A WARNING
-Always observe the warning in ¢ page 193,
before opening t he hood and checking the
engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dr ipping from the engine compartment. You
cou ld burn yourself. Let the engine cool off
firstsothatyoucannothearo rseeany
steam or engine coo lant.
0 Note
- Mounting additional lights or accessories in
front of the air inlets reduces the cooling ef­
fect of the radiator. At h igh outside temper­
atu res or high engine load, the engine could
overheat.
- The front spoiler has been designed to prop­
erly distribute the cooling air when the vehi­
cle is moving. If the spoiler is damaged, this
could reduce the cooling effect and the en­
gine could then overheat. Ask your author­
ized Audi dealer for assistance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter )
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM (revo­
lutions per minutes).
If engine RPM drops below 1,500, you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area at
the end of the scale indicates maximum permis­
sible eng ine RPM after the break-in period. Be­
fore reaching this area, move the selector lever
to position D/5 or ease your foot off the accelera­
tor pedal.

should only briefly be in the red zone: you
could damage your eng ine! The beginning of
the red zone varies depending on the engine.

Upshifting early saves fuel and reduces en­
gine noise.

The !SET I button performs the following func­
tions:
Switching on time, date, temperature
display and odometer
The display appears for approximately 30 sec­
onds when you press the
ISETI button¢ fig . 4
with the ignition off.
Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system constantly monitors cer­
tain indiv idual functions and components of the
vehicle when the ignition is turned on and when
the vehicle is moving .
With the ignition turned on, you can start the
"Auto-Check sequence" by pressing the
! SET I but­
ton. You can perform an Auto-Check sequence
when the vehicle is stat ionary and the ignition is
turned on or when the vehicle is moving slower
than 3 mph (5 km/h).
In addition, the number of keys initialised for
your vehicle is displayed .
L2 3/3 means that
th ree keys have been initialised . This feature e na­
bles used car buye rs to make su re they have re­
ceived all of the keys.
If you are given only two keys , for instance , you
should take the veh icle and the existing keys to
an authorized Audi dealer to have the missing key
disabled. It is also important to notify your insur­
ance company about the loss.
Setting the speed warning
By pressing the ISETI button briefly, you can set
threshold 1 of the speed warning wh ile you are
driv ing

Indicator lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
b link or turn on. They indicate functions or mal­
functions ¢& .
Messages may appear with some indicator lights.
A warning signal will sound at the same time.
The messages disappear again after a short t ime.
To disp lay a message again, press the
ISETI but­
ton ¢
page 9. If several malfunctions occur, each
of the indicator/warning lamps will be displayed
in succession for about two seconds at a time.
Some ind icators lights in the display can turn on
in several colors.
A WARNING
-
-Failure to heed warning lights and other im­
portant vehicle informat ion may result in
serious personal injury or vehicle damage.
- Whenever stalled or stopped for repair,
move the vehicle a safe distance off the
road, stop the engine, and turn on th@
emergency flasher¢ page 50.
-The engine compartment of any motor vehi­
cle is a potentially hazardous area . Before
you check anything in the engine compart­ ment, stop the engine and let it cool down.
Always exercise extreme caution when work­ ing under the hood¢
page 193.
Overview
Some ind icator lights turn on briefly to check the
function of that system when you switch the ign i­
tion on . These systems are marked with a ,/ in
the following tables. If one of these indicator
lights does not turn on, there is a malfunction in
that system.

The red engine oil pressure warning symbol re­
quires immediate service or repair . Driving with a
low-oil-pr essure indication is likely to inflict se­
vere damage to the engine.
• Turn off engine! Oil pressure too low
If the indicator lig ht t urns on and the message
appears, the oi l pressu re is too low.

A malfunction in the engine cooling system must
be repaired as soon as possible .
• Turn off engine and check coolant level
If the indicator light turns on and the message

Contact your authorized A udi dealer or quali­
fied workshop if the sport differential is fau lty
or ma lfunctioning. The repa ir must be per­
formed by trained personnel us ing the correct
oil in order to ensure safety .

There is a malfunction in the electronic ignition
lock . Please go to an authorized Audi dea ler or
other qualified workshop to have the malfu nction
repaired .

- The fuel economy messages are not dis­
played in every instance, but rather in inter­
vals over a period of t ime .
Service interval display
The service interval display reminds you when
your next service is due .
The schedule for the next oil change or inspec­
tion is calculated automatically and displayed ac ­
cord ingly . The display works in two stages :
Service rem inder
30 days before the next service is due, a service
reminder appears in the d isp lay when you turn on
the ignition.
After about 5 seconds the display switches back
to normal. The distance and time remain ing are
updated each time the ignition is turned on until
the date due for service is reached.
Se rvi ce due
When the due date for service is reached, the
m essage
Ser vice due! appears in the instrument
cluster immediately after you turn on the igni ­
tion . Additionally, a warning tone sounds. After
about 5 seconds the d isplay sw itches back to nor ­
mal.

Resetting the service int erval display
Yo ur autho rized Aud i dea le r will reset the co rre­
sponding serv ice schedu le after performing the
appropriate service on your vehicle . You also have
the possibility to reset the oi l change schedule
after having performed an oil change accord ing

- Only reset the oil change display when you
have completed an o il change.
- If you disconnect the battery term inals, no
calcu lations can be made for the se rvice in­
terva l display dur ing th is time and no serv­
i c e rem inder will appear. Remembe r that
observ ing the proper serv ice i ntervals is vi­
t ally impo rtan t to ex tending the life o f your
vehicle, particular ly the engine, and ma in­
taining its va lue . Even if the mileage driven
is low, the maximum period o f one yea r
from one service to the next must not be ex­
ceeded.

The information in the Serv ice Reminder re­
mains stored even when the vehicle battery is
disconnected.
On Board Diagnostic
System (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ¢4 in the
instrument cluster is part of the On-Board Diag­
nostic (OBD II) system .
The warning/indicator light ill uminates when the
ignition is sw itched on and goes out after the en­
gine starts and the idle has stab ilized . This indi-
cates that the MIL is working properly . ..,.

Switching the ignition on/off
If yo u wou ld like to switch the ign ition on with­
ou t starting the eng ine, fo llow these steps:

When start ing the e ng ine, major elect rical loads
are switched off temporarily.
After a cold engine is started, there may be a b rief period of increased no ise beca use oil pres­
sure must first bui ld up in the hydraulic valve ad­
justers. This is no rmal a nd not a cause for con­
cern.

- Never allow t he eng ine to run in confine d
spa ces -danger of asphyxiation.
- Never t urn off the engine until the vehi cle
has come to a comp lete stop.

posed to very hig h or very low tempe ra-
t u r es.

- After starting a co ld eng ine, the re may be a
br ief per iod of increased noise because the
oil pressure must first build up in the hy­
dra ulic valve adjusters . Th is is norma l and
not a cause for concern .
- If you leave the ve hicle w ith the ignition
switched on, the ig nition w ill switch off af­
ter a ce rtain per iod of t ime . Please note that
elect rical equipment such as exte rior lights
w ill swi tch off as we ll when that happens.

-When the vehicle is locked, no one - part icu­
larly not children should remain in the vehi­
cle. Locked doors make it more diff icu lt for
emergency workers to get into the vehicle -
putt ing lives at risk.
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .
Stopping and applying parking brake
~ Pull the switch @9 page 76, fig. 91 to apply
the parking brake.
Starting and automatically releasing the
parking brake
~ When you start to drive as usual, the parking
brake is automatica lly released and your vehicle
begins to move.
When stopping at a traffic signal or stopping in
city traffic on vehicles w ith an automatic trans­
miss ion, the park ing brake can be applied. The
vehicle does not have to be held with the foot­ brake . The park ing brake eliminates the tendency
to creep with a drive range engaged. As soo n as
you dr ive off as usual, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically and the veh icle starts to
move.
Starting on slopes
When starting on inclines, the start ing assist pre ­
vents the vehicle from unintentionally rolling
back. The braking force of the parking brake is
not released until sufficient driving force has
been built up at the wheels.
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically only when the driver's
safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Driving
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an in­
cline, do the following:
~ Keep the switch @9 page 76, fig. 91 pulled
and depress the accelerator. The parking brake
stays applied and prevents the vehicle from
rolling backwa rd .
~ You ca n release the sw itch @once you a re sure
that you are develop ing enough dr iv in g force at
t he wheels by depressing the accelerator.
Depending on the weight of the rig (vehicle and
trailer) and the severity of the incline, you may
roll backwards as you start. You can prevent roll­
i ng backwards by holding the pa rking brake
swi tch @ pulled out and accelerating -just as
you wou ld when starting on a hill with a conven­
t iona l hand brake .
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional broke system
foils or locks.
~ I n an emergency, pull the switch@Q page 76,
fig. 91 and continue to pull it to slow your vehi ­
cle down with the parking brake.
~ As soon as you re lease the switch @or acceler-
ate, the braking process stops .
If you pull the switch @and hold it above a
speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergency
braking f unction is init iated. The vehicle is braked
at all four whee ls by activating the hydraulic
brake system . The brake performance is s imilar
to making an emergency stop

In order not to activate the emergency braking by
mistake, an audible warning tone (buzzer)
sounds when the switch @is pulled . As soon as
the switch @ is released, or the accelerator pedal
i s depressed, emergency braking stops .
A WARNING
Emergency braking should only be used in an
emergency, when the normal foot bra ke has
failed or the brake pedal is obstructed. Using
the parking brake to perform emergency
braking w ill slow your vehicle down as if you
