A WARNING ,~ ~
If the ~ (USA models)/ . (Canada
models) brake system indicator light turns
on together with the ABS and ESC indica­
tor lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function
may have failed. Functions that stabilize
t he vehicle are no longer avai lab le. This
cou ld cause the vehicle to swerve and in­
crease the risk of sliding . Drive caref ully to
the nearest a uthorized Audi dea ler and
have the malfunction corrected.

ABS/(@!) Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL).
The warning/indicator light rII:1 (USA mod ­
els)/ [I] (Ca nada models) w ill come o n for a
few seconds when the ignition is switched on.
The light will go out after an a utomatic chec k
sequence is completed.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when :
- The warning/ indicator lig ht does not illumi ­
na te when you swi tc h t he ignition on.
- T he warning/i ndicator lig ht does not go out
after a few seconds .
- T he warn ing/ind icator lig ht illuminates
wh ile driving.
T he ESC indicator light also illuminates if
there is a malfunction in the ABS . The mes­
sage
Stabilization contro l (ESC) : Fault! See
owner 's manual
also appears in the inst ru­
men t clus ter display and a war ning tone
sounds.
Th e brake sy ste m will still respond even
without th e assi stan ce of the ABS sy ste m .

Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake war ning l igh t c::> page 15 and the
ABS wa rning illuminate
together there may be
a malfunct ion in the ABS , and there may a lso
be a malfunction in the brake system itself
c::> A . The AB S will not wo rk and you w ill no ­
tice a change in b raking response and per ­
formance .

Malfunction in th e electronic diff erential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together w ith the ABS. The
ABS warning light will come on if there is a malfunction in the EDL system

See your author ized Audi dealer as soon as
poss ible.
A WARNING
- I f the trm (USA mode ls)/ [I] (Canad a
models) warning light does not go ou t,
-
or if it comes on while dr iving, the ABS
system is not wor king p roperly. The vehi­
cle can then be stopped only w it h the
standard brakes (without ABS). You w ill
not have the protect ion ABS prov ides.
Contact your authorized Audi dealer as
soon as possible .

adaptive light *
When switched on, adaptive ligh t adap ts to
curves in the road depend ing on the vehicle
speed and the steering ang le. This provides
better lighting through the curve. The system
operates at speeds between approximately 6 mph (10 km/h) and 68 mph (110 km/h).
St atic corner ing light * (vehicles with adaptive
light) -the cornering light switches on at
speeds up to approximately 25 mph (40 km/ h) when a certain steering wheel angle is
reached or when a turn signal is activated. The
area to the s ide of the vehicle is illuminated
better whe n turn ing .
The adaptive light and the cornering light only
function when the switch is in the AUTO posi­
tion (automatic headlights*) .
A WARNING
-Daytime running lights and automatic
headlights* are only intended to ass ist
the driver . T hey do no t re lieve the driver
of his responsibility to chec k the head ­
lights and to t urn them on manua lly ac­
cording to the current light and visibility
conditions. For examp le, fog cannot be
detected by the light sensors*. So a lways
switch on the headlights
~D under these
weather conditions and when driving in
the dark .
- Crashes can happen when you cannot see
the road ahead and when you cannot be
seen by other motorists. Always turn on
the head lights so that you can see ahead
and so that others can see your car from
the back.
- Please obey all laws when using the
lig hting sys tems described here.

The rear fog lights* should on ly be turned
on in accordance with t raff ic regulation, as

