Important information
A WARNING
Refer to the chapter Driving Safely
¢ page 126, Driving safety for important
information, tips, suggestions and warn­
ings that you should read and follow for
your own safety and the safety of your pas­ sengers.
The safety belts and the airbag system con
only provide maximum protection if the front
seats ore correctly adjusted.
There are various ways of adjusting the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the driver and the front passenger. Adjust
your seat properly so that :
- you can easily and quick ly reach all the
switches and controls in the instrument
panel
- your body is properly supported thus reduc­
ing physical stress and fatigue
- the safety be lts and airbag system can offer
maximum protection
¢ page 146.
In the following sections, you will see exactly
how you can best adjust your seats .
There are special regulations and instructions
for installing a child seat on the front pas­
senger's seat. Always follow the information
regarding chi ld safety provided in
¢ page 169, Child Safety.
A WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the driver and
all other passengers can result in serious
personal injury.
- Always keep your feet on the floor when
the vehicle is in motion -never put your
feet on top of the instrument panel, out
of the window or on top of the seat cush­ ion. This applies especially to the passen-

gers. If your seating position is incorrect,
you increase the risk of injury in the case
of sudden braking or an accident. If the
airbag inflates and the seating position is incorrect, this could result in pe rsonal
injury or even death.
- It is important for both the driver and
front passenger to keep a distance of at
least 10 inches (25 cm) between them­
selves and the steering wheel and/or in­
strument panel. If you're sitting any
closer than this, the airbag system can­
not protect you properly. In addition, the
front seats and head restraints must be
adjusted to your body height so that they
can give you maximum protect ion.
- Always try to keep as much distance as
possible between yourself and the steer­
ing wheel or instrument panel.
- Do not adjust the driver's or front pas­
senger's seat whi le the vehicle is moving.
Your seat may move unexpectedly, caus­
ing sudden loss of veh icle control and
personal injury. If you adjust your seat
while the veh icle is moving, you are out
of posit ion.
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving .
We recommend that you adjust the dr iver's
seat in the follow ing manner:
"" Adjust the seat in fore and aft direction so
that you can easily push the pedals to the
floor wh ile keeping your knees slightly bent

"" Adjust the backrest so that when you sit
w ith your back against the backrest, you can
still hold the top of the steering wheel.
""For adjustab le head restra ints: adjust the
head restraint so the uppe r edge is as even
as possible with the top of your head. If that
is not possible , try to adjust the head re­
straint so that it is as close to this position ..,_

combinat ion of safety equipment.

If there are passengers in the rear seat, fold
the head restraints up on the occupied seats
at least to the next notch

Adjusting the head restraints
• To move the head restraint up, hold it at the
sides with both hands and slide it upward
until you feel it click into place.
• To move the head restraint down, press the
button @<=>

straint downward.
Removing the head restraints
To remove the head restraints, the backrest
must be folded forward partially .
• Remove the screwdriver from the vehicle
tool kit

head restraint upward as far as it can go

Installing the head restraints
To install the head restraints, the backrest
must be folded forward partially.
• Release the backrest
c:> page 66.
• Slide the posts on the head restraint down
into the guides until you feel the posts click
into place. You should not be able to pull
the head restraint out of the backrest.
• Fold the backrest down until it latches se­
curely

_& WARNING
- Only remove the rear seat head restraints
when necessary in orde r to install a child
seat. Install the head restraint again im­
mediately once the child seat is removed.
Driving with the head restraints removed
or head restra ints not in the highest po­
sition increases the risk of serious injury.

page 130 .

-Torn or frayed safety belts can break, and
belt anchors can break dur ing a coll is ion.
Check the safety belts regularly. Safety
belts w ith noticeable damage to the
webbing, bind ings, buckles or retractors
must be replaced.

