The
II (USA models)/ m (Canada models) in­
d icator light monitors the safety systems (e .g .
a ir bags, pretensioners) and illuminates for a
few seconds each time you switch the ignition
on.
If the
ffl (USA models)/ EI (Canada models)
indicator light does not go out, or if it illumi­
nates whil e you are driv ing, or if it sta rts to
b link , then there is a malf unction somewhere
in the system. If the light does not illuminate
when you switch the ignition on, this also
means there is a ma lfunction.
A WARNING
If you have a malfunction in the safety sys­
tems, contact your authorized Audi dealer
immediately . Otherwise the safety sys­
tems may not work properly in an acci­
dent .
(0) Worn brake pads
Ell Brake pads!
If the warning light illumina tes, immediately
contact your authorized Audi dealer or quali ­
fied workshop to have all brake pads inspect­
ed. On USA models the warning light

comes on together with the warn ing light
1111 -Both sets of b rake pads on an axle
must always be replaced at the same time .
A WARNING
Driving with bad brakes can cause a colli­
sion and serious personal injury.

EPC Electronic power control
This warning/indicator light monitors the
electronic power control.
The ~ warning/indicator light (Electronic
Power Control) illuminates when you switch
the ignition on as a function check.
(D Tips
If this warning/indicator light illuminates
while you are driving, then there is a mal­
function in the engine electronics. Have
the malfunct ion corrected as soon as pos­
sible by your authorized Audi dealer or a
qualified repair facility.
0 Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
Th e Ma lfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is part
of the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system.
T he symbo l¢• lights up when the ignition is
switched on and will turn off after the engine
has started and has settled at a constant idle
speed. This indicates that the MIL is working
properly.
T he warning light illuminates when there is a
malfunction in the engine electronic system .
Contact your authorized Audi dea ler and have
the malfunction corrected.

The IJI symbol illuminates when there is an
engine control malfunction. The
[3i indicator
light in the instrument cluster also illumi­
nates . The engine speed is limited to the
speed d isplayed in the driver information sys­
tem . Keep in mind that the eng ine speed will
not exceed the value displayed in the drive r in­
formation system , for example when down­
shifting.
Drive to your authorized Aud i dealer immedi ­
ately to have the malfunct ion corrected.

If the symbol illuminates, contact your au­
thor ized Audi dealer and have the o il sensor
i nspected . Until you have th is done, check the

a fog light has failed . The position of the in­
dicator light corresponds with the location
on the vehicle .
- If the
IJ indicator light also turns on, then
a rear fog* light has failed . The position of
the indicator light corresponds with the lo­
cation on the vehicle.
T his warning can also occ ur if the light switch
is in an unengaged position between two sym­
bols.
Vehicle lights : System fault!
If the message appears, there is a malfunc­
tion in the headlights or light sw itch.
Drive to your au thorized Audi dealer immedi­
ately to have the malfunction corrected .
A WARNING
-Light bulbs a re p ressurized and could ex­
plode wh ile they are being changed caus­
ing serious personal injury.
- Work with due care when hand ling the
high-voltage section of gas discharge
(xenon) lights*. Failure to do so could re­
sult in death or serious injury .

adaptive light *
When switched on, adaptive ligh t adap ts to
curves in the road depend ing on the vehicle
speed and the steering ang le. This provides
better lighting through the curve. The system
operates at speeds between approximately 6 mph (10 km/h) and 68 mph (110 km/h).
St atic corner ing light * (vehicles with adaptive
light) -the cornering light switches on at
speeds up to approximately 25 mph (40 km/ h) when a certain steering wheel angle is
reached or when a turn signal is activated. The
area to the s ide of the vehicle is illuminated
better whe n turn ing .
The adaptive light and the cornering light only
function when the switch is in the AUTO posi­
tion (automatic headlights*) .
A WARNING
-Daytime running lights and automatic
headlights* are only intended to ass ist
the driver . T hey do no t re lieve the driver
of his responsibility to chec k the head ­
lights and to t urn them on manua lly ac­
cording to the current light and visibility
conditions. For examp le, fog cannot be
detected by the light sensors*. So a lways
switch on the headlights
~D under these
weather conditions and when driving in
the dark .
- Crashes can happen when you cannot see
the road ahead and when you cannot be
seen by other motorists. Always turn on
the head lights so that you can see ahead
and so that others can see your car from
the back.
- Please obey all laws when using the
lig hting sys tems described here.

