-Depending on vehicle equipment, the in ­
str ument ill umination (need les and gauges)

i gnition is sw itched on. The illumination for
the gauges reduces automat ically and even­
tua lly turns off as brightness outside in­
creases. This function reminds the driver to
turn the low beams on at the app ropr iate
time.

Coolant temperature indicator
The coolant temperatu re display (D ¢ page 10,
fig. 4 or ¢ page 10, fig . 3 only funct ions when
the ignition is switched on . To prevent engine
damage, please observe the following notes
about the temperature ranges.
Cold range
If onl y the L EDs at the bottom o f th e ga uge turn
on, the engine has not reached operating tem­ pe rature yet. Avoid high engine speeds, full ac ­
cele rat ing and heavy engine loads.
Normal range
The engine h as reached its oper ating temper a­
ture once the LEDs up to the center o f the ga uge
turn on. If
the . indicator lig ht in the instru-
~ ment cluster display turns on, the coolant tern-
~ perature is too high ¢ page 28 .

-Auxi liary headlights and other accessories in
front of the coo ling-air intake impai r the
cooling effect of the coolant. This increases
the risk of the engine overheating dur ing
hig h outside temperatures and heavy en­
gine load .
-The front spoiler a lso helps to distribute
cooling air correctly while driving. If the
spoiler is damaged, the coo ling effect will
be impaired and the r is k of the eng ine ove r­
heating wi ll increase. See an autho rized

ci lity for assis tan ce .
-Vehicles without a coolant temperature dis­
play: to promote a long engine service li fe,
avoidin g high engine speeds, full accelera­
tion and heavy engine loads during approx i­
mately the first 15 minutes when the en ­
gine is cold is recommended. The amount of
time that the eng ine is cold depends on the
outside temperature .

Cockpit over view
The brake booster remains active for a br ief peri­
od of time after switching off the ignition. To se­
cure the vehicle from ro lling away, move these­
lector lever in the P position or set the parking
brake.
A WARNING
- Read and follow the warnings in
¢ page 316, Working in the engine com­
partment
before open ing the hood and
check ing the b rake fl uid level.
- If the bra ke system indicator light does not
tu rn off o r it t urns on while driv ing, the
bra ke fluid level in the reservoir is too low ,
and this inc reases the risk of an acc iden t.
Stop the vehicle and do not continue dr iv ­
ing. See an authorized Audi dealer or au­
tho rized Audi Service Facility for ass istance .
- If the bra ke sys tem indicator light turns on
together with the ABS and ESC indicator
lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function may
be malfunctioning. Functions that stabilize
the vehicle are no longer ava ilable. This
could cause the rear of the ve hicle to
swerve, which increases the risk that the ve­ hicle will slide . Do not continue driving . See

Driving
_& WARNING
-Never turn off the engine before the vehicle
has come to a complete stop. The full func­
t ion of the brake booster and the power
steering is not guaranteed. Yo u must use
more force to turn or brake. Because you
cannot steer and brake as you usually
would, this could lead to accidents and ser i­
ous injuries.
- Never remove the ignit ion key from the ign i­
tion lock while the vehicle is moving. Other ­
wise, the steering lock cou ld sudden ly en­
gage and you would not be able to steer the
vehicle.
- Always take the key with you whenever you
leave your vehicle. Otherw ise, the engine
could be started or electrical equipment
suc h as the power windows could be operat­
ed . This can lead to serious injury.
- For safety reasons, always park the vehicle
with the selector lever in the P position .
Otherwise, there is the r isk that the vehicle
could roll unintentionally.
(D Note
If the engine has been under heavy load for
an extended per iod of t ime, heat builds up in
the engine compartment after the engine is
sw itched off and there is a risk of damaging
the engine. For this reason, let the engine run
for at idle for approximately two minutes be­
fore shut ting it off.
(0 Tips
For up to 10 minutes after stopping the en­
gine, the rad iator fan may turn on again auto­
matically or it may continue to run (even if
the is ignition switched off) due to the follow­
ing reasons:
- The coolant temperature is increasing due
to trapped heat.
- If the engine is warm and the engine com­
partment also heats up from strong sun ­
light.

Starting the engine

If you would like to switch the ignition on with­
out starting the engine, follow these steps:

Vehicle transport
Applies to: vehicles with plug-in hybr id drive
The following contains information you should
know about transporting your vehicle.
The MQB-A high-voltage lithium-ion battery sys­
tem equipped in your vehicle is composed of SA­
NYO 12 UF 261 591 high -voltage batteries and
has passed test 38.3 in accordance with the UN
Tests and Criteria handbook. The vehicle may be
transported with the high-voltage battery instal­
led as conventional class 9 hazardous materials
without additional official consent for air and sea
shipment (current law !CAO-TI and IMDG-Code
01.01.2012).
Jump starting
Applies to: ve hicles with plug -in hybrid drive
The term "vehicle battery" refers to the 12 Volt
battery in your vehicle.

The vehicle is equipped with one vehicle battery
and one high-voltage battery .
If the vehicle battery is drained, it can be charged
with a charger or you can jump start the vehicle
using another vehicle's battery in the same way
as a conventional vehicle.

