„System servicing
NOTE
If the front part of the vehicle is dam-
aged in an accident to the extent that
the seatbelt pretensioner does not op-
erate, contact your SUBARU dealer as
soon as possible. „ Precautions against vehicle
modification
Always consult your SUBARU dealer if
you want to install any accessory parts to
your vehicle.
If the warning light exhibits any of
the following conditions, there may
be a malfunction in the seatbelt pre-
tensioners and/or SRS airbag sys-
tem. Immediately take your vehicle
to your nearest SUBARU dealer to
have the system checked. Unless
checked and properly repaired, the
seatbelt pretensioners and/or SRS
airbags will not operate properly in
the event of a collision, which may
increase the risk of injury.
y Flashing or flickering of the warn-
ing light
yNo illumination of the warning
light when the ignition switch is
first turned to the “ON” position
yContinuous illumination of the
warning light
yIllumination of the warning light
while driving
y When discarding a seatbelt retrac-
tor assembly or scrapping the en-
tire vehicle damaged by a colli-
sion, consult your SUBARU deal-
er.
yTampering with or disconnecting
the system’s wiring could result in
accidental activation of the seat-
belt pretensioner and/or SRS air-
bag or could make the system in-
operative, which may result in se-
rious injury. The wiring harnesses
of the seatbelt pretensioner and
SRS airbag systems are covered
with yellow insulation and the
connectors of the system are yel-
low for easy identification. Do not
use electrical test equipment on
any circuit related to the seatbelt
pretensioner and SRS airbag sys-
tems. For required servicing of
the seatbelt pretensioner, see
your nearest SUBARU dealer.
The front sub sensors are located
near the bottom of the radiator and
the side airbag sensor is located in-
side each center pillar and the SRS
airbag control module including the
impact sensors is located under the
center console. If you need service
or repair in those areas or near the
front seatbelt retractors, we recom-
mend that you have an authorized
SUBARU dealer perform the work.

yWhen a heavy article is placed on the
seat.
When the front passenger’s seat is occu-
pied by an adult, observe the following
precautions. Failure to do so may lessen
the load on the front passenger’s seat, de-
activating the front passenger’s SRS fron-
tal airbag despite the fact that the seat is
occupied by an adult.y Do not allow the rear seat occupant to
lift the front passenger’s seat cushion us-
ing his/her feet. y Do not place any article under the front
passenger’s seat, or squeeze any article
from behind and under the seat. This may
lift the seat cushion. y Do not squeeze any article between the
front passenger’s seat and side trim/pillar,
door or center console box. This may lift
the seat cushion. V If the passenger’s frontal airbag
OFF indicator illuminates and the
ON indicator extinguishes even
when the front passenger’s seat is
occupied by an adult
This can be caused by the adult incorrect-
ly sitting in the front passenger’s seat.
Turn the ignition switch to the “OFF” posi-
tion. Ask the front passenger to set the
seatback to the upright position, sit up
straight in the center of the seat cushion, correctly fasten the seatbelt, position his/
her legs out forward, and adjust the seat
to the rearmost position. Turn the ignition
switch to the “ON” position. If the OFF in-
dicator remains illuminated while the ON
indicator remains extinguished, take the
following actions. y
Turn the ignition switch to the “OFF” po-
sition. y Ensure that there are no articles, books,
shoes or other objects trapped under the
seat, at the rear of the seat, or on the side
of the seat. y Ensure that the backward-forward posi-
tion and seatback of front passenger’s
seat are locked into place securely by
moving the seat back and forth. (Models
equipped with manual seats only) y Next, turn the ignition switch to the “ON”
position and wait 6 seconds to allow the
system to complete self-checking. Follow-
ing the system check, both indicators ex-
tinguish for 2 seconds. Now, the ON indi-
cator should illuminate while the OFF indi-
cator remains extinguished.
If the OFF indicator still illuminates while
the ON indicator remains extinguished,
ask the occupant to move to the rear seat
and immediately contact your SUBARU
dealer for an inspection. T
Effect vehicle modifications made
for persons with disabilities may
have on Subaru advanced frontal
airbag system operation (U.S. only)
Changing or moving any parts of the front
seats, seat belts, front bumper, front side
frame, instrument panel, combination
meter, steering wheel, steering column,
tire, suspension or floor panel can affect
the operation of the Subaru advanced air-
bag system. If you have any questions,

In the event that the SRS airbag is de-
ployed, replacement of the system
should be performed only by an autho-
rized SUBARU dealer. When the com-
ponents of the SRS airbag system are
replaced, use only genuine SUBARU
parts.
To ensure their long-term reliability, the
SRS airbags must be inspected by a SUB-
ARU dealer ten years after the date of
manufacture, which is shown on the certi-
fication plate attached to the driver’s door-jamb.
NOTE
In the following cases, contact your
SUBARU dealer as soon as possible. y The front part of the vehicle was in-
volved in an accident in which only the
driver’s SRS frontal airbag or both driv-
er’s and front passenger’s SRS frontal
airbags did not deploy. y The pad section of the steering
wheel or front passenger’s frontal air-
bag cover is scratched, cracked, or
otherwise damaged.
In addition, if your vehicle is equipped
with SRS side airbags, contact your
SUBARU dealer as soon as possible in
the following cases. y Either center pillar or a nearby area
of the vehicle was involved in an acci-
dent in which the SRS side airbag did
not deploy.y The fabric or leather of either front
seatback is cut, frayed, or otherwise
damaged. „
Precautions against vehicle
modificationIf you need service or repair in areas
listed below, have an authorized
SUBARU dealer perform the work.
The SRS airbag control module, im-
pact sensors and airbag modules

