the wip er b lad e may sc ratc h the wind shield .

Checking the clutch function

1. With the eng ine id ling , c hec k that there are no a b normal noises
when the c lutc h p ed al is d ep ressed , and that shifti ng into 1st or re-
verse feels smooth.
2. Start the vehic le b y releasing the p ed al slowly t o c hec k that the en-
g ine and transmission smoothly c oup le without any s ig n of slip p ag e.

Replacement of brake pad and lining
CAUTION
If you continue to drive despite the scraping noise from the audi-
ble brake pad wear indicator, it will result in the need for costlybrake rotor repair or replacement.

The front d isc b rake has an aud ib le wear ind ic ator on the b rake p ad s.
For RS mod els, the rig ht sid e rear d isc b rake also has a aud ib le wear
ind ic ator. If the b rake p ad s wear c lose to their se rvic e limit, the wear ind i-
c ator makes a very aud ib le sc rap ing noise when the b rake p ed al is ap -
p lied .
If you hear this sc rap ing noise eac h time you ap p ly the b rake p ed al,
have the b rake p ad s servic ed b y your SUBARU d ealer as soon as p os-
sib le.
Breaking-in of new brake pads and linings
When rep lac ing the b rake p ad or lining , use only g e nuine SUBARU
p arts. After rep lac ement, the new p arts must b e b ro ken in as follows:
n Brake pad and lining
While maintaining a sp eed of 30 to 40 mp h (50 to 65 km/h), step on
the b rake p ed al lig htly. Rep eat this five or more t imes.

Parking brake lining
WARNING
A safe location and situation should be selected for break-in driv- ing.
CAUTION
Pulling the parking brake lever too forcefully may cause the rear
wheels to lock. To avoid this, be certain to pull the lever up slowly
and gently.
1. Drive the vehic le at a sp eed of ab out 22 mp h (35 km/h).
2. With the p arking b rake release b utton p ushed in, p ull the p arking
b rake lever SLOWLY and GENTLY. (Pulling with a forc e of ap p roxi-
mately 147 N [ 15 Kg , 33 lb ] .)
3. Drive the vehic le for ab out 220 yard s (200 meters ) in this c ond ition.
4. Wait 5 to 10 minutes for the p arking b rake to c oo l d own. Rep eat
this p roc ed ure.
5. Chec k the p arking b rake stroke. If the p arking b r ake stroke is out
of the sp ec ified rang e, ad just it b y turning the ad justing nut loc ated
on the p arking b rake lever.
Parking brake stroke: 7 — 8 notches / 196 N (20 kg, 44 lb.)
Parking brake stroke
Chec k the p arking b rake stroke ac c ord ing to the mai ntenanc e sc hed ule
in the “Warranty and Maintenanc e Booklet ”. When the p arking b rake is
p rop erly ad justed , b raking p ower is fully ap p lied b y p ulling the lever up
seven to eig ht notc hes g ently b ut firmly (ab out 196 N, 44 lb ., 20 kg ). If
the p arking b rake lever stroke is not within the sp ec ified rang e, have the
b rake system c hec ked and ad justed at your SUBARU d e aler.

Tires and wheels WARNING
When replacing a tire, make sure you use only the same size,
circumference, construction brand, and load range as the original tires listed on the tire placard. Using other sizes, circumferencesor construction may result in severe mechanical damage to the
drive train of your vehicle and may affect ride, handling, braking,
speedometer/odometer calibration, and clearance between thebody and tires. It also may be dangerous and lead to loss of ve-hicle control. Do not use a combination of radial, belted bias or bias tires
since it may cause dangerous handling characteristics and leadto an accident. Do not let air out of warm tires to adjust pressure. Doing so
will result in low tire pressure.
The tires should b e c hec ked freq uently for p rop er t ire p ressure, wear,
and c uts. Tire pressure
For the b est b alanc e b etween fuel ec onomy, tire lif e, rid e c omfort, and
hand ling , tire p ressure should b e maintained in ac c ord anc e with sp ec ifi-

c old . Cold means that
the vehic le has b een p arked for three hours or has b een d riven less than
1 mile (1.6 km).

Tire rotation
Tire wear will vary with eac h wheel. To inc rease th e life of tires and keep
wear uniform, it is b est to rotate them every 7,500 miles (12,000 km).
When rotating tires, rep lac e any unevenly worn or d amag ed tire. After
rotating the tires, ad just tire p ressure and b e sur e to c hec k wheel nut
tig htness.

10-42NOTE When any of the wheels is removed and replaced for tire rotation or to change a flat tire, always check the tightness of the wheelnuts after driving approximately 600 miles (1,000 km). If any nut isloose, tighten it to the specified torque.
Aluminum wheels (if equipped)

c arefully to maintain their ap p earanc e, p erformanc e , and safety.
When any of the wheels is removed and rep lac ed for tire rotation or to
c hang e a flat, always c hec k the tig htness of the wh eel nuts after d riving
ap p roximately 600 miles (1,000 km). If any nut is l oose, tig hten it to the
sp ec ified torq ue. Never ap p ly oil to the thread ed p arts, wheel nuts, or tap ered surfac e
of the wheel. Never let the wheel rub ag ainst sharp p rotrusions o r c urb s.
Be sure to fit tire c hains on uniformly and c omp let ely around the tire,
otherwise the c hains may sc ratc h the wheel. When wheel nuts, b alanc e weig hts, or the c enter c ap are rep lac ed ,
b e sure to rep lac e them with g enuine SUBARU p arts d esig ned for alumi-
num wheels.
