Always use the child safety lock whenever a child rides in the rear seat. Serious injury could result if a child accidentallyopened the door and fell out.

Power windows
WARNING
When operating power windows, be extremely careful to pre-
vent anyone ’s fingers, arms or head from being caught in the
window. Always lock the passengers ’ windows using the lock switch
when children are riding in the vehicle. Before leaving the vehicle, always remove the key from the
ignition switch for safety and never allow an unattended child toremain in the vehicle. Failure to follow this procedure could result
in injury to a child operating the power window.
The p ower wind ows op erate only when the ig nition sw itc h is in the “ON ”
p osition.

as the switc h is held .
Pull the switc h up lig htly and hold it. The wind ow will c lose as long as

WARNING
To prevent dangerous exhaust gas from entering the vehicle,
always keep the trunk lid closed while driving. Help prevent young children from locking themselves in the
trunk. When leaving the vehicle, either close all windows and lockall doors or cancel the inside trunk lid release. Also make certainthat the trunk is closed.

Ignition switch
WARNING
Never turn the ignition switch to “LOCK” while the vehicle is be-
ing driven or towed because that will lock the steering wheel, pre- venting steering control. And when the engine is turned off, it
takes a much greater effort than usual to steer.
The ig nition switc h has four p ositions: LOCK, ACC, ON and START.

The key c an only b e inserted or removed in this p os ition. The ig nition
switc h will loc k the steering wheel when you remove the key.
If turning the key is d iffic ult, turn the steering wheel slig htly to the rig ht
and left as you turn the key.

This is the normal op erating p osition after the eng ine is started .

START CAUTION
Do not turn the ignition switch to the “START” position while the
engine is running.
The eng ine is started in this p osition. The starter c ranks the eng ine to
start it. When the key is released (after the eng in e has started ), the
key automatic ally returns to the “ON ” p osition.
Key reminder chime
The remind er c hime sound s when the d river ’s d oor op ens and the key is
in the “LOCK ” or “ACC ” p ositions. The c hime stop s when the key is re-
moved from the ig nition switc h.
Key interlock release (AT vehicles only)
If the key c an not b e turned to the “LOCK ” p osition even when the selec -
tor lever is in the “P ” p osition:

For vehicles with an automatic climate control, outside temperature can be displayed on the climate control display panel. Refer to the“
Automatic climate control system ” in chapter 4.
Fuel gauge
The fuel g aug e shows the ap p roximate amount of fuel remaining in the
tank.
The g aug e d oes not return to “E ” even thoug h the ig nition switc h is in the
“ ACC ” or “LOCK ” p osition.
The g aug e may move slig htly d uring b raking , turning or ac c eleration d ue
to fuel level movement in the tank.
Temperature gauge
CAUTION
If the pointer exceeds the normal operating range, safely stop the
vehicle as soon as possible.
See “ In case of emergency ” in chapter 9.

The temp erature g aug e shows eng ine c oolant temp erat ure when the
ig nition switc h is in the “ON ” p osition.
The c oolant temp erature will vary in ac c ord anc e wit h the outsid e temp er-
ature and d riving c ond itions.
