Charging cable temperature monitoringTo help ensure the vehicle's hybrid battery is reliably charged each time it is connected,charging is stopped if the temperature in thecharging cable becomes too high and rea-ches a critical limit.
CAUTION
If charging is often inadvertently interrup- ted, have the charging cable and the vehi-cle's charging system inspected by atrained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian.

Opening and closing the charging socket cover
The cover for the hybrid battery's charging socket opens manually.
Press in the rear edge of the charger door and release.
Open the door.
Perform the following steps in reverse to close the charger door.

Initiating hybrid battery charging
The hybrid battery is charged by connecting a charging cable between the vehicle and a120/240 V outlet (alternating current). Only use the charging cable supplied with the car or a replacement cable recommended byVolvo.
CAUTION
Never connect the charging cable if there is a risk of a thunderstorm or there is light-ning.

3922. The charging cable handle will lock into
place and charging will begin within
5 seconds. When charging starts, thegreen LED light in the charging socket willbegin to flash. The approximate remainingcharging time or the charging status willbe displayed in the instrument panel. Charging may be temporarily interrupted if the vehicle is unlocked:
and a door is open
‒ charging will
restart within a few minutes.
if no door is opened
‒ the vehicle will
automatically relock. Charging willresume after 1 minute.
CAUTION
Never detach the charging cable from the 120/240 V outlet (AC, alternating current)while charging is in progress – the120/240 V outlet could be damaged insuch circumstances. Always interruptcharging first and then disconnect thecharging cable – first from the vehicle'scharging socket and then from the120/240 V outlet.
During charging, condensation from the air conditioning may form under the vehicle. Thisis normal and is caused by the hybrid batterycooling.

The charging status is indicated by an LED light in the charging socket.
Location of the LED indicator light in the vehicle's charging socket.
The LED indicator light shows the current charge status during charging. If the LED indi-cator light is not illuminated, check to makesure the cable is securely connected in thewall outlet and in the outlet in the vehicle. Awhite, red or yellow light illuminates when thepassenger compartment lighting is activatedand will remain illuminated for a short timeafter the passenger compartment lighting hasgone out.

The red and blue lights in the charging mod- ule indicate the status of ongoing and com-pleted charging.
Charge module: 1. Red warning light, 2. Blue status indicator
When the charge module is initially plugged into a wall outlet, the red warning light willflash once to indicate that a startup safetycheck has been performed. When the safetycheck has been completed, the blue statusindicator will glow steadily and the red warn-ing light will be off. The charger is now readyto be used. If the red warning light continuesto flash or glows steadily, a fault has beendetected and the charger will not deliverpower to the vehicle. Contact a Volvo retaileror a certified Volvo service technician. When the charging cable is connected to thevehicle's charging socket, the blue light willflash once. Charging cable connected to the vehicle's charging socket:

Charging status in the instrument panelCharging status is indicated in the instrument panel using both graphics and messages. This information is displayed as long as theinstrument panel is active.
Graphic Message
Meaning
Fully charged at: [Time] displayed along with an animated blue
pulsing light through the charging cable. Charging is in progress and the approximate time at which the battery will be fully charged is displayed.
Charging complete is displayed. An image will be superimposed
over the graphic of the vehicle with a green LED indicator light in the socket. The battery is fully charged.
Charging error will be displayed. The LED indicator light in the
charging socket will be red. Malfunction. Make sure the charging cable is correctly con- nected to the vehicle's charging socket and to the120/240 V outlet (alternating current).

CAUTION
When starting in cold weather, the automatic transmission may shift up atslightly higher engine speeds than nor-mal until the automatic transmissionfluid reaches normal operating tem-perature.
Do not race a cold engine immediatelyafter starting. This could prevent fluidsfrom properly lubricating vital compo-nents in the engine before it hasreached the proper operating tempera-ture.
The engine should be idling when thegear selector is moved. Never acceler-ate until the gear is fully engaged.Accelerating rapidly before a gear isproperly engaged could lead to harderwear of components.
To help prevent the transmission oilfrom overheating, select
P or N when
idling at a standstill for prolonged peri-ods of time.
NOTE
With a cold start, idling speed may be con- siderably higher than normal for certainengine types. This is done to get the emis-sions system up to normal operating tem-perature as quickly as possible, which min-imizes exhaust emissions and protects theenvironment.

Switching off the vehicle
The vehicle can be switched off using the start knob in the tunnel console.
Start knob in the tunnel console.
To switch off the vehicle:
–Turn the start knob clockwise and release to switch off the vehicle. The control willautomatically return to the original posi-tion.
If the vehicle rolls:
–Turn clockwise and hold the knob until the vehicle switches off.

