QIf “ Switch Malfunction Apply Parking Brake Securely While Parking
See Owner’s Manual” is shown
The P position switch may not operate. Immediately have the veh icle
inspected by any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorize d repairer, or
any reliable repairer.
When parking the vehicle, stop the vehicle on level ground and apply the
parking brake firmly.
Q If “Shift System Malfunction Shifting Unavailable See Owner’s Manual”
is shown
Indicates a malfunction in the shift control system. Immediatel y have the vehi-

Indicates that the shift position cannot be changed because the voltage of the
12-volt battery drops. Charge or replace the 12-volt battery.

Q If “Hybrid System Overheated. Reduced Output Power.” is shown
The message may be shown when driving under severe operating co nditions.
(For example, when driving up a long steep hill or driving up a steep hill in

Q If “Maintenance Required for Traction Battery Cooling Parts See Owner’s
Manual” is shown
There is a possibility that the filter may be clogged, the air intake vent may be
blocked or there may be a gap in the duct.
O When the air intake vents or filters are dirty, clean them by the procedures
on P. 573.
O When the air intake vents or filters are not dirty and the warning message is
shown, have the vehicle inspected at any authorized Toyota reta iler or
Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
Q If “Traction Battery Needs to be Protected Refrain From the Use of
Position” is shown
This message may be displayed when the shift position is in N.
As the hybrid battery (traction battery) can not be charged whe n the shift
position is in N, shift the shift position to P when the vehicl e is stopped.
Q If “Traction Battery Needs to be Protected Shift into to Restart” is
shown
This message is displayed when the hybrid battery (traction bat tery) charge
has become extremely low because the vehicle has been left with the N shift
position selected for a certain amount of time.
When operating the vehicle, shift to P and restart the hybrid s ystem.
Q If “Shifted into Shift Again to Start Vehicle” is shown
Message is displayed when the automatic P position selection fu nction oper-
ates. ( P. 332)
To start off the vehicle after the shift position is changed to P, operate the shift
lever again.
Q If “Shift to Before Exiting Vehicle” is shown
Message is displayed when the driver’s door is opened without t urning the
power switch to off with the shift position in any position oth er than P.
Shift the shift position to P.
Q If “Shift is in Release Accelerator Before Shifting” is shown
Message is displayed when the accelerator pedal has been depres sed and
the shift position is in N.
Release the accelerator pedal and shift the shift position to D or R.
Q If “Depress Brake When Vehicle is Stopped. Hybrid System may Over-
heat.” is shown
The message may be shown when the accelerator pedal is depresse d to hold
the vehicle while the vehicle is stopped on an uphill, etc.
The hybrid system may overheat. Release the accelerator pedal a nd depress
the brake pedal.
Q If “Shifted to Stop Vehicle to Shift to ” is shown
If the P position switch is pressed while driving, the shift po sition is changed
to N and the message is shown. ( P. 331)

When trouble arises
QIf “Auto Power OFF to Conserve Battery” is shown
The power switch has been turned off by the automatic power off function.
When starting the hybrid system next time, operate the hybrid s ystem for
approximately 5 minutes to recharge the 12-volt battery.
Q If “Engine Oil Level Low Add or Replace” is displayed
The engine oil level may be low. Check the level of the engine oil, and add
engine oil if necessary. This message may be displayed if the v ehicle is
stopped on a slope. Move the vehicle to a level surface and che ck if the mes-
sage disappears.
Q If “Accelerator and Brake Pedals Pressed Simultaneously” is shown
The accelerator and brake pedals are being depressed simultaneo usly.

Release the accelerator pedal and depress the brake pedal.
Q If a message that indicates the malfunction of front camera is displayed
The following systems may be suspended until the problem shown in the
message is resolved. ( P. 366, 657)
O PCS (Pre-Collision System)

Q If the shift position cannot be changed or the power switch is turned to
ACCESSORY mode even if trying to turn the power switch off when a
warning message is shown
If the 12-volt battery is discharged or the shift control syste m is malfunction-
ing, the followings may occur.
O The shift position may not be changed to P.
When parking, stop the vehicle on level ground and apply the pa rking brake
firmly.
O The hybrid system may not start.
O The power switch may be turned to ACCESSORY mode even if trying to
turn the power switch off.
In this case, the power switch may be turned off after applying the parking
brake.
O The automatic P position selection function (P. 332) may not operate.
Before turning the power switch off, be sure to press the P pos ition switch
and check that the shift position is in P by the shift position indicator or P
position switch indicator.

battery) inspected will cause the hybrid system not to start.

