WARNING
People with implanted pacemakers should not allow the pacemaker to come closer than9 inches (22 cm) to any of the keyless drivesystem's antennas. This is to help preventinterference between the pacemaker and thekeyless drive system.

Locking/unlocking – from the outside
The remote key (p. 144) is used to lock/unlock all of the doors and the trunk at the same time.Different settings for unlocking the vehicle canbe selected, see Remote key – functions(p. 147). Before the vehicle can be locked from the out- side with the remote key, the driver's door mustbe closed. If the trunk or any other door is open,it will be locked and the alarm will be armed.
NOTE
Be sure the remote key is outside of the vehi- cle before the other doors/trunk are closed tohelp avoid locking the remote inside the vehi-cle.
If the vehicle is equipped with the optional key- less drive system, all doors/trunk must be closedbefore the vehicle can be locked. The first press on the unlock button unlocks the driver's door and a second press unlocks theother doors and the trunk (see also remote keyand key blade (p. 144)). This setting can be changed in the menu system. See MY
CAR (p. 71) for a description.
If the locks repeatedly do not react when the unlock button is pressed, it may be necessary toreplace the battery in the remote, see Remote key – replacing the battery (p. 151). In this casethe vehicle can be unlocked with the detachablekey blade (p. 150).

Opening the trunk manually
The trunk is held closed by an electronic locking mechanism. To open:
1. Press lightly on the rubberized plate underthe handle to release the lock.
2. Lift the handle to open the trunk lid.
CAUTION
• When pressing the rubberized plate, only light pressure is necessary to release thetrunk's electronic locking mechanism.
• When opening the trunk lid, pull it upusing the handle. Too much pressure onthe rubberized plate can damage its elec-trical connections.
Locking the trunk with the remote key
–Press the lock button on the remote key. The alarm indicator on the dashboard will begin flashing to show that the vehicle is locked andthat the alarm has been armed.
NOTE
•
If the doors are locked while the trunk is open, the trunk will remain unlocked untilthe vehicle is relocked by pressing theLock button on the remote key.
• On keyless drive vehicles, the gear selec- tor must be in the Park (
P) position, all
doors and the trunk must be closed and the ignition must be switched off beforethe vehicle can be locked.
Opening the trunk from the inside (U.S. models only)
The vehicle is equipped with a florescent handle on the inside of the trunk lid, which can be usedin an emergency situation to open the trunk fromthe inside. Pull the handle down to release thetrunk lid. After use, the handle must be pushedback into its original position before the trunk canbe closed. This handle is not intended to be used to anchor the trunk lid when long loads are being transpor-ted.

Alarm – arming/disarming The alarm system provides a warning if an attempt is made to break into the vehicle.
Arming the alarm
–Press the Lock button on the remote key. One long flash of the turn signals will confirmthat the alarm (p. 162) is armed.

Disarming the alarm
–Press the Unlock button on the remote key.
> Two short flashes from the car's direction indicators confirm that the alarm has been deactivated and that all doors areunlocked.

Alarm signal
An audible (p. 162) signal is given by a battery powered siren. The alarm cycle lasts for 30 sec-onds.
The visual alarm signal is given by flashing all turn signals for approximately 5 minutes or untilthe alarm is turned off.

Alarm – turning off
The alarm system provides a warning if an attempt is made to break into the vehicle.
If the alarm is sounding, it can be stopped by pressing the Unlock button on the remote key orby inserting the remote key in the ignition slot.Two short flashes from the car's turn signals con-firm that the alarm has been turned off.

Alarm-related functions
The following is general information regarding the alarm system in your vehicle.
Automatic re-armingIf the doors are unlocked, the locks will automati- cally re-engage (re-lock) and the alarm will re-arm after 2 minutes unless a door or the trunkhas been opened.
Remote key not functioningIf the remote key is not functioning properly, thealarm can be turned off and the vehicle can bestarted as follows:
1. Open the driver's door with the key blade.
>This will trigger the alarm.
2. To turn off the alarm, insert the remote key
into the ignition slot (also on vehicles with the optional keyless drive). 3. Start the engine.

Starting the engine
The engine can be started/switched off using the remote key and the START/STOP ENGINE
button.

WARNING
Before starting the engine:
• Fasten the seat belt.
• Check that the seat, steering wheel and mirrors are adjusted properly.
• Make sure the brake pedal can bedepressed completely. Adjust the seat ifnecessary.
WARNING
•Never use more than one floor mat at a time on the driver's floor. Before driving,remove the original mat from the driver'sseat floor before using any other type offloor mat. Any mat used in this positionshould be securely and properly anchoredin the attaching pins. An extra mat on thedriver's floor can cause the acceleratorand/or brake pedal to catch. Check thatthe movement of these pedals is notimpeded.
• Volvo's floor mats are specially manufac-tured for your car. They must be firmlysecured in the clips on the floor so thatthey cannot slide and become trappedunder the pedals on the driver's side.
1. Press the remote key into the ignition slot as far as possible, with the metallic key blade pointing outward (not inserted into the slot) 1
.

Press and release the START/STOP
ENGINE button. The autostart function will
operate the starter motor until the engine starts or until its overheating function stopsit. The starter motor operates for a maximum of 10 seconds. If the engine has not started,repeat the procedure.
CAUTION
If the engine does not start after the third try, wait for approximately 3 minutes before tryingto start it again to give the battery time torecover its starting capacity.
NOTE
Keyless drive *
To start a vehicle equipped with the keyless drive feature, one of the remote keys must bein the passenger compartment. Follow theinstructions in steps 2 and 3 to start the vehi-cle.

