The head-up display projects certa in warnings or
selected information from the ass ist systems* or

In the Infotainment system, you can specify
which information should be displayed: For ex­
ample, this can include navigation information*,
adaptive cruise control* or camera-based traffic
sign recognition *.
The display of certa in information and some of
the red indicator lights cannot be hidden in the
Infotainment system.
Brightness
You can adjust the display brightness in the Info­
tainment system. The d isplay brightness decreas -

es automatically as the amount of light decreas ­
es . The background brightness is adjusted with
the instrument
illumination ~ page 58.
Picture rotation
You can rotate the picture in the Infotainment
system clockwise or counter clockwise.

head-up display, do no t place any objec ts in
the pro jection opening .

-Sunglasses with po larization filte rs and un­
favorable light ing cond itions can have a
negative effect on the disp lay .
- An optimum disp lay depends on the seat
posit ion and the height ad justment of the
head -up disp lay.
- A spec ial windshie ld is needed for the head ­
up display funct ion .

On-Board Diagnostic
System (OBD)
Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)
The ma lf u nction indicator lamp (MIL) ¢;# in the
i nstrumen t cluster is part of the On-Board Diag­
nostic System (OBD II).
The indicator light turns on when the ignition is
switched on and turns off once the engine is
star ted and is r unning in idle at a stable speed.
This indicates that the MI L is fu nctioning correct­
l y .
If th e light do es n ot turn off aft er start ing the
e ngin e
or turns on while driving, this may indi­
cate there is a malfunction in the engine .
If the
i ndicator turns on, the cata lytic converter may be
damaged.

The individua l safety features of your vehicle can
work together as a system to help protect you
and your passengers in a wide range of accidents.
These features cannot work as a system if they
are not always correctly adjusted and correctly
used .
This chapter contains important informat ion,
tips, instruct ions and warn ings that you need to
read and observe for your own safety, the safety
of your passengers and others . We have summar­
ized here what you need to know about safety
be lts , a ir bags, child restra ints as well as child
safety. Yo ur sa fe ty is for us
priority number 1 . Al ­
ways observe the information and wa rnings in
this section - for your own safety as well as that
of your passengers.
The informa tion in this section applies to all
model ve rsions of your vehicle . Some of the fea­
tures described in th is sections may be standard
equipment on some models, or may be optional
equ ipment on others. If you are not sure, ask
your author ized Audi dealer.

- Always make sure that you follow the in­
structions and heed the WARNINGS in th is

safety always depends on the informed and care­
ful driver .

What impairs driving safety?
Safe driving is directly related to the condition of
the vehicle , the driver as well as the driver's abili ­
ty to concentra te on the road withou t being dis­
tracted.
The driver is responsib le for the sa fety of the ve­
hicle and a ll of its occupants . If your ability to
drive is impa ired, safety risks for everybody in the
vehicle increase and you a lso become a hazard to
everyone else on the road ¢

Automatic safety belt r etractors
Every safety be lt is equ ipped wi th an automatic
be lt retractor on the shoulder belt. Th is feature
l ocks the belt when the belt is p ulled out fast,
during hard braking and in an accident. The belt may also lock when you drive up or down a steep
h ill or through a sharp curve. During normal driv­
ing the belt lets you move freely .
Safety be lt pret en sioner s
The safety belts are equipped with a belt preten­
sioner that helps to tighten the safety belt and
remove slack when the pretensioner is activated
c:> page 269. The function of the pretensioner is
monitored by a warning light
c:> page 32.
Con vertible loc king retractor
Every safety belt exc ept the one on the driver
seat is equipped with a convertible locking retrac­
tor that
mu st be used when the safety belt is
used to attach a child safety seat. Be sure to read
the impo rtant information about this feature