dations
Why is your seat adjustment so
important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can
only provide maximum protection if the front
seats are correctly adjusted.
There are various ways of adjusting the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the driver and the front passenger. Adjust
you r seat prope rly so that :
- you can easily and quickly reach all the
switches and controls in the instrument
panel
-your body is properly supported thus reduc­
ing physical stress and fatigue
- the safety be lts and airbag system can offer
maximum protection ¢
page 144.
In the following sections, you will see exactly
how you can best adjust your seats .
There are special regulations and instructions
for installing a child safety seat on the front
passenger's seat. Always follow the informa­
tion regarding child safety provided in
¢ page 165, Child Safety.
WARNING
Refer to¢ page 126, Driving Safely for
important information, tips, suggestions
and warnings that you should read and fol­
low for your own safety and the safety of
your passengers.
A WARNING
, -
Incorrect seating position of the driver and
all other passengers can result in serious
personal injury .
- Always keep your feet on the floor when
the vehicle is in motion -never put your
feet on top of the instrument panel, out of the w indow or on top of the seat cush­
ion. This applies especially to the passen- gers
. If your seating position is incorrect,
you increase the risk of injury in the case
of sudden braking or an accident. If the
airbag inflates and the seating position is incorrect, this could result in personal
injury or even death.
- It is important for both the driver and front passenger to keep a distance of at
least 10 inches (25 cm) between them­
selves and the steering wheel and/or in­
strument panel.
If you're sitting any
closer than this, the airbag system can­
not protect you properly. In addition, the
front seats and head restraints must be
adjusted to your body height so that they
can give you maximum protection.
- Always try to keep as much distance as
possible between yourself and the steer­
ing wheel or instrument panel.
- Do not adjust the driver's or front pas­
senger 's seat while the vehicle is moving.
Your seat may move unexpectedly, caus­
ing sudden loss of veh icle control and
personal injury. If you adjust your seat
while the veh icle is moving, you are out
of posit ion.
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving .
We recommend that you adjust the driver's
seat in the following manner :
.. Adjust the seat in fore and aft direction so
that you can easily push the pedals to the
floor wh ile keeping your knees slightly bent
o &. in Why is your seat adjustment so im ­

60 .
.,. Adjust the seatback so that when you sit
w ith your back against the seatback , you can
still grasp the top of the steering wheel.
.. Applies to vehicles with adjustable head re­
straints: Adjust the head restraint so the up­
per edge is as even as possible with the top
of your head. If that is not possible, try to
adjust the head restraint so that it is as .,.

A WARNING
Never place any objects in the driver's foot­
well. An object could get into the pedal
area and interfere with pedal function. In
case of sudden braking or an accident, you
would not be able to brake or accelerate .
Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into
the rearmost position .
To avoid contact with the airbag while it is de­
ploying, do not sit any closer to the instru­
ment panel than necessary and always wear
the three-point safety belt provided adjusted
correctly . We recommend that you adjust the
passenger's seat in the following manner:
.,. Bring the backrest up to an (almost) upright
position.
Do not ride with the seat reclined .
"" Applies to vehicles with adjustable head re­
stra ints: Adjust the head restraint so the up­
per edge is as even as possible with the top
of your head. If that is not possible, try to
adjust the head restraint so that it is as
close to this position as possible

If you do this while the veh icle is moving,
you will be out of position. Always adjust
the dr iver's or front passenger's seat
when the vehicle is not mov ing.
- Be careful when adjusting the seat
he ight. Check to see that no one is in the
way, or ser ious injury could result!
- To reduce the risk of injury in the case of
sudden braking or accident, front pas­
sengers must never rid e in a moving ve­
hicle with the backrest reclined. Safety
be lts and the airbag system on ly offer
maximum protection when the backrest
is upright and the safety belts are prop ­
erly positioned on the body. The more
the backrest is reclined, the greater the
risk of personal injury from an incorrect
seating position and improperly posi­
tioned safety belts.

