9:::1: Engine oil pressure
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol re­
quires immediate service or repair . Driving with a
low-oil-pressure indication is likely to inflict se­
vere damage to the engine.
• Turn off engin e! Oil pressure too low
If the indicator light t urns on and the message
appears, the oil pressure is too low.
• Pull
off the road.
• Stop the vehicle .
• Turnoff the engine.
• Check the engine oil level ¢ page 195.
• If the engine oil level is too low, add engine oil
¢ page 195. Make sure that the o il pressure
warning symbol. appears no longe r in the
display before you start dr iving again.
• If the engi ne oil leve l is correct a nd the ind ica­
tor light st ill turns on, turn the eng ine
off and
do not continue driving . Seek p rofess ional as ­
s istance .
(D Tips
- The engine oil pressure symbol. is not
an indicator for a low engine oil level. Do
not rely on it. Instead , check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, prefe rably
each time you refuel, and always before
going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication

requires oil refill or workshop service with ­
out delay. Do not wait until the red oil pressure warning. starts to flash before
you respond to the low oil leve l warning

-L Engine cooling system
A malfunction in the engine cooling system must
be repaired as soon as possible .
• Turn off eng ine and check coolant level
If the indicator light turns on and the message
appears, the coolant temperature is too high o r
the coo lant leve l is too low.
• Pull
off th e roa d.
• Stop the vehicle.
• Tur noff the engine .
• Check coolant leve l

• Continue dr iv ing o nly after the engine coolant
warning/ indicator light goes out .
• Contact your autho rized Aud i dealer for assis-
tance if necessa ry.
If the engi ne coo lant level is correct, t hen the ra ­

• Coolant temperature! Let engine run with
v ehicle stationary
If the indicator ligh t turns on and the message
appears, let the eng ine run at id le for a few mi ­
nutes to coo l down.

There is a malfunction with the windshield wip­
ers.
Drive to your authorized Audi dealer immediately
to have the malfunction corrected.
~/ }D 10$ Defective light bulb warning
If the r.:J indicator light turns on, a bulb has
failed. The message indicates the location of the
bulb.
- If the Im indicator light also turns on, then a
fog light has failed. The position of the indica­
tor light corresponds with the location on the
vehicle.
- If the II indicator light also turns on, then a
rear fog* light has failed. The position of the in­
dicator light corresponds with the location on
the vehicle.
This warning can also occur if the light switch is
in an unengaged position between two symbols.
Vehicle lights: System fault!
If the message appears, there is a malfunction in
the headlights or light switch.
Drive to your authorized Audi dealer immediately
to have the malfunction corrected.
Instruments and indicator lights
A WARNING
-Light bulbs are pressurized and could ex­
plode while they are being changed causing
serious personal injury.
-
- Work with due care when handling the high­
voltage section of gas discharge (xenon)
lights*. Failure to do so could result in death
. . . or serious inJury.
@ Tips
Have the bulb replaced or the connection re­
paired by your authorized Audi Service depart­
ment.
i,0 Headlight range control
Applies to vehicles: with headlight range control
II Headlight range control defective !
If the symbol II illuminates, the dynamic head­
light range control is no longer working properly.
Have the system checked and repaired at your au­
thorized Audi dealer.
§0 Adaptive Light
Applies to vehicles: with adaptive ligh t
rlJ Audi adaptive light: defective
If the indicator light turns on and this message
appears, there is a malfunction in the adaptive
light system. The headlights still function.
Go to an authorized dealership to have the head ­
lights or the control unit for the adaptive light re­
paired.
@. o Light /rain sen sor
Applies to vehicles: with light/ra in sensor
II Automatic headlights/ automatic wipers
defective
If the indicator light turns on and this message
appears, the light/rain sensor is not functioning
correctly.
For safety reasons the low beams are turned on
permanently with the switch in

the possibility to reset the oi l change schedu le af ­
ter having performed an oil change according to
Audi specif ications. Select
ICARI function button
> Service interval display > Reset oil change in­
terval
or I CAR ! function button > Car systems*
control button > Servicing & checks > Reset oil
change interval.
(D Note
- Only reset the oil change d isp lay when you
have completed an oil change .
- If you d isconnect the battery terminals, no
calculations can be made for the service in­
terval display during this t ime and no serv­
i ce reminder will appear . Remember that
obse rv in g the proper serv ice intervals is vi­
tally impor tant to extending the life of your
vehicle, particularly the engine, and main­
taining its value. Even if the mi leage driven
i s low, the maximum period of one year
from one service to the next must not be ex­
ceeded.
(D Tips
The information in the Service Reminder re­
mains stored even when the veh icle battery is
disconnected.
On Board Diagnostic
System (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ¢-4 in the
instrument cluster is part of the On-Board Diag ­
nostic (OBD II) system.
The warning/indicator light illuminates when the
ignition is switched on and goes out after the en­
gine starts and the idle has stabilized. This indi­
cates that the MIL is working properly.
If the light does not go out after the engine is
started, or illuminates while you are driving, a malfunct ion may exist in the engine system. If
the light illuminates, the catalytic converter
could be damaged.
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoiding
sustained high speeds and/or rapid accelerations)

If t he light illuminates, the electronic speed lim­
ite r may also be ma lf u nctioning. For more infor­

An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate ¢

On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board D iagnost ics monitors the components
of your emission control system. Each monito red
component in your engine system has been as­
signed a code. In case of a malfunction, the com­
ponent will be ident ified and the fault stored as a
code in the control module memory.
T he MIL light may also illum inate if there is a
leak in the on-board fuel vapo r recovery system .
If the light illuminates after a refueling, stop the
vehicle and make sure the fuel filler cap is prop­
erly closed
¢ page 188.
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stor­
ed data can only be displayed using special diag­
nostic equipment (generic scan tool for OBD).
In order to connect the spec ial diagnostic equip­
ment, push the plug into the Data Lin k Connec tor
(DLC). The DLC is located to the right of the hood
release
¢ fig. 18.
Your authorized Audi deale r or qualified work­
shop can interpre t the code and perform the nec-

.,. To tilt the sunroof, press the switch briefly .
• To close the sunroof, pull the switch briefly .
• To set an intermediate position, press/pull the
switch until the roof reaches the desired posi­
tion.
After the ignition is switched off, you can still op ­
erate the sunroof for about 10 minutes . As soon
as the driver's or passenger's door is opened, the
switch is inoperative .
Sun blind
The sun blind can be opened and closed manually in any position .
A WARNING
Pay careful attention when closing the sun­
roof - otherwise serious injury could result!
For this reason, always remove the ignition
key when leaving the vehicle.
(D Note
Always close your sunroof when leaving your
veh icle. Sudden rain can cause damage to the
interior equipment of your vehicle, particular­
ly the electronic equipment.

Emergency closing of the panoramic tilting
sunroof
If the sunroof detects an object in its path when
it is closing, it will open again automatically . In
this case, you can close the roof with the power
emergency closing function.
• Within five seconds after the sunroof opens au­
tomatically, pull the switch until the roof
closes .
Valet parking
Applies to vehicles: wi th valet parkin g function
The valet parking feature protects the luggage
compartment from unau thorized access.

You can switch the "valet parking function" on
when someone else is parking your vehicle. When
the function is switched on, the vehicle can be driven, locked and un locked using the master key,
but access to the luggage compartment is not
permitted.
• Take the mechanical key out of the master key

• Activate c::> fig. 33 the "valet parking" feature by
pressing the
! VA LET I button . The indicator light
in the switch illuminates.
• Close the glove compartment and lock it with

buzzer sounds as long as t he driver 's door is

between the inside and outs ide. They will
clea r shortly after switching them on. T his
does not affect t he service li fe of the light­
i ng.

The lever operates the turn signals, the high
b eams and the headlight flasher.

Using the proper engine o il is important for the
functionality and service life of the engine. Your
engine was factory-fi lled w ith a high-quality o il
which can usually be used throughout the ent ire
year.

cover damage or malfunctions due to failure
to follow recommended ma intenance and use
requ irements as set forth in the Audi Ow ne r's
Manual and Wa rranty
& Ma intenance booklet .
- Use only a high quality eng ine oil t hat ex-
pressly comp lies w ith the Audi o il quality
standard specified for your vehicle's e ngine .
Using a ny other oil can cause se rious engine
damage.
- Do not mix any lubricants o r othe r addit ives
i nto the engine oil. Doing so can cause en ­
g ine damage.
(D Tips
If you need to add oil and there is none availa­
ble that meets the Audi o il quality standard
y o ur eng ine requires, you m ay add a total of
no more than 0.5 quart/li ter o f a h igh-quali ty
"synthet ic"oil that meets the fo llowing speci ­
fications .
- V ehicles wi th gasoline engine: AC EA A3 o r
API SM with a viscosity grade of SAE 0W- 30,
SAE SW -30 or SAE SW-40 .

has been approved for your vehicle, please

Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an ade­
quate amount of oil to lubricate and cool all of
its moving parts .
In order to provide effective lubrication and cool­
i n g of internal engine components, all interna l
combustion engines consume a certai n amount
of oil. O il consumption var ies from engine to en­
g ine and may change significant ly ove r the life of

the engine. Typically, eng ines with a specif ied
break-in period (see
¢ page 177) consume mo re
o il dur ing the b reak -in per iod than they consume
after oil consumption has stabili zed.
U nder normal cond itions , the rate of oi l con ­
s u mption depends on t he qu ality and viscosity of
the oil, the RPM (revolutions per minute) at
which the engine is operated, the ambient tem ­
perature and road condit ions. Further factors are
the amount of o il di lution from water condensa ­
tion or fuel residue and the ox idat ion level of the
o il. As any engine is s ubject to wear as mileage
builds up, t he oil consump tion may inc rease ove r
t ime unt il rep lacement of wo rn component s may
become necessary.
With a ll these va riab les coming into p lay, no
sta ndard ra te of oil consumpt ion can be estab­
li shed or spe cified . There i s no altern ative to reg­
u la r and freq uent checking o f the oil leve l, see
Note .
If the yellow e ngine oi l leve l wa rning symbo l El
in the instr ument cluster lights up, yo u should
chec k the o il level as soon as possible

A WARNING
Before you chec k anything in the eng ine com­
partment, always read and heed a ll WARN­
INGS¢ .&. in Working in the engine compart­
ment on page 191.