Safety belt position.
-Safety belts offer optimum protection only
when the seatback is upr ight and belts are
prope rly pos itioned on the body.
-Always ma ke sure tha t the rear sea t bac k­
rest to wh ic h t he cente r rea r safety be lt is
attached is secure ly latched whenever the
rear center safety belt is being used. If the
backrest is not securely latched, the passen­
ger will move forward with the backrest dur­
ing sudden braking, in a sudden maneuver
and especially in a cras h.
-Never attach the safety belt to the buckle
for another seat. Attaching the belt to the
wrong buckle w ill red uce safety belt effec­
t iveness and can cause serious personal in­
jury.
-A passenger who is not p roperly restrained
can be seriously in ju red by the safety be lt it­
self when it moves from the stronger par ts

when you are securing a child safety seat in
the vehicle

Safety belt position
Correct belt position is the key to getting maxi­
mum protection from safety belts.

center of the collar bone as possib le and
should fit well on the body . Ho ld the belt
above the latch to ngue and pull it evenly
across the chest so th at it sits as low as pos­
sible on the pe lvis and there is no p ressure
on the abdomen . The belt should a lway s fit

Incorrectly positioned safety belts can cause se ­
vere injuries .
Wearing safety belts improperly can cause seri­
ous injury or death . Safety belts can only work
when they are correctly pos itioned on the body .
Improper seating positions reduce the effect ive­
n ess of safety be lts and will even inc rease the
ris k of injury and death by mov ing the safety bel t
to cr it ica l areas of the body. Imp roper seating
positions also increase the risk of serious inj ury
and death when an airbag deploys and strikes an
occ upant who is not in the co rrect s eat ing posi­
tion . A driver is respons ible for the safety of all
vehicle occupants and espec ia lly for children .

Belt tensioners
How safety belt pretensioners work
Reversible safety belt pr etensioners
T he following fu nctions a re availab le w hen safety
bel ts w it h reversib le safety bel t tensione rs a re
f astened:
- In ce rtain driving situations , the safety belts
may tighten w it h a reversib le tensioning func ­
tion ¢ page 120.
-The safety be lts may also tighten with this re-
versible tens ion ing f un ct ion in m ino r colli sions.
Pyrotechnic safety belt pretens ioners
Seat belts with pyrotechnic safety belt preten ­
sioners are tensioned automatically i n severe col·
lisions , depending on the circumstances . This
helps to reduce the fo rwa rd motion of the o ccu­
pants.
A WARNING

- I t is poss ible for the pretensioners to dep loy
incorrectly .
- Any wo rk on the tens ioner system o r remov­
al and installation of system components
for other repairs m ust be performed by a
qualified wor kshop.
- The pyrote chnic system can only provide
protection for one collision. If the py rotech­
n ic pretens ioners deploy, the pretensioning
system must be replaced .
(D Tips
- A fine dust is re leased when the pyrotechnic
safety belt pretensioners dep loy. This is no r­
ma l and is not caused by a f ire in the veh i-
cle.

-For safety reasons in severe accidents, the
alternator and starter are separated from
the vehicle battery with a pyrotechn ic circuit
interrupter.
-Work on the pyrotechnic circ uit interrupt ­
er must only be performed by
a qualified
technicians who have the experience, in ­
formation and special tools necessary to
perform the work safely.
-I f the vehicle or the circuit interrupter is
scrapped, all app licab le safety precautions
must be followed .
@) For the sake of the environment
Undeployed airbag modu les a nd pretension ­
ers might be classified as Perch lorate Materi­
al
-special handling may apply, see
www.dtsc .ca.gov/hazardouswaste/perchlo­
rate. When the vehicle or parts of the re­
straint system including airbag modules and
safety belts with pretensioners are scrapped,
all applicable laws and regulations must be
observed. Your authorized Audi dealer is fa­
m iliar with these requi rements a nd we recom­
mend t hat you have you r dealer perform this
service for you.
Other things that can affect Advanced
Airbag performance
Changing the vehicle's suspension system can
change the way that the Advanced Airbag System performs in a crash . For example, using tire-r im
comb inat ions not approved by Audi, lowering the
ve hicl e, chang ing the stiffness of the suspens io n,
in clud ing the spr ings, suspens ion str uts, shock
absorbers et c. can change the forces that are
measured by the airbag sensors and sent to the
e lectronic contro l unit. Some suspension changes
can, for example, increase the force levels meas­
ured by the sensors and make the airbag system
deploy in crashes in wh ich it would not deploy if
the changes had not been made. Other ki nds of
changes may reduce the fo rce levels meas ured by
the sensors and prevent the airbag from deploy­
in g when i t should .
Airbag sys tem
A WARNING
-Changing the vehicle's suspension including
use of unapproved tire-rim combinations can
change Advanced Airbag performance and in­
crease the risk of serious persona l injury in a
crash.
- Never install suspension components that
do not have the same pe rformance charac­
teristics as the components o rigina lly ins tal­
led on your vehicle.
- Never use tire-rim combinations t hat have
not been approved by Audi.
Knee airbags
Description of knee airbags
The knee airbag system can provide supplemen­
tal protection to prop erly restrained front sea t
occupants.

