USB connector
An auxiliary device, such as an iPodŸ
2, MP3
player or a USB flash drive can be connected
to the audio system via the connectors in the
center console storage compartment. A stand-
ard cable from an iPodŸ or MP3 player can be
routed under the cover to the connector(s) in
the storage compartment. If the device is being charged through a 12-volt
socket while it is connected to the AUX or port,
sound quality may be impaired.
A sound source must be chosen, depending on
the device that has been connected:
1.
Use MODE to select
iPod or USB. The textConnect device will be displayed.
2. Connect the device to the connector in the
center console storage compartment (see
the illustration).
The text
LOADING will be displayed while the
system loads the files (folder structure) on the
device. This may take a short time.
When information about the files (the folder
structure) on the device has been loaded, the
resulting list includes information on the artist,
genre and song title.
To navigate in the folder structure, press
ENTER and scroll up and down the folders
using the arrow buttons (on the audio system
control panel or on the steering wheel keypad).
Press the right arrow button to select a folder.
Press the left arrow button to go up a level in
the folder structure. Press ENTER to go down
a level in the folder structure.
Tracks can be selected in two ways:
Turn the Tuning knob (no. 4 in the illustra-
tion on page 252) clockwise or counter-
clockwise.

Use the right or left arrow keys on the nav-
igation control (no. 5 in the illustration on
page 252) to select the desired track. The
arrow keys on the steering wheel keypad
can also be used in the same way.
NOTE
•The system supports a number of
iPodŸ models produced in 2005 or later.
•In order to help avoid damage to the
USB socket, it will be switched off if
there is a short circuit or if the con-
nected device uses too much current
(which can happen if the device does
not comply with the USB standard). The
USB socket will reactivate the next time
the ignition is switched on if the problem
no longer exists. If the problem persists,
contact a trained and authorized Volvo
service technician.
USB flash driveTo simplify the use of a USB flash drive, it is
advisable to only store music files on the drive.
It will take considerably longer for the system

NOTE
The transmission oil does not normally need
to be changed during the service life of the
vehicle. However, it may be necessary to
replace the oil if the vehicle is often driven
in areas of sustained temperature extremes
(hot or cold), when towing a trailer over long
distances, for prolonged driving in moun-
tainous areas, or if the vehicle is often driven
short distances in temperatures under 40 °F
(5 °C).

279 Oil specifications
Engine oil must meet the minimum ILSAC
specification GF-4, API SL, or ACEA A1/B1.
Lower quality oils may not offer the same fuel
economy, engine performance, or engine pro-
tection.
Volume: 6.1 US qts (5.8 liters).
Volvo recommends Castrol.
Depending on your driving habits, premium or
synthetic oils may provide superior fuel econ-
omy and engine protection. Consult your Volvo
retailer or a trained and qualified Volvo service
technician for recommendations on premium
or synthetic oils.
Oil additives must not be used.
NOTE
Synthetic oil is not used when the oil is
changed at the normal service intervals.
This oil is only used at customer request, at
additional charge. Please consult a trained
and qualified Volvo service technician.
Oil viscosityIncorrect viscosity oil can shorten engine life
under normal use. SAE 5W-30 will provide
good fuel economy and engine protection. See
the viscosity chart.

Extreme engine operationSynthetic oils meeting SAE 0W-30 or 0W-40
and complying with oil quality requirements are
recommended for driving in areas of sustained
temperature extremes (hot or cold), when tow-
ing a trailer over long distances, and for pro-
longed driving in mountainous areas.

The API Service Symbol "donut" is divided into
three parts:
•The upper section describes the oil's per-
formance level.
•The center identifies the oil's viscosity.
•The lower section indicates whether the oil
has demonstrated energy-conserving
properties in a standard test in comparison
to a reference oil.

Technician certification
In addition to Volvo factory training, Volvo sup-
ports certification by the National Institute for
Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.). Certi-
fied technicians have demonstrated a high
degree of competence in specific areas.
Besides passing exams, each technician must
also have worked in the field for two or more
years before a certificate is issued. These pro-
fessional technicians are best able to analyze
vehicle problems and perform the necessary
maintenance procedures to keep your Volvo at
peak operating condition.
