WARNING
QWhen driving the vehicle
ODo not drive if you are unfamiliar
with the location of the brake and accelerator pedals to avoid depressing the wrong pedal.
• Accidentally depressing the accel- erator pedal instead of the brake pedal will result in sudden accelera-
tion that may lead to an accident.
• When backing up, you may twist your body around, leading to a diffi-
culty in operating the pedals. Make sure to operate the pedals properly.
• Make sure to keep a correct driving
posture even when moving the vehicle only slightly. This allows you to depress the brake and accel-
erator pedals properly.
• Depress the brake pedal using your right foot. Depressing the brake
pedal using your left foot may delay response in an emergency, result-ing in an accident.
OThe driver should pay extra atten-tion to pedestrians when the vehicle
is powered only by the electric motor (traction motor). As there is no engine noise, the pedestrians
may misjudge the vehicle’s move- ment. Even though the vehicle is equipped with the Acoustic Vehicle
Alerting System, drive with care as pedestrians in the vicinity may still not notice the vehicle if the sur-
rounding area is noisy.
ODo not drive the vehicle over or
stop the vehicle near flammable materials such as leaves, paper or rags.
The exhaust system and exhaust gases can be extremely hot. These hot parts may cause a fire if there is
any flammable material nearby.
ODuring normal driving, do not turn off the hybrid system. Turning the hybrid system off while driving will
not cause loss of steering or brak- ing control, however, power assist to the steering will be lost. This will
make it more difficult to steer smoothly, so you should pull over and stop the vehicle as soon as it is
safe to do so. In the event of an emergency, such as if it becomes impossible to stop
the vehicle in the normal way:  P.500
OUse engine braking (downshift) to maintain a safe speed when driving down a steep hill.
Using the brakes continuously may cause the brakes to overheat and lose effectiveness. ( P.277)
ODo not adjust the position of the steering wheel, the seat, or the
inside or outside rear view mirrors while driving.Doing so may result in a loss of
vehicle control.
OAlways check that all passengers’
arms, head or other parts of their body are not outside the vehicle.
QWhen driving on slippery road surfaces
OSudden braking, acceleration and
steering may cause tire slippage and reduce your ability to control the vehicle.
OSudden acceleration, engine brak-ing due to shifting, or changes in
engine speed could cause the vehi- cle to skid.

OAfter driving through a puddle, lightly depress the brake pedal to
make sure that the brakes are func- tioning properly. Wet brake pads may prevent the brakes from func-
tioning properly. If the brakes on only one side are wet and not func-tioning properly, steering control
may be affected.
QWhen shifting the shift lever
ODo not let the vehicle roll backward while a forward driving position is selected, or roll forward while the
shift lever is in R. Doing so may result in an accident or damage to the vehicle.
ODo not shift the shift lever to P while the vehicle is moving.
Doing so can damage the transmis- sion and may result in a loss of vehicle control.
ODo not shift the shift lever to R while the vehicle is moving forward.
Doing so can damage the transmis- sion and may result in a loss of vehicle control.
ODo not shift the shift lever to a driv-ing position while the vehicle is
moving backward. Doing so can damage the transmis-sion and may result in a loss of
vehicle control.
OMoving the shift lever to N while the
vehicle is moving will disengage the hybrid system. Engine braking is not available with the hybrid system
disengaged.
OBe careful not to shift the shift lever with the accelerator pedal depressed.
Shifting the shift lever to a gear other than P or N may lead to unex-pected rapid acceleration of the
vehicle that may cause an accident and result in death or serious injury. Doing so can damage the transmis-
sion and may result in a loss of vehicle control.
QIf you hear a squealing or scrap-ing noise (brake pad wear indica-tors)
Have the brake pads checked and replaced by any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer,
or any reliable repairer as soon as possible.Rotor damage may result if the pads
are not replaced when needed. It is dangerous to drive the vehicle when the wear limits of the brake
pads and/or those of the brake discs are exceeded.
QWhen the vehicle is stopped
ODo not depress the accelerator pedal unnecessarily.
If the vehicle is in any gear other than P or N, the vehicle may accel-erate suddenly and unexpectedly,
causing an accident.
OIn order to prevent accidents due to
the vehicle rolling away, always keep depressing the brake pedal while stopped with the “READY”
indicator is illuminated, and apply the parking brake as necessary.
OIf the vehicle is stopped on an incline, in order to prevent acci-dents caused by the vehicle rolling
forward or backward, always depress the brake pedal and securely apply the parking brake as
needed.

