-When switching the ignition on, the needles
in the instrument cluster swing upward
briefly.
- The illumination for the instrument cluster
lights up whenever you switch on the igni­
tion with the
vehicle headlights off. As the
daylight fades, the instrument cluster illu­
mination likewise dims automatically and
will go out completely when the outside
light is very low . This feature is meant to re­
mind you to switch on the headlights when
outside light conditions become poor.
8 Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coolant
gauge¢ page 8, fig. 3@ on ly
works when the ign ition is on . To prevent dam­
age to your engine, please note the following im­ portant points:
Engine cold
If the needle is at or close to the bottom of the
gauge, the engine has not yet reached its operat­
ing temperature. Avoid high engine speeds,
heavy engine loads, and heavy throttle applica­
tions .
Normal temperature
When the engine has reached its operating tem ­
perature, the needle will move to the middle of
the gauge and remain there. If the engine is
working hard at high outside temperatures, the
needle may move higher on the gauge . This is not
a cause for concern as long as the . warning
li ght i n the instrument cluster display does not il­
luminate . If the . warning lig ht in the instru­
ment cluster display flashes, this can mean one
of two things : either the coolant
temperature is
too high, or the coolant
level is too low

A WARNING
-Always observe the warning in ¢ page 193,
before opening t he hood and checking the
engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dr ipping from the engine compartment. You
cou ld burn yourself. Let the engine cool off
firstsothatyoucannothearo rseeany
steam or engine coo lant.
0 Note
- Mounting additional lights or accessories in
front of the air inlets reduces the cooling ef­
fect of the radiator. At h igh outside temper­
atu res or high engine load, the engine could
overheat.
- The front spoiler has been designed to prop­
erly distribute the cooling air when the vehi­
cle is moving. If the spoiler is damaged, this
could reduce the cooling effect and the en­
gine could then overheat. Ask your author­
ized Audi dealer for assistance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter )
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM (revo­
lutions per minutes).
If engine RPM drops below 1,500, you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area at
the end of the scale indicates maximum permis­
sible eng ine RPM after the break-in period. Be­
fore reaching this area, move the selector lever
to position D/5 or ease your foot off the accelera­
tor pedal.

should only briefly be in the red zone: you
could damage your eng ine! The beginning of
the red zone varies depending on the engine.

Upshifting early saves fuel and reduces en­
gine noise.

The !SET I button performs the following func­
tions:
Switching on time, date, temperature
display and odometer
The display appears for approximately 30 sec­
onds when you press the
ISETI button¢ fig . 4
with the ignition off.
Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system constantly monitors cer­
tain indiv idual functions and components of the
vehicle when the ignition is turned on and when
the vehicle is moving .
With the ignition turned on, you can start the
"Auto-Check sequence" by pressing the
! SET I but­
ton. You can perform an Auto-Check sequence
when the vehicle is stat ionary and the ignition is
turned on or when the vehicle is moving slower
than 3 mph (5 km/h).
In addition, the number of keys initialised for
your vehicle is displayed .
L2 3/3 means that
th ree keys have been initialised . This feature e na­
bles used car buye rs to make su re they have re­
ceived all of the keys.
If you are given only two keys , for instance , you
should take the veh icle and the existing keys to
an authorized Audi dealer to have the missing key
disabled. It is also important to notify your insur­
ance company about the loss.
Setting the speed warning
By pressing the ISETI button briefly, you can set
threshold 1 of the speed warning wh ile you are
driv ing

9=:1: Engine oil pressure
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol re­
quires immediate service or repair . Driving with a
low-oil-pr essure indication is likely to inflict se­
vere damage to the engine.
• Turn off engine! Oil pressure too low
If the indicator lig ht t urns on and the message
appears, the oi l pressu re is too low.
~ P ull off the road.
~ Stop t he vehicle .
~ Turnoff the engine.
~ Check the engine oil level¢ page 197 .
~ If the engine oil leve l is too low, add engine oi l

(D Tips
- The engine oil pressure symbol. is not
an indicator for a low engine oil level. Do
not rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, preferably each time you refuel, and always before
going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication

requires oil refill or workshop service with ­
out delay . Do not wait until the red oil
pressure warning. starts to flash before
you respond to the low oil level warning

A malfunction in the engine cooling system must
be repaired as soon as possible .
• Turn off engine and check coolant level
If the indicator light turns on and the message
appea rs, the coo lant tempe rat ure is too high o r
t h e coo lant leve l is too low.

