Setting the distance

~ To increase or reduce the distance by incre­
ments, tap the switch again to the left or
right. The distance between the two veh icles
will change in the instrument cluster d is­
play.
When approaching a moving vehicle up ahead,
the adaptive cru ise cont rol system brakes to
matc h that object's speed and then maintains
the stored d istance. If the vehicle ahead ac ­
celerates, adaptive cruise control will also ac ­
celerate up to the stored speed.
The highe r the speed, the greater the distance

Depending on the driving situation and the
how the vehicle ahead is dr iving, the actual
distance may be more or less than these tar­
get distances .

when traveling at 62 mph (100 km/h), or a

when traveling at 62 mph (100 km/h), or a
time interva l of 1.3 seconds .

when traveling at 62 mph (100 km/h), or a
time interval of 1.8 seconds.

A WARNING
Following other vehicles too closely in­
creases the risk of collis ions and ser ious
personal injury .
- Sett ing short distances to the traffic
ahead reduces the time and distance
availab le to bring your vehicle to a safe
stop and makes it even more necessary
to pay close attention to traffic.

good judgment, and select a safe follow­

weather conditions .

What can Audi braking guard do?
When detected in time, the system can assess
situations when a veh icle ahead brakes s ud­
denly or if your own vehicle is t raveling at a
high speed and approac hing a ve hicle up
ahead that is movi ng mo re sl ow ly. B raking
guard does not reac t if it cannot detec t the
s ituation.
The system advis es yo u of various s ituations:
- The
distance wa rning is given if yo u are too
close to the vehicle ahead for a long time. If
the vehicle ahead bra kes sharply , yo u will
not be ab le to avoid a collision . The ind icator
light

- The
approach warning is given when a de­
tected ve hicle up ahead i n your lane is mov­
ing m uch mo re sl owly than you are or if i t
brake s sh arp ly. W hen t his war ning is g iven,
it may on ly be poss ible to avoi d a co llision

- If a co llision is imminent, the system will
first provide an
acute warning by bri efly and
sharp ly app ly ing the brakes .
- If you do not react to the ac ute warning ,
braking guard can brake within the limits of
the system. This reduces the veh icle speed
in the event of a collision.
- At speeds under 20 mph (30 km/h), the sys ­
tem can in it iate a complete deceleration
s hortly before a collision .

- If the braking guard senses that you are not
braking hard enough when a collision is im­
minent, it can increase the braking force.
Which funct ion s can be contr oll ed ?
You can switch braking guard and the dis­
tance/approach warning on or off in the radio
or MM I c> poge 106, Settings in the radio/
MMI.
A WARNING
Lack of attention can cause col lisions, oth­
er accidents and serious personal injuries.
The braking guard is an assist system and
cannot prevent a collis ion by itself. The
driver must always intervene . The driver is
always responsib le for bra king at the cor­
rect time.
- Always pay close attention to traffic,
even when the brak ing guard is switched
on. Be ready to intervene and be ready to
take complete control whenever necessa­
ry. A lways keep the safe and legal dis­
tance between your vehicle and vehicles
up ahead.
- Braking guard works w ith in limits and
will not respond outs ide the system lim­
its, for example when approaching a
stopped vehicle or stationary obstacle
(end of a traff ic jam or veh icle that has
broken down in traffic).
- Always remember that the radar sensor
for the braking guard works only within
defined detection and range limits that

may prevent the proper detection of oth­
er vehicles.
- The radar sensor's function and range
can be reduced by rain, snow and heavy
spray. Moving veh icles up ahead may not
be prompt ly detected or may not be de­
tected at all .
- Reflective surfaces including crash barri­
ers or tunne l entrances may impair the
function of the radar sensor .

- You can cancel the braking that is in it iat­
ed by the system by braking yourse lf, by
accelerating not iceably or by swerving .

- Keep in mind that brak ing guard can
brake unexpectedly. Always secure any
cargo or objects that you are transport­
ing to reduce the risk of damage or in­
jury .