The vehicle's ignition can be put in various modes (levels) to make different functionsavailable.
Selecting an ignition mode

– Unlock the vehicle and
keep the remote key in the passenger compartment.

To set level I or II without engine start –
do not depress the brake pedal (or clutch
pedal for vehicles with manual transmis- sion) when selecting this ignition mode.

Brake functions
The vehicle's brakes are used to reduce speed or prevent the vehicle from rolling.
In addition to the wheel brakes and parking brakes, the vehicle is also equipped with anumber of automatic brake assist functions.These systems provide assistance by e.g. thedriver not needing to depress the brake pedalat a traffic light, when starting up a hill orwhen driving down a hill. Depending on how the vehicle is equipped, the following brake assist functions may beincluded:

Brakes
The brake pedal is used to apply the vehicle's regular brakes, which are part of the brakesystem.
The vehicle is equipped with two brake cir- cuits. If one brake circuit is damaged, thebrake pedal will go down further whendepressed. More pressure will then berequired from the driver for normal brakingeffect.
WARNING
The power brakes only work when the electric motor or combustion engine is run-ning.
If the brake pedal is used when the engine is switched off, greater pressure must be appliedto brake the vehicle. In very hilly areas or when driving with a heavy load, gear position B can be used to augment
the brakes with engine braking. Use the Off Road drive mode to increase the engine braking effect when driving on steepdowngrades at low speeds.
Anti-lock brakesThe vehicle is equipped with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS 2
), which helps prevent
the wheels from locking and helps maintain steering control when braking. Vibrations may

408be felt from the brake pedal when ABS is operating, which is normal. After the vehicle is started, a brief test of the ABS system is automatically performed whenthe driver releases the brake pedal. An addi-tional automatic test of the system may beperformed when the vehicle is traveling at alow speed. During the test, the brake pedalmay feel as though it is pulsating.
Light braking charges the hybrid
battery
When the brakes are applied lightly, the elec-tric motor braking function is used. This con-verts the vehicle's kinetic energy into electricalenergy, which is used to charge the hybridbattery. When the battery is being chargedwith the electric motor braking function, thiswill be indicated in the instrument panel.When the battery is being charged with the electric motor braking function, this will be indicated in theinstrument panel.
This function is active at speeds in the range of 150-5 km/h (93-3 mph). When braking atspeeds outside of this range, or during harderbraking, the hydraulic braking system is usedto augment braking. This is indicated in theinstrument panel with the pointer down in thered area.

If the brake fluid has fallen below theMIN
level in the brake fluid reservoir,
the vehicle should not be driven untilthe brake fluid has been filled. The rea-son for the brake fluid loss must bechecked.

Brake Assist System The brake enhancing system, (BAS 3
), helps
increase braking force and can thereby reduce braking distance.
The system monitors the driver's braking hab- its and increases braking force when neces-sary. Braking force can be increased up to thepoint at which the ABS intervenes. The func-tion is deactivated when pressure on the brakepedal is decreased.

Braking on wet roadsProlonged driving in heavy rain without brak- ing may cause braking effect to be slightlydelayed the first time the brakes are applied.
This may also occur after washing the vehicle. It will then be necessary to apply greater pres-sure to the brake pedal. You should thereforemaintain a greater distance to the vehicleahead. Firmly apply the brakes after washing the vehicle or driving on wet roads. This helpswarm up the brake discs, enabling them to drymore quickly and protecting them against cor-rosion. Consider the current traffic situationwhen braking.

Braking on salted roads
When driving on salted roads, a layer of salt may form on the brake discs and brake pads.
This could increase stopping distance. Main- tain an extra large safety distance to the vehi-cle ahead. Make sure to also:
Apply the brakes from time to time to helpremove salt. Make sure braking does notpose a risk to any other road users.
Gently apply the brakes when you havefinished driving and before driving again.

Maintenance of the brake system
Regularly check the brake system compo- nents for wear.
To keep the vehicle as safe and reliable as possible, follow the Volvo service schedulespecified in the Warranty and MaintenanceRecords Information booklet. After replacingbrake pads and brake discs, braking effect isnot adapted until they are "broken in" by driv-ing a few hundred kilometers (miles). Com-pensate for the reduced braking effect byapplying greater pressure to the brake pedal.Volvo recommends only using brake padsapproved for your Volvo.
CAUTION
The brake system's components should be regularly checked for wear. Contact a workshop for advice on how to do this or let a workshop perform theinspection - an authorized Volvo workshopis recommended.