- If you
move the front seat back when the
rear seat backrest is folded forward, you
could damage the head restra ints on the
rear seat. If necessary, remove the rear
seat head restraint before mov ing the
front seat back
- Make sure the safety belt is not pinched
in the backrest lock and damaged when
the rea r seat backrest if fo lded back.
Other objects should be
r emoved from
the rear bench seat to protect the rear backrest from damage .

Due to the laws of physics, even small objects
that are loose in the vehicle can become heavy
projectiles and cause serious injuries during a
coll is ion. Objects in the ve hicle increase in ki­
netic energy, which varies depending on the
vehicle and the we ight of the object. The vehi­
cle speed is the most important factor in this .
Example: In a frontal impact at a speed of
30 mph (48 km/h), the weight of a 10 lb (5 kg) object increases to approximately

20 times its normal weight due to the forces
acting upon it. This means the weight of the
object is suddenly equivalent to approximate ­
ly 200 lb (90 kg). It is easy to imagine the
type of injuries an object of that weight could
cause if it slides through the passenger com­ partment unrestrained during a collision at a
relat ively low speed.
A WARNING
Weak, damaged or faulty straps used to
secure objec ts to the tie-downs can fail
during heavy braking or a co llision and
l ead to serious injuries.
-A lways use s uitable straps and secure
objects to the tie -downs in the luggage
compartment to prevent objects from
shifting and sliding forward .
- Never secure a child seat restraint to a tie -down .
- Because of their load capaci ty, the hooks
should only be used to secure ob jects
that weig h a maximum of 10 lb
(5 kg).
Heavy objects wilt not be secured suffi­
ciently, and this increases the risk of in­
jury.

This chapter contains important information,
tips, instructions and warnings that you need
to read and observe for your own safety, the
safety of your passengers and others . We have
summarized here what you need to know
about safety belts, a irbags, ch ild restra ints as
well as child safety. Your safety is for us
priori­
ty number 1.
Always observe the info rmat ion
and warn ings in th is sect ion -fo r yo ur own
safety as well as that of your passengers .
The information in this se ction app lies to all
model ve rsions of your veh icle . Some of the
feat ures described in this sec tions may be
standard equipment on some models, or may
be optional equipment on others . If you are
not sure, ask your authorized Audi dealer.
A WARNING
- Always make sure that you follow the in­
struct ions and heed the WARNINGS in
this Manual. It is in your interest and in
the inte rest of you r passengers.
- Always keep the complete Owner's Liter­
ature in your Audi when you lend or sell
yo ur vehicle so that this important info r­
mation will always be ava ilable to the
dr iver and passengers.
- Always keep the Owner's literature handy
so that you can find i t eas ily if you have
ques tions.
- Always adjust your speed to the weather
traffi c and conditions. Follow the speed
limits.

Safety equipment
The safety features are part of the occupant
restraint system and work together to help
reduce the risk of injury in a wide variety of
accident situations.
Your safety a nd the safety of your passengers
shou ld not be left to chance . Advances in
tec hno logy have made a variety of features
ava ilable to help reduce the r is k of injury in an
a cciden t. T he following is a lis t of just a few of
the safety features in yo ur Audi:

- safety b elt pretens ioners,
- safety belt force lim iters fo r the front seats,
- front airbags,

t h ey a re not always cor re ct ly adjusted and co r­
re ct ly used .

Important things to do before driving
Safety is everybody 's job! Vehicle and occu­
pant safety always depends on the informed and careful driver .
For your safety and the safety of your passen­
gers,
before driving always:
.. Make s ure that all lights and signa ls are op­
erating correctly .