-Sensors have dead spaces in which ob­
jects cannot be detected. Be especially
alert for small children and animals,
since they are not always detected by the
sensors.
- The acoustic park ing system is not a sub­
st itute for the driver 's own caut ion and
alertness. U ltimate responsibi lity always
remains with the driver during parking
and simi lar maneuvers . Always watch
where you are driving.
- You should always adjust the vo lume and
frequency of the warning tones so that
yo u can easily hear the acoustic distance
warning even if the radio is p laying, the
air-cond itioner blower is on High or there
is a high level of outside noise .
- Check the settings whenever anyone else has driven the vehicle before you.

-Remember that low obstacles for wh ich
a warn ing has already been iss ued may
"dive" below the system's sensing zone if
the veh icle is being backed up closer. In
th is case, the warn ing sound shutting off
does
not i ndicate that you have cleared
the obstacle . Instead, impact is immi­
nent.
- Objects such as trailer hitches, chains,
narrow posts or fences covered by a th in
l ayer of paint may not always be detect­
ed by the system. They can still damage
your vehicle without warning.

Keep the sensors in the rear bumper clean
and free of snow and ice so that the acous­
tic parking assist system can function
properly.

122 Park assist
In the MMI display, the direction of travel
of the vehicle rear is represented depend­ing on the steering wheel angle. The vehi­
cle front swings out more than the vehicle
rear. Maintain plenty of distance from an
obstacle so that your outside mirror or a
corner of your vehicle does not collide with
any obstacles -danger of accident!
@ Tips
The left or right orientation lines and sur­
faces will be displayed, depending on the turn signal being used.
Adjusting the display and warning tones

- The warning tones can also be adjusted
directly from the rear view camera im­
age. Simply press the Settings* control
button.
- Changed settings are activated when
parking assist is switched on again.
Error messages
Applies to vehicles: with parking system (rear, with rear
view camera)

If a warning tone is audible for about five sec­
onds when you turn on the ignition, there is a
malfunction in the system. Have the problem
corrected by your authorized Audi dealer.
Keep the sensors in the rear bumper clean and
free from ice so that the acoustic park assist system can function properly.

Important safety instructions about
safety belts
Safety belts must always be correctly posi­
tioned across the strongest bones of your
body.
,.. Always wear safety belts as illustrated and
described in this chapter.
,.. Make sure that your safety belts are always
ready for use and are not damaged.
A WARNING
Not wearing safety belts or wearing them
improperly increases the risk of serious
personal injury and death. Safety belts can
work only when used correctly .
- Always fasten your safety belts correctly
before driving off and make sure all pas­
sengers are correctly restrained.
- For maximum protection, safety belts must always be positioned properly on
the body .
- Never strap more than one person , in­
cluding small children, into any belt.
- Never place a safety belt over a child sit­ ting on your lap.
- Always keep feet in the footwell in front
of the seat while the vehicle is being driv­
en .
- Never let any person ride with their feet on the instrument panel or sticking out
the window or on the seat.
- Never remove a safety belt while the ve­
hicle is moving. Doing so will increase
your risk of be ing injured or killed.
- Never wear belts twisted.
- Never wear belts over rigid or breakable
objects in or on your clothing, such as
eye glasses, pens, keys, etc., as these
may cause injury.
- Never allow safety belts to become dam­
aged by being caught in door or seat
hardware .
- Do not wear the shoulder pa rt of the belt
under your arm or otherwise out of pos i­
tion . -
Several layers of heavy clothing may in­
terfere with correct positioning of belts
and reduce the overall effectiveness of
the system .
- Always keep belt buckles free of anything
that may prevent the buckle from latch­
ing securely .
- Never use comfort clips or devices that
create slack in the shoulder belt . Howev­
er, special clips may be required for the
proper use of some child restraint sys­
tems .
- Torn or frayed safety belts can tear, and
damaged belt hardware can break in an
accident. Inspect belts regularly .
If web­
bing, b indings, buck les, or retractors are
damaged, have belts replaced by an au ­
thorized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop.
- Safety belts that have been worn and
loaded in an accident must be replaced
with the correct replacement safety belt
by an authorized Audi dealer. Replace­
ment may be necessary even if damage
cannot be clearly seen . Anchorages that
were loaded must also be inspected.
- Never remove, modify, disassemble, or
try to repair the safety belts yourself.
- Always keep the belts clean. Dirty belts
may not work properly and can impair
the function of the inert ia reel

