Once the front passenger's door has been closed,
you cannot open it again from the outside. The
doo r can be opened from the inside by pulling
t he door hand le.

Electronic immobilizer
The immobilizer prevents your vehicl e from b eing
started by unauthor ized persons .
Inside the key there is a computer chip . This chip
automatically activates/deactivates the electron­ ic immobilizer .
Applies to vehicl es with ignition lock :
The electron ic immobilizer deactivates automati­
cally when you insert the remote control key into
the ignition lock . It activates again automatically
when you remove the remote control key from
the ignition lock .
Applies to vehicl es with conveni ence k ey :
If the remote control key is located inside the ve ­
h icle and you press the
! S TAR T ENGINE STOPI
button , the electronic immobilizer deactivates
automatically. If yo u switch the ignit ion off and
remove the remote control key from the vehicle,
the elec tronic immobili zer ac tivates again au to­
mat ically .
A WARNING
Always take the key with you when you leave
the vehicle . The key can disa rm the electron ic
engine immob ilizer and permit an unau thor­
i z ed person to start the eng ine and enable op­
eration of the veh icle systems such as power
w indow o r powe r su nroof leading to serious
personal inj ury .

adaptive light*
When switched on, adap tive ligh t ad ap ts to
curves in the road depending on the vehicle
speed and the steering ang le. This provides bet­
ter light ing through the curve. The system oper­
ates at speeds between approximately 6 mph
(10 km/h) and 68 mph (110 km/h).
Static cornering light* (vehicles with adaptive
li ght) -the corne ring light switches on at speeds
up to approximate ly 25 mph (40 km/h) when a
certain steering wheel angle is reached or when a
turn s ignal is act ivated . T he area to the side of
the ve hicle is illuminated better when turning .
The adaptive light and the cornering light only
funct io n when the switc h is in the AUTO position
(automat ic head lights*) .
A WARNING
- Daytime r unning lights and a utomat ic head­
lights* are only intended to as sist the driver .
T h ey do not re lieve the driver of his respon­
sibility to c heck t he hea dlights and to tur n
t hem on m anually ac co rding to the cur rent
light and visibili ty conditions. Fo r exam ple,
fog cannot be detected by the light sen­
sors*. So a lways sw itch on the headlights

under these weather conditi ons and when
driving in the dark.
- Crashes can happen when y ou cannot see
the road ahead and when you cannot be
seen by ot her moto rists. Always tu rn on the
headlights so that yo u ca n see ahead a nd so
that othe rs can see yo ur ca r from the back.
- Please obey all laws when usi ng the lighting
sys tems described here.

- The rain sensor is only intended to assist the
driver . T he driver is still responsible for
manually switching the wipers on according
to the v is ibility conditions .
- The w indshield may not be treated w ith wa­
ter -repelling windsh ield coating agents . Un ­
favorable condit ions, such as wetness, dark­
ness, low sun, can result in increased g lare.
Wiper b lade chatter is also possible.
- Properly functioning w indshield w iper
blades are required for a clear view and safe

-In the case of frost, check whether the
windsh ield wiper b lades are frozen to the

- Prior to using a car wash, the winds hield

position @). T his helps to prevent uninten­
tiona l switching on and damage to the
windshield wiper system .
@ Tips
-The windshield wipe rs are switched off
when the ignition is turned off. Activate the
windshield wipers after the ignition is
switched back on by moving the windsh ield
wiper lever to any pos it ion.
- Worn or dirty windshie ld w iper blades result
i n streaking. This can affect the rain sensor*
funct ion. Check your windshield wiper
blades regularly .
- The washer fluid nozzles of the windshield
washer system are heated at low tempera­
tures when the ignit ion is on.

- W hen stopping temporarily, (e .g. at a traffic
light) the set speed of the windshield wipers
is automat ica lly reduced by one speed.
Cleaning windshield wiper blades
Clean the windshie ld w iper blades when they be­
gin to leave streaks . Use a soft cloth and glass
cleaner to clean the windshield w iper blades .

Memory function
Description
Applies to vehicles: with memory function
The memory function allows you to quick ly and
eas ily store and recall personal seating profiles
for the driver. The memo ry function is operated
through the master key and the memory buttons
in the driver's door.
The driver's seating profile is stored and assigned
to the master key each time the veh icle is locked.
When you open the door, the seat profile is auto­
matically recalled. If two people use one vehicle,
it is recommended that each person always uses
"their own" master key.
Up to 2 seat profiles can be stored in the memory
buttons in the driver's door. Once they are stored,
these seat profiles can be selected at any time .
I n addition to the driver's seat settings, you can
also store and access the exterior mirror adjust­ ment settings* using the remote control key or
memory button.
Remote control key
Applies to vehicles: with seat memory
To assign the driver's seat settings to the remote
control key when locking the vehicle, the function
must be activated in the radio or

Switching the memory function on/off
.,. Press the ION/OFF ! button to switch the memo­
ry function on/off. The word
OFF lights up when
the memory function is switched off. Seat pro­
files are neither stored nor recalled .
Storing a seat profile
.,. Press the ISETI button. When the word SET
lights up, the memory is ready to store set­
tings.
• Press a memory button
(ill or [II) briefly. A tone
confirms that the settings were stored.
Accessing a seat profile
.,. If the driver's door is open and the ignition is
switched off, press the memory button .
.,. If the driver's door is closed or the ignition is
switched on, press and hold the memory but­
ton until the seat adjustment is complete.
.8, WARNING
- For safety reasons, the seat setting can only
be recalled when the vehicle is stationary -
otherwise you risk having an accident.
- In an emergency the recall procedure can be
cancelled by pressing the
ION/OFF I switch or
by tapping the memory buttons.

We recommend pressing the !AUTO I button and setting the temperature to 72 °F (22 °C).

Use the dials to adjust the temperature, the
b lower speed and the air distrib ution . The LED in
a button will light up when the function is
switched on. The settings are displayed for a few
seconds in the radio or MMI* display.
In vehicles with a 3-zone del uxe automat ic cl i­
mate control systems*, the dr iver and front pas­
senger side can be adjusted separately. The set·

IOFF I Switching the climate control system
on/off
The i OFF i button switches the climate contro l
system on or off. It also sw itches on when you
press the knob. Airflow from outside is blocked
when the climate control system is switched off.
IA/Cl Switching cooling mode on/off
The air is not coo led and humidity is not removed
when cool ing mode is switched off. This can
cause fog on the windows . The cooling mode is
switched off automatically at low outside tern· peratures. .,.

settings are applied to both the driver and front
p a ssenger, except fo r the seat hea ting/vent ila­
tion* . Synchronization switches off when you ad­
just the settings on the front passenger 's side .
You can a lso switch synchroniza tion on by press­
i ng a nd ho ld ing the knob on the driver's side.
Supplementary he ater
The supplementary heater warms the inter ior of
veh icles w ith flexible fuel engines more quickly.
The supplementa ry heater is cont rolled automat­
ically in the
Auto se tting.
Warm and cold
Upper cabin heating

The upper cabin area of the front seats can be
heated at three levels when the engine is run­
ning.
.. Press the~ button to switch the upper cabin
heating on. The LED illuminates.
.,. Press the~ button repeatedly until the LED
goes out to switch the upper cabin heating off .
A WARNING
-Individuals w ith reduced sensitivity to pain
or tempera ture could deve lop burns when
using the upper cabin heat ing. To reduce the
risk of injury, these ind ividuals shou ld not
use upper cabin heat ing.
- The output from the upper cabin heati ng
system may be very hot temporarily if the
air vents in the seats<=>
fig. 85 are covered
by clothing or other objects when the sys­
tem is switched on. This can cause burns on
unprotected sk in exposed directly to the
vents.

-For safety reasons, you should always park
your vehicle with the selector lever in P. Oth­
erwise, the vehicle could inadvertently roll
away .
- The rad iator fan can continue to run for up
to 10 m inutes even after you have turned
off the engine and removed the ignition key .
The rad iator fan can also turn on aga in if the
engine coolant heats up be cause of intense
s u nlight or heat bui ld-up in the engine com­
partment.
- Always ta ke t he key with you wheneve r you
leave your vehicle. Otherwise, the eng ine
cou ld be started or electrical eq uipment
s u ch as the power windows cou ld be operat ­
ed. This can lead to serious injury.
(D Note
If the e ng ine has been under heavy load for
an extended per iod, heat builds up in the en­
gine compartment after the engine is swi tch­
ed off -there is a risk of damag ing the engine.
Allow the engine to run at idle for about two
m inutes before switch ing it off.

This message appears and a war ning tone sounds
if you open the driver's door when the ignition is
switched on.
No ke y ide ntifi ed
This message appears when the
I STAR T ENGIN E STOP I button is pressed if t here
i s no master key inside the vehicle o r if the sys­
tem does not recogni ze it. For example, the mas­
ter key ca nnot be recognized if it is covered by an
object (e .g . alum inum br ie f case) which
screens
the radio signal. Electronic devices such as cell
phones can also interfere w ith the rad io signa l.
Press br ake pedal to sta rt engine
This message appears if you do not press the
b rake peda l to s tart the engine.
Shift to N or P to start engine
Dr ivi ng
This message appears when attempt ing to start
t h e engine if the se lector lever for the automatic
transmission is not in the P or N position. The en ­
gine can on ly be started w ith the selector in
these positions.
El I s the key in the vehicle?
T his mess age appears if the mas ter key is re­
moved from the vehicle wi th the e ngine runn ing .
If the master key is no longer in the ve hicle, you
cannot switch on the ignition after stopping the
engine and you also cannot start the engine
again . Moreover, you cannot lock the vehicle from
t h e outside with the key.

This message appears for safety reasons along
with a warning signal. It appea rs if the selector
lever for the automatic transmission is not in the
P position when switch ing off the ignition. Move
the selector lever to the P position, otherwise the
vehicle is not secured against rolling away. You
also cannot lock the vehicle us ing the locking
button* on the door handle o r us ing t he remote
key .
Convenience key defe cti ve! Use ign ition lock
This message appears if the engine must be
started or stopped using the ign ition key and not

other and that have somewhat different purpos ­

speed while yo u are driving. This setting w ill re­

suming that you have not c hanged or reset the
setting .

S toring wa rn ing 2 is recommended if you always
want to be reminded of a certain speed, for ex ­
ample when you are trave ling in a co unt ry that
has a genera l maxim um speed limit, or if you do
not want to exceed a specified speed for w inter
tires .

A WARNING
Following other vehicles too closely increases
the risk of collisions and ser ious personal in ­
jury.
- Setting short distances to the traffic ahead
reduces the time and distance available to
br ing your vehicle to a safe stop and makes
it even mo re necessary to pay close atten­
tion to traffic.
- Always obey applicable traffic laws, use
good judgment, and select a safe following
distance for the traffic, road and weather
condit ions.