~ Stop the vehicle.
~ Tur noff th e engine.
~ Check coolant leve l¢ page 199 .

Warm and cold
Climate control system
Description
The climate control system warms, cools and
adds humidity to the air in the veh icle inter ior. It
is the most effective when the windows and pow­
er top are closed. If there is a bui ld-up of heat in­
side the vehicle, ventilation can help to speed up
the cooling process.
I n all heating mode functions except
defrost, the
b lower only switches to a higher speed once the
engine coolant has reached a certain tempera­
ture .
Condensat ion from the cooling system can drip
and form a puddle of water under the veh icle.
This is normal and does not mean there is a leak.
P ollutant filt er
The pol lutant filte r removes pollutants such as
dust and pollen from the a ir.
The air pollutants filter must be changed at the intervals specif ied in your Warranty
& Mainte­
nance booklet, so that the a ir cond it ioner can
properly work.
If you drive your vehicle in an area with high air pollut ion, the filter may need to be changed
more frequently than specified i n your Aud i War­
ranty
& Maintenance booklet. If in doubt, ask
your author ized Audi Service Advisor for advice.
Ke y cod ed setting s
The climate control settings are automatically
stored and assigned to the remote control key
that is in use . These sett ings are different whe n
the powe r top is open or closed.
_& WARNING
Reduced visibility is dangerous and can ca use
accidents.

- For safe driving it is very important that all
w indows be free of ice, snow and condensa­
tion.
- Completely familiarize yourself with the
proper use and function of the heating and
ventilation system and especially how to de­
fog and defrost the windows .
- Never use the windshield wiper/washer sys­
tem in freezing weather until you have
warmed the windshield first, using the heat­
ing and vent ilation system . The washe r solu­
tion may freeze on the windshield and re­
duce visibility.
(U;) Note
- If you suspect that the air conditioner has
been damaged, sw itch the system off to
avoid furthe r damage and have it inspected
by a q ualified dealership .
- Repa irs to the Aud i air cond itioner requ ire
special techn ica l know ledge and spec ial
tools. Contact an a uthorized Audi dea ler fo r
assistance .
@ For the sake of the environment
By reduc ing the amo unt of fuel you use, you
a lso red uce the amount of pollutants emitted
into the air.
(D Tips
- Keep the a ir intake slots (in front of the
windshield) free from ice, snow and debr is
in order to maintain the proper function of
the climate control system .
- The energy managemen t sys tem may sw itch
the seat heating * or rear window defroster
off temporarily. These systems are available
again as soon as the energy balance has
been restored.
- Air escapes through vents under the rear
window. When placing items of clothing on
the luggage compartment cover, ensure
that the openings are not covered.

.. Push the emergency key¢ fig. 89 fully into the
adapt er. Make sure that th e Audi rings are fac­
ing up .
.. Press the eme rgency key in the adapter down
until i t latches audibly .
.. Insert the adapter with the emergency key for ­
ward into the ignition switch. The engine can
now be started as usual.
('O Tips
The emergency key should not be stored in­
side the vehicle .
Stopping the engine
Applies to: vehicles with ig ni tion lock
.. Bring the vehicle to a full stop .
.. Automatic transmission: Move the selector lev­
er to the P or N position .
.. Press on the ignition key. The engine is turned
off.
.. You can now remove the key .
Steering lock
The steering locks when you remove the ignition
key. The locked steering helps prevent vehicle
theft.
Emergency off
If it is necessary in unusual circumstances , the
engine can be switched off while the vehicle is
moving . The engine will be switched off if you
press on the key for an extended period.
A WARNING ,-
- Never turn off the engine before the vehicle
has come to a complete stop. The full func­
tion of the brake booster and the power
steering is not guaranteed. You must use
more force to turn or brake if necessary . Be­
cause you cannot steer and brake as you
usually would, this could lead to crashes
and serious injuries.
- For safety reasons, you should always park
your vehicle with the selector lever in P.
Otherwise, the vehicle could inadvertently
roll away .
Driving
-The radiator fan can continue to run for up
to 10 minutes even after you have turned
off the engine and removed the ignition key.
The radiator fan can also turn on again if the
engine coolant heats up because of intense
sunlight or heat build-up in the engine com­
partment.
- Always take the key with you whenever you
leave your vehicle. Otherwise, the engine
could be started or electrical equipment
such as the power windows could be operat­
ed. This can lead to serious injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring as­
sistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote trans­
mitter, preventing people from escaping
from the vehicle on their own in the event of an emergency. Depending on the time of
year, people inside the vehicle can be ex­ posed to very high or very low tempera ­
tures .

If the engine has been under heavy load for
an extended period, heat builds up in the en­
gine compartment after the engine is switch ­
ed off -there is a risk of damaging the engine.
Allow the engine to run at idle for about two
minutes before switching it off.

No key identified
This message appea rs when the
I S TAR T ENGINE STOPI button is pressed if the re
is no master key ins ide the ve hicle or if the sys­
tem does not recognize it . For examp le, the mas ­
ter key cannot be recognized if it is cove red by an
D riving
object (e .g. al uminum brief case) which screens
t h e radio signal. Electronic devices such as ce ll
phones can a lso interfe re with the radio signal.
Pre ss brake pedal to start engine
T h is message appears if you do not p ress the
bra ke peda l to s tart t he engine.
Shift to N or P to start engine
This message appears w hen attempting to start
the engine if the se lector lever for the automatic
transm ission is not in the P or N position. The en­
gine can on ly be started with the se lector in
these positions .
I!! Is the key in the vehicle?
This message appears if the mas ter key is re ­
moved from the veh icle with the engine r unning .
If the master key is no longer in the vehicle, you
cannot sw itch on the ign ition after stopping the
engine a nd you also cannot start the engine
again . Moreover, you cannot lock the vehicle
from the o uts ide with the key .
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away. Doo rs
do not lock if le ver is not in P.
This message appears for safety reasons along
with a warning signal. It appears if the selector l ever for the automat ic transmission is not in the
P position when switch ing off the ign ition. Move
t h e se lector lever to the P position, otherw ise the
vehicle is no t secured against roll ing away. Yo u
also cannot lock the vehicle us ing t he lock ing
button * on t he doo r handle o r using t he remo te
k ey.
Convenienc e key defective! Use ignition lock
This message appears if the engine must be
started or stopped using the ignition key and not

Trailer towing
Tire pr essure
When tow ing a tra iler, inflate the tires of yo ur
veh icle to the tire pressure listed under " Fu ll
load" on the label ¢
page 217. Inflate trai ler
tires to trai ler and tire manufacturers' specifica­
tions.
Lights
The headlight settings should be chec ked with
the trailer attached before driving off . Check to
make sure both vehicle and trailer lights are
working properly.
Safety chains
Be s ure t railer safety chains are properly connect­
ed from the trailer to the hitch on the vehicle .
L eave enough slack in the chains to permit turn ­
ing corners. When you install safety chains, make
sure they wi ll not drag on the road when you are
driving.
The chains shou ld cross under the trailer tongue
to prevent it from dropping in case of separation
from the hitch.
Driving instructions
Driving with a trailer always requires extra care
and consideration .
Weight distribution
Towing a loaded trailer with an empty car res ults
in a high ly unstable distribution of weight . If this
cannot be avo ided, drive at very low speeds on ly
to avoid the risk of losing steering control.
A "balanced" rig is easie r to operate and cont rol.
This means that the tow vehicle should be loaded
to the extent possible and permissible, while keeping the trai ler as light as possib le under the
circumstances . Whenever possible, transfer
some cargo to the luggage compartment of the
tow vehicle while observ ing tongue load requ ire­
ments and vehicle loading considerat ions .
Spe ed
The higher the speed, the more difficult it be­
comes for the driver to contro l the rig. Do not
drive at the maximum permiss ible speed. Reduce
your speed even more if load, weather or w ind

conditions are unfavorab le -particularly when
going downhi ll.
Reduce vehicle speed
immediate ly if the trailer
shows the slightest sign of sway ing.
Do not try
to st op the swaying by accele rating.
Observe speed limits. In some a reas, speeds fo r
vehicles towing tra ilers are lower tha n for regular
vehicles.
A lways apply brakes ear ly . When driving down­
hill, shift into a lower gea r to use the engine
braki ng effect to slow the vehicle. Use of the
brakes alone ca n cause them to overheat and fa il.
Coolant temperature
The coolant temperature gauge¢ page 8 must
be observed carefully. If the needle moves close
to the upper end of the scale, reduce speed im­
med iate ly and/or tu rn off the a ir cond itioner .
If the coolant temperatu re warning light . in
the instrument cluster starts flashing, p ull off
the road, stop and let the engine

Anyone not properly res trained in a moving
vehicle is at a much greater risk in an acci ­
dent . Never let anyone ride in your car who is
not properly wear ing the restraints provided
by Aud i.
Trailer towing
information
Important to know
-
Your vehicle handles differently when towing a
trailer because of the addit iona l weight and dif­
ferent weight distribution. Safety, performance
and economy will greatly depend on how careful­
ly you load your tra iler and operate your rig.
Before you actually tow your trailer, pract ice
turning, stopping and backing up in an area away
from traffic. Keep pract icing u nti l you have be­
come completely fam iliar w ith the way your vehi-
cle-tra ile r combination behaves and respo nds . .,.