OThe brake system consists of 2 or more individual hydraulic systems;
if one of the systems fails, the other will still operate. In this case, the brake pedal should be depressed
more firmly than usual and the braking distance will increase. Have your brakes fixed immediately.
QIf the vehicle becomes stuck
Do not spin the wheels excessively
when any of the tires is up in the air, or the vehicle is stuck in sand, mud, etc. This may damage the driveline
components or propel the vehicle for- ward or backward, causing an acci-dent.
NOTICE
QWhen driving the vehicle
ODo not depress the accelerator and brake pedals at the same time
during driving, as this may restrain the hybrid system output.
ODo not use the accelerator pedal or depress the accelerator and brake
pedals at the same time to hold the vehicle on a hill.
QAvoiding damage to vehicle parts
ODo not turn the steering wheel fully
in either direction and hold it there for an extended period of time.Doing so may damage the power
steering motor.
OWhen driving over bumps in the
road, drive as slowly as possible to avoid damaging the wheels, under-side of the vehicle, etc.
QIf you get a flat tire while driving
A flat or damaged tire may cause the
following situations.
OIt may be difficult to control your vehicle.
OThe vehicle will make abnormal sounds or vibrations.
OThe vehicle will lean abnormally.
Hold the steering wheel firmly and gradually depress the brake pedal to
slow down the vehicle.

QWhen encountering flooded roads
Do not drive on a road that has flooded after heavy rain, etc. Doing so may cause the following serious dam-
age to the vehicle:
OEngine stalling
OShort in electrical components
OEngine damage caused by water
immersion
In the event that you drive on a
flooded road and the vehicle is flooded, be sure to have any autho-rized Toyota retailer or Toyota autho-
rized repairer, or any reliable repairer check the following:
OBrake function
OChanges in quantity and quality of oil and fluid used for the engine,
hybrid transaxle (front and rear), etc.
OLubricant condition for the bearings and suspension joints (where possi-ble), and the function of all joints,
bearings, etc.
OComponents connected to the trac-
tion battery.
QWhen parking the vehicle
Always set the parking brake, and shift the shift lever to P. Failure to do so may cause the vehicle to move or
the vehicle may accelerate suddenly if the accelerator pedal is accidentally depressed.

QSudden acceleration/steering

Executing sharp turns when towing
may result in the trailer colliding
with your vehicle. Decelerate well in
advance when approaching turns
and take them slowly and carefully
to avoid sudden braking.
QImportant points regarding
turning
The wheels of the trailer will travel
closer to the inside of the curve
than the wheels of the vehicle. To
make allowance for this, take the
turns wider than you would nor-
mally do.
QImportant points regarding
stability
Vehicle movement resulting from
uneven road surfaces and strong
crosswinds will affect handling. The
vehicle may also be rocked by
passing buses or large trucks. Fre-
quently check behind when moving
alongside such vehicles. As soon
as such vehicle movement occurs,
immediately start to decelerate
smoothly by slowly applying the
brakes. Always steer the vehicle
straight ahead while braking.
QPassing other vehicles
Consider the total combined length
of your vehicle and trailer and
ensure that the vehicle-to-vehicle
distance is sufficient before execut-
ing lane changes.
QTransmission information
To maintain engine braking effi-
ciency, when using engine braking,
do not use the transmission in D.

QIf the hybrid system overheats
Towing a loaded trailer up a long,
steep incline in temperatures
exceeding 30°C (85°F) may result
in the hybrid system overheating. If
the high coolant temperature warn-
ing light indicates that the hybrid
system is overheating, turn the air
conditioning off immediately, leave
the road and stop the vehicle in a
safe place. (P.551)
QWhen parking the vehicle
Always place wheel chocks under
the wheels of both the vehicle and
trailer. Firmly set the parking brake
and shift the shift lever to P.
QBreak-in schedule
Toyota recommends that vehicles fitted
with new power train components
should not be used for towing trailers for
the first 800 km (500 miles).
QMaintenance
OMaintenance must be performed more
frequently when using the vehicle for
towing due to the greater weight bur-
den placed on the vehicle compared
to normal driving.
ORetighten all bolts securing the hitch-
ing ball and bracket after towing for
approximately 1000 km (600 miles).
QIf trailer sway occurs
One or more factors (crosswinds, pass-
ing vehicles, rough roads, etc.) can
adversely affect handling of your vehicle
and trailer, causing instability.

