Snugly adjust the belts provided with this child restraint
around your child. The built-in child restraint should be used for only one child at
a time. Using it for two or more children at the same time couldresult in serious injury or death in an accident. Do not use the center lap and shoulder belt with the child re-
straint. A child using the center seatbelt could slide forward andout from under the seatbelt in a sudden stop or an accident, re-sulting in serious injury to the child.

Do not use another child restraint system over the opened
built-in child restraint. Because a child restraint system cannot be secured on the built-in restraint cushion, the restraint could
fall down during sudden braking, a sharp turn or in an accident,
causing serious injury to the child in it. Always keep the child restraint equipped rear seatback locked
securely in place when the child restraint is in use. Otherwise, inan accident, serious injury or death to a child could result if the
seatback falls down. The built-in child restraint, especially metallic parts, can be-
come hot in a vehicle that has been closed up in sunny weather;they could burn a small child. Check the child restraint beforeyou place a child in it.

The SRS airbags deploy with considerable speed and force.
Occupants who are out of proper position when the SRS airbag
deploys could suffer very serious injuries. Because the SRS air-bag needs enough space for deployment, the driver should al-ways sit upright and well back in the seat as far from the steeringwheel as practical while still maintaining full vehicle control and
the front passenger should move the seat as far back as possibleand sit upright and well back in the seat. Do not place any objects over or near the SRS airbag cover or
between you and the SRS airbag. If the SRS airbag deploys,those objects could interfere with its proper operation and could
be propelled inside the car and cause injury. Put children aged 12 and under in the rear seat properly re-
strained at all times. The SRS airbag deploys with considerablespeed and force and can injure or even kill children, especially ifthey are 12 years of age and under and are not restrained or im-properly restrained. Because children are lighter and weaker than
adults, their risk of being injured from deployment is greater.
For that reason, we strongly recommend that ALL children (in-cluding those in child seats and those that have outgrown child
restraint devices) sit in the REAR seat properly restrained at alltimes in a child restraint device or in a seatbelt, whichever is ap-propriate for the child ’s age, height and weight.
Secure ALL types of child restraint devices (including forwardfacing child seats) in the REAR seats at all times.According to accident statistics, children are safer when properlyrestrained in the rear seating positions than in the front seatingpositions.For instructions and precautions concerning the child restraint
system, see the “Child restraint systems ” section in this chapter.
NEVER INSTALL A REARWARD FACING CHILD SEAT IN THE
FRONT SEAT. DOING SO RISKS SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH TOTHE CHILD BY PLACING THE CHILD ’S HEAD TOO CLOSE TO
THE SRS AIRBAG. Never allow a child to stand up, or to kneel on the front pas-
senger’ s seat, or never hold a child on your lap or in your arms.

5. Install the b ac k half of the transmitter c ase.
6. Reinstall the two sc rews on the b ac k of the trans mitter c ase.
After the battery is replaced, the transmitter must be synchro-nized with the keyless entry system ’s control unit. Press either
the “LOCK/ARM” or “UNLOCK/DISARM” button six times to syn-
chronize the unit. Replacing lost transmitters
If you lose a transmitter or want to p urc hase ad d it ional transmitters
(up to four c an b e p rog rammed ), you should re-p rog r am all of your
transmitters for sec urity reasons. It is rec ommend e d that you have
your d ealer p rog ram all of your transmitters into y our system.
n Programming the transmitters
The keyless entry system is eq uip p ed with a sp ec ial c od e learning
feature that allows you to p rog ram new transmitter c od es into the sys-
tem or to d elete old ones. The system c an learn up to four uniq ue
transmitter c od es. The four transmitter c od es may b e the same or d if-
ferent.

theft. The horn sound s and the p arking lig hts flash if someone attemp ts
to b reak into your vehic le. The starter motor is al so interrup ted to p revent
starting the vehic le without a key.
The system c an b e armed and d isarmed with the remot e transmitter.

