M alfu nction message
If there is a malfunction somewhere in the ins trument cluster, dE F
will appear in the trip odometer and will stay on. Contact your
authorized Audi dea ler to have the prob lem corrected.
Im mob ilizer
Each time you switch on the ignition, the data stored in the vehicle
key are e lectronically scanned to verify that key data and vehicle
data match. If a non -coded or a defective vehic le key is used, the
word
S A FE wi ll appear and remain lit in the upper (trip) odometer
display . If this happens, the vehicle cannot be started=>
page 49. •
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge works only when the ignition is on .
When the needle reaches the red area, the warning light in the instrument cluster wil l illuminate =>
page 33 [). This means you
have approx imately 2.4 gallons (9 liters) of fuel left in the tank.
Time
t o refu el!
The total tank capacity of your vehicle is listed in=> page 314.
0 Note
Never run the tank completely dry! An irregular supply of fuel can
cause engine misfiring and fuel could enter into the exhaust
system. The catalytic converter could then overheat and be
damaged. •

The [ CHECK] button performs the following functions:

With the ignition is switched off, the odometer and digital clock with
date disp lay can be switched on for a few seconds by pressing the
[CHECK] button=> fig. 6.
Sta rtin g t he A uto-Che ck se qu ence
The Auto-Check system=> page 28 consistently monitors certain
individual functions and componen ts of the vehicle when the igni­
tion is turned on and when the vehicle is moving.
With the ignition switched on, you can start the" Auto-Check
sequence" by pressing the [
CHECK I button. You can perform an
Auto -Check sequence both when the vehic le is at a standstill and
the ignition is switched on or when the veh ic le is mov ing not faster
than 3 mph (5 km/h).
Ca lling up th e dri ver inform ation
When a first priority symbol starts to flash=> page 28 or when a
defective light bulb=>
page 35, has been detected, you can press
the
! CHECK] button to display the driver information. For example:

If one of the turn signal light bulbs burn out, the turn signal will
flash twice as fast as normal. •
Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP)
The warning/indicator light monitors the electronic stabi­
lization program.
The warning/indicator light has the following functions :
• it flashes while you are driving , when the ESP is working .
• it illuminates when you switch on the ignition for approximately
2 seconds as a function check .
• it illuminates when there is a ma lfunction in the ESP.
• it illuminates after the battery has been disconnected.
• it illuminates continuous ly when the ESP is switched off.
• it illuminates if there is a malfunction in the ABS, since the ESP
is part of the ABS system.
If the ESP warning/indicator light i lluminates and stays on after you
have started the engine , this may mean that the control system has
temporari ly switched off the ESP. If this is case, you can reactivate
the ESP by switching the ignition o ff and then on again. The
warning/indicator light should go out to show that the system is
fully functional again.
If the battery terminals were disconnected and re-connected, the
vehic le was jump started or the battery is very weak, the ESP sensor
system goes through a learning process for the first few yards.
During this time, the indicator light illuminates. It goes out as soon
as the learning process is comp lete .

Generator 0
T his warning/indicator light detects a malfunction in the
generator or in the vehicle's electrical system .
The D warning/indicator light illuminates when you switch on the
ign itio n and must go out after the engine has started.
If the
D warning/indicator light illuminates while you are driving,
you shou ld contact your authorized Audi dealer . Since the vehicle
battery is discharging, you should switch off any unnecessary elec ­
trical consumers (for example, the air conditioner) .

If the -t warning/indicator light (ma lfunction in the engine coo ling
system) in the instrument cluster shou ld illuminate~
page 31, stop
the vehicle and turn off the engine. The coo lant pump is not working
- this can cause engine damage! •
High beam ~D
The@:Dwarning/indicator light illuminates when the high beams are
on or when you use the headlight flasher. For more information
about using the high beams, see~
page 83. •
Electronic power control p
This warning/indi cator light monitors the electronic
power control.
The warning/indicator light (Electronic Power Control) il lumi-
nates when you switch on the ignition as a function check .

Defective light bulb warning The defective light bulb warning tells you when a vehicle
light bulb has become defective.
If a defective bulb has been detected by the system or a light bulb
burns out, the symbol with a message appears in the display to
tell you which bulb is burnt out and where it is located. For example:

After 5 seconds, the message disappears . If you want to reca ll the
message into the display, press the CHECK button .
There are three reasons why the defective bulb message would appear in the display:
• the light bu lb has burnt out~
page 302.
• the fuse is "blown"~ page 300, "Replacing a fuse" .
• the wire connection to the light bulb is defective .
Have the bulb replaced or the connection repaired by your autho­
rized Audi Service department .

Speed warning system
Overview
The spee d warning system helps you to keep your driving
speed below a set speed limit.

