WARNING
Always use the child safety lock whenever a child rides in the rear seat. Serious injury could result if a child accidentallyopened the door and fell out.
Eac h rear d oor has a c hild safety loc k that p revent s the d oors from b eing
op ened even if the insid e d oor hand le is p ulled .
When the c hild safety loc k lever is in the loc k p os ition, the d oor c annot
b e op ened from insid e reg ard less of the p osition of the inner d oor hand le
loc k lever. The d oor c an only b e op ened from the ou tsid e.

Press the “LOCK ” b utton to loc k all d oors and the rear g ate. The p a rk-
ing lig hts will flash one time. n Unlocking the doors
To unloc k the d river ’s d oor only, p ress and release the “UNLOCK ” b ut-
ton.
To unloc k all d oors and the rear g ate, p ress and ho ld the “UNLOCK ”
b utton.
The p arking lig hts will flash one time.
The vehic le ’s interior (c ourtesy) lig ht will illuminate for 60 sec ond s or
until vehic le is started . NOTE
1. Parking lights will flash when the vehicle ’s battery is discon-
nected and reconnected.
To stop lights from flashing, either: Press remote transmitter “UNLOCK” button once.
Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position and press pro-
gramming button for one second (see location below).
2. The vehicle interior (courtesy) light and door open warninglight (DOOR AJAR indicator) will illuminate for 60 seconds when
the ignition is turned off, or until the doors are locked with the

n Shock Sensor
The shoc k sensor d etec ts any imp ac t to the vehic le. Lig ht imp ac t will
c ause the siren to emit a warning “c hirp ”; heavier b lows will trig g er
the alarm. (Shoc k sensor sensitivity has b een p rese t, b ut may b e
ad justed b y your SUBARU d ealer.) n Personal protection (Panic) feature
Pressing b oth b uttons on the remote transmitter ac t ivates the Panic
feature, sound ing the siren and flashing the vehic l e’s p arking lig hts.
n Interior status indicator
The b rig ht-red warning lig ht p rovid es a visual d ete rrent to a would -b e
thief.n Emergency override button
Ensures that you will b e ab le to d isarm your alarm system and start
your vehic le if your remote transmitter is lost or b roken. See “The
emerg enc y overrid e/p rog ramming b utton ” Sec tion.

The Status Ind ic ator is a hig h intensity warning li g ht, loc ated on the
d ash to the left of the steering wheel. The Status Ind ic ator d isp lays a
visual ind ic ation of the sec urity system ’s status while c reating a p ow-
erful theft d eterrent. LED status Off: System is d isarmed .
Double-Flash: System is in valet mod e.
Steady Flash: System is armed .
Fast Flash: System has b een trig g ered .
On: System is in p re-arm state (and will arm when all d oors are
c losed ). n The valet button (built into the status indicator)
The Valet Button is used to eng ag e Valet Mode (see “Valet mod e ”
Sec tion). In Valet Mod e, the sec urity system will n ot arm, throug h the
siren will c hirp and keyless entry features will fu nc tion when the sec u-
rity system is d isarmed .

WARNING
When operating power windows, be extremely careful to pre-
vent anyone ’s fingers, arms or head from being caught in the
window. Always lock the passengers ’ windows using the lock switch
when children are riding in the vehicle. Before leaving the vehicle, always remove the key from the
ignition switch for safety and never allow an unattended child toremain in the vehicle. Failure to follow this procedure could result
in injury to a child operating the power window.
The p ower wind ows op erate only when the ig nition sw itc h is in the “ON ”
p osition.

To prevent dangerous exhaust gas from entering the vehicle, al- ways keep the rear gate closed while driving.

To unloc k the rear g ate, insert the key in the keyh ole and turn it c loc k-
wise. To loc k the rear g ate, insert the key in the keyhole and turn it c oun-
terc loc kwise. If your vehic le is eq uip p ed with p owe r d oor loc king
switc hes, the rear g ate c an also b e loc ked and unlo c ked throug h use of
the p ower d oor loc king switc hes. Refer to “Power d oor loc king switc hes ”
sec tion in this c hap ter.
To op en the rear g ate, first unloc k the rear g ate l oc k then p ull the outsid e
hand le up . To c lose the rear g ate, lower it slowly and p ush d own firmly
until the latc h eng ag es.

1-26Fuel filler door and cap
WARNING
Gasoline vapor is highly flammable. Before refueling, always
first stop the engine and make sure that there are no lighted ciga- rettes, open flames or electrical sparks in the adjacent area. When opening the cap, do not remove the cap quickly. Fuel
may be under pressure and spray out of the fuel filler neck espe-
cially in hot weather, which may cause injury.
CAUTION
Never add any cleaning agents to the fuel tank. The addition of a
cleaning agent may cause damage to the fuel system.
For c hoosing the rig ht fuel for your SUBARU, refer to the “Fuel req uire-
ments ” sec tion (loc ated in c hap ter 7).
To open and close the fuel filler door

Fuel filler cap CAUTION
Make sure that the cap is tightened until it clicks to prevent
fuel spillage in the event of an accident. Always use a genuine SUBARU fuel filler cap. If you use the
wrong cap, it may not fit or have proper venting, and your fueltank and emission control system might be damaged.

To take off the fuel filler c ap , turn it slowly c ou nterc loc kwise and re-
move the c ap .
To p ut the c ap b ac k on, turn it c loc kwise until you hear a c lic king
noise.
Be c ertain not to c atc h the c ap tether und er the c a p while tig htening .
NOTE If the fuel filler cap is not tightened until it clicks or if the tether is caught under the cap, the CHECK ENGINE warning light maycome on. Refer to the “Warning and indicator lights ” section
located in chapter 3. Refueling
After the fuel filler nozzle has automatic ally stop p ed , d o not ad d more
fuel.
If you sp ill any fuel on the p ainted surfac e, rinse it off immed iately.
Otherwise, the p ainted surfac e c ould b e d amag ed . Su c h d amag e is
not c overed und er the SUBARU Limited Warranty.