What impairs driving safety?
Safe driving is directly related to the condi­
tion of the vehicle , the driver as well as the
driver's ability to concentrate on the road
without being distracted.
The driver is responsible for the safety of the
vehicle and all of its occupants. If your ability
to drive is impaired, safety r isks for everybody
in the vehicle increase and you a lso become a
hazard to everyone else on the road

.,. Do not let you rself be dist racted by passen­
gers or by us ing a cellular telephone .
.. NEVE R dr ive when yo ur dr iv ing ability is im­
paired (by medicat ions, alcohol, drugs, etc.).
.. Observe all traffic laws, ru les of the road
and speed limits and plain common sense.
.. ALWAYS adjust your speed to road, traffic
and weather conditions .
.. Take frequent breaks on long trips. Do not
drive for more than two hours at a stretch.
.. Do NOT drive when you are t ired, under
pressure or when you are stressed .
A WARNING
Impaired driving safety increases the risk
of serious personal injury and death when­
ever a veh icle is being used.

The proper driver seating position is impor­
tant for safe, relaxed driving .

For your own safety and to reduce the risk of
injury in the event of an accident, we recom­
mend that you adjust the driver's seat to the
follow ing position:
.. Adjust the driver's seat so that you can easi ­
ly push the pedals all the way to the floor
wh ile keeping your knee(s) slightly bent

.. Adjust the angle of the seatback so that it is
in an upr ight position so that your back
comes in full contact w ith it when you drive.

A WARNING
Drivers who are unbelted, out of position
or too close to the airbag can be seriously
injured by an airbag as it unfolds. To help
reduce the risk of serious personal injury:
- Always adjust the driver's seat and the steering wheel so that there are at least
10 inches (25 cm) between your breast­
bone and the steering wheel.
- Always adjust the driver's seat and the
steering wheel so that there are at least
4 inches (10 cm) between the knees and
the lower part of the instrument panel.
- Always hold the steering wheel on the
outside of the steering wheel rim with
your hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock
positions to help reduce the risk of per­
sonal injury if the driver's airbag inflates.
- Never hold the steering wheel at the
12 o'clock position or with your hands at
other positions inside the steering wheel
rim or on the steering wheel hub. Hold­
ing the steering wheel the wrong way
can cause serious injuries to the hands,
arms and head if the driver's airbag in­
flates.
- Pointing the steering wheel toward your face decreases the ability of the supple­
mental driver's airbag to protect you in a
collision .
- Always sit in an upright position and nev­
er lean against or place any part of your
body too close to the area where the air­
bags are located.
- Before driving, always adjust the front
seats properly and make sure that all
passengers are properly restrained. -
For adjustable head restraints: before
driving, always also adjust the head re­
straints properly.
- Never adjust the seats while the vehicle
is moving. Your seat may move unexpect­
edly and you could lose control of the ve­ hicle .
- Never drive with the backrest reclined or
tilted far back! The farther the backrests
are tilted back, the greater the risk of in­
jury due to incorrect positioning of the safety belt and improper seating posi­
tion .
- Children must always ride in child seats

Proper seating position for the front
passenger
The proper front passenger seating position
is important for safe, relaxed driving.
For your own safety and to reduce the risk of
injury in the event of an accident, we recom­
mend that you adjust the seat for the front
passenger to the following position:
• Adjust the angle of the seatback so that it is
in an upright position and your back comes
in full contact with it whenever the vehicle is
moving.
• For ad justab le head restra ints: adjust the
head restraint so the upper edge is as even
as possible with the top of your head. If that
is not possible, try to adjust the head re ­
straint so that it is as close to this position

the front passenger seat.

Front seat passengers who are unbelted,

instrument panel.
- Each passenger m ust always s it on a seat
of the ir own and properly fasten and
wea r the safety belt be long ing to that
seat .
- Before driv ing, a lways adjust the front
passenger seat properly .
- For adjustable head restraints : before
dr iv ing, always a lso adjust the head re­
straints properly .
- Always keep your feet on the f loor in
front of the seat . Never rest them on the
seat, instrument panel, out of the win­
dow, etc. The airbag system and safety
belt w ill not be ab le to protec t you prop ­
e rl y and can even incre ase the ris k of in ­
jury in a crash .
- Never drive wi th the backrest recl ined o r
t il ted far bac k! T he farther the backrests
are t ilted back , the greater the ris k of in ­
jury d ue to incorrect positioning of the
safety belt and improper seating posi­
t ion.
- Children must always ride in child seats

rect seating posit ion in the event of a sudde n
braking maneuver or an accident, your pas ­
sengers on the rear bench sea t must always
obse rve the following:

The head restraints must be correctly adjust­
ed to achieve the best protection .
.. Adjust the head restr aint so the upper edge
is as even as possible with the top of your
head. If that is not possible, try to adjust
the head restraint so that it is as close to

A WARNING
All seats are equipped with head re­
straints. Dr iving without head restraints or
with head restraints that are not properly
adjusted increases the risk of serious or fa­
t al neck injury dramat ically. To help reduce
the risk of injury:
- Always drive with the head restra ints in
place and properly adjusted.
- Every person in the veh icle must have a
properly adjusted head restra int.
- Always make sure each person in the ve­
hicle properly adjusts the ir head re­
straint. Adjust the head restraint so the
upper edge is as even as possible wit h
the top of your head.
If that is not possi­
ble, try to adjust the head restra int so that
it is as close to this posit ion as pos­
sible. Move the head restraint so that it
is as close to the back of the head as pos­
sible .
- Never attempt to adjust head restraint
while driving. If you have driven off and
must adjust the driver headrest for any reason, first stop the vehicle safely be­
fore attempting to adjust the head re­
straint .
- Ch ildren must always be prope rly re­
strained in a child restraint that is appro­
p ria te for their age and size

Examples of improper seating positions
The occupant restraint system con only re­
duce the risk of injury if vehicle occupants ore
properly seated .
Improper seating positions can cause serious
injury or death. Safety belts can only work
when they are properly positioned on the body . Improper seating positions reduce the
effect iveness of safety belts and wi ll even in­
crease the risk of injury and death by moving
the safety be lt to critica l areas of the body .
Imprope r seating positions a lso increase the
risk of serious injury and death when an air­
bag deploys and strikes an occupant who is
not in the proper seating position . A dr iver is
responsible for the safety of all veh icle occu­
pants and espec ially for children . T herefore :
.. Never allow anyone to assume an incorrect
seating position when the vehicle is being
used

The following bulletins list only some sample
pos itions that will increase the risk of serious
injury and death . Our hope is that these exam ­
ples will make you more aware of seat ing po­
s itions that are dangerous.
Therefore, whenever the vehicle is
moving:
- never stand up in the vehicle
- never stand on the seats
- never kneel on the seats
- never ride with the seatback reclined

Always wear safety belts!
Wearing safety belts correctly saves lives!
This chapter explains why safety be lts are nec ­
essary, how they work and how to adjust and
wear them correctly .
.. Read a ll the information that fo llows and
heed all of the instructions and WARNINGS.
A WARNING
Not wearing safety belts or wearing them
improperly increases the risk of ser ious
personal in jury and death .
- Safety belts are the sing le most effective
means avai lab le to reduce the risk of se­
r ious injury and dea th in a utomob ile acci­
dents. For your protection and that of
yo ur passenge rs, always co rrectly wear
safety belts when the vehicle is moving.
- Pregnant women, injured, or physically
im paired perso ns m ust also use safety
belts. Lik e all veh icle occup ants, they are
more like ly to be ser iously injured if they
do not wea r safety be lts . The best way to
protect a fetus is to protect the mother -
throughout the entire pregnancy.
Number of seats
Your Audi has a total of four seating positions: two in the front and two in the rear. Each seat­
ing position has a safety belt .
A WARNING
Not wearing safety belts or weari ng them
improp erly increases th e risk of ser ious
pe rsonal i njury and deat h.
- Never st rap more than one pe rson, in­
cl uding small ch ild ren, into any belt.
It is
e speci ally dange rous to pla ce a safety
belt over a child s itting on yo ur lap.
