly into place.
The key has to be synchronised if the vehicle cannot be unlocked or locked
with the remote control key after replacing the battery » page 178.
Note
Replacing the battery in the key a glued decorative cover requires the cover to
be destroyed. A replacement cover can be purchased from a ŠKODA Partner.
Synchronising the remote control
Read and observe
on page 177 first.
If the vehicle does not unlock when the remote control is pressed, the key maynot be synchronised. This can occur when the buttons on the remote control
key are actuated a number of times outside of the operative range of the
equipment or the battery in the remote control key has been replaced.
Synchronise the key as follows.
›
Press any button on the remote control key.
›
Unlock the door with the key in the lock cylinder within 1 minute of pressing the button.

The driver's door can be unlocked or locked in an emergency.
›
Pull on the door handle and hold it pulled.
›
Insert the vehicle key into the slot on the bottom of the cover » Fig. 184.
›
Open the cover in the direction of the arrow.
›
Release the door handle.
›
For vehicles with LHD insert the remote control key with the buttons facing
up into the lock cylinder and unlock or lock the vehicle.
›
For vehicles with RHD insert the remote control key directed with buttons
down into the lock cylinder and unlock or lock the vehicle.
›
Pull on the door handle and hold it pulled.
›
Replace the cap in its original position.
CAUTION
Make sure you do not damage the paint when performing an emergency lock-
