QSituations in which the system may operate even if there is no possibil-
ity of a collision
In some situations, such as the following, the system may opera te even
though there is no possibility of a collision.
O When driving toward a banner, flag, low-hanging branch or boom barrier
(such as those used at railroad crossings, toll gates and parki ng lots)
O When there is a rut or hole in the surface of the road
O When driving on a metal cover (grating), such as those used for drainage
ditches
O When driving up or down a steep slope
O If a sensor is hit by a large amount of water, such as when driving on a
flooded road
O There is dirt, snow, water drops or ice on a sensor. (Cleaning the sensors
will resolve this problem.)
O A sensor is coated with a sheet of spray or heavy rain
O When driving in inclement weather such as fog, snow or a sandstorm
O When vehicle horns, vehicle detectors, motorcycle engines, air brakes of
large vehicles, the clearance sonar of other vehicles or other devices which
produce ultrasonic waves are near the vehicle
O If the front of the vehicle is raised or lowered due to the carried load
O If the orientation of a sensor has been changed due to a collision or other
impact
O Driving close to columns (H-shaped steel beams, etc.) in multi-story parking
garages, construction sites, etc.
O If the vehicle cannot be driven in a stable manner, such as when the vehicle
has been in an accident or is malfunctioning
O When driving on a narrow road
O When strong winds are blowing

O When tire chains, a compact spare tire or an emergency tire puncture repair
kit are used.
O On an extremely bumpy road, on an
incline, on gravel, or on grass

Q Cautions regarding the use of the system
There is a limit to the degree of recognition accuracy and cont rol perfor-
mance that this system can provide, do not overly rely on this system. The
driver is always responsible for paying attention to the vehicl e’s surround-
ings and driving safely.
Q To ensure the system can operate properly
Observe the following precautions to avoid an unexpected accide nt.
O Do not damage the sensors, and always keep them clean.
O Do not attach a sticker or install an electronic component, such as a backlit
license plate (especially fluorescent type), fog lights, fender pole or wire-
less antenna near a radar sensor.
O Do not subject the surrounding area of the sensor to a strong impact. If
subjected to an impact, have the vehicle inspected by any autho rized
Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer. If the
front or rear bumper needs to be removed/installed or replaced, contact
any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, o r any reliable
repairer.
O Do not modify, disassemble or paint the sensors.
O Do not attach a license plate cover.
O Keep your tires properly inflated.
Q When to disable the function
In the following situations, disable the function as it may ope rate even
though there is no possibility of a collision.
O Failing to observe the warnings above.
O A non-genuine Toyota suspension (lowered suspension, etc.) is installed.

WARNING
QSide sensors
In the following situations, the Toyota parking assist-sensor m ay not operate
normally and may result in an unexpected accident. Drive carefu lly.
O Obstacles may not be detected in the side areas until the vehicle is driven
for a short time and a scan of the side areas is completed. ( P. 456)
O Even after the scan of the side areas is completed, obstacles such as
other vehicles, people or animals that approach from the sides cannot be
detected.
O Even after the scan of the side areas is completed, obstacles may not be
detected depending on the surrounding situation of the vehicle.
At that time, the side sensor operation displays ( P. 451) temporary turn
off.
Q Notes when washing the vehicle
O Do not apply intensive bursts of water or steam to the sensor area.
Doing so may result in the sensor malfunctioning.
O When using steam to wash the vehicle, do not direct steam too close to
the sensors. The sensors may not function properly if subjected to steam.
NOTICE
QWhen using Toyota parking assist-sensor
In the following situations, the system may not function correc tly due to a
sensor malfunction etc. Have the vehicle checked by any authori zed Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repaire r.
O Toyota parking assist-sensor operation display flashes, and a beep
sounds when no obstacles are detected.
O If the area around a sensor collides with something, or is subjected to
strong impact.
O If the bumper collides with something.
O If the display shows up and remains on without a beep.
O If a display error occurs, first check the sensor.
If the error occurs even when there is no ice, snow or mud on t he sensor, it
is likely that the sensor is malfunctioning.

Parking Support Brake function
The system operates in the following situations when an obstacle is
detected in the traveling direction of the vehicle.
XThe vehicle is driven at low speeds and the brake pedal is not
depressed, or is depressed too late
XThe accelerator pedal is depressed too far
: If equipped
When a collision may occur with an obstacle while parking or
traveling at low speeds, when the vehicle suddenly moves for-
ward due to mistaken accelerator pedal operation, or when the
vehicle moves due to the wrong shift position being selected,
the sensors detect obstacles to the front or rear in the travel ing
direction of the vehicle, and the system operates to lessen
impact with obstacles such as walls, and reduce resulting dam-
age.

The Parking Support Brake function can be enabled/disabled on t he
screen ( P. 247) of the multi-information display.
When the Parking Support Brake
function is off, the PKSB OFF indi-
cator illuminates.
When the Parking Support Brake function is switched off, system operation
does not resume until the function is switched back on through the
screen on the multi-information display. (System operation does not
resume by operating the power switch.)

When the Parking Support Brake function detects an obstacle with a
probability of collision, hybrid system output is restricted to restrain an
increase in vehicle speed. (Hybrid system output restriction control: A)
Furthermore, when the accelerator pedal continues to be depressed,
the brakes are applied to reduce the vehicle speed. (Brake control: B)

QOperation starting conditions
When the PKSB OFF indicator is not illuminated or flashing
(P. 470, 660) and all of the following conditions are met, the
system operates.
Hybrid system output restriction control
OThe Parking Support Brake function is on.
OThe vehicle speed is approximately 15 km/h (10 mph) or less.
OThere is an obstacle in the traveling direction of the vehicle
(approximately 2 to 4 m [6 to 13 ft.] ahead).
OThe system determined that a stronger-than-normal brake opera-
tion was necessary to avoid a collision.
Brake control
OHybrid system output restriction control is being performed.
OThe system determined that an emergency brake operation was
necessary to avoid a collision.
QOperation ending conditions
In any of the following situations, the system stops operating.
Hybrid system output restriction control
OThe Parking Support Brake function has been turned off
(stopped).
OThe collision became avoidable with normal brake operation.
OThe obstacle is no longer in the traveling direction of the vehicle
(approximately 2 to 4 m [6 to 13 ft.] ahead).
Brake control
OThe Parking Support Brake function has been turned off
(stopped).
OApproximately 2 seconds elapsed after the vehicle was stopped
by brake control.
OThe brake pedal was depressed after the vehicle was stopped by
brake control.
OThe obstacle is no longer in the traveling direction of the vehicle
(approximately 2 to 4 m [6 to 13 ft.] ahead).

When the hybrid system output restriction control or brake control
operates, the buzzer sounds and a message is displayed on the multi-
information display to alert the driver.
Depending on the situation, output restriction control operates to either
limit acceleration or restrict output as much as possible.