switc h.
System operation
The sec urity system will g ive the following alarm i nd ic ations when trig -
g ered : The p arking lig hts will flash and the horn will sou nd intermittently.
In ad d ition, the starter motor will not op erate. The alarm automatic ally resets after 30 sec ond s; ho wever, the
alarm will reac tivate if the vehic le is tamp ered wi th ag ain. The alarm
will c ontinue for twelve times if any sensor c ontin ues to b e ac tivated .
The alarm is trig g ered b y: Op ening a d oor, the rear g ate or trunk lid .
Ap p lic ation of p hysic al shoc k to the vehic le (e.g . b reaking g lass or
forc ed entry). Note that there are two alarm levels for shoc k: warning
and alarm. In warning mod e, the alarm d etec ts lower level vib rations
and trig g ers 2 warning c hirp s on the horn and two f lashes on the
lig hts as a d eterrent to would b e vand als. In alarm mod e, hig her lev-
els of shoc k are d etec ted and the system will g o in to full alarm.

Arming the system CAUTION
In passive mode, the system will automatically activate the alarm
but WILL NOT automatically lock the doors. In order to lock thedoors you must either lock them as indicated in step 4 below orwith the key once they have been closed. Failure to lock thedoors manually will result in a higher security risk.

1. Turn the ig nition switc h to the “ON ” p osition.
2. Turn the ig nition switc h from “ON ” to “LOCK ” p osition and remove
the key from the ig nition switc h.
3. Op en the d oors and g et out of the vehic le.

levers.
5. Close the d oors. The system will automatic ally ar m after one min-
ute.
In the p assive mod e, the system c an also b e armed w ith the remote

transmitter or p ower d oor loc k switc h is used to lo c k the vehic le, arm-

The “VDC OFF ” indicator light comes on when the engine has de-
veloped a problem and the CHECK ENGINE warning light is on. Depending on the type of gasoline used, the “VDC OFF ” indicator
light may not go out soon after the engine has been started.
The VDC system is p rob ab ly faulty und er any of the following c ond itions.
Have your vehic le c hec ked at a SUBARU d ealer as soo n as p ossib le.
The VDC OFF ind ic ator lig ht d oes not c ome on when t he ig nition
switc h is turned to the “ON ” p osition.
The lig ht d oes not g o out even after several minute s have p assed (the
eng ine has warmed up ) after the eng ine has b een sta rted .
Security system status indicator light (if equipped)
This lig ht is found at the b ottom c enter of the c om b ination meter p anel.
On vehic les eq uip p ed with a sec urity system, it b li nks to show the d river
the op erational status of the sec urity system. For d etailed information, re-
fer to the “Sec urity system ” in Chap ter 2.
Shift position indicator (for AT vehicles)
This ind ic ator shows the p osition of the shift leve r.
Turn signal indicator lights
These lig hts show the op eration of the turn sig nal or lane c hang e sig nal.
If the ind ic ator lig hts d o not b link or b link rap id ly, the turn sig nal b ulb
may b e b urned out. Rep lac e the b ulb as soon as p oss ib le. Refer to the
“ Rep lac ing b ulb s ” sec tion in c hap ter 11.
High beam indicator light
This lig ht shows that the head lig hts are in the hig h b eam mod e.
This ind ic ator lig ht also c omes on when op erating h ead lig ht flasher.

CAUTION
Make sure the driver ’s floor mat is placed back in its proper loca-
tion and correctly secured on its retaining pin. If the floor mat slips forward and interferes with the movement of the pedals dur-ing driving, it could cause an accident.

Luggage cover (if equipped)
WARNING
Do not place anything on the extended cover. Putting excessive weight on the extended cover can break it and an object on the
cover could tumble forward in the event of a sudden stop or colli-
sion. This could cause serious injury.
The lug g ag e c over is p rovid ed for c overing the c arg o area and to p ro-
tec t its c ontents from d irec t sunlig ht. This c over is d etac hab le to make
room for ad d itional c arg o.

6-16Cargo anchorage eyelets (if equipped)
CAUTION
The cargo anchorage eyelets are designed only for securing light
cargo. Never try to secure cargo that exceeds the capacity of thehooks. The maximum load capacity is 44 lb (20 kg) per eyelet.

When using the anc horag e eyelets, turn them d own ou t of the storing

Storage tray (if equipped)
CAUTION
Always keep the lid of the storage tray closed while driving to
reduce the risk of injury in the event of sudden stop or an acci- dent. Do not store spray cans, containers with flammable or corro-
sive liquids or any other dangerous items in the storage tray.