IAUTO I Switching automatic mode on
Automatic mode mainta ins a constant tem­
perature inside the vehicle. Air temperature,
airflow and air distribution are controlled au­
tomatically.
Adjusting the temperature
Temperatures between 60 °F (+16 °C) and
84 °F ( +28 °C) can be set . Outside of this
range,
LO or HI will appea r in the climate con­
trol system disp lay. At both of these settings,
the climate control system runs continuously
at maximum cooling or heating power . There
is no temperature regu lation.
~ Adjusting the airflow
You can adjust the airflow manually to su it
your needs . To have the airflow regulated au­
tomatically , press the
!AUTO ! button.
~ Adjusting the air distribution
You can manually select the vents where the
a ir will flow . To have the air d istribution regu­
lated automatically, press the
IAUTOI button .
~ Adjusting seat heating*
Pressing the button switches the seat heating
on at the highest sett ing (level 3) . The LEDs
indicate the temperature leve l. To reduce the
temperature, press the button again . To
switch the seat heating off , press the button
repeatedly until the LED turns off .
After 10 minutes , the seat heating automati­
cally switches from level 3 to leve l 2.
I@ FR ON T I Switch the defroster on/off
The windshield and s ide windows are defrost­
ed or cleared of condensation as quickly as
possible . The max imum amount of air flows
mainly from the vents below the windshield.
Recirculation mode switches off . Th e tempera- tu
re should be set to 72 °F (22 °C) or higher.
The temperature is contro lled automatically.
T he
!AU TO I button switches the defroster off.
lliill REAR ! Switching rear window heater
on/off
T he rear window heate r only operates w hen
the engine is running.
It sw itches off auto­
matically after a few minutes, depending on
the outside temperature .
T o p revent the rea r window heater from
switching off automatically , press and hold
the
l lil REA RI button for more than 2 seconds.
T his remains stored until the ignition is
switched off.
Air vents
You can open and close the center and rear air
vents using the thumbwheels. The levers ad­
just the direction of the airflow from the
vents.
In veh icles with a 3-zone deluxe automatic cli­
mate control system*, you can adjust the air
temperature in the rear by turning the thumb­
whee l toward the red side to make it warmer
or toward the b lue side to make it coo ler.
A WARNING
-- Do not use the recirc ulation for extended
periods of time. The windows could fog
up since no fresh a ir can enter the vehi­
cle . If the windows fog up, press the air
recirc ulation butto n again immediately
to switch off the air recirculation func­
tion o r se lect defrost.
- Individuals with reduced sensitivity to
pa in or temperature could develop burns
when using the seat heating function . To
reduce the risk of injury, these indiv idu­
als shou ld not use seat heating.

To avoid damage to the heating elements
in the seats, do not kneel on the seats or
place heavy loads on a small area of the
seat.

Manually adjustable steering wheel
The steering wheel position is fully adjustable
up and down and forward and bock .

First, adjust the driver's seat correctly .
• Pull the lever

• Move the steer ing whee l to the desired posi­
t ion.
• Push the lever against the steering column
until it locks.
There must be at least 10 inches (25 cm) be­ tween your chest and the center of the steer­
ing wheel. If you cannot sit more than 10 in­
ches (25 cm) from the steering whee l, see if
adaptive equipment is available to help you
reach the pedals and increase the distance
from the steering wheel.

A WARNING
Improper use of steeri ng wheel adjust­
ment and improper seating position can
cause serious personal injury.
- Adjust the steering whee l co lumn on ly
when the veh icle is not moving to pre­
vent loss of veh icle control.
- Adjust the driver's seat or steering wheel
so that there is a minimum of 10 inches
(25 cm) between your chest and the
steering wheel
¢ page 127, fig . 139. If
yo u cannot mainta in this min imum dis- tance, the airbag system cannot protect
you proper ly.
- If physical limitations prevent you from
sitting 10 inches (25 cm) or more from
the steering wheel, check with your au­
thorized Audi dealer to see if adaptive
equ ipment is ava ilable .
- If the steer ing wheel is aligned with your
face, the supplementa l driver's a irbag
cannot provide as much protection in an
accident . Always make sure that the
steer ing wheel is aligned with your
chest.
- Always hold the steering wheel w ith your
hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posi­
tions to reduce the risk of persona l injury
if the driver's airbag dep loys .
- Never hold the stee ring wheel at the 12
o'clock position or with your hands inside
the steeri ng wheel rim or on the steering
wheel hub . Holding the steering wheel
the wrong way can cause serious injuries
to the hands, arms and head if the driv­
er's airbag deploys.