The rear fog lights* should on ly be turned
on in accordance with t raff ic regulation, as

@ Tips
- The light sensor* for headlight control is
located in the rear view m irror mount.
You should therefore not apply any st ick­
ers to the windsh ield in this area in order
to prevent malfunctions or failures.
- Some exterior lighting functions can be
adjusted
c> page 50.
- When you remove your key from the igni­
tion while the vehicle's lights are turned
on, a buzzer sounds as long as the driv­
er's door is open .
- In cool or damp weather, the ins ide of
the headlights, turn signals and tail lights can fog over due to the tempera­
ture difference between the inside and
outside. They will clea r shor tly after
switching them on. This does not affect
the service life of the lighting.
- In the even t of a light sensor malfunc­
tion, the driver is no tified in the instru­
ment cluster disp lay¢

Turn signals and high beam lever
The lever operates the turn signals, the high
beams and the headlight flasher .

Passenger exter io r mirro r tilt function*
To help yo u see the curb when backing into a
parking space, the surface of the mirror t ilts
slightly . The knob m ust be in the
P posit ion
for this to happen .
You ca n adjus t the tilted mirror sur face by
turn ing the knob in the des ired direction .
When you move out of reverse and into anoth­
e r gear, the new mirror posit ion is stored and
assigned to the key you are using.
T he mirror goes back into its origina l posit io n
once yo u drive forward faster than 9 mph
(15 km/h) or switch the ignition off .
_& WARNING
Curved mirror sur faces (convex or sphe ri­
c al *) incre ase yo ur field of v iew. Remem­
ber that vehicles or o ther objects will ap­
pear smaller and farther away than w hen
seen in a flat m irror. If you use this mirror
to estimate distances of following veh icles
w hen changing lanes, you co uld estimate
incorrectly and ca use an accide nt.

- If the mirro r ho using is moved u ninten­
tiona lly (for example, whi le park ing your
vehicle), then you must first fo ld the mir­

wipe func tion is reactiva ted the next time the
ignition is switched on.
a llroad: The rear w iper automatically switches
on when the reve rse gear is engaged and the
front w indshield w ipers are on and in opera­
tion .
C lean ing the headlights*. The headlight wash­
e r system* opera tes on ly when the headl ights
a re on. If you move the leve r to pos ition @,
the head lights are washed in intervals.
@ -allroad : Wipe the rear window. The rear
wiper moves about every 4 seconds.
(J) -allroad : Clean the rear window . The num­
ber of wiping operations depends on how long
the lever is held in pos ition

_& WARNING
- T he ra in sensor is only inte nded to assist
the drive r. The driver is still responsible
for man ually switching the wipers on ac­
cording to the v isibility conditions .
- T he windshie ld may not be treated w ith
water-repe lling windshie ld coating
agents . Unfavorable conditions, such as
wetness, darkness, low sun, can res ult in
increased glare. Wiper blade chatter is
also possible .
- Proper ly functioning windshie ld w iper
blades are required for a clear view and safe driving
I:!) page 57, Replacing
windshield wiper blades.
@ Note
- In the case of frost, check whethe r the
windshield wiper blades are frozen to
the windshield. Sw itching on the wind­
shield wipers can damage the wiper
blades!
- Pr ior to us ing a car wash, the w indshield
w iper system must be sw itched off ( lever
in posit ion @). Th is he lps to prevent un­
intentional switching on and damage to
the windsh ield wiper system .
@ Tips
-The windshie ld wipers are switched off
when the ignit ion is turned off. Act ivate
the winds hield wipers after the ignition
is switched back on by moving the wind­
shield w iper lever to any position.
- Worn or d irty windshield wiper b lades
result in st reaking. This can affect the
rain sensor* function. Check your wind­
shield w ipe r blades regularly.
- The washer fluid nozz les of t he wind­
shield w asher system a re heated at low
temperat ures when the igni tion is on.
- When stopping tempo rarily, (e .g. at a
t raffic light) the set speed o f the wind­
shield wipers is automatically reduced by
one speed.
· Cleaning windshield wiper blades
Clean the windshie ld w iper b lades when they
begin to leave streaks. Use a soft cloth and
glass cle aner to clea n the windshield wiper
blades .

The memory buttons are located in the driv­
er's door.
Switching the memory function on/off
• Press the !OFF ! button to switch the memory
function on/off. The word
OFF lights up
when the memory function is switched off.
Seat profiles are neither stored nor recalled.
Storing a seat profile
• Press the !SET ! button. When the word SET
lights up, the memory is ready to store set­
t in gs.
• Press a memory button
([II or rn) briefly. A
tone confirms that the settings were stored.
Accessing a seat profile
• If the driver's door is open and the ignition
is switched off, press the memory button.
• If the driver's door is closed or the ignition is
switched on, press and hold the memory
button until the seat adjustment is com ­
plete .
A WARNING
-For safety reasons, the seat sett ing can
only be recalled when the vehicle is sta­
tionary - otherwise you risk having an ac­
c ident.
- In an emergency the recall procedure can
be cancelled by press ing the
!OF F! switch
or by tapping the memory buttons.

