AUTO mode operation:
The Automatic Climate Control system automatic ally c ontrols the air
temp erature of the p asseng er c omp artment in the AUT O mod e. When
the “AUTO ” switc h is p ressed , the ind ic ator lig ht “AUTO ” on the c on-
trol p anel c omes on. In this state, outlet air temp erature, fan sp eed , air
flow d istrib ution, air-inlet c ontrol, and air c ond i tioner c omp ressor op -
eration are automatic ally c ontrolled . ECON (economy) mode:
When you p ress the “AUTO ” switc h while the system is in the AUTO
mod e, it selec ts the ECON (ec onomy) mod e, turning o n the

” ind ic ator lig ht. In the ECON mod e, the c omp ressor runs to
b e thrifty with energ y c onsump tion. Interior wind ow s tend to fog in this
energ y-saving op eration. It is therefore rec ommend e d that the AUTO
mod e b e used only in hig h humid ity c ond itions. Manual mode operation:
When the Automatic Climate Control system is op erat ing in the AUTO
mod e, p ressing the “
”, “”, “MODE ”, “A/C ” or

” switc h shifts the op eration into the “MANUAL ” mod e and the
ind ic ator lig ht “AUTO ” on the c ontrol p anel will g o out.
When the “
”, “”, “MODE ”, “A/C ” or “”
switc h is p ressed , the c orresp ond ing func tion c an b e c ontrolled ind e-
p end ently, while automatic c ontrol of the other fun c tions are main-
tained .
To c hang e the system b ac k to the AUTO mod e, p ress t he “AUTO ”
switc h. n OFF switch
The Automatic Climate Control system turns off (the air c ond itioner
c omp ressor and fan turn off) when the “OFF ” switc h is p ressed .
When the “OFF ” switc h is p ressed , the outsid e air introd uc tion mo d e
( “
” p osition) is automatic ally selec ted .
NOTE Setting the light switch to the “p ” or “ a ” position causes the
illuminating icons on the display panel to dim. When traveling with the lights on in gloomy daylight or in twilight, press the OFFswitch for 1 second or longer if you feel it is too hard to identify
the icons clearly. The brightness comes back to normal. n OUT.TEMP switch
To c hec k the outsid e air temp erature, p ush the “OUT.TEMP ” switc h.
The outsid e air temp erature will b e d isp layed for f ive sec ond s, and
then the d isp lay automatic ally c hang es b ac k to the insid e air temp er-
ature.
The d isp lay c hang es over from the insid e air temp er ature to the out-
sid e air temp erature as its normal ind ic ation if yo u keep the switc h
p ressed for more than 2 sec ond s.

4-14NOTE
You can check the outside air temperature even when the Au-
tomatic Climate Control is off. (The ignition switch should be in the “ON” position.)
In the following cases, the display can indicate a higher tem-
perature than the actual outside air temperature: – In direct sunlight
– When the vehicle is parked for a long period of time with the
engine kept running.– During stop and go driving
n
— Defroster switch
To d efrost or d ehumid ify the wind shield and sid e wi nd ow, p ush the
d efroster switc h “
”. When the “” switc h is p ushed , re-
g ard less whether the air c ond itioner is op erating o r not, outsid e air is
d rawn into the p asseng er c omp artment, the air c ond i tioner c omp res-
sor turns on, air flow is d irec ted toward s the wind shield and sid e win-
d ows, and the ind ic ator lig ht “
” on the c ontrol p anel c omes on.
After eliminating the fog g ing from the wind shield , set the air c ond ition-
er b ac k in the AUTO mod e b y p ushing the “AUTO ” switc h or turn off
b y p ushing the “OFF ” switc h or “
” switc h.

ion, the fan sp eed
c hang es automatic ally c orresp ond ing to various c ond itions: air tem-
p erature insid e and outsid e of the p asseng er c omp ar tment, intensity
of the sunlig ht, etc .
Use this switc h to selec t d esired fan sp eed . Fan sp eed inc reases with
eac h p ress of the switc h and returns to the AUTO p o sition.
n A/C — Air conditioner switch
NOTE The air conditioner compressor does not operate when the out- side air temperature is below 32 F (0 C).
If the wind shield starts to fog when the air c ond it ioner is op erated in
the AUTO mod e, p ush the air c ond itioner switc h “A/C ” to d efog and
d ehumid ify.
When this switc h is p ushed , the air c ond itioner c om p ressor turns on
and the ind ic ator lig ht “A/C ” on the c ontrol p anel c omes on. After
eliminating the fog g ing from the wind shield , set th e air c ond itioner
b ac k in the AUTO mod e b y p ushing the “AUTO ” switc h.
n MODE — Air flow control switch
(Ventilation) : Air flows throug h the instrument p an el outlets.
(Bi-level) : Air flows throug h the instrument p anel outlets
and the foot outlets.
(Heat) : Air flows throug h the foot outlets and some throug h the wind shield d efroster outlets.
(Heat-d ef) : Air flows throug h the wind shield d efros ter out-
lets and foot outlet.

