curvesorinpoorroadorweatherconditions
cancausethevehicletoslideortherearof
thevehicletoswerve,whichincreasesthe
riskofanaccident.
Ifthepowersupplyfails,youcannotsetthe
parkingbrakeonceitisreleased.Ifthisis
thecase,stopthevehicleonlevelground
andsecureitbyengaging1stgear(manual
transmission)orselectingthe"P"selector
leverposition(automatictransmission).See
anauthorizedAudidealerorauthorizedAu-
diServiceFacilityforassistance.
Alwayssettheparkingbrakewhenleaving
yourvehicle,evenifforashortperiodof
time.Iftheparkingbrakeisnotset,theve-
hiclecouldrollaway,increasingtheriskof
anaccident.
Ifyouleavethevehicle,switchtheignition
offandtakethevehiclekeywithyou.This
appliesparticularlywhenchildrenremainin
thevehicle.Otherwise,childrencouldstart
theengine,releasetheparkingbrake,orop-
erateelectricalequipmentsuchaspower
windows,whichincreasestheriskofanacci-
dent.
Noone,especiallychildren,shouldremainin
thevehiclewhenitislocked.Lockeddoors
makeitmoredifficultforemergencywork-
erstoenterthevehicle,whichputslivesat
risk.

Whenstoppingatatrafficsignalorstopping
incitytraffic,youcansettheparkingbrake

ElectronicStabilizationControl(ESC)supports
driversafety.Itreducestheriskofslippingand
improvesdrivingstability.ESCdetectscriticalsit-
uations,suchasifthevehicleisoversteeringor
understeering,orifthewheelsare spinning.The
brakesareappliedortheenginetorqueisre-
ducedinordertostabilizethevehicle.Whenthe
ESCengages,theBindicatorlightflashesinthe
instrumentcluster.
ThefollowingsystemsareintegratedintheESC:
Anti-lockbrakingsystem(ABS)
ABSpreventsthewheelsfromlockingwhenbrak-
ing.Thevehiclecanstillbesteeredevenduring
hardbraking.Applysteadypressuretothebrake
pedal.Donotpumpthepedal.Apulsinginthe
brakepedalindicatesthatthesystemisacting to
stabilizethevehicle.
Brakeassistsystem
Thebrakeassistsystemcandecreasebrakingdis-
tance.Itincreasesbrakingpowerwhenthe driver
pressesthebrakepedalquicklyinemergencysit-
uations.Youmustpressandholdthebrakepedal
untilthedangeroussituationisover.Invehicles
withadaptivecruisecontrol*,thebrakeassist
systemismoresensitiveifthedistancedetected
tothevehicledrivingaheadistoosmall.
Anti-SlipRegulation(ASR)
ASRreducesenginepowerwhenthedrivewheels
beginspinningandadaptstheforcetotheroad
conditions.Thismakesiteasiertostart,acceler-
ateanddriveuphills.
ElectronicDifferentialLock(EDL)
TheEDLappliesthe brakestowheelsthatare
slippingandtransfersthedrivepowertotheoth-
erwheels.Thisfunctionisnotavailableathigher
speeds.

Inextremecases,EDLautomaticallyswitchesoff
tokeepthebrakeonthebrakedwheelfromover-
heating.Thevehicleisstillfunctioningcorrectly.
EDLwillswitchonagainautomaticallywhencon-
ditionshavereturnedtonormal.
Powersteering
The ESCcanalsosupportvehiclestability
throughsteering.
Selectivewheeltorquecontrol
Selectivewheeltorquecontrolisusedwhendriv-
ingoncurves.Brakingistargetedtowardthe
wheelsontheinsideofthecurveasneeded.This
allowsmoreprecisedrivingincurves.
Automaticpost-collisionbrakingsystem
The“automaticpost-collisionbrakingsystem”
canhelptoreducetheriskofslidingandofaddi-
tionalcollisionsafteranaccident.Iftheairbag
controlmoduledetectsacollision,thevehicleis
braked bytheESC.
Thevehicledoesnotbrakeautomaticallyifoneof
thefollowingoccurs:
—Thedriverpressestheacceleratorpedal
—TheESC,thebrakesystem,orthevehicleelec-
tricalsystemisnotfunctioning
ZAWARNING
— The ESCanditsintegratedsystemscannot
overcomethelimitsimposedbynatural
physicallaws.Thisisespeciallyimportanton
slipperyorwetroads.Ifthesystemsbegin
actingtostabilizeyourvehicle,youshould
immediatelyalteryourspeedtomatchthe
roadandtrafficconditions.Donotletthein-
creasedsafetyprovidedtemptyouintotak-
ingrisks.Thiscouldincreaseyourriskofa
collision.
—Pleasenotetheriskofacollisionincreases
whendrivingfast,especiallythroughcurves
andonslipperyorwetroads,andwhendriv-