Lights
Check to make sure both vehicle and trailer lights
are working p roperly.
Safety chains
Be sure trailer safety chains are properly connect ­
ed from the tra iler to the hitch on the vehicle.
Leave enough slack in the chains to permit turn­
in g corners . When you install safety cha ins, ma ke
sure they w ill not drag on the road when yo u are
driving .
The chains shou ld cross under the trailer tongue
to prevent it from dropping in case of separat ion
from the hitch.
Driving instructions
Driving with a trailer always requires extra care
and consideration.
Weight distribution
Towing a loaded trailer w ith an empty car results
in a highly unstable distribution of weight . If this
cannot be avo ided, drive at very low speeds only
to avoid the risk of losing steering control.
A "balanced" rig is easier to operate and control.
This means that the tow vehicle should be loaded
to the extent possible and permissible, while
keep ing the tra iler as light as possib le under the
circumstances. Whenever possib le, t ransfer
some cargo to the luggage compartment of the
tow vehicle whi le observing tongue load require­
ments and vehicle loading considerations .
Speed
The higher the speed, the more difficult it be­
comes for the driver to control the rig. Do not
drive at the maximum permissible speed. Reduce
your speed even more if load, weather or wind
conditions are unfavorable
-particu larly when
going downhill.
Reduce vehicle speed
immediately if the trailer
shows the s lightest sign of swaying .
Do not try
to stop the swaying by accelerating.
Tra iler towing
Observe speed limits. In some a reas, speeds for
vehicles towing trailers are lower than for regular
vehicles .
Always apply brakes early. When driving down­
hill, shift into a lower gear to use the engine
braking effect to slow the vehicle. Use of the
brakes alone can cause them to overheat and fa il.
Coolant temperature
T he coo lant tempe rature gauge ~ page 11 must
be observed carefully . The coolant temperature
can increase if you drive on long inclines in a low
gear at high engine speeds. Reduce your speed
immediately if the LEDs in the top part of the dis­
play turn on.

A WARNING ,-
Anyone not properly restrained in a moving
vehicle is at a much greater risk in an acci­
dent. Never let anyone ride in your car who is
not properly wearing the restraints provided
by Aud i.
Trailer towing
information
Important to know
Your vehicle handles differently when towing a
trailer because of the addit ional weight and dif­
ferent weight distribution . Safety, performance
and economy will g reatly depend on how careful­
ly you load your trailer and operate yo ur rig.
Before you actually tow your trailer, pract ice
turning, stopping and backing up in an area away
from traffic. Keep practic ing until you have be­
come complete ly familiar w ith the way your vehi­
cle-trailer combination behaves and responds.
Backing up is difficult and requires practice.
Backing up with a t railer genera lly requires steer ­
i ng action opposite to that when backing up your
vehicle without a tra iler.
Maintain a greater distance between your vehicle
and the one in front of you. You will need more

Catalytic converter
The vehicle may o nly be driven with unleaded
g a soline, otherwise the catalyt ic converter will be
destroyed.
Never d rive until the tank is completely empty .
The irregular supp ly of f uel that results from t hat
can cause engine m isfi res. Uncombusted fuel will
ente r the exhaust sys tem, w hich can ca use ove r­
heating and damage to the catalyt ic converter .
& WARNING
The tem perature of the ex ha ust system is
high, both when driving and after stopping
the engine.

- Never touch the exha ust ta il pipes once t hey
have become hot. This could result in burns.
- Do not park your vehicle over flammable
materials such as g rass or leaves because
the h igh temperat ure of the emiss ions con­
trol system cou ld start a f ire.
- Do not apply underbody protectant in the
exhaust system area, because this increases
t h e risk of fire.

· Working in the engine compartment
Special care is required if you are working in the
engine compartment
For work in the engine compartment, such as
checking and fill ing fluids , the re is a risk of in­
jury, scalding, accidents , and burns. For this
reason, follow all the warnings and general
safety precaut ions provided in the following in ·
formation . The engine compartment is a dan­
gerous area.

& WARNING
To reduce the ris k of injur ies, comp lete the
following steps before opening the hood:
- Tur n the engine off.
- S witch the igni tion off.
- Set the park ing brake.
- Move the selector lever into t he P position.
- Never ope n the hood when there is steam o r
coo lant escaping from the engine compart­
ment, because there is a risk that yo u could
be burned . Wait unt il no steam or coolant is
escapi ng.
- L et the eng ine cool down .
- Keep children away from the eng ine com-
pa rtment .
- Never sp ill fluids on a hot engine . These flu­
ids (such as the anti-freezing agent con­
tained in the coolant) ca n ignite.
- Avoid short c ircuits in the electrical system.
- When working in the engine compa rtment,
remember that the radiator fan can switch
on even if t he ignition is switched off, wh ich
increases the r is k of persona l injury.
- Never open the cap on the coolant expan­
sion tank when the engine is warm . The
coo ling syste m is under p ressure.
- To protect your face, hands, and a rms from
hot steam or coolant, cover the cap with a
large cloth when opening .
- Do not remove the engine cover under any
circumstances . Th is i ncreases the risk of
burns .

A WARNING

coolant escaping from the engine compart­
ment, because there is a risk that yo u could
be bu rned. Wait unt il no steam or coolant is
escaping.
- For safety reasons, the hood m ust always be
closed securely while driv ing. Because of
this, always c heck the hood after closing it
to make sure it is latched correctly. The
hood is latched if the front corners cannot
be lifted.
- If you notice that the hood is not latched while you are driving, stop immediate ly and
close it, because driving when the hood is
not latched increases the risk of an accident.
- If the hood is not latched comp letely, it
could f ly up while you are driving and ob­
struct your vision.
