When locking the vehicle with the centra l locking
switch, the fo llowing applies :
- Open ing the doors and the l uggage compart­
ment lid from the
outside i s not possib le for se­
curity reasons , such as when stopped at a light.
- T he L ED in the cent ral lock ing switch turns o n
when a ll doo rs a re closed and locked.
- Front doo rs: you can open the doors indiv idual­
ly from the ins ide by p ulling the doo r hand le.
- Rear doors*: pu ll on the door hand le

u nlock the door. Pull on the doo r hand le

to open t he door.
- In the event of a crash w ith airbag dep loyment,
the doors un lock automatically to a llow access
to the vehicle .
A WARNING
-Read and following all warnings ¢.& in De­

- The powe r locking sw itch works w ith the ig ­
nition off and a utomatically locks the entire
vehicle when
the [@] button is p ressed.
- T he centra l locking switc h is inoperative
when the vehicle is locked from the o utside .
- L ocked doors make it mo re difficult for
emergency worke rs to get into the vehicle,
which puts lives at risk. Do not leave anyone
behind in the vehicle, especially children.

cally moves all the way forward. When the seat
is moved back, it will stop in its orig inal posi­
tion. The operation will stop if the button is
pressed again .
If you press and ho ld the button @whi le the
back rest is in the upright posit ion, the seat will
move unt il you release the button .
A WARNING
-Always make sure the front seats are up­
r ight and securely locked in place.
-
- Power entry assistance also works when the
ign it ion is switched offll or when the igni­
tion key is removed , so that rear seat pas­
senge rs can still move to the front of the ve­
hicle in an emergency s ituation. To reduce
the r isk of injury, childre n should never be
left unattended in the vehi cle for this rea­
son.
Front center armrest
Applies to vehicles with a front center armrest
There is a storage compartment under the arm­
rest.

sition, raise it out of the top notch and fold it
back down .
The armrest can slide forwa rd and ba ck .

~ Then push the arm against the beverage con­
tainer so that the arm lies closely against it.
~ To close the cup holders, push them back into
the slot.
A WARNING
-
- Do not put any hot beverages in the cup
holder while the vehicle is moving . Hot bev ­
erages could spill, wh ic h increases the risk
of injury.
- Do not use any breakable beverage contain­
ers (for example, made out of glass or por­ celain). You cou ld be injured by them in the
event of an accident .
CD Note
Beverage containers in the cup holders should
always have a lid. If not, beverages could sp ill
and cause damage to vehicle equipment, such
electronics or seat covers.

A WARNING
-No heavy or hard objec ts may be p laced on
the storage compartment behind the rear seat backrest . There is a risk of injuring the
veh icle passengers when braking sudden ly .
- Always keep the glove compartment lid
closed while dr iv ing to red uce the risk of in­
jury.
- On ly use the storage compartments in the
door trim panels to store sma ll objects that
will not stick out of the compartment and impair the range of the side airbags.
- The bag hooks can ho ld a maximum weight
of 6.6 lbs (3 kg). Heavier objects are not ad­
equate ly secured. There is risk of personal
in jur y.

Applies to: vehicles with garment hooks
- Ma ke sure that t he view to the rear is not
obs truc ted by hanging ga rments.
- H ang only lightweight clothing and be sure
that the re are no heavy o r sharp-edged ob­
jec ts in the po ckets.
- Do not use coat hangers to hang t he cloth­
i n g beca use this could impair the effective­
ness o f the side curtain airbags .
CD Note
Objects on the rear she lf that rub against the
r ear window can d amage the rear w indow

Driving
When not being used, a roof rack should be re­
moved to decrease the wind resistance of the ve­
hicle. This will save you approximately 12% fuel
at speeds from 62
-75 mph (100 -120 km/h).
Save energy
The engine drives the generator, which generates
electricity; the fuel consumption also increases
with the demand for electricity. Therefore, switch
electrical equipment
off when you no longer
need it. Examples of equipment that uses a lot of
energy are air blowers at a high setting, the rear
window defogger and seat heating* .
(D Note
-Do not leave engine idling unattended after
starting. If warning lights should come on
to indicate improper operation, they would
go unheeded. Extended idling also produces
heat, which could result in overheating or
other damage to the vehicle or other prop­ erty.
- Have your vehicle maintained properly and
in accordance with the service recommenda­
tions in your Warranty
& Maintenance book­
let . Lack of proper maintenance as well as
improper use of the vehicle will impair the
function of the emission control system and
could lead to damage.
- Do not alter or remove any component of
the Emission Control System unless ap­
proved by the manufacturer.
- Do not alter or remove any device, such as
heat shields, switches, ignition wires,
valves, which are designed to protect your
vehicle's Emission Control System and other
important vehicle components.
@ Tips
The consumpt ion estimates as published by
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY
(EPA) and Transport Canada may not corre­
spond to your actual consumption on the
road, which will vary depending upon vehicle
load and speed, road and weather conditions,
trip length, etc.