assistwhendrivingslowerthan37mph(60
km/h).Theassistbeginsshortlyafteryoustart
drivingandcontinuesuptoapproximately
19mph(30km/h).Invehicleswithamanual
transmission,regulationbelowapproximately6
mph(9km/h)isonlypossibleiftheclutchpedal
ispressedorifthegearshiftisintheneutralposi-
tion.Iftheclutchpedalisreleasedwhenagearis
engagedbelowapproximately6mph(9km/h),
the regulatedspeedwillincrease.Thedrivercan
increaseordecreasethevehiclespeedwithin
theselimitsbypressingtheacceleratororbrake
pedal.
However,theremustbeenoughtraction.Hillde-
scentassistcannotfunctionasexpected,iffor
examplethehillisicyorifthesurfaceisloose
SA.
Activeregulationofaspeeduptoapproximately
19mph(30km/h)issignaledintheinstrument

Neverrelyonairbagsaloneforprotection.Even
whentheydeploy,airbagsprovideonlyadditional
protection.Airbagsarenotsupposedtodeployin
allkindsofaccidents.AlthoughyourAudiis
equippedwithairbags,allvehicleoccupants,in-
cludingthedriver,mustwearsafetybeltscor-
rectlyinordertominimizetheriskofseverein-
juryordeathinacrash.
Remembertoo,thatairbagswilldeployonlyonce
andthatyoursafetybeltsarealwaystheretoof-
ferprotectioninthoseaccidentsinwhichairbags
arenotsupposedtodeployorwhentheyhaveal-
readydeployed.Unbeltedoccupantscanalsobe
thrownoutofthevehiclewhereevenmoresevere
orfatalinjuriescanoccur.
Itisalsoimportantfortherearpassengersto
wearsafetybeltscorrectly.Unbeltedpassengers
intherearseatsendangernotonlythemselves
butalsothedriverandotherpassengers

Peoplethinkit'spossibletousethehandsto
bracethebodyinaminorcollision.It'ssimply

ence.Safetybeltshelptokeeppassengersin
theirseats,graduallyreduceenergylevelsap-

ousinjuries.Inaddition,safetybeltsreduce the
dangerofbeingthrownoutofthevehicle.
Safetybeltsattachpassengerstothecarandgive
themthebenefitofbeingsloweddownmore
gentlyor“softly”throughthe“give”inthesafety
belts,crushzonesandothersafetyfeaturesengi-
neeredintotoday'svehicles.By“absorbing”the
kineticenergyoveralongerperiodoftime,the
safetybeltsmaketheforcesonthebodymore
“tolerable”andlesslikelytocauseinjury.
Althoughtheseexamplesarebasedonafrontal
collision,safetybeltscanalsosubstantiallyre-
duce
theriskofinjuryinotherkindsofcrashes.
So,whetheryou'reonalongtripor justgoingto
thecornerstore,alwaysbuckleup andmakesure
othersdo,too.Accidentstatisticsshowthatvehi-
cleoccupantsproperlywearingsafetybeltshave
alowerriskofbeinginjuredandamuchbetter
chanceofsurvivinganaccident.Properlyusing
safetybeltsalsogreatly increasestheabilityof
thesupplementalairbagstodotheirjobinacol-
lision.Forthisreason,wearingasafetybeltisle-
gallyrequiredinmostcountriesincludingmuch
oftheUnitedStatesandCanada.
AlthoughyourAudiisequippedwithairbags,you
stillhavetowearthesafetybeltsprovided.Front
airbags,forexample,areactivatedonlyinsome
frontalcollisions.Thefrontairbagsarenotacti-
vatedinallfrontalcollisions,insideandrearcol-
lisions,inrolloversorincaseswherethereisnot
enoughdecelerationthroughimpacttothefront
ofthevehicle.Thesamegoesfortheotherairbag
systemsinyourAudi.So,alwayswearyoursafety
beltandmakesureeverybodyinyourvehicleis
properlyrestrained!

tionalobjectscouldcausethepassenger

onthefrontpassengerseatwhentheignitionis

frontpassengerseatcontainsimportantparts of

Changingthevehicle'ssuspensionsystemcan
changethewaythattheAdvancedAirbagSystem
performsinacrash.Forexample,usingtire-rim
combinationsnotapprovedbyAudi,loweringthe
vehicle,changingthestiffnessofthesuspension,
includingthesprings,suspensionstruts,shock
absorbersetc.canchangetheforcesthatare
measuredbytheairbagsensorsandsenttothe
electroniccontrolunit.Somesuspensionchanges
can,forexample,increasetheforcelevelsmeas-
uredbythesensorsandmaketheairbagsystem
deployincrashesinwhichitwouldnotdeployif
thechangeshadnotbeenmade.Otherkindsof
changesmayreducetheforcelevelsmeasuredby
thesensorsandpreventtheairbagfromdeploy-
ingwhenitshould.