Automatic safety belt retractors
Every safety belt is equipped with an automat­
i c belt retractor on the shoulder be lt. T his fea­
ture locks the belt when the belt is pulled out
fast, during hard braking and in an accident.
The belt may also lock when you drive up or
down a steep hill or through a sharp curve. During normal driving the belt lets you move
freely.
Safety belt pretensioners
The safety belts are equipped with a belt pre­
tensioner that helps to tighten t he safety belt
and remove s lack when the pretensioner is ac­
tivated. The function of the pretensioner is monitored by a warning light¢
page 20 .
Switchable locking feature
Every safety belt except the one on the driver
seat is eq uipped with a switchable locking fea­
ture that
must be used when the safety belt is
used to attach a child safety seat . Be sure to
read the important information about this
feature¢
page 176.

- Safety belts offer optimum protection
only when the seatback is upright and

belts are proper ly positioned on the
body.
- Always make sure that the rear seat
backrest to which the center rear safety
be lt is attached is securely latched when­
ever the rear center safety belt is being
used. If the backrest is not securely latched, the passenger w ill move for­
ward with the backrest during sudden
braking, in a sudden maneuver and espe­
cially in a crash .
- Never attach th e safety belt to the buck­
le for another seat . A tt ach ing the belt to
t he wrong buckle will reduce s afety be lt
effectiveness and can cause ser ious per­
sonal injury.
- A passenger who is not properly restrain­
ed can be seriously injured by the safety
be lt itself when it moves from the stron­
ger parts of the body into cr itical areas
like the abdomen.
- Always lock the convertible locking re­
tractor when you are securing a child safety seat in the vehicle
¢ page 178.
Safety belt position
Correct belt position is the key to getting
maximum protection from safety belts.

Engine compartment
Be especially careful when cleaning the en­
gine compartment.

Plenum panel
Remove leaves from the plenum pane l in front
of the windshield under the engine hood. This
prevents the water drain holes from becoming
blocked, and it prevents debris from entering
the vehicle interior through the heating and
ventilation ducts .
Corrosion protecti on
The engine compartment and transmission
have been corrosion-protected at the factory.
Good anti-corrosion treatment is very impor ­
tant, particular ly in the winter . If the vehicle
is frequent ly driven on salt treated roads, the
entire engine compartment and plenum panel
should be thoroughly cleaned at the end of
winter and retreated to prevent sa lt damage.
At the same time, the underside of the vehicle
should be washed as we ll.
If the engine compartment is cleaned at any
time with grease removing solut ions
1>, or if
you have the engine washed , the anti-corro­
sion treatment is a lmost always removed as
well.
It is therefore essential to have a long­
lasting co rrosion protection reapp lied to a ll
surfaces, seams, joints and components in the
engine compartment.
A WARNING
Be aware: The engine compa rtment of any
motor vehicle is a potentially hazardous
area.
- Before working in the engine compart­
ment, be s ure to read the in format ion
c:> page 219.
- Before reaching into the front plenum
pane l, always remove the ignition key.

Otherwise, the windshield wiper system
could un intentionally be sw itched on,
possibly caus ing personal injury from the
mov ing wiper linkage .
- Never reach into the area around or
touch the rad iator fan. The aux iliary fan
is temperature controlled and can sw itch
on suddenly - even when the ignition is
off.
- Do not wash, wax or dry the eng ine with
the engine running . Moving or hot parts
could injure you.
- Do not clean the underside of the chas­
sis, fenders, wheel covers, or other ha rd
to reach pa rts without protect ing your
hands and arms . You may cut yourself on
sharp-edged metal parts .
- Always read and heed all WARNINGS and
o ther info rmation