Steering
Adjusting the steering wheel position
The steering wheel position is fully adjustable up
and down and forward and back.

.. Bring the steering wheel into the desired posi­
tion.
.. Push the lever against the steering column un­
til it is secure.
A WARNING
Incorrect use of the steering wheel adjust­
ment and an incorrect seating position can
cause serious injuries.
- Only adjust the steering column when the veh icle is stationary so that you do not lose
control of the vehicle.

-Adjust the driver's seat or steer ing wheel so
that there is at least 10 inches
(25 cm) dis­
tance between your chest and the steering
wheelr::!>page250, fig. 217. If you do not
maintain this distance, the airbag system
will not be able to provide its full protec­ tion.

- If your physical characteristics prevent you
from sitting at least 10 inches
(25 cm) or
more away from the steering wheel, see if
an authorized Audi dealer or authorized
Audi Service Facility can provide adapters that will help.
- If your face is level with the steering wheel,
the airbag does not provide as much protec­
tion during a collision. Always make sure
that the steering wheel is level with your
chest.

-Always hold the steering whee l with your
hands in the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posi­
tions to reduce the risk of injury if the airbag
deploys.
- Never hold the steer ing wheel in the 12
o'clock position or with both hands on the
rim or the center of the steer ing wheel.
Holding the steering wheel incorrectly s ig­
nificantly increases the risk of in jury to the
hands, arms and head if t he a irbag dep loys.
Starting and stopping
the engine (vehicles with an ignition lock)
Starting the engine

The ignition is switched on and the engine start­
ed with the key in the ignition .

Switching the ignition on /off
• To switch the ign ition on, turn the ign ition key
to posit io n
CI) . Vehicles without the Start/Stop
system*: the needle in the tachometer moves
into the
READY position.
• To switch the ign ition off, turn the ignit io n key
to posit ion @. The needle in the tachometer
moves into the
OFF position .
Starting the engine
• Press the brake pedal and move the se lector
lever to the "P" or "N" position.
• Turn the key briefly to position @. The ignition
~ key automatically returns to position CI) . Do not
~ press the acce lerato r pedal when doing this .

Drivi ng
Equipment that uses a lot of e lectricity is switch­
ed off temporarily when you start the engine .
If the engi ne does not start immediately , stop
the starting p rocedure by turning the ign it ion key
to posit ion @ and repeat after 30 seconds .
Start/Stop system*
See the information in Q page 79 , Start/Stop
system.
_&. WARNING
- T o redu ce the r is k of po iso ning, never allow
t he engi ne to run in confined sp aces.
- Never remove the ignition key from the ig ni­
t ion lock while the vehicle is moving. Other ­
wise the steer ing lock will engage and yo u
will not be ab le to steer the vehicle, which
increased the risk of an acc ident.
(D Note
Avo id high engine s peed, fu ll th rottle, and
heavy engine load i f th e e ngine has not
reached operating temperat ure yet . You could
damage the eng ine .
@ For the sake of the environment
Do not let the engine run w hile parked to
warm up. Beg in driving immediate ly . Th is re­
d uces unnecessary emissions.
@ Tips
- If it is d ifficult to turn the key to pos ition
CI) , turn the steering wheel back and forth
slightly to release t he steering whee l lock .
- S ome noise after start ing the e ngine is no r­
ma l and is no cause for co ncern.