If the hybrid system is stopped with
the shift lever in a position other
than P, the power switch will not be
turned to OFF. Perform the follow-
ing procedure to turn the switch to
OFF:
1 Check that the parking brake is
set.
2 Shift the shift lever to P.
3 Check that “IGNITION ON” is
displayed on the multi-informa-
tion display and press the power
switch shortly and firmly.
4 Check that “ACCESSORY” or
“IGNITION ON” on the multi-
information display is off.

Do not stop the hybrid system when the shift lever is in a position other
than P. If the hybrid system is stopped in another shift lever position, the power switch will not be turned to

QS mode
OYou can choose from 6 levels of accelerating force and engine braking force.
OA lower shift range will provide greater accelerating force and engine braking
force than a higher shift range, and the engine revolutions will also increase.
OTo prevent the engine from over-rev-ving, upshifting may automatically
occur when the shift range is 3 or lower.
OWhen the shift range is 4 or lower, holding the shift lever toward “+” sets the shift range to 6.
QDownshifting restriction warning

To help ensure safety and driving per- formance, downshifting operation may
sometimes be restricted. In some cir- cumstances, downshifting may not be possible even when the shift lever or
paddle shift switches (if equipped) is operated. (A buzzer will sound twice.)
QIf the “S” indicator does not come on or the “D” indicator is displayed
even after shifting the shift lever to S
This may indicate a malfunction in the
transmission system. Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer immediately. (In this situation, the transmission will oper-
ate in the same manner as when the shift lever is in D.)

 Drive your vehicle only in areas
where off-road vehicles are per-
mitted to travel.
 Respect private property. Get
owner’s permission before enter-
ing private property.
 Do not enter areas that are
closed. Honor gates, barriers
and signs that restrict travel.
 Stay on established roads. When
conditions are wet, driving tech-
niques should be changed or
travel delayed to prevent dam-
age to roads.
WARNING
QOff-road driving precautions
Always observe the following precau- tions to minimize the risk of death, serious injury or damage to your vehi-
cle:
ODrive carefully when off the road. Do not take unnecessary risks by
driving in dangerous places.
ODo not grip the steering wheel
spokes when driving off-road. A bad bump could jerk the wheel and injure your hands. Keep both hands
and especially your thumbs on the outside of the rim.
OAlways check your brakes for effec-tiveness immediately after driving in sand, mud, water or snow.
OAfter driving through tall grass, mud, rock, sand, rivers, etc., check that there is no grass, bush, paper,
rags, stone, sand, etc. adhering or trapped on the underbody. Clear off any such matter from the
underbody. If the vehicle is used with these materials trapped or adhering to the underbody, a break-
down or fire could occur.
OWhen driving off-road or in rugged
terrain, do not drive at excessive speeds, jump, make sharp turns, strike objects, etc. This may cause
loss of control or vehicle rollover causing death or serious injury. You are also risking expensive damage
to your vehicle’s suspension and chassis.
NOTICE
QTo prevent the water damage
Take all necessary safety measures to ensure that water damage to the hybrid battery (traction battery),
hybrid system or other components does not occur.
OWater entering the engine compart-
ment may cause severe damage to the hybrid system.
OWater entering the hybrid transmis-sion will cause deterioration in transmission quality. The malfunc-
tion indicator may come on, and the vehicle may not be drivable.
OWater can wash the grease from wheel bearings, causing rusting and premature failure, and may
also enter the hybrid transaxle case, reducing the gear oil’s lubri-cating qualities.

QDoes your vehicle need repairs?
Be on the alert for changes in perfor-
mance and sounds, and visual tip-offs
that indicate service is needed. Some
important clues are:
OEngine missing, stumbling or pinging
OAppreciable loss of power
OStrange engine noises
OA fluid leak under the vehicle (How-
ever, water dripping from the air con-
ditioning system after use is normal.)
OChange in exhaust sound (This may
indicate a dangerous carbon monox-
ide leak. Drive with the windows open
and have the exhaust system checked
immediately.)
OFlat-looking tires, excessive tire
