Maintenance and care
You may drain the fuel filter yourself. However, as the operation is dif-
ficult, we recommend having it drained by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer. Even if
you decide to drain it yourself, contact any authorized Toyota retailer
or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
The water in the fuel filter needs to be drained if one of the following
symptoms occurs:
Vehicles without multi-information display
When the fuel system warning light flashes and a buzzer sounds.
( P. 569)
Vehicles with multi-information display
When “Water accumulation in fuel filter See owner’s manual” is
shown on the multi-information display and a buzzer sounds*1.
Vehicles without smart entry & start system: Turn the engine switch
to the “LOCK” position.
Vehicles with smart entry & start system: Turn the engine switch off.
Place a small tray under the drain plug or drain hose to catch the
water and any fuel that comes out.
Perform the draining as shown in the illustration.
Turn the drain plug counter-
clockwise about 2 to 2 1/2
turns.
Loosening more than this will
cause water oozing from around
the drain plug.
Operate the priming pump
until fuel begins to run out.
After draining, tighten the drain plug by hand.

6449-1. Specifications
HILUX_OM_OM0K513E_(EE)
QUse of ethanol blended gasoline in a gasoline engine
Toyota allows the use of ethanol blended gasoline where the ethanol content
is up to 10%. Make sure that the ethanol blended gasoline to be used has a
Research Octane Number that follows the above.
Q If you plan to drive in foreign countries (vehicles with DPF system)
Low sulfur diesel fuel may not be avai lable, so please check the availability
with your distributor.
Q If your engine knocks
O Consult any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any
reliable repairer.
O You may occasionally notice light knocking for a short time while accelerat-
ing or driving uphill. This is normal and there is no need for concern.
NOTICE
Q Notice on gasoline fuel quality
O Do not use improper fuels. If improper fuels are used, the engine will be
damaged.
O Do not use gasoline with metallic additives, for example manganese, iron
or lead, otherwise it may cause damage on your engine or emission con-
trol system.
O Do not add aftermarket fuel additives which contain metallic additives.
O Do not use the methanol blended gasoline such as M15, M85, M100. The
use of gasoline containing methanol may cause engine damage or failure.
O Bioethanol fuel sold under names such as “E50” or “E85” and fuel contain-
ing a large amount of ethanol should not be used. Your vehicle can use
gasoline mixed with 10% max ethanol. The use of fuel with more than 10%
ethanol content (E10) will damage the vehicle’s fuel system. You must
ensure that refueling is carried out only from a source where fuel specifica-
tion and quality can be guaranteed. In case of any doubt, ask any autho-
rized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