Booster seats and safety belts
Properly used booster seats can help protect
children weighing between about 40 lbs. and
80 lbs . (18 kg and 36 kg) who are less than 4
ft.
9 in. (57 inches/1.45 meters) tall.

The vehicle's safety belts alone will not fit most
children until they are at least 4
ft. 9 in. (57 in­
ches/1.45 meters) tall and weigh about 80 lbs.
(36 kg). Booster seats raise these children up so
that the safety belt will pass properly over the
stronger parts of their bodies and the safety belt
can help protect them in a crash.
.,. Do not use the convertible locking retractor
when using the vehicle's safety belt to restrain
a chi ld on a booster seat .
.. The shoulder belt must lie as close to the cen­
ter of the child's collar bone as possible and
must lie fla t and snug on the upper body.
It
must never lie across the throat or neck. The
lap belt must lie across the pelvis and never
across the stomach or abdomen. Make sure the
belt lies flat and snug. Pull on the belt to tight­
en if necessary .
.,. If you must transport an older child in a boos­
ter seat on the front passenger seat , you can
use the safety belt height adjustment to help
adjust the shoulder portion properly .

Children up to at least 8 years old (over 40 lbs. or
18 kg) are best protected in child safety seats
de­
signed for their age and we ight. Experts say that
the skeletal structure , part icularly the pelvis , of
these children is not fully developed, and they

must not use the vehicle safety belts without a
suitable child restraint .
It is usually best to put these children in appro­
priate booster seats. Be su re the booster seat
meets all applicab le safety standards .
Booster seats raise the seating position of the
child and reposition both the lap and shoulder
parts of the safety belt so that they pass across
the child's body in the right places. The routing of
the belt over the chi ld's body is very important
for the ch ild's protection, whether or not a
boos­
ter seat is used. Children age 12 and under must
always ride in the rear seat.
Ch ildr en who are at least 4
ft. 9 in. (57 inches/
1.45 meters) tall can generally use the vehicle 's
three point lap and shoulder belts . Never use the
lap belt portion of the vehicle 's safety belt alone
to restrain any ch ild, regard less of how big the
ch ild is. Always remember that childr en do not
have the pronounced pelvic structure required for
the proper function of lap belt portion of the
ve­
hicle's three point lap and shoulder belts . T he

the lap belt portion of the safety belt pass over
the child 's stomach or abdomen .
In a crash, airbags must inflate within a blink of
an eye and with considerab le force. In order to do
its job, the airbag needs room to inflate so that it
will be there to protect the occupant as the
occu­
pan t moves forward into the airbag .
A vehicle occ upant who is out of position and too
close to the a irbag gets in the way of an inflating
airbag. When an occupant is too close , he or she
will be struck violently and will receive serious or possibly even fata l injury .
In order for the airbag to offer protection, it is
important that all vehicle occupants, especially
any children, who must be in the front seat

restrained and as far away from the airbag as