Temperature control dial
HB5023BB
NOTE A setting of about 77 F (25 C) throughout the year is recom-
mended. The temperature setting remains even after the ignition switch
is turned to the “OFF”. However, if the battery cables are discon-
nected, the temperature will be set to 77 F (25 C) automatically.
Set d esired temp erature b y turning the temp erature c ontrol d ial; turn
the d ial c loc kwise to raise the temp erature setting and turn it c ounter-
c loc kwise to lower it.
The temp erature c an b e set in inc rements of 1 F within a rang e of 65
– 85 F for US mod els and in inc rements of 0.5 C within a rang e of 18
– 32 C for Canad ian mod els.
Even when q uic k c ooling or warming is nec essary, yo u d o not have to
c hang e the temp erature setting . The Automatic Clima te Control sys-
tem op erates at maximum p erformanc e until the air i n the p asseng er
c omp artment reac hes to the sp ec ified temp erature.

Temperature sensors
This Automatic Climate Control system emp loys the s everal sensors.
These are very d elic ate p arts. Therefore, if these sensors are d am-
ag ed , it is p ossib le that the Automatic Climate Con trol system will not
p rop erly c ontrol the air temp erature in the p asseng er c omp artment.
To p revent p ossib le d amag e to the sensors, p lease o b serve the fol-
lowing :
–Do not allow anything to imp ac t the sensors.
– Be c areful not to let water c ontac t the sensors.
– Do not c over the sensors.
The sensors are found at the following loc ations: – Sun-load sensor (b esid e the wind shield d efroster g r ille)
– In-vehic le temp erature sensor (b esid e the temp eratu re c ontrol
d ial.)
– Amb ient sensor (at the b ac ksid e of the front g rille )

Operating tips for heater and air conditioner
Cleaning ventilator grille
HB5019BC
Always keep the front ventilator inlet g rille free of snow, leaves, or oth-
er ob struc tions to ensure effic ient heating and d ef rosting . Sinc e the
c ond enser is loc ated in front of the rad iator, this area should b e kep t
c lean b ec ause c ooling p erformanc e is imp aired b y an y ac c umulation
of insec ts and leaves on the c ond enser. Efficient cooling after parking in direct sunlight
After p arking in d irec t sunlig ht, d rive with the wi nd ows op en for a few
minutes to allow outsid e air to c irc ulate into the heated interior. This
results in q uic ker c ooling b y the air c ond itioner. Keep the wind ows
c losed d uring the op eration of the air c ond itioner for maximum c ool-
ing effic ienc y. Lubrication oil circulation in the refrigerant circuit
Op erate the air c ond itioner c omp ressor at a low eng ine sp eed (at id le
or low d riving sp eed s) a few minutes eac h month d ur ing the off-sea-
son to c irc ulate its oil. Checking air conditioning system before summer season
Chec k the air c ond itioner unit for refrig erant leak s, hose c ond itions,
and p rop er op eration eac h sp ring . This c hec k is b es t p erformed b y
your SUBARU d ealer.

Cooling and dehumidifying in high humidity and low tempera- ture weather condition
Und er c ertain weather c ond itions (hig h relative hum id ity, low temp era-
tures, etc .) a small amount of water vap or emission from the air outlets
may b e notic ed . This c ond ition is normal and d oes n ot ind ic ate any
p rob lem with the air c ond itioning system. Air conditioner compressor shut-off when engine is heavily loaded
To imp rove ac c eleration and g as mileag e, the air c o nd itioner c om-
p ressor is d esig ned to temp orarily shut off d uring air c ond itioner op -
eration whenever the ac c elerator is fully d ep ressed suc h as d uring
rap id ac c erelation or when d riving on a steep up g ra d e.
Refrigerant for your climate control system
Your air c ond itioner uses ozone friend ly refrig eran t HFC134a. There-
fore, the method of ad d ing , c hang ing or c hec king th e refrig erant is
d ifferent from the method for CFC12 (freon). Consul t your SUBARU
d ealer for servic e. Rep airs need ed as a result of u sing the wrong
refrig erant are not c overed und er warranty.
Air filtration system (if equipped)
If your vehic le ’s air c ond itioning system is eq uip p ed with a op tion al air
filtration system, rep lac e the filter element ac c or d ing to the rep lac ement
sc hed ule shown b elow. This sc hed ule should b e follo wed to maintain the
filter ’s d ust c ollec tion ab ility. Und er extremely d usty c o nd itions, the filter
should b e rep lac ed more freq uently. Sinc e the filte r element is a visc ous
typ e, it is unnec essary to c lean or wash the elemen t. Have your filter
c hec ked or rep lac ed b y your SUBARU d ealer.
Replacement schedule: Every 12 months or 7,500 miles (12,000 km) whichever comes first
NOTE The filter can influence the air conditioning, heating and defroster performance.