WARNING
•Always remove the remote key from the ignition slot when leaving the vehicle and ensure that the ignition in mode
0 (see
Ignition modes (p. 74) for information about the ignition modes).
• On vehicles with the optional keylessdrive, never remove the remote key fromthe vehicle while it is being driven ortowed.
• Always place the gear selector in Parkand apply the parking brake before leav-ing the vehicle. Never leave the vehicleunattended with the engine running.
• Always open garage doors fully beforestarting the engine inside a garage toensure adequate ventilation. The exhaustgases contain carbon monoxide, which isinvisible and odorless but very poisonous.
NOTE
•After a cold start, idle speed may be noticeably higher than normal for a shortperiod. This is done to help bring compo-nents in the emission control system totheir normal operating temperature asquickly as possible, which enables themto control emissions and help reduce the vehicle's impact on the environment 3
.
CAUTION
• When starting in cold weather, the auto- matic transmission may shift up at slightlyhigher engine speeds than normal untilthe automatic transmission fluid reachesnormal operating temperature.
• Do not race a cold engine immediatelyafter starting. Oil flow may not reachsome lubrication points fast enough toprevent engine damage.
• The engine should be idling when youmove the gear selector. Never accelerateuntil after you feel the transmissionengage. Accelerating immediately afterselecting a gear will cause harsh engage-ment and premature transmission wear.
• Selecting
P or N when idling at a stand-
still for prolonged periods of time will helpprevent overheating of the automatictransmission fluid.

Switching off the engine Switch off the engine by pressing the
START/

If the gear selector is not in the P position or if
the vehicle is moving, press the START/STOP
ENGINE button twice or press and hold it in until
the engine switches off.

If the gear selector is in the D or R positions and the car is not moving, engine speed (rpm) will be lower and it will take longer for the engine to reach normal operating temperature.

•In an emergency the parking brake can be applied when the vehicle is moving byholding in the control. Braking will beinterrupted when the accelerator pedal isdepressed or the control is released.
• An audible signal will sound during thisprocedure if the vehicle is moving atspeeds above 6 mph (10 km/h).

• For safety reasons, the parking brake is only released automatically if the engine isrunning and the driver is wearing a seatbelt.
• The electric parking brake will be releasedimmediately when the accelerator pedal ispressed and the gear selector is in posi- tion
D or R.

Move the gear selector to position D or R
and press the accelerator pedal. The parking brake will release when the vehicle begins tomove.
Heavy load uphill
A heavy load, such as a trailer, can cause the vehicle to roll backward when the parking brakeis released automatically on a steep incline. Tohelp avoid this:
1. Keep the electric parking brake lever pushed in with the left hand while shifting into Drive with the right.
2. While pressing the accelerator pedal to pull away, release the parking brake lever onlyafter the vehicle begins to move.

Towing the vehicle Always check with state and local authorities before attempting to tow another vehiclebecause this type of towing is subject to regula-tions regarding maximum towing speed, lengthand type of towing device, lighting, etc.
1. With the remote key fully pressed into theignition slot 14
, press START/STOP ENGINE
for approximately 2 seconds to activate igni- tion mode II.
2. The remote key must remain in the ignition slot15
for the entire time that the vehicle is
being towed.
3. Keep the tow rope taut when the towing vehicle slows down by applying light pressure on the brake pedal. This will help prevent jar-ring movements of the vehicle being towed.
4. Be prepared to apply the brakes to stop the vehicle being towed.
CAUTION
General towing precautions:
• Please check with state and local author- ities before attempting this type of tow-ing, as vehicles being towed are subjectto regulations regarding maximum towingspeed, length and type of towing device,lighting, etc.
• If the vehicle's battery is dead, see Jumpstarting (p. 255) to provide current forreleasing the electric parking brake and to move the gear selector from the
P
position to N. If this is not possible, see
Transmission – shiftlock override (p. 261) for information about manually overridingthe shiftlock system to move the gear selector from P to N.
• Maximum speed: 50 mph (80 km/h). Do not exceed the maximum allowable tow-ing speed.
• Maximum distance with front wheels onground: 50 miles (80 km).
• The vehicle should only be towed in theforward direction.

Attaching the towing eyeletThe towing eyelet is located under the floor of the trunk. This eyelet must be screwedinto the positions provided on the right sidesof either the front or rear bumper (see illus-tration).
There are two different types of covers over the openings for the towing eyelet and theyhave to be opened differently.
• If the cover has a notch, insert a coin, etc.,into the notch and pry open the edge ofthe cover. Open the cover completely andremove it.
• If the cover has a mark along one edge orin a corner, press the mark while pryingout the opposite side/corner using a coin,etc. Open the cover and remove it.
Screw the towing eyelet in place, first by handand then using the tire iron until it is securely inplace. After the vehicle has been towed, the eyelet should be removed and returned to its storagelocation. Press the cover for the attachment point back into position.
WARNING
• When the vehicle is being towed, the igni- tion should be in mode
II (in mode I, all of
the vehicle's airbags are deactivated). For more information, see Ignition modes(p. 74)
• Never remove the remote key from theignition slot when the vehicle is beingtowed. For vehicles with keyless drive, theremote key must remain inside the vehi-cle.
• The power brakes and power steering willnot function when the engine is not run-ning. Approximately 5 times more pres-sure will be required on the brake pedaland the steering wheel will be considera-bly harder to turn.
• The towing eyelets must not be used forpulling the vehicle out of a ditch or forany similar purpose involving severestrain.

Towing by tow truck
When necessary, call for professional help from an authorized towing company. Volvo recom-mends the use of flat bed equipment.
CAUTION
In certain conditions, the towing eyelet may be used to pull the vehicle onto aflatbed tow truck.
• The vehicle's position and ground clear-ance determine if it can be pulled up ontoa flatbed tow truck using the towing eye-let.
• If the angle of the tow truck
