CLOSE TO THE SRS AIRBAG. Always use the child safety locks whenever a child rides in the
rear seat. Serious injury could result if a child accidentallyopened the door and fell out. Refer to the “Door locks ” section in
chapter 2. Always lock the passenger ’s windows using the lock switch
when children are riding in the vehicle. Failure to follow this pro-cedure could result in injury to a child operating the power win-
dow. Refer to the “Power windows ” section in chapter 2.
Never leave unattended children in the vehicle. They could ac-
cidentally injure themselves or others through inadvertent opera-
tion of the vehicle. Also, on hot or sunny days, temperature in a
closed vehicle could quickly become high enough to cause se-vere or possibly fatal injuries to them.
Carefully read the sections “Child restraint systems ”, “SRS airbag ”, and
“Seatbelts” in chapter 1 of this owner ’s manual for instructions and pre-
cautions concerning the child restraint system, seatbelt system and SRSairbag system. ENGINE EXHAUST GAS (CARBON MONOXIDE)
WARNING
Never inhale engine exhaust gas. Engine exhaust gas contains
carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas which is danger- ous, or even lethal, if inhaled. Always properly maintain the engine exhaust system to pre-
vent engine exhaust gas from entering the vehicle. Never run the engine in a closed space, such as a garage, ex-
cept for the brief time needed to drive the vehicle in or out of it. Avoid remaining in a parked vehicle for a lengthy time while
the engine is running. If that is unavoidable, then use the ventila-tion fan to force fresh air into the vehicle. Always keep the front ventilator inlet grille free from snow,
leaves or other obstructions to ensure that the ventilation system
always works properly.

To avoid the possibility of serious injury or death, passengers
must never be allowed to sit on the rear center console while the
vehicle is in motion. The rear seat of this vehicle is designed forno more than two passengers and is equipped with only two seat-belts. Make sure that the rear seatback is securely locked. When it is
securely locked, the red marking on the lock is no longer visible.If it is not locked, the seatback may move forward when the ve-hicle is operated. Secure skis and other lengthy items properly to prevent them
from being thrown around inside the vehicle and causing serious
injury during a sudden stop, a sudden steering or a rapid accel-eration.

Pull the antenna out to extend it to its full length. FM reception
Although FM is normally static free, reception can be affected by the
surrounding area, atmospheric conditions, station strength and trans-
mitter distance. Buildings or other obstructions may cause momentary
static, flutter or station interference. If reception continues to be unsat-
isfactory, switch to a stronger station.
Installation of accessories
Always consult your SUBARU dealer before installing a citizen band ra- dio or other transmitting device in your vehicle. Such devices may cause
the electronic control system to malfunction if they are incorrectly
installed or if they are not suited for the vehicle.

Bed cover (if equipped)
The bed cover is designed to cover the cargo area of the bed. The bed
cover is water resistant, but not waterproof.
CAUTION
Do not place cargo on top of the bed cover.
Do not use the hard bed cover section as a step.
Do not use the bed cover to secure cargo.
To avoid damage, clean the bed cover with only soap, water
and a soft brush. Remove the soft portion of the bed cover before taking the ve-
hicle through a car wash.

To secure the soft portion of the bed cover to the bed, simply start
from either side of the vehicle and place the plastic strip under the
rail. Slide your hand down the side of the vehicle pushing the plastic
strip under the rail as you go. Continue this around the entire length of
the bed. Fasten both closeout wraps with Velcro around the rear
chrome bars so that they are secure. Your cover should be tight and
ready to conceal items in the bed from view.

Avoid carrying unnecessary luggage or cargo.

always works properly. If at any time you suspect that exhaust fumes are entering the
vehicle, have the problem checked and corrected as soon as pos-
sible. If you must drive under these conditions, drive only with allwindows fully open.
NOTE Due to the expansion and contraction of the metals used in the
manufacture of the exhaust system, you may hear a crackling soundcoming from the exhaust system for a short time after the enginehas been shut off. This sound is normal.

Secure lengthy items properly to prevent them from shooting
forward and causing serious injury during a sudden stop. Never exceed the maximum load limit. If you do, some parts on
your vehicle can break, or it can change the way your vehicle
handles. This could result in loss of control and cause personal
injury. Also, overloading can shorten the life of your vehicle. Cargo should be evenly distributed over the cargo bed. Keep
heavier items as low and far forward as possible. Loading the
vehicle improperly can deteriorate handling capability and con-tribute to loss of vehicle control. Be sure the cargo is secured properly. Unsecured cargo in the
cargo bed can be thrown around during sudden braking, in asharp turn or during rapid acceleration, which could create a dan-gerous road hazard.
CAUTION
Do not carry spray cans, containers with flammable or corrosiveliquids or any other dangerous items inside the passengercompartment.
NOTE
For better fuel economy, do not carry unneeded cargo.

the passing of large trucks or buses. If swaying occurs, firmly grip the
steering wheel and slow down immediately but gradually.When passing other vehicles, considerable distance is required
because of the added weight and length caused by attaching the
trailer to your vehicle. Backing up with a trailer is difficult and takes practice. When back-
ing up with a trailer, never accelerate or steer rapidly. When turning
back, grip the bottom of the steering wheel with one hand and turn it
to the left for a left turn, and turn it to the right for a right turn.

If the ABS warning light illuminates while the vehicle is in motion,
stop towing the trailer and have repairs performed immediately by the
nearest SUBARU dealer. n Driving on grades
Before going down a steep hill, slow down and shift into lower gear
(if necessary, use 1st gear) in order to utilize the engine braking effect
and prevent overheating of your vehicle ’s brakes. Do not make sud-
den downshifts. When driving uphill in hot weather, the air conditioner may turn off
automatically to protect the engine from overheating. When driving uphill in hot weather, pay attention to the water tem-
perature gauge pointer (for all vehicles) and AT OIL TEMP warning
light (for AT vehicles) since the engine and transmission are relatively
prone to overheating under these conditions. If the water temperature