Opening/closing
• To open the ashtray, slide the cover up

Emptying the ashtray
• To remove the insert, slide the latch to the

• To instal l the insert, press it down into the
mount.
A WARNING
Never put waste paper in the ashtray. Hot
ashes or other hot objects in the ashtray
could set waste paper on fire.
Cigarette lighter

• Press the cigarette lighter in.
• Remove the cigarette lighter when it pops
out .
T he cigarette lighter should only be used as a
power source for the compressor from the in­
flatable spare kit* when absol ute ly necessary.
A WARNING
The cigarette lighter on ly works when the
ignition is switched on. Incorrect usage
can lead to serious injuries or burns. For
this reason, children should never be left unattended in the vehicle because this in­
creases the risk of injury.

Sw itching the i gnition on /off
If you wou ld like to switch the ignition on
without sta rting the engine, follow t hese
steps :
~ Insert the key into the ignition lock .
~ Press the key briefly without pressing the
clutch peda l (for manual transmissions) or
the brake peda l (for automatic transmis­
s ions) .
~ To switch the ignition off, press the key
again .
When starting the engine, major e lectr ica l
loads are switched off temporarily .
You can on ly remove the key with the ignition
switched off.
If the engine sho uld not sta rt immedia tely,
the starting process is automatically stopped
after a short time. Repeat starting proced ure .
A WARNING
-Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation.
- Never remove the ign ition key from the
ignition look while the vehicle is moving.
Otherw ise, the steering lock could sud­
denly engage and you would not be able
to steer the vehicle.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle . Otherwise, the
engine could be started or e lectr ical
equipment such as the power w indows
cou ld be operated. This ca n lead to seri­
o us inj ury.
- Never leave ch ild ren or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the veh icle. The
doors can be loc ked using the remote
transmitter, preventing people from es­ caping from the vehicle on their own in
the event of an emergency. Depend ing
on the time of year, people inside the ve-

hicle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatures.

Avoid high eng ine rpm, fu ll throttle and
heavy engine loads unti l the engine has
reached operating tempe rat ure -other­
wise you r isk eng ine damage.
@ For the sake of the environment
Do not let the engine run while parked to
warm up. Begin driving immediately. This
reduces unnecessary emissions.
@ Tips
- If the key cannot be removed from the
ignition lock, you have to pull the me­
chanical key out of the master key in or­
der to be able to lock the vehi-

-After starting a cold engine, there may
be a brief period of increased no ise be­
cause the oil pressure must first bu ild up
in the hydraulic valve adjusters. This is
normal and not a cause for concern.
- If you leave the veh icle with the ignition
switched on, the ign it ion w ill switch off
afte r a certa in per iod of t ime . Please
note that ele ctrical equ ipment such as
exterior lights will sw itch off as well
when that happens .

St eering lock
The stee ring locks when you turn the engine
off us ing the I STAR T ENGINE STOP I button
and open the dr iver's door. The locked stee r­
i ng helps preven t vehi cle theft.
Emergency off
If necessary, the eng ine ca n be sw itched off
with the selector leve r in the R or D/S pos i­
tions. To do so, step on the b rake pedal and
p ress a nd hold the
I START ENGINE STOP I but­
ton vehicle speed must be less th an 6 mph
(10 km/h).

- Never t urn off the eng ine before the ve­
hicle has come to a complete stop . The
full function o f the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed. You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary . Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usua lly would, this could
lead to crashes and se rious injur ies.
- For safety reasons, you s hould always
par k your vehicle with the se lector lever
in P. Ot he rwi se, the ve hicle co uld i nad­
vertent ly roll away.
- T he r adiator fan ca n continue to ru n for
up to 10 mi nutes even after yo u have
tu rne d
off the eng ine and remove d the ignit
ion key. T he radiator fan can a lso
tur n on again if the engine coo lant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
bu ild-up in the engine compartment.
- Always take the key w ith you whenever
you leave your ve hicle. Otherw ise, the
eng ine could be sta rted or elect rical
equ ipme nt such as the power windows
could be ope rated. This can lead to seri­
o us injury.

I S TART ENGI NE STOPI button is pressed if
there is no master key ins ide the veh icle or if
the system does not recognize it . Fo r exam­
ple, the master k ey cannot be recognized if it
is covered by an object (e.g. al uminum b rief
case) which
screens the radio s ignal. Elec tron­
ic dev ices such as cell phones can also inter­
fere with the radio s ignal.
Press brak e pedal to start engine
This message appears if you do not press the
brake pedal to start the eng ine in a veh icle
with an automat ic transm iss ion.
Press clutch pedal to sta rt engine
T his message ap pears if you do not press the
clutch pedal to start the engine in a vehicle
