Ignition switch
WARNING
Never turn the ignition switch to “LOCK” while the vehicle is be-
ing driven or towed because that will lock the steering wheel, pre- venting steering control. And when the engine is turned off, it
takes a much greater effort than usual to steer.
The ig nition switc h has four p ositions: LOCK, ACC, ON and START.

LOCK
The key c an only b e inserted or removed in this p os ition. The ig nition
switc h will loc k the steering wheel when you remove the key.
If turning the key is d iffic ult, turn the steering wheel slig htly to the rig ht
and left as you turn the key.

The key c an b e turned from “ACC ” to “LOCK ” only when the selec tor
lever is in the “P ” p osition.
n Manual transmission vehicles

The key c an b e turned from “ACC ” to “LOCK ” only when the key is
p ushed in while turning it. ACC
In this p osition the elec tric al ac c essories (rad io, ac c essory p ower
soc ket, etc .) c an b e used . ON
This is the normal op erating p osition after the eng ine is started .

START CAUTION
Do not turn the ignition switch to the “START” position while the
engine is running.
The eng ine is started in this p osition. The starter c ranks the eng ine to
start it. When the key is released (after the eng in e has started ), the
key automatic ally returns to the “ON ” p osition.
Key reminder chime
The remind er c hime sound s when the d river ’s d oor op ens and the key is
in the “LOCK ” or “ACC ” p ositions. The c hime stop s when the key is re-
moved from the ig nition switc h.
Key interlock release (AT vehicles only)
If the key c an not b e turned to the “LOCK ” p osition even when the selec -
tor lever is in the “P ” p osition:

1. Take out the sc rewd river from the tool b ag .
2. Remove the c over und er the steering c olumn using a p hillip s
sc rewd river.
3. Turn the ig nition key while p ressing the key inte rloc k release lever.
Take your vehic le to the nearest SUBARU d ealer imme d iately to have
the key interloc k system rep aired .
Hazard warning flasher

The hazard warning flasher is used to warn other d r ivers when you have
to p ark your vehic le und er emerg enc y c ond itions. Th e hazard warning
flasher works with the ig nition switc h in any p osit ion.

ard warning b utton
on the instrument p anel. To turn off the flasher, p ush the b utton ag ain.
NOTE When the hazard warning flasher is on, the turn signals do not work.

is in the “ON ” p osition.
To c hang e the mod e ind ic ation, b riefly p ush the kno b .
The od ometer shows the total d istanc e that the vehi c le has b een d riven.
The trip meter shows the d istanc e that the vehic le has b een d riven sinc e
you last set it to zero.
To set the trip meter to zero, selec t the ind ic atio n of the trip meter b y
p ushing the knob and keep the knob p ushed for more than 2 sec ond s.
NOTE If the connection between the combination meter and battery is bro-
ken for any reason such as vehicle maintenance or fuse replace-ment, the data recorded on the trip meter will be lost. Tachometer (if equipped)
CAUTION
Do not operate the engine with the pointer of the tachometer in
the red zone. In this range, fuel injection will be cut by the enginecontrol module to protect the engine from overrevving. Theengine will resume running normally after the engine speed isreduced below the red zone.
The tac hometer shows the eng ine sp eed in thousand s of revolutions p er
minute. Fuel gauge
The fuel g aug e shows the ap p roximate amount of fuel remaining in the
tank.
The g aug e d oes not return to “E ” even thoug h the ig nition switc h is in the
“ ACC ” or “LOCK ” p osition.
The g aug e may move slig htly d uring b raking , turning or ac c eleration d ue
to fuel level movement in the tank.

Temperature gauge
CAUTION
If the pointer exceeds the normal operating range, safely stop the
vehicle as soon as possible.
See “ In case of emergency ” in this manual.

The temp erature g aug e shows eng ine c oolant temp erat ure when the
ig nition switc h is in the “ON ” p osition.
The c oolant temp erature will vary in ac c ord anc e wit h the outsid e temp er-
ature and d riving c ond itions.
We rec ommend that you d rive mod erately until the p o inter of the temp er-
ature g aug e reac hes near the mid d le of the rang e. E ng ine op eration is
op timum with the eng ine c oolant at this temp erature rang e and hig h rev-
ving op eration when eng ine is not warmed up enoug h should b e
avoid ed .
