Using your Owner ’s manual
Before you op erate your vehic le, c arefully read thi s manual. To p rotec t
yourself and extend the servic e life of your vehic l e, follow the instruc tions
in this manual. Failure to ob serve these instruc tio ns may result in serious
injury and d amag e to your vehic le.
This manual is c omp osed of thirteen c hap ters. Eac h c hap ter b eg ins with
a b rief tab le of c ontents, so you c an usually tell at a g lanc e if that c hap -
ter c ontains the information you want. Chapter 1: Doors and Locks
This c hap ter informs you how to op erate the keys, l oc ks and wind ows.

’S HEAD TOO CLOSE TO
THE SRS AIRBAG. Always use the child safety locks whenever a child rides in the
rear seat. Serious injury could result if a child accidentallyopened the door and fell out. Refer to the “Door locks ” section in
chapter 1. Always lock the passenger ’s windows using the lock switch
when children are riding in the vehicle. Failure to follow this pro-cedure could result in injury to a child operating the power win-
dow. Refer to the “Power windows ” section in chapter 1.
Never leave unattended children in the vehicle. They could ac-
cidentally injure themselves or others through inadvertent opera-
tion of the vehicle. Also, on hot or sunny days, temperature in a
closed vehicle could quickly become high enough to cause se-vere or possibly fatal injuries to them.
Carefully read the sec tions “Child restraint systems ” , “SRS airb ag ” and
“ Seat b elts ” in c hap ter 2 of this owner ’s manual for instruc tions and p re-
c autions c onc erning the c hild restraint system, sea t b elt system and SRS
airb ag system. ENGINE EXHAUST GAS (CARBON MONOXIDE)
WARNING
Never inhale engine exhaust gas. Engine exhaust gas contains
carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas which is danger- ous, or even lethal, if inhaled. Always properly maintain the engine exhaust system to pre-
vent engine exhaust gas from entering the vehicle. Never run the engine in a closed space, such as a garage, ex-
cept for the brief time needed to drive the vehicle in or out of it. Avoid remaining in a parked vehicle for a lengthy time while
the engine is running. If that is unavoidable, then use the ventila-tion fan to force fresh air into the vehicle. Always keep the front ventilator inlet grille free from snow,
leaves or other obstructions to ensure that the ventilation system
always works properly.

loc k lever d own on the d oor and then c lose the d oor .
To loc k the d oor from the outsid e using the p ower d oor loc king switc h,
p ush the switc h rearward ( “LOCK ” sid e) and then c lose the d oor. In
this c ase, all c losed d oors and the rear g ate (for wag on and OUT-

Always make sure that all d oors and the rear g ate (

NOTE
Make sure that you do not leave the key inside the vehicle before

NOTE
Make sure that you do not leave the key inside the vehicle before
locking the doors from the outside without the key. Locking and unlocking from the inside
WARNING
Keep all doors locked when you drive, especially when small chil- dren are in your vehicle.
Along with the proper use of seat belts and child restraints, lock-ing the doors reduces the chance of being thrown out of the ve-hicle in an accident.It also helps prevent passengers from falling out if a door is acci-
dentally opened, and intruders from unexpectedly opening doorsand entering your vehicle.

When you c lose the d oors after you set the d oor loc ks, the d oors remain
loc ked . NOTE
Make sure that you do not leave the key inside the vehicle before locking the doors from the outside using power door lockingswitches.

Eac h rear d oor has a c hild safety loc k that p revent s the d oors from b eing
op ened even if the insid e d oor hand le is p ulled .
When the c hild safety loc k lever is in the loc k p os ition, the d oor c annot
b e op ened from insid e reg ard less of the p osition of the inner d oor hand le
loc k lever. The d oor c an only b e op ened from the ou tsid e.

n Locking the doors
Press the “LOCK ” b utton to loc k all d oors (and the rear g ate on the
wag on and OUTBACK SPORT). The p arking lig hts will f lash one time.
n Unlocking the doors
To unloc k the d river ’s d oor only, p ress and release the “UNLOCK ” b ut-
ton.
To unloc k all d oors (and the rear g ate on the wag on and OUTBACK
SPORT), p ress and hold the “UNLOCK ” b utton.
The p arking lig hts will flash one time.
The vehic le ’s interior (c ourtesy) lig ht will illuminate for 60 sec ond s or
until vehic le is started .
NOTE
1. Parking lights will flash when the vehicle ’s battery is discon-
nected and reconnected.
To stop lights from flashing, either: Press remote transmitter “UNLOCK” button once.
Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position and press pro-
gramming button for one second (see location below).
2. The vehicle ’s interior (courtesy) light and door open warning
light (DOOR AJAR indicator) will illuminate for 60 seconds when
the ignition is turned off, or until the doors are locked with the