QStopping the hybrid system
Set the parking brake, shift the shift position to P and press the power switch
as you normally do when stopping the hybrid system.
Q Replacing the key battery
As the above procedure is a temporary measure, it is recommende d that the
electronic key battery be replaced immediately when the battery is depleted.
( P. 631)
Q Alarm (if equipped)
Using the mechanical key to lock the doors will not set the ala rm system.
If a door is unlocked using the mechanical key when the alarm s ystem is set,
the alarm may be triggered. ( P. 7 6 )
Q Changing power switch modes
Release the brake pedal and press the power switch in step abo ve. The
hybrid system does not start and modes will be changed each tim e the switch
is pressed. ( P. 325)
Q When the electronic key does not work properly
O Make sure that the smart entry & start system has not been deactivated in
the customization setting. If it is off, turn the function on.

O Check if battery-saving mode is set. If it is set, cancel the function.

WARNING
QWhen using the mechanical key and operating the power windows
Operate the power window after checking to make sure that there is no pos-
sibility of any passenger having any of their body parts caught in the win-
dow.
Also, do not allow children to operate the mechanical key. It i s possible for
children and other passengers to get caught in the power window .

The coolant level is satisfactory if it is between the “MAX” and
“MIN” lines on the reservoir.

Add coolant if necessary.
Water can be used in an emer-
gency if coolant is unavailable.
Start the hybrid system and turn the air conditioning system on to
check that the radiator cooling fans operate and to check for
coolant leaks from the radiator or hoses.
The fans operate when the temperature setting is adjusted to “L O” and
“A/C” switch ( ) is turned on immediately after a cold start. Co n-
firm that the fans are operating by checking the fan sound and air flow. If
it is difficult to check these, turn the “A/C” switch ( ) on and off
repeatedly. (The fans may not oper ate in freezing temperatures.)
If the fans are not operating:
Stop the hybrid system immediately and contact any authorized
Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer.
If the fans are operating:
Have the vehicle inspected at the nearest any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repaire r.

After stopping the hybrid system and waiting for 5 minutes or
more, start the hybrid system again and check if “Hybrid System
Overheated” is shown on the multi-information display.
If the message does not disappear:
Stop the hybrid system and contact any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repaire r.
If the message is not displayed:
The hybrid system temperature has dropped and the vehicle may
be driven normally.
However, if the message appears again frequently, contact any a utho-
rized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any rel iable
repairer.
WARNING
Q To prevent an accident or injury when inspecting under the hood of
your vehicle
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in serious injury such as burns.
O If steam is seen coming from under the hood, do not open the hood until
the steam has subsided. The engine compartment may be very hot.
O After the hybrid system has been turned off, check that the “Accessory”,
“Ignition ON” or mileage display ( P. 213) on the main display and the
“READY” indicator are off.
When the hybrid system is operating, the gasoline engine may au tomati-
cally start, or the cooling fans may suddenly operate even if t he gasoline
engine stops. Do not touch or approach rotating parts such as t he fan,
which may lead to fingers or clothing (especially a tie, a scar f or a muffler)
getting caught, resulting in serious injury.
O Do not loosen the coolant reservoir caps while the hybrid system and radi-
ator are hot.
High temperature steam or coolant could spray out.

If the vehicle becomes stuck
Set the parking brake and shift the shift position to P. Stop the
hybrid system.
Remove the mud, snow or sand from around the front wheels.
Place wood, stones or some other material under the front wheel s
to help provide traction.
Restart the hybrid system.
Shift the shift position to D or R and release the parking brak e.
Then, while exercising caution, depress the accelerator pedal.
Q When it is difficult to free the vehicle
Carry out the following procedures if the tires spin or the vehicle
becomes stuck in mud, dirt or snow:
