Indicator lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
blink or turn on. They indicate functions or mal
functions¢ &.
Messages may appear with some indicator lights .
A warning signal will sound at the same time.
The messages disappear again after a short time.
To display a message again, press the

page 11. If several malfunctions occur,
each of the indicator/warning lamps will be dis
p layed in succession for about two seconds at a
time.
Some indicators lights in the display can turn on
in several colors.
8_ WARNING
- Failure to heed warning lights and other im
portant vehicle information may resu lt in
serious personal injury or vehicle damage.
- Whenever sta lled or stopped for repa ir,
move the vehicle a safe distance off the
road, stop the engine, and turn on the emer
gency flasher ¢

-The engine compartment of any motor vehi
cle is a potentially hazardous area. Before
you check anything in the engine compart
ment, stop the engine and let it cool down.

BRAKE /((J) ) Brake system
The light illuminates when the ignition is switch
ed on. It goes out after the engine has been
started. This indicates that the brake warning light is functioning properly.
If the brake warning light does not light up
when the engine is cranking, there may be a
malfunction in the electrical system. In this
case, contact your authorized Audi dealer.
If the brake system warning/indicator light turns
on, there is a brake system malfunction.
1111 (USA models)/ . (Canada models) Stop

If the indicator light turns on and the message
appears, proceed as follows :

- If the indicator light and the message appear
while driving, the emergency braking function
may not be available. It may not be possible to
set the parking brake or release it once it has
been set . Seek professional assistance .
(USA models): If the warning light

workshop to have all brake pads inspected

When the light comes on, an audible warning sig
nal is also given .
A WARNING
--Always observe the warnings in
c:> page 191, before opening the hood and
checking the brake fluid.
- Driving with low brake fluid is a safety haz
ard. Stop the car and get professional assis
tance .
- If the
1111 (USA models) . (Canada mod
els) brake system indicator light turns on to
gether with the ABS and ESC indicator
lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function may
have failed. Functions that stabilize the ve
hicle are no longer available. This could
cause the vehicle to swerve and increase the
risk of sliding. Drive carefully to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or other qualified
workshop and have the malfunction correct
ed.
- If the brake warning/indicator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the park
ing brake is released, or lights up while you
are driving, the fluid level in the brake fluid
reservoir is too low. If you believe that it is
safe to do so, proceed immediately at low
speed to the nearest authorized Audi dealer
or qualified workshop and have the brake
system inspected.

-Always keep in mind that afte r several brake
applications, you will need greater pressure on the brake pedal to stop your vehicle. Do
not rely on strained brakes to respond with
maximum stopping power in cri tical situa
t ions . You must allow for increased bra king
distan ces. The extr a dis tance used up by
fa ding b rakes c ould lead to an acciden t.

The warning/indicator light monitors the elec
tromechanical parking brak e.
If the i nd icator lig ht . (USA models)/ . (Cana
da models) turns on , the parking b rake was set .
The warning/indicator light will go o ut when the
parking brake is re leased.

tion: Vehicle parked too steep
If th e i nd ic ator lig ht blinks and t he message ap
pea rs, there is not enoug h bra king power to keep
the vehicle from roll ing. The b rakes have over
heate d. The veh icle cou ld roll away even on a
sma ll incline .
Press brake pedal to relea se parking brake

Please release parking brake
To release the parking brake manually, press the
brake peda l and press the button(®) at the same
time . The par king brake on ly releases automat i
cally if the dr iver's safety be lt is fastened.

This warning/indicator light reminds you to put
on your safety belt.
The . war ning/ indicator light illum inates when
the ignit io n is switched on to remind the dr iver
and (on USA models only) any front passenger to
put on the safety be lt. Addit ionally, an acoust ic
warning (gong) w ill also sound.

te ry is discharging, tur n off a ll unnecessary elec
trical e quipme nt such as th e r adio . Seek profes
s iona l assistance if the battery cha rg e l eve l is too
l ow .
(•) Low battery: Battery will be charged while
driving
If the indicato r light turns on and the message
appears, there may be limited sta rting ab ility.
If this message t urns off afte r a little while, the
battery charged enough while dr iv ing .

appears, the re is an elect ron ic steer ing column
lock malfunct ion.
Drive to your au th ori zed Aud i dea ler immediately
to have the malfunction corrected .
A WARNING
Your vehicle must not be towed in the event
of a malfunct ion in the elect ron ic steer ing col
um n lock because i t ca nn ot be stee red due to
t he locke d steering.
If it i s towed w ith the
steering locked, there is the risk of an acci
dent .

If the b1 ind icator light blinks while driving , the
E SC or ASR (A nti-Slip Regulat ion) is actively regu
l ati ng .
If the
b1 ind icator light turns on, the system has
swit ched the ESC off . In this case, yo u can switch
t h e ign ition off and t hen on to sw itch the ESC on
again. The indica tor ligh t turns off when the sys
tem is functioning fu lly.

e lectronic differe ntia l lock is malfunc tioning. This
also ca us es the ESC to mal func tion. The br akes
sti ll fu nct ion with thei r no rma l powe r, b ut ABS is
not active.

e ls) brake syste m indic ator ligh t turn s on to
gether with the ABS and ESC ind icator lights,
the ABS/ESC regulat ing f unction may have

no longer availab le. This could cause the vehi

ABS/(@) Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL) .
The warning/indicator light fJ]l (USA models)/
ti] (Canada models) will come on for a few sec
onds when the ignition is switched on. The light
will go out after an automatic check sequence is
completed.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/indicator light does not illuminate
when you switch the ign it ion on.
- The warning/indicator light does not go out af
ter a few seconds.
- The warning/indicator light illuminates while driving .
The ESC indicator light also illuminates if there is
a ma lfunction in the ABS . The message

also appears in the instrument cluster display
and a warning tone sounds.
The brake system will still respond even with
out the assistance of the ABS system. See your
authorized Audi dealer as soon as possible to re
store full braking performance.

Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake warning light¢ page 15 and the ABS
warn ing illuminate
together there may be a mal
function in the ABS, and there may also be a mal
function in the brake system itself¢,& .
The ABS
will not work and you will notice a change in
braking response and performance.
In the event of a malfunction in the brake sys
tem
the warning/indicator light 1111 (USA mod
els)/. (Canada models) in the instrument clus

Malfunction in the electronic differential
lock (EDL)
The ED L works together with the ABS . The ABS
warn ing light will come on if there is a malfunc
tion in the EDL system

thorized Audi dealer as soon as possible.
Instruments and indicator lights
A WARNING
-If the fJ]l (USA mode ls)/ tl] (Canada mod
els) warn ing light does not go out, or if it
comes on while dr iv ing, the ABS system is
not working prope rly . The vehicle can then
be stopped only with the standard brakes
(without ABS) . Yo u will not have the protec
tion ABS provides. Contact your authorized
Audi dea ler as soon as possible.
- USA models: If the 1111 warning light and
the
fJ]l warning light come on together, the
rear whee ls cou ld lock up first under hard
braking. Rear whee l lock-up can cause loss
of vehicle control and an accident. Have your
veh icle repa ired immediately by your au
thorized Audi dealer or qualified workshop.
Drive slowly and avoid sudden, hard brake
applications .
-Canada models: If the brake warning light
• and the ABS warning light
ti] come on
together, the rear wheels could lock up first
under hard bra king. Rear wheel lock-up can
cause loss of vehicle contro l and an acci
dent . Have your vehicle repai red immediate
ly by your authorized Audi dealer or quali
fied workshop . Drive slow ly and avoid sud
den, hard brake applications.
tli I !i: Safety systems
The fl (USA models) ;fll (Canada models) indi
cator light monitors the safety systems (e.g. a ir
bags, pretensioners) and illuminates for a few
seconds each time you switch the ignition on .
-
If the II (USA models)/E,I (Canada mode ls) in
dicator light does not go out, or if it illuminates
wh ile you are driving, or if it starts to blink, then
there is a malfunction somewhere in the system.
If the light does not illum inate when you sw itch
the ignition on, this also means there is a mal
function.
A WARNING ~
If you have a malfunction in the safety sys-
tems, contact your a uthorized Audi dea ler im
mediately. Otherwise the safety systems may
not work properly in an accident.

EPC Electronic power control
This warning/indicator ligh t monitors the elec
tronic power control .
The~ warning/indicator light (Electronic Power
Control) illum inates when yo u sw itch the ignition
on as a function check.

while you are dr iv ing, then the re is a malfunc
tion in the eng ine electronics. Have the mal
function corrected as soon as possible by your
author ized A udi dealer or a qualified re pair fa
cility.
0 Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
T he Malfunc tion Ind ica tor Lamp (M IL) is part o f
the On-Board Diagnos tic (O BD II ) system . The

indicates that the MIL is working p roperly.

The cigarette lighter only works when the ig
nition is sw itched on. Incorrect usage can lead
to ser ious injuries or burns. For this reason,
children should never be left unattended in
the vehicle because this increases the risk of
injury.

connect electrical accessories to it .
Storing
General overview
_& WARNING
- Always remove objects from the instrument
panel. Any items not put away could slide
around inside the vehicle while dr iv ing or
when accelerating or when applying the brakes or when dr iv ing aro und a corner .
- When you a re driv ing make sure that a ny
thing yo u may have placed in the ce nter con
so le or ot her storage locations can not fall
o ut into the footwells. In case of sudden

braking you would not be ab le to brake, de
press the clutch or accelerate.
- Any pieces of clothing that you have hung
up must not interfere with the driver's view .
The coat hooks are designed only for light
weigh t clothing. Never hang any cloth ing
w ith ha rd, pointed or heavy objects in the
pockets on the coat hooks. During sudden
braking or in an accident -espec ially if the
airbag is deployed -these objects cou ld in
jure any p assengers inside the vehicle.