-Due to t he interlinking o f various vehicle sys­
tems, critica l driving situations can be detected
by
pre sense ba sic and meas ures for preventa ­
t ive occ upant protection are can be initiated.
- The
pre sense front uses the data from the ra ­
dar sensors and calc ulates the probab ility of an
acc ident
c::> page 124. An impending collision
with vehicles ca n be detected within the limits
of the system . In this case, the system warns
the driver v isually, acoustically and with a je rk
on the brakes if necessary. If needed, it ca n ini ­
tiate a part ia l o r full dece le ra tion to reduce the
co llision speed o r to avo id t he coll is io n unde r
ce rtain c ircumstances. In conjunc tion wi th pre
sense basic, the front safety belts are a lso re ­
versib ly tensioned w hen needed . The pre sense
front is a lso active when adaptive cruise con­
trol* is sw itched off.
A WARNING
Also follow the genera l instructions fo und in

- Certain pre sense f unctions switch off when
d riving in reverse.
- The pre sense functions may not be avai la­
b le if there is a ma lfunction in the ESC sys­
tem or the airbag contro l modu le.
- Note t hat the revers ible belt tensioner on
t h e front passe nger's side deactivates w hen
the front passe nger's a irbag is deact ivated .
- Switch the pre sense off when you are not
us ing public streets or whe n loadi ng the ve­
h icle onto a veh icle carrier, train, ship or
othe r type of t ransportation . T his can pre­
vent a n un des ired intervent ion from the pre
sense sys te m .
Audi pre sense basic

Ass istance systems
- Tensioning o f the safety belts (for examp le,
during heavy braking) : the front safety belts
have revers ib le be lt tens ione rs . If a collision
does not occu r, the safety belts loosen slig htly
and are ready to tr igger aga in.
- Initiat ing the clos ing of the w indows and the
panorama g lass roof* (for examp le when un­
der- or oversteering).
Audi drive select*: the trigger times are adjusted depending on the mode selected .

Description
Wi thin the lim its of t he sys tem and depending
on the sit uat ion and spee d, p re sense front can
warn you about impending collisions with sta ­
t iona ry, stopped, and moving vehicles and ini ­
tiate app ropr iate braking measu res.

Early warning /acute warning
The system can provide visual and audible warn­
ings when dangerous situations are detected.
The
early warning may occur if:
- a vehicle driving ahead brakes st rong ly,

record, in certain crash or near crash -like situa ­
tions, such as an airbag deployment or hitting a
road obstacle, data that will assist in understand ­
ing how a vehicle's systems performed. The EDR
is designed to record data re lated to vehicle dy­
namics and safety systems for a short period of
time, typically 30 seconds or less . The EDR in this
veh icle is designed to record such data as:
- How various systems in your vehicle were oper­
ating;
- Whether or not the driver and passenger safety
belts were buckled/fastened;
- How far (if at all) the driver was depressing the accelerator and/or brake pedal; and,
- How fast the vehicle was traveling.
These data can help provide a better understand­
ing of the circumstances in which crashes and in ­
juries occur. NOTE: EDR data are recorded by your
vehicle only if a non-trivia l crash situation occurs;
no data are recorded by the EDR under normal
driving conditions and no personal data (e.g.,
name, gender, age, and crash location) are re­
corded . H owever, other parties, such as law en­
forcement, could combine the EDR data with the
type of personally identifying data routinely ac­
quired during a crash invest igation .
To read data recorded by an EDR, special equip­
ment is required, and access to the vehicle or the
E DR is needed. In addition to the vehicle manu­
facturer, other parties, such as law enforcement,
that have the specia l equipment, can read the in­
formation if they have access to the vehicle or the
EDR.
Aud i w ill only access the EDR and/or sim ilar data
or give it to others with the consent of the owner
or lessee or in accordance with applicable law.
States vary in their access/disclosure restrictions
for EDR data, but typically such data can be ac­
cessed/disclosed in the following c ircumstances :
- when the vehicle owner (or lessee if the vehicle
has been leased) agrees; or
- upon the officia l request by the police; or
- up on the order of a court of law or a govern-
ment agency; or
- for the defense of a lawsu it through the judicial
dis covery process.
Intelligent Technology
-Audi may also use the data, once retrieved from
the vehicle under permissib le circumstances, in
an anonymous format.
- for research about vehicle operation and safety
performance or provide the data to a third par­
ty for such research purposes.
Vehicle control modules
Your vehicle is also equipp ed w ith a number of
electronic control modules for various vehicle
systems, such as engine management, emission
control, airbags, and safety belts.
Th ese elect ronic control modules record data
during norma l vehicle operation that may be
needed by trained technicians for diagnostic and
repair purposes. The recording capabi lity of these
modules is limited to data (no sound is record­
ed) . Only a small amount of data is actually re­
corded over a very limited period of time, or stor­
ed when a system fault is detected by a control
module . Some of the data stored may relate to
vehicle speed, direction, or braking, as well as re­
straint system use and performance in the event
of a crash. Stored data can also only be read and
down loaded with specia l equipment that is di­
rectly connected to the vehicle .