The ignition is switched on and the engine

mission) is engaged with the vehicle sta­
tionary and the engine running, you must in no instance accelerate or release the
clutch* carelessly. Otherwise the vehicle
will start to move immediately -risk of an
accident .

ignition switched off, the indicator lights

ter will go out after a certain per iod of
time .
- Occas iona l noises when the park ing

- Wh en the vehicle is parked, the parking
brake goes through a se lf-test cycle a t
regular intervals. Any assoc iated noises
are no rma l.

the par king brake or operate electrical

is the risk of an accident.
- W hen the veh icle is locked, no one -pa r­
ticularly not children should remain in
the vehicle . Locked doors make it more
difficult for emergency worke rs to get in­
to the vehicle -putting lives at risk .
· Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking broke is rel eased automatically upon
starting.
Stopping and appl ying parking brake

Starting and automatically releasing the
parking brake
.. When you start to dr ive as usual, the p ark ­
ing bra ke is automatica lly released and your
vehicle begins to move .
When stopping at a t raffic signal or stopping
in city t raffic on vehicles with an a utomatic
t ransmission, the parking brake can be ap­
plied. The vehicle does not have to be held
with the footbrake . The parking brake elimi­
nates the tendency to creep w ith a dr ive range
engaged. As soon as you drive off as usual,
the parking brake is re leased automat ically
and the vehicle starts to move .
Starting on slop es
When starting on inclines, the starting assist
prevents the vehicle from un in tent ionally roll­
ing back. The braking force of the parking
brake is not released until suffic ient driving
force has been built up at the wheels .

For safety reasons, the par king brake is re­
leased au tomatically only when the dr iv­
er 's safety belt is engage d in the buckle.
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an
incline , do the following:
~ Keep the switch @¢ page 87, fig . 101
pulled and depress the accelerator. The
park ing brake stays app lied and prevents
the vehicle from rolling backward.
~ You can release the switch @once you are
sure that you are develop ing enough dr iv ing
force at the wheels by depress ing the accel­
erator .
Depending on the weight of the r ig (vehicle
and trailer) and the severity of the incl ine, you
may roll backwards as you start . You can pre­
ve nt rolling backwards by holding the parking
b rake sw itch @pulled out and accelerating -
jus t as you would whe n starting on a hill with
a conventional hand brake.
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake sys ­
tem fails or locks.
~ I n an eme rgency, pull the sw itch @
¢page 87, fig. 101 and continue to p ull it
to s low your vehi cle down wi th the pa rk ing
brake .
~ As soon as you release the switch @ or ac-
ce lerate, the braking process stops.
I f you pull the switch @and ho ld it above a
speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergen ­
cy braking function is initiated . The vehicle is
braked at a ll four wheels by activating the hy­
draulic brake system. T he brake performance
is similar to making an emergency stop ¢
&. .
In order not to activate the emergency brak ­
ing by m istake, an a udible warning tone (buz­
zer) sounds when the switch @is pulled. As
soon as the switch @ is released, or the accel-

erator peda l is depressed, eme rgency braking
stops.
A WARNING
Emergency braking should only be used in
an emergency, when the norma l foot brake
has fa iled or the brake pedal is obstructed.
Using the parking brake to perform emer­
gency b rak ing will slow your vehicle down
as if you had made a full bra ke application .
T he laws of physics cannot be suspended
even with ESC and its asso ciated compo­
nents (ABS, ASR , EDS) . In corners and
when road or weathe r conditions are bad,
a full brake application can ca use the vehi­
cle to sk id or the rear end to break away -
risking an accident.
Speed warning system
Overv iew
The speed warning system helps you to keep
your driving speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warn ing system warns if the driver
exceeds a previous ly stored max imum speed.
A war ning tone w ill so und as soon as the vehi­
cle speed exceeds the set speed by about 3 mph (3 km/h). At the same time, a warn ing
symbol appears in the display. The symbo l's
appearance might be different in some mod ­
els.
T he speed wa rn ing system has one or two*
warning thresholds that func tion independ ­
en tly of each othe r and that have somewhat
different purposes:
Speed warning 1
You can use speed warn ing 1 to set the maxi­
mum speed while you are d riving. This se tting
will re ma in in effec t unti l yo u t urn
off the ig ni­
tion, assuming that yo u have no t changed or
reset the setting.
