CARE AND MAINT
ENANCE:

Your brake calip
ers hav
e a
painted finish. Imm
ediately
clean off any spilled brake fluid, wiping it off with a soft, clean terry-cloth towel.

Do not use any harsh chem
icals when cleaning your
calipers. W
ash your calipers
with soap and rinse with
water.

Do not use any harsh chem
icals when cleaning your rotor
hats (the black anodized center
part of the rotor assem
bly).
Wash your rotor hats with soap and rinse with water.

Breaking-in rotors and pads
is c
ritica
l to th
e optimum

perform
ance of your new brakes. W
hen braking-in new
parts, you are not only heat-cycling the pads, you are also depositing a layer of pad m
aterial
onto the ro
tor face. If not
broken-in properly, an uneven la
yer of pad m
aterial will be
deposited onto the rotor, causing vibration.

BIG BRAKE KIT
OWNERS MANUAL:
Congratulations on the purchase of your new TRD Big
Brake kit. Depending on how your vehicle is driven, your
brake pads and rotors may produce more “brake dust”
than the original front brakes. This dust may be seen on
the front wheels and is normal. It may be necessary to
clean your front wheels more often than before.

IN ORDER TO OBTAIN THE MAXIMUM

PERFORM
ANCE FROM YOUR NEW B
RAKE KIT,
THE FOLLOWING BREAK-
IN PROCEDURES ARE
RECOMMENDED.

NOTE: TRD DOES NOT ENDO
RSE SP

PUBLI
C ROADS; THEREFORE,
IF A SAF

E
“ALTERNATE BREAK-IN PROCEDURE” SECTION.

RECOMMENDED BREAK-IN PROCEDURE:

1. Read through the procedure a
nd find a suitable, safe and
legal area to perform
the necessary stops.

2. BEFORE
st
arting the break-in procedure, drive with
gentle b
raking. Do not use brakes ag

ing brake-in procedure.

3. Make a series of 10 stops from
60 to 5-10 MPH. At the
end of each stop, imm
ediately accelerate to 60 ag
ain for
the next stop. Run all stops
continuously in one cycle.
NOTE:
A moderate braking effort is
needed to properly break-
in the rotors and pads. A st
opping force of approxim
ately
0.8G’s, just short of ABS interv
ention, is the level of pedal
effort you are trying to attain.
4. During the 60 to 5-10 MPH series of stops, the exact speed is no
t critica
l. Acc
eler
ate to ap
proxim
ately 60
and begin the braking cycl
e. As you approach 5-10
MPH, it is n
ot necess
ary to watch th

Keep your eyes on the road and approxim
ate your
speed at the end of each cycle.

or the f
ollowing:
• On the 8th or 9th stop, there shou
ld be a distinct sm
ell from

the brakes.
Sm
oke m
ay be eviden
t during earlier stops as well.
• Also on the 8th or 9th stop, so
me friction m
aterials will
experience “green fade”. This is a slight fading of the brakes. The f
ade will stab
ilize, b
ut not
com
pletely go away until the
brakes have cooled. • Af
ter the b
reak-

e a blue tint
color on the rotor van

gray film
on the rotor face.
The blue tint indicates th

e p
roper break in
tem
perature and the gray
film
is
pad m
aterial starting to transfer
onto the roto
r face.

6. After the final stop, drive as m
uch as possible without
using the b
rakes to coo
l off the system. Ideally, the brakes
should be allowed to cool to
am
bient tem
perature before
using them
again.

NOTE: DO NOT COME

7. Af
ter the f

operating at optim
um
ca
pacity. A second or third heat
cycle is typ
ically n
ecess
ary before th
e brakes really start to
work optim
ally. This will occur during everyday use.

ALTERNATE BREAK IN PROCEDURE:

In the ev
ent that a safe drivi
ng area can not be used for the
dynam
ic break-in procedure, you m
ay also break-in the pads
and rotors using the following procedure:

Try to avoid abrupt, hard stops for the first 200 m
iles
(300 km
)

Avoid towing a tra
ile
r f
or th
e first 500 m
iles (800 km
)

Avoid any racing OR off-road
activities for the first 200
miles (300 km
)

Avoid repeated incline/dec
line braking for the first 200
miles (300 km
)