To open the glove box, pull the handle. To close it, push the lid firmly upward.
To lock the glove box, insert the key and
turn it clockwise.
„ Center console
The center console box provides a stor-
age space. In addition, the top of the con-
sole can be used as an armrest and as a
rear passenger’s cup holder.
To use as armrest:
1. Tip the console top forward from its
vertical position. 2. Push the armrest part of the console
top forward to the desired position while
pulling up the knob at the front end of the
armrest and lock it in position by releasing
the knob. Adjust the position of the arm-
rest to suit your driving position. Make
sure the armrest is securely retained.
When you slide the armrest back to its
original position, pull the knob upward as
you do so.
To return the console top to the vertical
position, pull upward the knob at the front
end of the armrest while raising the con-
sole top until it emits a click.
y
Always keep the storage compart-
ment closed while driving to re-
duce the risk of injury in the event
of sudden stops or an accident.
y Do not store spray cans, contain-
ers with flammable or corrosive
liquids or any other dangerous
items in the storage compartment.

To use as rear passenger’s cup holder:
With the console top tipped toward the
rear seat, it can be used as a cup holder.
To use as storage space:
Raise the console top to the vertical posi-
tion or tip it toward the rear seat. Then, pull
up the lock button of the console box and
open the lid.
When closed, the lid can be used as a tray
for placing small items in it.
Do not step or sit on the armrest,
and do not place heavy objects on it.
The armrest could break, and you
could get hurt.

To switch from using the console
top as an armrest to using it as a
rear passenger’s cup holder, raise
the console top to the vertical po-
sition before tipping it toward the
rear seat. Otherwise the console
top may break.
y Do not place any object weighing
more than 4.4 lbs (2 kg) on the ta- ble.
y Do not have hot drinks or other
objects on the table while driving.
During hard braking or negotia-
tion of a curve, they could fall
from the table and cause a burn or
other injury.
yBefore opening the lid of the con-
sole box, raise the console top
completely to the vertical position
or tip it toward the rear seat. Oth-
erwise, the lid may be damaged
and an injury may occur.

„Overhead console
To open the console, push on the console
lid lightly and the lid will automatically
open.
„ Dashboard storage compart-
ment
To open the dashboard compartment,
push the button on the lid and the lid will
automatically open. Be sure to close the
compartment fully before driving.„ Convenience net
A net for storing small articles is provided
at the front passenger’s foot-well.

Be careful not to trap your hands
between the console top and con-
sole box when raising and tipping
the console top.
y When there is an object on the
console box lid, do not tip the con-
sole top forward. Otherwise, the
console top or lid could be dam-
aged, and an injury could occur.

A dual cup holder is built in the center con-
sole, beside the parking brake lever. „ Rear passenger’s cup holder
There are rear passenger’s cup holders at
the back of the center console as well as
on the reverse side of the console top.
To use the rear passenger’s cup holder lo-
cated at the back of the center console,
open the lid by pulling its upper edge. To use the rear passenger’s cup holder lo-
cated on the reverse side of the console
top, refer to “Center console” in the “Stor-
age compartments” part of this chapter for

Power outlet in cargo area
Accessory power outlets are provided be-
side the front pocket, in the center console
and in the cargo area. Electrical power
(12V DC) from the battery is available at
any of the outlets when the ignition switch
is in either the “ACC” or “ON” position.
You can use an in-car electrical appliance
by connecting it to an outlet.
The maximum power rating of an appli-
ance that can be connected varies among
outlets as shown in the following. Do not
use an appliance which exceeds the indi-
cated wattage for each outlet.
Outlet beside front pocket: 80W or less
Outlets in center console and cargo area:
120W or less
When using appliances connected to two or more outlets simultaneously, the total
power consumed by them must not ex-
ceed 120W.

Do not attempt to use a cigarette
lighter in the center console and
cargo area power outlets.
y Do not place any foreign objects,
especially metal ones such as
coins or aluminum foil, into the
accessory power outlet. That
could cause a short circuit. Al-
ways put the cap on the accesso-
ry power outlet when it is not in
use.
y Use only electrical appliances
which are designed for 12V DC.
The maximum power rating of an
appliance that can be connected
varies among outlets as shown in
the following. Do not use an appli-
ance which exceeds the indicated
wattage for each outlet.
Outlet beside front pocket: 80W or
less
Outlets in center console and car-
go area: 120W or less
When using appliances connect-
ed to two or more outlets simulta-
neously, the total power con-
sumed by them must not exceed
120W. Overloading the accessory
power outlet can cause a short
circuit. Do not use double adapt-
ers or more than one electrical ap-
pliance.
y If the plug on your electric appli-
ance is either too loose or too
tight for the accessory power out-
let, this can result in a poor con-
tact or cause the plug to get stuck.
Only use plugs that fit properly.
y Use of an electric appliance in the
accessory power outlet for a long
period of time while the engine is
not running can cause battery dis-
charge.
y Before driving your vehicle, make
sure that the plug and the cord on
your electrical appliance will not
interfere with your shifting gears
and operating the accelerator and
brake pedals. If they do, do not
use the electrical appliance while
driving.