The speed warning system warns the driver if he exceeds a previ ­
ously stored maximum speed . A warning tone wi ll sound as soon as
the vehicle speed exceeds the set speed by about 3 miles per hour (3 km/hl. At the same time, a warning symbo l appears in the display
~fig.19.
The speed warning system has
two warning thre sh old s that func­
tion independently of each other and that have somewhat different
purposes :
Speed warning 1
You can use speed warning 1 to set the maximum speed while you
are driving . This setting will remain in effect un til you turn off the
ignition, assuming that you have not changed or reset the setting.
The speed warning symbol
C-~ (USA models)/ (Canada models) in
the warning 1 display appears when you exceed the maximum speed . It goes out when the speed falls below the stored maximum
speed. .,

battery to heat up very q uickly, which could lead to damage or
explo sion and per sonal injury .
• When a battery is charged , it produces hydrogen gas whic h i s
explo sive and could cause per son al injury .
• Always keep the battery well out of the re ach of children.
• Before work i s done on the electrical system , di sconne ct the
negative ground cable .
• Before per forming any work on the ele ctri cal system , switch off
the engine and ignition as well as any electrical equipment. The
negative cable on the battery must be disconnected .
If you are just
going to replace a light bulb , then it is enough to switch off the
light s.
• Before disconnecting the battery , switch off the anti -theft
alarm system! Otherw ise you will set off the alarm .
• When di sconne cting the battery , fir st di sconnect the negative
c able and then the positive cable .
• Before reconnecting the battery , make sure all electrical
c onsumers are sw itched off . Reconnect the posit ive cable first and
then the negative cable. Never interchange the cables -this could
start a fire !
• Never charge a frozen or a thawed -out battery. It could
e xplode! If a battery has frozen , then it must be replaced. A
discharged batte ry can freeze over at 32 °F (0 °C ).
• Make sure the vent hose is always attached to the opening on
the side of the battery.
• Never use batteries which are damaged . There is the danger of
an explosion! Alway s replace a damaged battery.

• I f your vehicle is going to stand for a long period of time without
being dr iven, protect the battery from "freezing" otherwise it wil l be
damaged and wi ll then have to be replaced .•

Replacing a fuse
A problem in the electrical system may be caused by a
blown fuse.

- Switch off the ignition and the electrical component
affected.
Carefully pry the face cover off the instrument panel
using the ignition key or a screwdriver~ fig . 223 . -
Check the fuse listing on the next pages to find out which
fuse belongs to the component which has failed
~ page 301 , "Fuse list".
- Remove the blown fuse with the plast ic clip provided.
The clip is located on the holder in the fuse box.
- Replace a blown fuse (recognizable by the melted metal
strip inside) w ith a fuse of the
some amperage.
- Firmly snap the cover back onto the instrument panel
face.
The various electrical circuits are protected by fuses . The fuses a re
clustered in a centralized unit. The unit is located behind the face
panel at the end of the instrument panel.
Two spare fuses and a sticker identifying the fus es are located on
the inside of the fuse box cover.
& WARNING
Never replace a fuse with one that has a higher amperage rating.
• A fuse with a too high amperage could damage the electrical
part and cause a fire.
(D Note
• On no account should fuses be repaired (e.g . patched up with tin
foil or wire) as this may caus e se rious damage elsewhere in the elec ­
trical circuit or cause fire.
• If a fuse blows repeatedly, do not keep replacing it. Instead, have
the cause for the repeated short circuit or overload tracked and
fixed. _,,

The electric power windows and the electric seat adjusters are
protected with circuit breakers which reset automatically after the
circuit overload has been corrected .
[ i] Tips
• Whenever replacing a fuse, always consult the sticker on the
inside of the fuse panel cover. It contains the most up-to-date infor­
mation regarding the fuse arrangement . If in doubt, ask your autho­
rized Audi Service advisor.
• Some of the equipment items listed are optional or only avail­
able on certain model configurations. •
Bulbs
Replacing light bulbs
For your safety, we recommend that you have your autho­
rized Audi dealer replace burned out bulbs for you.
It is becoming increasingly more and more difficult to replace
vehicle light bulbs since in many cases, other parts of the car must first be removed before
you are able to get to the bulb. This applies
especially to the light bulbs in the front of your car which you can
only reach through the engine compartment.
Sheet metal and bulb holders can have sharp edges that can cause
serious cuts, and parts must be correctly taken apart and then prop­
erly put back together to help prevent breakage of parts and long
term damage from water that can enter housings that have not
been properly resealed.
For your safety, we recommend that you have your authorized Audi
dealer replace any bulbs for you, since your dealer has the proper
tools, the correct bulbs and the expertise.
Gas discharge lamps (xenon lights)*:
Due to the high electrical voltage, have the bulbs replaced by a qual­
ified technician. Headlights with xenon light can be identified by the
high voltage sticker.
& WARNING
Contact with high-voltage components of the electrical system
and improper replacement of gas discharge (Xenon) headlight
bulbs can cause serious personal injury and death.
• Xenon bulbs are pressurized and can explode when being
changed.
• Changing Xenon lamps requires the special training, instruc­
tions and equipment.
• Only an authorized Audi dealer or other qualified workshop
should change the bulbs in gas discharge lamps.
& WARNING
There are parts with sharp edges on the openings and on the bulb holders that can cause serious cuts .