Releasing and opening the engine hood
The engine hood is released from inside the vehi­
cle.

Before opening the engine hood, make sure that
the windshield wipers are flat against the wind­
shield. Otherwise, they could damage the paint
on the hood.

Hot engine coolant can burn you.
- To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam or
coolant escaping from the engine compart­
ment. Wait until no steam or coolant can be

seen or heard before carefully opening the
hood.
Closing the engine hood
.. Pull the hood down until the pressure from the
struts is reduced.

not try to push it shut;
it may fail to engage

A WARNING
A hood that is not completely latched could
fly up and block your view while driving.
- When you close the engine hood, check it to
make sure the safety catch has properly en­
gaged. The hood should be flush with the
surrounding vehicle body parts.
- If you notice while driving that the hood is
not secured properly, stop at once and close
it.
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in the
engine compartment.
-
Whenever you must perform any work in the
engine compartment, for example checking and
filling different fluids, there is a risk of injury, burns and accidents. To prevent personal injury
always observe the following WARNINGS. The
engine compartment of any vehicle is a hazard­
ous area

To help avoid injury, before you check any­
thing under the hood:
- Turn off the engine.
- Remove the ignition key .
- Apply the parking brake.
- Move selector lever of automatic transmis-
sion to "P" (Park).
-Always let the engine cool down. Hot com­
ponents will burn skin on contact.
- To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam or
coolant escaping from the engine

compartment. Wait until no steam or cool­
ant can be seen or heard before carefully
opening the hood.
- Keep children away from the engine com­
partment.
- Never spill fluids on hot engine compo­
nents. They can cause a fire.
- Never touch the radiator fan. The auxiliary
electric fan is temperature controlled and
can switch on suddenly.
- Never open the coolant reservoir cap when
the engine is still warm . The coolant system
is pressurized and hot coolant could spray
out.
- Protect your face, hands and arm from
steam or hot engine coolant by placing a
thick rag over the cap when you open the coolant reservoir .
- Do not remove the engine cover under any
circumstances . This increases the risk of
burns.
- If work on the fuel system or the electrical
system is necessary:
= Always disconnect the battery.
- Never smoke or work near heaters or open
flames. Fluids in the engine compartment
could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher imme­
diately available.
- To avoid electrical shock and personal injury
while the engine is running or being started,
never touch:
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage
electronic ignition system.
- If you must perform a check or repair with
the engine running:
- First, fully apply the parking brake, move
selector lever of automatic transmission
to "P" (Park).
- Always use extreme caution to prevent
clothing , jewelry, or long hair from get-

ting caught in the radiator fan, V-belts or
other moving parts, or from contacting
hot parts. Tie back hair before starting,
and do not wear clothing that will hang or
droop into the engine.
- Minimize exposure to emission and chemi­
cal hazards

- Engine exhaust, some of its constituents,
and certain vehicle components contain or
emit chemicals known to the State of Cali­
fornia to cause cancer and birth defects and
reproductive harm. In addition, certain flu­

to cause cancer and birth defects or other
reproductive harm .
- Battery posts, terminals and related acces­
sories contain lead and lead compounds,
chemicals known to the State of California
to cause cancer and reproductive harms.

When adding fluids, always make sure that
they are poured into the proper container or
filler opening, otherwise serious damage to
vehicle systems will occur.

To detect leaks in time, inspect the vehicle
floor pan from underneath regularly. If you
see spots from oil or other vehicle fluids, have
your vehicle inspected by an authorized Audi dealer .

Engine oil
Engine oil specifications
The engine oil used must conform to exact speci­
fications.
T he serv ice interval display in the instrument
cluster of your vehicle will inform you when it is
time for an oi l change . We recommend that you
have your oi l changed by an authorized Audi Serv­
ice Advisor.
If you have to top off the oil between oil changes,
use the Audi oil quality standard specified in the
tab~ .