Driving with an insufficient oi l level is likely to
cause severe damage to the engine.
(D Tips
- The oil pressu re warning display. is not
an indicator of the oil level. Do not rely on
it . Instead, check the oil level in your en­
gine at regular intervals, preferably each
time you refuel, and always before going on a long trip.
- If you have the impression yo ur engine con­
sumes excessive amounts of oil, we r ecom-
mend that yo u consult an au tho rized Audi .,.

Checking and F ill in g
The brake fluid reservoir is located at the rear
partition of the engine compartment on t he left
side
c!,> page 193.
The fl uid level may drop slightly after some time
due to the automatic adjustment of the brake
pads. This is not cause for alarm.
If the b ra ke fluid level fal ls considerably below
the "MIN" mark, the brake warn ing/indicator
light (U.S. models:
1111 , Canadian models: . )
will come on
c!,> page 15 . Do not contin ue to oper­
ate the vehicle . The complete brake system
should be thoroughly checked by an author iz ed
Aud i dealer or qualified workshop and the cause
corrected . If the brake fluid level is too low, the
brake warning/ind icator light w ill illuminate .

The brake fluid reservoir is located under­
neath the cove r.
Changing brake fluid
Have the brake fluid changed by an experienced
technician .
Brake fluid absorbs moist ure from the a ir. If the
water content in the brake fluid is too high, cor­ rosion in the brake system may result after a peri­
od of time . The boiling point of the brake flu id
w ill also decrease conside rably and dec rease
b rak ing perfo rmance.
Therefore, the brake flu id must be changed
e ve ry
two year s.
Always use new brake fluid w hich con­
forms to Fede ral Motor Vehicle Standard "FMVSS
1 16 DOT 4".
The brake fluid rese rvoir can be difficult to reach,
therefo re , we recommend that you have the
b rake fluid changed by your author ized
Audi
dealer .
Your dealer has the correct too ls , the
right brake fluid and the know-how to do t his for
you.
A WARNING
- B rake fluid is poisonous. It must be stored
on ly in the closed original container out of
the reach of children!

- Brake fail ure can resu lt from o ld or inappro­
priate brake fluid. Observe these precau ­
tions:
- Use only b rake fluid that meets SAE spec i­
f ica tion
J 170 3 and conform s to Federa l
Motor Vehicle Standard 116. Always check
with yo ur autho rized Audi dea le r to make
su re you are using the correct brake fl uid.
The correct type of brake flu id is also ind i­
cated on the brake fluid reservoir.
- The brake fl uid must be new. Heavy use of
the brakes can cause a vapor lock if the
brake f luid is left in the system too long.
This can seriously affect the efficiency of
the brakes as well as your safety. This
could result in an acc ident.
(D Note
Brake fluid will damage the paint of your vehi­
cle.
@ For the sake of the env ironment
Because of the prob lem of prope r disposal of
brake fluid as well as the special tools re­
qu ired and the necessary expert ise, we rec­
omme nd that you have the brake flu id
changed by you r autho rized Aud i dea le r.
Battery
, General information
U nder normal operating conditions, the battery
i n your Audi does not need any maintenance.
Wi th
high outside temperatures or long daily
drives we recommend that you have the e lectro ­
lyte level checked by an a uth orized Aud i deale r o r

Wheels
Treadwear indicator
Original equipment tires contain
treadwear indicators in the tread
pattern, which are bars that are 1/ 16 inch (1 .6 mm) high and are
spaced evenly around the tire per­ pendicular to the running direc ­
tion ¢

wear indicators .
The tires have reached the mini­ mum tread depth
l) when they
have worn down to the treadwear
indicators. Replace the tires with
new ones ¢.&.
Wheel rotation
Rotating the wheels regularly is
recommended to ensure the tires
wear evenly. To rotate wheels, in ­
stall the wheels from the rear
axle on the front axle and vice ver ­
sa. This will allow the tires to have approximately the same
length of service life.
For unidirectional tires, make sure
the tires are installed according to
the running direction indicated on
the tire sidewall¢ page
231.

H idden damage
Damage to tires and rims can of ­
ten occur in locations that are hid­
den. Unusual vibrations in the ve­
hicle or pulling to one side may
indicate that there is tire damage.
Reduce your speed immediately .
Check the tires for damage. If no
damage is visible from the out­
side, drive slowly and carefully to
the nearest authorized Aud i deal­
er or authorized repair facility to have the vehicle inspected.
! WARNING
Tread that has worn too low or
different tread depths on the
tires can reduce driving safety.
This can especially have a nega­
tive effect on handling, on the risk aquaplaning when driving
through water, when driving
through curves and when brak ­
ing, which increases the risk of
an accident.
