system and the shift lever is in D, a buzzer will sound and the Stop & Start
system indicator will flash. To stop the buzzer, close the driver’s door.
Q The Stop & Start system protection function
O When the volume of the audio system is excessively high, sound output
from the audio system may suddenly be cut off in order to reduce battery
consumption. To prevent the audio system from being cut off, keep the vol-
ume of audio system at a moderate level. If the audio system has been cut
off, turn the engine switch to the “LOCK” position*1 or off*2, wait for 3 sec-

audio system.
O The audio system may not be activated if the battery terminals are discon-
nected and then reconnected. If this occurs, turn the engine switch to the
“LOCK” position*1 or off*2 and then repeat the following operation twice to
activate the audio system normally.
• Turn the engine switch to the “ON” position*1 or IGNITION ON mode*2

systems will be automatically re-enabled in the following situations:
O When the engine switch is turned to the “LOCK” position (vehicles without
smart entry & start system) or off (vehicles with smart entry & start system).
O If only the TRC/A-TRC system is turned off (P. 357), the TRC/A-TRC will
turn on when vehicle speed increases.
If the TRC, A-TRC, VSC and Trailer Sway Control systems are turned off
( P. 359), automatic re-enabling will not occur when vehicle speed
increases.
Q Operating conditions of the hill-start assist control
When the following four conditions are me t, the hill-start assist control will
operate:
O Vehicles with automatic transmission: The shift lever is in a position other
than P or N (when starting off forward/backward on an upward incline)
Vehicles with manual transmission: The shift lever is in a position other than
R when starting off forward on an upward incline, or the shift lever is in R

Q System malfunction
In the following cases, have your vehicle checked by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
O The downhill assist control system indicator does not come on when the
engine switch is turned to the “ON” position (vehicles without smart entry &
start system) or IGNITION ON mode (vehicles with smart entry & start sys-
tem).
O The downhill assist control system indicator does not come on when the
“DAC” switch is pressed.
O The slip indicator comes on.
WARNING
QWhen using downhill assist control system
O Do not rely overmuch on the downhill assist control system. This function
does not extend the vehicle’s performance limitations. Always thoroughly
check the road conditions, and drive safely.
O Vehicles with manual transmission: Drive in a low gear. Driving in a high
gear when using downhill assist control system may cause the engine to
stall, which may lose the brake effectiveness and lock the tires, resulting in
an accident.
O Vehicles with manual transmission: On a steep slope, use the engine brak-
ing efficiently. If the vehicle is driven in N or with the clutch pedal
depressed on a steep slope, the load on the brake increases and con-
trolling the vehicle speed may be impossible, resulting in an accident.
Q The system may not operate on the following surfaces, which may lead
to an accident causing death or serious injury
O Slippery surfaces such as wet or muddy roads
O Icy surface
O Unpaved roads
